Evaluating and improving the usability of a mHealth platform to assess postoperative dental pain.

The use of interactive mobile health (mHealth) applications to monitor patient-reported postoperative pain outcomes is an emerging area in dentistry that requires further exploration. This study aimed to evaluate and improve the usability of an existing mHealth application. The usability of the application was assessed iteratively using a 3-phase approach, including a rapid cognitive walkthrough (Phase I), lab-based usability testing (Phase II), and in situ pilot testing (Phase III). The study team conducted Phase I, while providers and patients participated in Phase II and III. The rapid cognitive walkthrough identified 23 potential issues that could negatively impact user experience, with the majority classified as system issues. The lab-based usability testing yielded 141 usability issues.; 43% encountered by patients and 57% by dentists. Usability problems encountered during pilot testing included undelivered messages due to mobile phone carrier and service-related issues, errors in patients' phone number data entry, and problems in provider training. Through collaborative and iterative work with the vendor, usability issues were addressed before launching a trial to assess its efficacy. The usability of the mHealth application for postoperative dental pain was remarkably improved by the iterative analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration.

This study examines the mediation effect of customer Satisfaction on the relationship between service marketing mix, service orientation, service quality, and customer loyalty using a case study of clients of a mobile phone carrier in In Iraq Kurdistan Region.. In this study, the product categories of mobile phone services, which have a variety of items on the market, used. The mobile phone service provider's goods for mobile phone services with various characteristics were the research objects in this study. In 2020, the research sample included all Erbil-resident mobile phone users. The population in this study was unbounded because it was impossible to determine the exact number of clients. Two hundred people took part in the survey. In this study, the structural equation model (SEM) analysis method was used, and the Partial least Squares (PLS) approach was used to analyze and test the study model. The application of the service marketing mix, service orientation, and service quality by the company shows that not all factors can immediately affect customer loyalty; instead, they must first affect customer satisfaction. This means that in order to build customer loyalty, a company must first understand what its customers need by considering the service marketing mix, service orientation, and service quality. This accomplished by tracking customer satisfaction levels. To increase customer satisfaction and loyalty to mobile phone carrier services, particularly in Erbil, the service quality of the mobile phone sector must be improved. This paper is distinguished by the following features: (1) the Sobel test-based mediation effect of customer satisfaction on the impact of service quality, service orientation, and the service marketing mix on customer loyalty; and (2) the research site mobile phone Services in Erbil, Kurdistan, where no previous studies investigated this connection.

Inertial Odometry Using Hybrid Neural Network With Temporal Attention for Pedestrian Localization

In this work, a novel hybrid neural network with temporal attention (HNNTA) is proposed for inertial pedestrian localization. The HNNTA model employs the convolutional neural network (CNN) for extracting sectional features from the IMU data, followed by the long short-term memory (LSTM) network to capture the global temporal information. A temporal attention mechanism is designed to weigh the hidden states produced by the LSTM network and generate the final features for velocity prediction. Specifically, the proposed temporal attention mechanism is composed of the CNN feature refinement module and the <i>sigmoid</i> score normalization function. We utilize different 1D filters to refine the temporal hidden states from previous refined time indexes, and form the value matrix with each row containing different features along with the entire window time indexes and each column representing individual features from the same time spans. We then employ <i>sigmoid</i> function to normalize the dot-product alignment between features from different time spans and that of the last refined time index. We employ RoNIN dataset to evaluate HNNTA model, which contains the largest and most natural IMU measurements. We employ extensive erosion experiments to show the effectiveness of the HNNTA model design. Compared with the state-of-the-art method, the HNNTA model provides 10.39% higher 50th percentile accuracy for all phone carriers that have seen in the training set and 8.69% higher for those that have not been seen. The real-world experiments with IMU measurements collected in the CUHK campus further demonstrate the better generalisation capability of the HNNTA model.

Population Mobility and the Transmission Risk of the COVID-19 in Wuhan, China

At the beginning of 2020, a suddenly appearing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) rapidly spread around the world. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in China occurred during the Spring Festival when a large number of migrants traveled between cities, which greatly increased the infection risk of COVID-19 across the country. Financially supported by the Wuhan government, and based on cellphone signaling data from Unicom (a mobile phone carrier) and Baidu location-based data, this paper analyzed the effects that city dwellers, non-commuters, commuters, and people seeking medical services had on the transmission risk of COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic in Wuhan. The paper also evaluated the effects of the city lockdown policy on the spread of the pandemic outside and inside Wuhan. The results show that although the daily business activities in the South China Seafood Wholesale Market and nearby commuters’ travel behaviors concentrated in the Hankou area, a certain proportion of these people were distributed in the Wuchang and Hanyang areas. The areas with relatively high infection risks of COVID-19 were scattered across Wuhan during the early outbreak of the pandemic. The lockdown in Wuhan closed the passageways of external transport at the very beginning, largely decreasing migrant population and effectively preventing the spread of the pandemic to the outside. However, the Wuhan lockdown had little effect on preventing the spread of the pandemic within Wuhan at that time. During this period, a large amount of patients who went to hospitals for medical services were exposed to a high risk of cross-infection without precaution awareness. The pandemic kept dispersing in three towns until the improvement of the capacity of medical treatment, the management of closed communities, the national support to Wuhan, and the implementation of a series of emergency responses at the same time. The findings in this paper reveal the spatiotemporal features of the dispersal of infection risk of COVID-19 and the effects of the prevention and control measures during the early days of the pandemic. The findings were adopted by the Wuhan government to make corresponding policies and could also provide supports to the control of the pandemic in the other regions and countries.

Advocacy organizations around the country, including Mental Health America (MHA), are calling on Congress to complete the work already started by voting to turn the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act into law. The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act establishes 988 as the easy‐to‐access three‐digit dialing code for suicide prevention and creates funding support through states and wireless phone carriers, similar to what the country has for 911. In July, the Federal Communications Commission made the historic announcement that it had unanimously voted to prevent suicides by designating 988 as the universal three‐digit dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. MHA on Sept. 15 sent out notices urging consumers to push Congress to make history on this designated number and make mental health services more accessible to save lives.

Energy Cost Reduction for Telecommunication Towers Using Hybrid Energy Storage

For many mobile phone carriers, the cost to cable electricity to an off-grid tower is simply too expensive. The combination of vast and difficult-to-service areas with the lack of a grid or a reliable power alternative has made the rollout of rural networks essentially unaffordable. Existing works on a good grid and off-grid are not enough to cover the whole spectrum of telecom towers in many countries and continents. The objective of this study is to develop a hybrid energy storage system under energy efficiency initiatives for telecom towers in the poor grid and bad grid scenario to further reduce the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) besides reducing carbon emissions. The present study confirms that by using the micro-grid concept which is a combination of multiple hybrid energy storage can reduce CAPEX and OPEX cost between 9% to 14% as compared to the pure valve-regulated lead-acid battery or VRLA battery.

Public knowledge and attitudes towards bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in Ghana, West Africa

Background and objectivesEarly bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the most important predictors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) survival. There is a dearth of literature on CPR engagement in countries such as Ghana, where cardiovascular events are increasingly prevalent. In this study, we sought to evaluate Ghanaians’ knowledge of and attitudes towards bystander CPR, in the context of the country’s nascent emergency medicine network.MethodsCapitalizing on the growing ubiquity and use of social media across the country, we used a novel social media sampling strategy for this study. We created, pre-tested, and distributed an online survey, using the two most utilized social media platforms in Ghana: WhatsApp and Facebook. An airtime data incentive of 5 US dollars, worth between 5 and 10 GB of cellular data based on mobile phone carrier, was provided as incentive. Inclusion criteria were (1) ≥ 18 years of age, (2) living in Ghana. Survey participants were encouraged to distribute the survey within their own networks to expand its reach. We stratified participants’ responses by healthcare affiliation, and further grouped healthcare workers into ambulance and non-ambulance personnel. We used chi-square (χ2)/Fisher’s Exact tests to compare differences in responses between the groups. Based on the question “have you ever heard of CPR?”, an alpha of 0.05 and a 95% confidence interval, we expected to have 80% power to detect a 15% difference in responses between lay and healthcare providers with an estimated sample size of 246 study participants.ResultsThe survey was launched on 8 July 2019 and closed approximately 51 h post-launch. With a 64% completion rate and 479 unique survey completions, the study was overpowered at 96% power, to detect differences in responses between the groups. There was geographic representation across all 10 historic regions of Ghana. Over half (57.8%, n = 277) of the respondents were non-medically affiliated, and 71.9% were women. Healthcare workers were more aware of CPR than lay respondents (96.5% vs 68.1%; p < 0.001). Eighty-five percent of respondents were aware that CPR involves chest compressions, and almost 70% indicated that “mouth to mouth” is a necessary component of CPR. Fewer than 10% were unwilling to administer CPR. Lack of skills (44.9%) and fear of causing harm (25.5%) were barriers noted by respondents for not administering CPR. Notably, a quarter of ambulance workers reported never having received CPR training. If they were to witness a collapse, 62.0% would call an ambulance, and 32.6% would hail a taxi.ConclusionThe majority of participants are willing to perform CPR. Contextualized training that emphasizes hands-only CPR and builds participants’ confidence may increase bystander willingness and engagement.

A Scheme to Design Community Detection Algorithms in Various Networks

Network structures, consisting of nodes and edges, have applications in almost all subjects. A set of nodes is called a community if the nodes have strong interrelations. Industries (including cell phone carriers and online social media companies) need community structures to allocate network resources and provide proper and accurate services. However, most detection algorithms are derived independently, which is arduous and even unnecessary. Although recent research shows that a general detection method that serves all purposes does not exist, we believe that there is some general procedure of deriving detection algorithms. In this paper, we represent such a general scheme. We mainly focus on two types of networks: transmission networks and similarity networks. We reduce them to a unified graph model, based on which we propose a method to define and detect community structures. Finally, we also give a demonstration to show how our design scheme works.

Prevalence of the Use of Mobile Instant Messaging Applications: The Need to Assess Their Usage in Human Factors Investigations

Smartphones have become an essential part of our everyday life. Use of mobile instant messaging applications (e.g., WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage, Kik, Viber, GroupMe, Telegram, Send, Line, and Snapchat) rather than messaging services from cellular service providers have become very popular among users, far outpacing the use of more traditional text messaging. Initial research revealed that the global usage of these modes of communication far outnumber standard text messaging. These instant messaging apps allow users to perform the same function as traditional communication tools (text, voice call, audio message, video call from phone carrier’s number). Additionally, they offer other capabilities such as creating group chats, and sharing photos/videos – in many cases without the need of using data plan coverage from phone carriers. Although instant messaging applications have become very popular, their use for communication may not be considered as often as traditional voice and text message phone records when assessing accident causation due to potential driver distraction from phone usage. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the prevalence of instant messaging applications, the need to consider the usage of instant messaging applications when assessing potential driver and pedestrian distractions due to smartphone usage, and some initial tools for gathering data on usage of some of the applications.

Optimal Three-Part Tariff Plans

Service providers, such as cell phone carriers, often offer three-part tariff plans that consist of three levers: A fixed fee, an allowance of free units, and a price per unit above the allowance. In previous studies the optimal three-part tariff contract was characterized using the standard first-order conditions approach. Because this optimization problem is nonsmooth, however, it could only be solved in a few simple cases. In this study we employ a different methodology that is based on obtaining a global bound for the firm profit, and then showing that this bound is attained by the optimal plan. This approach allows us to explicitly calculate the optimal three-part tariff plan under quite general conditions, where consumers are rational, they have a general utility function, they experience psychological costs when they exceed the number of free units, they have deterministic or stochastic consumption rates, they are homogeneous or heterogeneous, and the firm costs are fixed or depend on the usage level. Predicting time-to-churn of prepaid mobile telephone customers using social network analysis

Mobile phone carriers in a saturated market must focus on customer retention to maintain profitability. This study investigates the incorporation of social network information into churn prediction models to improve accuracy, timeliness, and profitability. Traditional models are built using customer attributes, however these data are often incomplete for prepaid customers. Alternatively, call record graphs that are current and complete for all customers can be analysed. A procedure was developed to build the call graph and extract relevant features from it to be used in classification models. The scalability and applicability of this technique are demonstrated on a telecommunications data set containing 1.4 million customers and over 30 million calls each month. The models are evaluated based on ROC plots, lift curves, and expected profitability. The results show how using network features can improve performance over local features while retaining high interpretability and usability.

Mobile Health for All: Public-Private Partnerships Can Create a New Mental Health Landscape.

Research has already demonstrated that different mHealth approaches are feasible, acceptable, and clinically promising for people with mental health problems. With a robust evidence base just over the horizon, now is the time for policy makers, researchers, and the private sector to partner in preparation for the near future. The Lifeline Assistance Program is a useful model to draw from. Created in 1985 by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Lifeline is a nationwide program designed to help eligible low-income individuals obtain home phone and landline services so they can pursue employment, reach help in case of emergency, and access social services and healthcare. In 2005, recognizing the broad shift towards mobile technology and mobile-cellular infrastructure, the FCC expanded the program to include mobile phones and data plans. The FCC provides a base level of federal support, but individual states are responsible for regional implementation, including engagement of commercial mobile phone carriers. Given the high rates of disability and poverty among people with severe mental illness, many are eligible to benefit from Lifeline and research has shown that a large proportion does in fact use this program to obtain a mobile phone and data plan. In the singular area of mobile phone use, the gap between people with severe mental illness and the general population in the U.S. is vanishing. Strategic multi-partner programs will be able to grant access to mHealth for mental health programs to those who will not be able to afford them—arguably, the people who need them the most. Mobile technology manufacturing costs are dropping. Soon all mobile phones in the marketplace, including the more inexpensive devices that are made available through subsidy programs, will have “smart” capabilities (ie, internet connectivity and the capacity to host apps). Programs like Lifeline could be expanded to include mHealth resources that capitalize on “smart” functions, such as secure/encrypted clinical texting programs and mental health monitoring and illness-management apps. Mobile phone hardware and software development companies could be engaged to add mHealth programs as a standard component in the suite of tools that come installed on their mobile phones; thus, in addition to navigation apps, media players, and games, the new Android or iPhone could come with guided relaxation videos, medication reminder systems, and evidence-based self-monitoring and self-management tools. Telecommunication companies could be encouraged to offer mHealth options with their data plans. Operating system updates pushed out by the mobile carrier companies could come with optional mHealth applications for those who elect to download them. In the same manner in which the Lifeline Assistance Program has helped increase access to fundamental opportunities to so many low-income individuals, innovative multi-partner programs have the potential to put mHealth for mental health resources in the hands of millions in the years ahead.
