Atmospheric turbulence recognition with deep learning models for sinusoidal hyperbolic hollow Gaussian beams-based free-space optical communication links

The integration of artificial intelligence technology to improve the performance of free-space optical communication (FSO) systems has received increasing interest. This study aims to propose a novel approach based on deep learning techniques for detecting turbulence-induced distortion levels in FSO communication links. The deep learning-based models improved and fine-tuned in this work are trained using a dataset containing the intensity profiles of Sinusoidal hyperbolic hollow Gaussian beams (ShHGBs). The intensity profiles included in the dataset are the ones of ShHGBs propagating for 6 km under the influence of six different atmospheric turbulence strengths. This study presents deep learning-based Resnet-50, EfficientNet, MobileNetV2, DenseNet121 and Improved+MobileNetV2 approaches for turbulence-induced disturbance detection and experimental evaluation results. In order to compare the experimental results, an evaluation is made by considering the accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-score criteria. As a result of the experimental evaluation, the average values for accuracy, precision, recall and F-score with the best performance of the improved method are given; average accuracy 0.8919, average precision 0.8933, average recall 0.8955 and average F-score 0.8944. The obtained results have immense potential to address the challenges associated with the turbulence effects on the performance of FSO systems.

A comprehensive survey of free-space optical communication – modulation schemes, advantages, challenges and mitigations

Abstract The demand for large bandwidth and high data rates in communication systems has become the main cause of the upgrade of traditional networks into free space optical (FSO) technology. FSO technology has gained significant popularity due to its easy deployment, high data rates, abundant bandwidth, enhanced security, and license-free spectrum utilization. However, the performance of FSO communication systems can be affected by certain limiting factors, such as changes in weather conditions during data transmission. To overcome these challenges and improve FSO performance, various modulation techniques are employed. This article presents a concise overview of the FSO communication system, highlighting different modulation techniques used to enhance its performance, as well as discussing its advantages, applications, and existing challenges. Some advanced modulation formats which are recently introduced in the field of FSO communication such as QPSK, DP-QPSK, QAM, and OFDM are also made part of this paper.

Free-Space Optical Communication Based on Mode Diversity Reception Using a Nonmode Selective Photonic Lantern and Equal Gain Combining

This paper experimentally investigates the perform-ance of free-space optical (FSO) communication based on mode diversity reception (MDR) using nonmode selective photonic lantern (NSPL) and equal gain combining (EGC). By employing a mode demultiplexer and combining technology in the receiver, the bit error rate (BER) and outage performance of FSO communication system can be significantly improved. However, different from diversity system with multiple receive apertures, the branches in mode diversity system are non-independent fading signals, which are influenced by not only atmospheric but also the modal crosstalk of mode demultiplexer. Therefore, we take into consideration the difference of mode demultiplexer and study four schemes for FSO mode diversity reception system: 1) NSPL with equal gain combining (NSPL-EGC), 2) NSPL with maximal ratio combining (NSPL-MRC), 3) mode selective photonic lantern with equal gain combining (MSPL-EGC), and 4) mode selective photonic lantern with equal gain combining (MSPL-MRC). Experimental results show that NSPL-EGC is the most suitable scheme for MDR with low implementation complexity, and the performance difference is less than 1 dB compared with the one using MRC at BER = 3.8×10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">−3</sup> under turbulence from weak to strong.

Effects of Atmospheric Turbulence on Optical Wireless Communication in NEOM Smart City

The foundation of any smart city requires an innovative and robust communication infrastructure. Many research communities envision free-space optical communication (FSO) as a promising backbone technology for the services and applications provided by such cities. However, the channel through which the FSO signal travels is the atmosphere. Therefore, the FSO performance is limited by the local weather conditions. The variation in meteorological variables leads to variations of the refractive index along the transmission path. These index inhomogeneities (i.e., atmospheric turbulence) can significantly degrade the performance of FSO systems. Thus, a practical implementation of the FSO link must carefully consider the atmospheric turbulence effect. This paper aims to investigate the feasibility of FSO communication for NEOM, a promising smart city in Saudi Arabia. We study the effect of weather conditions on FSO links using the micrometeorology model, taking into account actual weather data. The FSO performance in winter and summer was compared in terms of the bit error rate, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), link availability, and transmission distance. The study shows that the atmospheric turbulence strength is moderate and strong in winter and summer, respectively. The temperature has the biggest impact on the FSO system when compared to the other meteorological elements included in this study. Furthermore, at transmission distances less than 300 m, atmospheric turbulence does not significantly affect the FSO for the operating wavelength of 1550 nm. Furthermore, it has been shown that at transmission distances greater than 300 m, the SNR in summer is more than 18% higher than in winter. The findings of this research enable understanding of the effect of turbulence caused by NEOM weather on the FSO link, thus assisting engineers in establishing a reliable FSO backbone link by adjusting the relevant parameters.

Free Space Optics, Channel Models and Hybrid Modulation Schemes: A Review

Free space optical (FSO) communication system is a wireless communication technology which possess advantages such as huge license free bandwidth and high data carrying capacity among others. It has proved to be a viable solution towards the radio frequency spectrum crunch and hence has been applied in cellular back haul, earth to satellite links, deep space and defense among others. However, FSO performance is adversely affected by atmospheric turbulence and weather conditions. Different channel models are used to estimate the performance of FSO communication system. Meanwhile, different mitigation techniques have been proposed and analyzed over the years for improvement of FSO communication. Of late, hybrid modulation schemes have proved to be another research direction. In this article, we review the FSO channel models as well as hybrid modulation schemes that have been recently introduced to further improve the FSO performance. The conditional probability of error for the commonly used FSO modulation schemes are presented. Finally, the expressions for the bit error for the hybrid modulation schemes are also given.

Secrecy performance of FSO communication systems with non‐zero boresight pointing errors

Free space optical (FSO) communication is a promising candidate for the next generation (5G and beyond) wireless communication systems, due to its merits (i.e. low latency, high data rate, and license-free band, among others). However, atmospheric turbulence (AT) as well as pointing error (PE) are two of the main challenges with FSO communication that affect its performance. Here, the exact closed-form expression of the average secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability under the composite effect of AT and non-zero boresight PEs is evaluated. For all the regimes of the AT (weak to strong), a generalised Malaga distribution is used to model the channel fading gain of the FSO link. The expressions are generalised and valid for all turbulence, and are applicable for intensity modulation direct detection as well as heterodyne detection techniques.

FSO Communication: Benefits, Challenges and Its Analysis in DWDM Communication System

Free-space optical (FSO) communication is one of the choice of researchers for most of the bandwidth hungry applications in evolving networks where the deployment of optical fiber is not directly possible as a transmission medium. In this research article, benefits, challenges, applications and role of FSO is discussed in detail for evolving networks. Further, performance of FSO communication system is tested using four channels of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). Various simulations are performed on FSO including different weather conditions, that directly affect the link performance. Many important parameters such as distance, data rate, bit error rate, amplifier gain, transmitter power, and attenuation under different weather conditions are tested in this research work. The operation of FSO communication system is carried out in the range 760-850 nm where equal channel spacing is considered for the working of DWDM communication system. Moreover, a fair comparison of proposed system is also presented for its operation in two more bands i.e. C and L-band, to show which one offers better performance. Simulation are performed in licensed version of Optisystem 14.0 and MATLAB. For the analysis of proposed system, results are presented in the form of BER and Q-factor plots.

BER performance of FSO communication system with differential signaling over correlated atmospheric turbulence fading

Free space optical (FSO) communication system with differential signaling possesses the advantage of requiring no channel state information and avoiding computational load or link throughput reduction compared to the systems with conventional receivers. In this work, we investigate bit error rate (BER) performance of this system over partially and fully correlated atmospheric turbulence fading. In order to conduct the above analysis, we obtain a probability density functions (PDF) of the channel fading on the differential signals and derive our instantaneous BER using differential signaling scheme. Based on these results, we develop two closed-form mathematical expressions for the average BER under fully correlated and partially correlated fading in the convergent infinite series confirmed by Cauchy's ratio test. The accuracy of the derived BER expressions is demonstrated by the Monte Carlo simulations, and the analyses for the effects of the system parameters on the BER performance are provided.

Performance Comparison of Free-Space Optical (FSO) Communication Link Under OOK, BPSK, DPSK, QPSK and 8-PSK Modulation Formats in the Presence of Strong Atmospheric Turbulence

Abstract Free-space optical (FSO) communication system provides several advantages over radio frequency (RF) system offering high bandwidth, low cost, small space requirements and more secure transmission which is free from Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). However, when the transmitted light signal passes through the atmosphere it experiences attenuation and fluctuations due to atmospheric turbulence. This paper analyzes the bit error rate (BER) performance of FSO communication systems under strong atmospheric turbulence for on-off keying (OOK), binary phase-shift keying (BPSK), differential phase shift keying (DPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 8-phase shift keying (8-PSK) for link distances of 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 m. The probability density function (pdf) of the received irradiance is modelled using the gamma-gamma distribution model. It is found that the system exhibits the best BER performance and compensates the lowest power penalty at BER of 10 - 9 for BPSK modulation compared with other modulation techniques which makes BPSK more appropriate to be used with FSO turbulent system.

Performance analysis of free space optical communication systems over imprecise Málaga fading channels

In this paper, we investigate the performance of free space optical (FSO) communication systems over imprecise Málaga (M) turbulence induced fading channel, which is the generalized form of the Gamma–Gamma and K turbulence channels as well. In the analysis we first derive the probability distribution function and cumulative distribution function of the channel’s fading coefficient in the presence of channel estimation error. Then, we obtain the exact closed-form expressions of average bit error rate (BER), outage probability (OP), and ergodic channel capacity to quantify the performance of the considered system. Additionally, to provide further insights about the system performance in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, the asymptotic expressions of BER and OP are obtained. Furthermore, analytic results are successfully validated with Monte-Carlo simulations. The results show that the imprecise channel estimation has detrimental effects on the performance of FSO communication systems over M turbulence channels, e.g., an estimation error of 5% results in approximately 8 dB SNR loss for the BER value of 5×10−2.

Performance analysis of 349-element adaptive optics unit for a coherent free space optical communication system

As a continuation of our previous work [Optics Express.25, 15229(2017)] in which we have verified the performance of a coherent free space optical communication (FSOC) system with a 97-element adaptive optics (AO) system, in this paper, we evaluated the performance improvement of the coherent FSOC system using a large-scale high-speed AO system with a 349-element continuous surface deformable mirror. The mixing efficiency (ME) and bit-error-rate (BER) under different Greenwood frequency (GF) were calculated as the performance metric of coherent FSOC system. The performance of FSOC system using such a large-scale AO system was quantitatively verified for the first time. The obtained results showed that the performance was obviously improved when a larger-scale high-speed AO system is employed in coherent FSOC system. This analysis result provides a performance verification for large-scale high-speed AO systems used in FSOC system which is beneficial for coherent FSOC system parameters design.

BER and channel capacity of a deep space FSO communication system using L-PPM-MSK-SIM scheme during superior solar conjunction.

Although free space optical (FSO) communication is a promising technique for deep space communication and it can help in the rapid development of space exploration missions, it encounters coronal turbulence during superior solar conjunction. To improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of FSO communication system under the influence of coronal turbulence, a hybrid modulation scheme, L-PPM-MSK-SIM-which is a combination of pulse position modulation (PPM), minimum shift keying (MSK), and sub-carrier intensity modulation (SIM) techniques-is proposed in this study. Considering various noise sources, both the BER and channel capacity of the communication system are evaluated under the lognormal (LN) turbulence channel. Our simulation results demonstrate that the BER performance with the L-PPM-MSK-SIM scheme is superior to that with L-PPM and BPSK-SIM schemes. In addition, the parameters of the coronal turbulence and FSO communication system have a tremendous influence on the link BER and channel capacity. Moreover, our results also revel that thermal noise is more predominant than the short noise and background noise for the BER performance of deep space FSO communication.

Outage probability and average BER estimation of FSO system employing wavelength diversity

Free space optical (FSO) communication has gained significant attention among researchers for high bandwidth and secured data transfer applications. However, its performance is limited by the local atmospheric conditions. This paper focusses on an FSO system employing a diversity method to compensate signal loss occurred due to atmospheric turbulence conditions varying from moderate to strong. We derive a closed-form expression for two important parameters, viz.: average bit error rate (BER) and outage probability over gamma–gamma distribution channel. The numerical results for different combining schemes are presented in this paper. Enhancement in reliability and performance of FSO communication system with wavelength diversity is investigated. Effect of different wavelengths 850 nm, 1310 nm and 1550 nm on average BER is analysed and minimum BER is achieved for optimal combining at 1550 nm at diversity order $$R=3$$ .

Optimal Modulation Technique for MIMO FSO Link

In recent years, free space optical communication (FSO) has gained amorous importance and become an interesting alternative to radio frequency communication because of its numerous benefits over radio frequency communication. It is efficient, low power, high data rate, unlicensed spectrum, and large bandwidth wireless technology. Despite, these advantages FSO is prone to the atmospheric attenuation, but in order to compensate this problem the MIMO FSO system is considered to be a good solution. This paper analyzes the performance of 4*4 MIMO FSO system using different modulation schemes, NRZ, RZ, and CSRZ. The impact of varying, Link range, attenuation factor and transmits power on the performance of 4*4 MIMO FSO has been observed in terms of Quality factor and eye diagram while keeping the other parameters constant. The results show that the RZ modulation scheme using 4*4 MIMO FSO technique show better performance as compare to NRZ and CSRZ. For low attenuation and small link, RZ is superior to NRZ and CSRZ while for higher attenuation and larger link the performance of RZ and NRZ is equivalent. Overall RZ performs better than NRZ and CSRZ. It is also evident from the results that as the number of transmitter and receiver are increased, the efficiency of the system increases. With MIMO technology the performance of FSO system improves to a larger extent.

Effect of strong atmospheric non-Kolmogorov turbulence on the M-ary PSK subcarrier intensity modulated free space optical communications system performance.

Atmospheric turbulence is one of the significant phenomena that degrades the free space optical (FSO) communications system performance, and thus designers need to define the requirements related to turbulence and optimize the system design to ensure optimum performance. The subcarrier intensity modulation (SIM) shows superiority in terms of bandwidth usage over the other modulation techniques. Performance of FSO communication systems exercising M-ary phase-shift-keying (PSK) SIM with the PIN photodiode receiver is evaluated in non-Kolmogorov strong atmospheric turbulence when a Gaussian beam is used as the excitation. Bit-error-rate (BER) of PSK SIM FSO communication systems is examined, and the results are presented versus the non-Kolmogorov atmospheric turbulence and positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) photodetector parameters such as PIN photodetector responsivity, equivalent load resistor, modulation order, noise factor, bandwidth, propagation distance, and beam source size.

Performance Analysis of Free Space Optical (FSO) Over Week to Moderate Atmospheric Turbulence Along with Misalignment Error

This paper investigates BER performance of freespace optical (FSO) communication over strong turbulence channel together with pointing errors effects. Take atmospheric attenuation, atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors into account, a statistical model for the optical intensity fluctuation at the receiver is described. For given weather and misalignment conditions, a closed-form expression is derived for BER performance of FSO communication system. Moreover, the simulation results show that the closed-form expression can provide sufficient precision for evaluating BER performance of FSO communication systems.

Performance Analysis of IMC in FSO Systems Over Gamma–Gamma Channel

Free-space optical communication (FSO) offers high security and high bandwidth, which is why it is widely used in digital communication systems. However, atmospheric turbulence or scintillation induces a voluminous degradation to the signal. So, different modulation techniques are introduced to improve the performance of FSO systems. In this paper, a novel inverted Manchester code (IMC) and a 3 bits-per-symbol modulation format are proposed, referred to as IMC/BPSK. The BERs of the IMC/BPSK amplitude branch and phase branch are studied theoretically and numerically over the gamma–gamma channel model separately, and the capacity is also been studied. The simulation comparison with 8-PPM is also made. The results show that the BER performance of IMC/BPSK is better than that of 8-PPM with the same symbol rate. Therefore, the proposed modulation format is feasible, which can effectively improve the tolerance degree of the atmospheric turbulence effect.

Performance Investigation of FSO–OFDM Communication Systems under the Heavy Rain Weather

AbstractThe challenge in the free-space optical (FSO) communication is the propagation of optical signal through different atmospheric conditions such as rain, snow and fog. In this paper, an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing technique (OFDM) is proposed in the FSO communication system. Meanwhile, considering the rain attenuation models based on Marshal &amp; Palmer and Carbonneau models, the performance of FSO communication system based on the OFDM is evaluated under the heavy-rain condition in Changsha, China. The simulation results show that, under a heavy-rainfall condition of 106.18 mm/h, with an attenuation factor of 7 dB/km based on the Marshal &amp; Palmer model, the bit rate of 2.5 and 4.0 Gbps data can be transmitted over the FSO channels of 1.6 and 1.3 km, respectively, and the bit error rate of less than 1E − 4 can be achieved. In addition, the effect on rain attenuation over the FSO communication system based on the Marshal &amp; Palmer model is less than that of the Carbonneau model.

BER Analysis for BPSK Based SIM–FSO Communication System Over Strong Atmospheric Turbulence with Spatial Diversity and Pointing Errors

Free space optical communication (FSO) has much attention in recent years for the applications viz. inter-satellite, deep space communications, inter and intra chip communications. The performance of FSO systems sternly suffers from atmospheric turbulence due to the random nature of weather conditions. Spatial diversity is an emerging technique for improving the performance of the system over strong atmospheric turbulences. In this paper, the error rate performance of binary phase shift keying based subcarrier intensity modulated free space optical (SIM---FSO) communication system over gamma---gamma channel with pointing errors is investigated. Novel closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the average bit error rate of single-input multiple-output FSO (SIMO---FSO) system with various combining schemes. The error rate performance of SISO and SIMO---FSO systems are compared in terms of 2D and 3D plots.

Climate effects on performance of free space optical communication systems in Yemen

Free space optical (FSO) communication has been considered as an alternative to radio relay link line-of- sight (LOS) communication systems. The total attenuation is a combination of atmospheric attenuation in the atmosphere and geometric losses. The purpose of this paper is to study the geometric loss versus link range (in km), divergence angle, transmitter aperture diameter, and receiver aperture diameter. Total attenuation versus low visibility, average visibility, beam divergence, link range and rainfall rate were presented in this paper. Atmospheric attenuation (in dB) and scattering coefficient (in km -1 ) for several Yemeni main cities were explored. The study was concentrated on received power versus low and average visibilities and link range. Series of related simulation results were illustrated and discussed in this paper about the climate effects on performance of FSO communication systems in Yemen.
