Facilitator or hindrance? The impact of AI on university students' higher-order thinking skills in complex problem solving

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly permeating education, enhancing teaching efficiency and enriching personalized learning experiences. However, integrating AI without compromising students' independent thinking remains a challenge. Using ChatGPT-4o as an example, this study employed a within-subject experimental design to examine AI’s impact on university students' higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and task outcomes in complex problem-solving. Based on the design problem context, the research constructed diverse task modules encompassing complex problem-solving processes, collected multidimensional data from 40 students, and analyzed using epistemic network analysis and consensus assessment techniques. The results indicate that AI slightly enhances the originality and usefulness of design sketches and significantly increases the number of HOTS used and the diversity of their interconnections. The study further categorizes students by their degree of AI influence, revealing that those more influenced by AI incorporate more personal thinking, use more HOTS, and exhibit richer interconnections among these skills. This research provides empirical evidence on AI's role in fostering HOTS and provides guidance on the integration of AI to enhance students' independent thinking in education.

Treatment non-compliance with antipsychotics in Pakistan

Psychosis refers to symptoms affecting the mind due to loss of contact with reality. It can disrupt a person's thoughts and they might experience hallucinations or delusions. This altered sense of reality can significantly affect everyday activities and the ability to maintain relationships. Psychosis is not a diagnosis, rather a symptom of various mental health conditions. About one in every 150 individuals is affected by psychotic disorders at least once in their lifetime.1 Antipsychotics are used to control psychotic symptoms and the duration of the therapy depends on the severity of illness. For short-term psychoses such as delirium, medications are continued for two additional weeks after symptoms resolve and then tapered off gradually. With chronic schizophrenia, antipsychotics are usually taken permanently to avoid recurrence.2 However, in countries such as Pakistan, where with low literacy and social stigma associated with mental illnesses, many patients discontinue their antipsychotic therapy due to various factors.3 Many of these reasons have been discussed by Rao et al4, including patient-related, and healthcare system-related factors. Denial, lack of awareness, financial constraints, adverse effects of the medicines, and complex regimens, all contribute to patients' non-adherence. Insufficient training of doctors, poor patient management, and long waiting times for appointments can contribute to a poor doctor-patient relationship, which leading to negative patient outcomes. One important factor is the side effect profile of antipsychotics. They can cause extrapyramidal effects like akathisia, parkinsonism, dystonia, and tardive dyskinesia. Weight gain, sedation, blurring of vision, postural hypotension, prolactin elevation, and constipation are also common.5 Such effects make it difficult to continue therapy without seriously affecting the lifestyle of patients. Discontinuation prevents patients from fully benefiting from the medication, leading to persistent or recurrent psychosis. Hence it is of utmost importance for the Pakistani healthcare system to come up with a method that ensures continuation of therapy among our population. Healthcare providers should patients to join relevant support groups to help them cope with the emotional aspects of their illness. Although developing medications with fewer side effects is challenging, it could help address one of the most common reasons for non-adherence. Further research is needed to address the factors contributing to non-adherence.

Dunhuang Calligraphy and Poetry Works on the Study of Chinese History and Dunhuang's Promotion of Calligraphy Works

Chinese calligraphy and poetry are important components of Chinese traditional culture, with profound historical significance and cultural symbols. In the vicissitudes of history, they have experienced wars and various factors have led to them not being given important attention. But their place in the Chinese cultural system cannot be ignored. In particular, the relationship between poetry and Chinese calligraphy was important in the Central Plains Dynasty's control of Dunhuang. By analyzing the unearthed relics of Dunhuang calligraphy works and the original poems unearthed in Dunhuang, this study explores how Chinese calligraphy and poetry reflect the changes of ancient history and their impact on society. Research shows that these art forms are not only the expression of personal feelings and thoughts, but also important materials for historical research. It can confirm the appearance of politics and society at that time from the side, and provide valuable materials for modern scholars to study history, so that we can better understand the evolution of Chinese history and cultural integration.

Destination or Journey? What Constitutes Successful Advance Care Planning?

This article seeks to identify what constitutes successful advance care planning. It begins by examining the variety of often-interrelated reasons given for the promotion of advance care planning, which include ethical considerations, as well as instrumental and pragmatic elements. Thus, advance care planning can variously be promoted as an opportunity for the expression of personal autonomy; as the chance to document future wishes; as a method to avoid unwanted medical interventions; and as a way to reduce a family's distress at the end of a loved one's life. The article then explores key ethical, human rights and legal questions that are engaged by these various aims, when weight is sought to be given to a person's thinking about future events. The article concludes by identifying the core criteria for successful advance care planning.

The Role of Self-Disclosure and Family Functioning in Shaping Vocational Students Career Decisions

Vocational high school students often have difficulty in making career decisions, which can make them confused and lose opportunities in the future. One factor is the lack of information about careers, which can actually be obtained through communication with others, including by expressing personal thoughts and desires. This study aims to see the relationship between self-disclosure and family function with students' career decision-making. The method used was quantitative involving 140 students, and the data were analyzed through multiple linear regression. The results showed that self-disclosure and family function were simultaneously negatively related to career decision doubt—that is, the higher the self-disclosure and the better the family function, the lower the doubt. Self-disclosure helps students find solutions or get emotional support from others, especially in managing their feelings. However, when analyzed separately, self-disclosure alone did not show a significant relationship with career decisions, while family function showed a significant relationship. This suggests that family support plays a more important role in reducing uncertainty in students' career choices than self-disclosure alone.

Representation of Local Wisdom in the Language Structure of Street and Place Names in Bali Province

Naming a place or street is related to many aspects, including aspects of culture, thought, history, and education. Naming in anthropolinguistic studies is known as toponymy (naming). Toponymy is interesting to study in linguistic studies because the existence of toponymy related to places and streets can provide a historical story to the naming given. The reason is, that the name given comes from a culture and will produce stories and past history so that it can create layers of meaning. In the Sapir-Worf hypothesis, the use of language in toponymy can influence the way a person thinks and behaves. One of them is the use of language structure so that it can describe the perspective and thinking of the local community culture. The formulation of the problem in the study includes 1) how is the language structure of street toponymy in Bali Province and 2) how is the language structure of place toponymy in Bali Province. For this reason, this study aims to describe the language structure of streets and places in Bali Province. The benefits of this study can certainly explore the values of local wisdom reflected in the naming of streets and places in Bali Province and their relevance in the context of culture and education. The approaches used are linguistic anthropology, morphology, and semantics. The naming of areas in Bali Province certainly pays close attention to the values of local wisdom, which include natural phenomena, social interactions, places of interaction, and cultural heritage in the form of oral traditions. This study has the potential to contribute to the context of learning by integrating learning materials and can be the basis for the development of teaching materials in Bali Province.

Archiving Uncertainty: Leveraging Crowdsourcing Methodology in Documenting Personal Experiences of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic, declared a global crisis by the World Health Organization on 11 March 2020, dramatically altered society’s daily routines, social interactions, and digital media consumption. This paper aims to evaluate how leveraging crowdsourcing techniques in combination with digital archiving strategies can effectively capture real-time autobiographical reflections during a period of crisis. The study focuses on the formation of the Latvian Pandemic Diary Collection, initiated through an open-call crowdsourcing initiative that was launched on 17 March 2020 to collect people’s recordings of their personal thoughts and emotional responses in this period of profound change and uncertainty. Methodologically, the project employed a versatile rapid-response crowdsourcing framework and dynamic digital archiving strategy, coupled with an intense outreach and social media campaign to encourage diary submissions. The diary project has resulted in an open-access digital collection of 2,333 daily entries by 238 participants, offering unique insights into the societal shift towards digital modes of professional, social, and educational interaction in response to the pandemic’s constraints. Although the methodology applied proved effective in eliciting relatively widespread public engagement, difficulties became apparent in relation to the scalability of the approach and getting different segments of society to participate in the project through the crowdsourced-driven digital collection of autobiographical narratives in a rapidly changing social context.

Fenomena Chatbot AI Sebagai Teman Curhat: Implikasi Pada Hubungan Antarpribadi di Era Digital

The phenomenon of using AI chatbots as confidants has been on the rise alongside advancements in communication technology. This research examines the increasing popularity of AI chatbots as companions for sharing personal thoughts in the digital era. By referencing the Beyond Human Communication theory, that highlights the connection between people and technology in modern communication, we used a qualitative approach and a systematic literature review to explore how chatting with these bots affects personal relationships and how we perceive communication quality. Results reveal that AI chatbots, by Natural Language Processing (NLP) abilities, can create a communication experience that feels quite like talking with another person. Chatbot AI offer emotional support that readily available. However, relying too much on chatbots can hinder a person’s ability to engage in deeper, more meaningful conversations with other humans. While these bots can provide quick and accurate responses, they lack the depth and significance that come with human interactions. This research highlights the need to strike a balance between using technology and maintaining genuine human connections to keep our social relationships strong.

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF SCHIZOPHRENIA WITH OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER: A CASE REPORT

Schizophrenia is one of the most severe mental health conditions affecting mankind that affects how a person thinks, feels and behaves. It is associated with considerable disability and may affect all areas of life, including personal, familial, social, educational, and occupational functioning. According to WHO, Schizophrenia affects approximately 24 million people or 1 in 300 people (0.32%) worldwide. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessions, compulsions, or both that cause significant distress to afflicted individuals. The prevalence of OCD in individuals meeting the criteria for Schizophrenia is 25%. In Ayurveda, both conditions can be managed using Unmada's principles. A 39-year-old male patient presented with complaints of increased fear due to hearing unknown voices, seeing different faces, the sensation of a foetid smell, a salty taste in the mouth, a burning sensation over the body, feeling of touching, pricking sensation, sensation of his body transforming to other persons, repeated washing of hands since 21 years. Due to the predominance of Vata Kapha (morbid humors) symptoms, the condition was diagnosed as Vata Kapha Unmada (Insanity) with Pittanubandha and appropriate sodhana (purification therapy) and samana (pacifying therapy) treatment was done. Thirty days management protocols, including sirolepa (herbal head paste application), snehapana (internal oleation therapy), virechana (purgation therapy), vasti (enema therapy), nasya (nasal administration therapy) and sirodhara (forehead oil dripping therapy) were administered. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) were used to assess before and after treatment. After the intervention, scores were significantly reduced from 112 to 72 in PANSS and 22 to 11 in Y-BOCS. The case illustrates the importance of Ayurvedic management to relieve the symptoms and to improve the quality of life in Schizophrenia with OCD.

Assessing the impact of social network on the formation and evolution of collective opinion in integrated intelligent argumentation with social network

Massive online argumentation platforms can potentially capture the decision rationale and collective intelligence. Although significant advances have been made in their models, algorithms, and applications, the role of social networking in shaping the formation and evolution of opinions in cyber-argumentation remains under-explored. Social networking aspects like friends and follows relationships among users in cyber argumentation can reveal the patterns, shifts, and true relationships between the users in a discourse that influence the collective decision-making process. However, there are currently no systematic methods for assessing the impacts of social networks on the formation and evolution of collective opinions in cyber-argumentation. In this research, we propose a novel method to quantify the impact of social networking on cyber-argumentation. We investigate three types of impacts: directional impact, mutual impact, and social group impact. These different measures help quantify what the social group of a person thinks about his or her opinions and their impacts on their arguments. Using these impact measures, we developed an algorithm to detect the pseudo-supporters of an individual in an argumentation network. Furthermore, we also study the impact of the social network of users on significant shifts in collective opinion using the social group impact and the strength of the social connection of users in argumentation. The proposed methods and algorithm have been implemented within our intelligent cyber-argumentation system with social networking. Our empirical evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of these quantification methods, detection of pseudo-supporters, and assessing the impact of social networks on collective opinion shifts in cyber-argumentation.

Office, Dignity, Authority, Conscience of the Judge of the Republic of Poland

The author analyzes and considers the office of a judge of the Republic of Poland, his dignity, authority and conscience in the context of judicial independence from the point of view of the rule of law, separation of the tripartite power in a democratic state of law. The independence of the judiciary, the independence of the judiciary are unquestionable values as the basis of the rule of law. The office, dignity, authority and conscience of the judge of the Republic of Poland are creative norms, which are based on the system of law and ethics. Attention has been paid to the systemic guarantees of the independence of the judiciary provided by the Constitution and laws regulating the court system. The surprisingly large scope of the sovereign powers of the representative of the executive power – the Minister of Justice over the common courts was pointed out. The importance of personal dignity, personal dignity of the judge and the dignity of tenure was emphasized. Undoubtedly, they are revealed in private, social and professional life and with the system of regulation and integration of activities (human behavior) as personality and legal thinking. It was pointed out that conscience, which is invoked by the judge in the oath of office, is the natural ability of reason to morally value actions and phenomena. Conscience as an intrinsic attribute of the human being currently or potentially belongs to every human being, as it is the first norm of conduct with a special ability to regulate human behavior and shape interpersonal coexistence. The connection between the practice of law (judging) and sensitivity is a moral issue and an important ethical quality to which special attention should be paid today. A judge should be perceived as a human being, as a person, as an entity, as a bearer of values, professionally prepared to realize them in social life, while fulfilling a servant role to man and society.
