Photoinduced spin-orbital coupling effect at donor: acceptor interface in non-fullerene organic solar cells

Non-fullerene based organic solar cells show excellent optoelectronic properties. In this study, firstly, we measured the magneto-photocurrent (MPC) effect to monitor the spin orbit coupling (SOC) action of electron-hole pairs at the donor: acceptor (D:A) interfaces, introduced by the dipole-dipole interaction in non-fullerene ITIC molecules. The MPC of non-fullerene based bulk heterojunctions show a broader line-shape, which implies a stronger SOC in electron-hole pairs at D:A interface as compared to the fullerene based bulk heterojunctions under photo-excitation. Secondly, the light-induced electron paramagnetic resonance (LEPR) results further give a direct evidence for stronger SOC in electron-hole pairs at D:A interface in non-fullerene bulk-heterojunction. Theoretically, increasing SOC provides a pathway for singlet electron-hole pairs to convert into triplet electron-hole pairs, leading to more spin states ready for dissociation. Therefore, the increased SOC will increase the magneto-photocurrent, and improve the performance of non-fullerene solar cells, we consider that photoexcitation can present a new approach to strengthen the SOC effect in organic solar cells toward better photovoltaic actions. Non-fullerene based organic solar cells show excellent optoelectronic properties and device performance. We think these excellent properties come from a stronger spin orbit coupling effect in electron-hole pairs at D: A interface under photoexcitation as compared to the fullerene bulk-heterojunctions, leading to increase the magneto-photocurrent. In addition, the capacitance-frequency is also reveal that the stronger SOC for non-fullerene bulk-heterojunctions originates from the larger electron cloud deformation electron-hole pairs caused by photoinduced dipole-dipole interactions. Therefore, we think the photoexcitation present a new approach to strengthen the SOC effect in organic solar cells toward better photovoltaic actions. • Non-fullerene based solar cell of ITO/ZnO/Active layer/MoO 3 /Ag shows a higher PCE of 11.30%. • A strong SOC exists in electron-hole pairs at D:A interface in the non-fullerene under lighting. • The strong SOC comes from the larger electron cloud deformation. • Photo-excitation can present a new approach to strengthen the SOC effect in organic solar cells.

Molecular design of either polymer donors or acceptors is a promising strategy to tune the morphology of the active layer of organic solar cells, enabling a high-performance device. Thereinto, developing novel polymer donors is an alternative method to obtain high photovoltaic performance. Herein, we present a facile side-chain engineering on the dithiophenobenzotriazole (DTBTz) unit of newly-designed polymer donors (named pBDT-DTBTz-EH and pBDT-DTBTz-Me) to boost the performance of non-fullerene solar cells. Compared with pBDT-DTBTz-EH with long N-alkyl side chains, pBDT-DTBTz-Me with a short methyl exhibits stronger molecular aggregation, higher absorption coefficient, and preferred face-on orientation packing. As a consequence, pBDT-DTBTz-Me based devices achieve an optimal power conversion efficiency of 15.31% when donors are paired with the narrow bandgap acceptor Y6, which is superior to that of pBDT-DTBTz-EH based devices (9.17%). Additionally, the pBDT-DTBTz-Me based devices manifest more effective charge separation and transfer than pBDT-DTBTz-EH based devices. These results indicate that fine-tuning side chains of polymer donors provide new insights for the design of high-performance polymer donors in non-fullerene solar cells.

Nanographene–Osmapentalyne Complexes as a Cathode Interlayer in Organic Solar Cells Enhance Efficiency over 18%

Interface engineering is a critical method by which to efficiently enhance the photovoltaic performance of nonfullerene solar cells (NFSC). Herein, a series of metal-nanographene-containing large transition metal involving dπ -pπ conjugated systems by way of the addition reactions of osmapentalynes and p-diethynyl-hexabenzocoronenes is reported. Conjugated extensions are engineered to optimize the π-conjugation of these metal-nanographene molecules, which serve as alcohol-soluble cathode interlayer (CIL) materials. Upon extension of the π-conjugation, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6:BTP-eC9-based NFSCs increases from 16% to over 18%, giving the highest recorded PCE. It is deduced by X-ray crystallographic analysis, interfacial contact methods, morphology characterization, and carrier dynamics that modification of hexabenzocoronenes-styryl can effectively improve the short-circuit current density (Jsc ) and fill factor of organic solar cells (OSCs), mainly due to the strong and ordered charge transfer, more matching energy level alignments, better interfacial contacts between the active layer and the electrodes, and regulated morphology. Consequently, the carrier transport is largely facilitated, and the carrier recombination is simultaneously impeded. These new CIL materials are broadly able to enhance the photovoltaic properties of OSCs in other systems, which provides a promising potential to serve as CILs for higher-quality OSCs.

Alkyl Chain Length Effects of Polymer Donors on the Morphology and Device Performance of Polymer Solar Cells with Different Acceptors

AbstractThe development of nonfullerene acceptors has brought polymer solar cells into a new era. Maximizing the performance of nonfullerene solar cells needs appropriate polymer donors that match with the acceptors in both electrical and morphological properties. So far, the design rationales for polymer donors are mainly borrowed from fullerene‐based solar cells, which are not necessarily applicable to nonfullerene solar cells. In this work, the influence of side chain length of polymer donors based on a set of random terpolymers PTAZ‐TPD10‐Cn on the device performance of polymer solar cells is investigated with three different acceptor materials, i.e., a fullerene acceptor [70]PCBM, a polymer acceptor N2200, and a fused‐ring molecular acceptor ITIC. Shortening the side chains of polymer donors improves the device performance of [70]PCBM‐based devices, but deteriorates the N2200‐ and ITIC‐based devices. Morphology studies unveil that the miscibility between donor and acceptor in blend films depends on the side chain length of polymer donors. Upon shortening the side chains of the polymer donors, the miscibility between the donor and acceptor increases for the [70]PCBM‐based blends, but decreases for the N2200‐ and ITIC‐based blends. These findings provide new guidelines for the development of polymer donors to match with emerging nonfullerene acceptors.

Revealing the Impact of F4‐TCNQ as Additive on Morphology and Performance of High‐Efficiency Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells

AbstractFluorinated molecule 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro‐7,7,8,8‐tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4‐TCNQ) and its derivatives have been used in polymer:fullerene solar cells primarily as a dopant to optimize the electrical properties and device performance. However, the underlying mechanism and generality of how F4‐TCNQ affects device operation and possibly the morphology is poorly understood, particularly for emerging nonfullerene organic solar cells. In this work, the influence of F4‐TCNQ on the blend film morphology and photovoltaic performance of nonfullerene solar cells processed by a single halogen‐free solvent is systematically investigated using a set of morphological and electrical characterizations. In solar cells with a high‐performance polymer:small molecule blend FTAZ:IT‐M, F4‐TCNQ has a negligibly small effect on the molecular packing and surface characteristics, while it clearly affects the electronic properties and mean‐square composition variation of the bulk. In comparison to the control devices with an average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.8%, inclusion of a trace amount of F4‐TCNQ in the active layer has improved device fill factor and current density, which has resulted into a PCE of 12.4%. Further increase in F4‐TCNQ content degrades device performance. This investigation aims at delineating the precise role of F4‐TCNQ in nonfullerene bulk heterojunction films, and thereby establishing a facile approach to fabricate highly optimized nonfullerene solar cells.

Tuning the performance of the non-fullerene organic solar cells by the polarizability.

We report here the synthesis and characterizations of a novel series of acceptor copolymers with a broad absorption band. The acceptor polymers were synthesized as a copolymer of perylenediimide (PDI) and naphthalene imide (NDI) along with dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]silole (DTS) and N-alkyl dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3-d]pyrroles (DTP). When the dipole moment and polarizability of the acceptor polymer are compared, it is observed that when the dipole moment decreases, the polarizability becomes larger. The polarizability of polymers containing PDI is significantly greater than those containing NDI, and their polarizability change is in accordance with the change in the transient fluorescence lifetime. It was also found that the power conversion efficiency of the non-fullerene solar cell was strongly correlated to polarizability. The results demonstrate that the polarizability can be utilized to screen novel donor and acceptor polymers for the design and synthesis of high-performance solar cells.

Enhancing the performance of non-fullerene solar cells with polymer acceptors containing large-sized aromatic units

In this work, we develop four diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymer acceptors for application in polymer-polymer solar cells. The polymer acceptors contain different-sized aromatic units, from small thiophene to benzodithiophene and large alkylthio-benzodithiophene units. Although the polymer acceptor with large-sized groups shows small LUMO offset and low energy loss when blended with the donor polymer PTB7-Th, the corresponding solar cells can achieve a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.1% due to high photocurrent. In contrast, the polymer acceptor with small thiophene units only provides a low PCE of 0.14% in solar cells. These results indicate that polymer acceptors with large-sized aromatic units can be potentially used into high performance non-fullerene solar cells.

Effect of Alkyl Side Chains of Conjugated Polymer Donors on the Device Performance of Non-Fullerene Solar Cells

The influence of the chemical structure of conjugated polymers on the nanophase separation and device performance in fullerene-based solar cells has been widely studied, while this is less investigated in non-fullerene solar cells. In this work, we design three conjugated polymers with different length of side chains, and we find that the length of side chains has little influence on the quantum efficiencies of non-fullerene solar cells. As a comparison, the length of side chains has a significant effect on the quantum efficiencies of fullerene-based solar cells. This indicates that morphology of the blended thin films in non-fullerene solar cells is rather independent of the length of the donor side chains, and the mechanism for morphology evolution in the non-fullerene system is completely different from that in the fullerene system. A High Efficiency Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cell with Optimized Crystalline Organizations.

A well-organized donor-acceptor crystalline structure is examined for high -performance nonfullerene solar cells. By thermal annealing, nanoscale structures of both donor and acceptor domains are successfully modulated, followed by -significant changes in the resulting -photovoltaic characteristics. When annealed at 90 °C, a maximum power conversion efficiency of 7.64% with a -remarkable open-circuit voltage of 1.03 V is obtained.
