Investigation of mixing techniques for full-strength-grade engineered cementitious composites (ECCs): Mechanical properties and microstructure

Mixing techniques significantly influence the performance of ECC by affecting both macro- and microstructural properties. Despite its importance, research on ECC mixing techniques remains limited, restricting broader exploration and application. This study investigates the effects of three mixing techniques using pan, handheld, and planetary mixers on the performance of full-strength-grade ECC, focusing on flowability, compressive strength, elasticity, tensile and flexural properties, and fiber bridging ability. CT scan-based 3D reconstructions provided insights into pore and fiber distribution. The findings indicate minimal variations in flowability, compressive strength, and elasticity across mixer types, all within 10 % of optimal performance. However, tensile strength showed significant variability at higher strength levels, with pan mixers exhibiting up to 72.25 % performance drop, while handheld mixers showed reductions of up to 25.78 %. Flexural performance remained robust across all mixers, with pan and handheld mixers achieving over 82 % and 92 % of the performance seen with planetary mixers, respectively. While porosity was similar across mixers at identical strength levels, pore size diversity increased with higher strength levels. Additionally, fiber distribution varied significantly. Planetary mixers achieved superior uniformity, whereas pan mixers exhibited significant clustering. These results provide a quantitative assessment of the mixing performance of different mixers, offering valuable guidance for both research and practical engineering applications.

Crack development and fracture performance of Recycled Powder Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC): Experimental investigation

In this paper, recycled concrete powder (RCP) and recycled brick powder (RBP), with particle sizes ranging from 10 to 130 μm, are used to completely replace the fine aggregate quartz sand at a ratio of 1:1. On this basis, recycled glass powder (RGP), with a discussed particle sizes range of 38–300 μm, is used to partially substitute the cementitious materials. Polyethylene (PE) fibers are used as the reinforcement in the Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC). Using the particle size range and substitution rate of RGP as variables, the crack development, crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD), fracture toughness and fracture energy of Recycled glass powder ECC (RGP-ECC) were discussed through a three-point bending experiment on a single-edge notch beam. A relatively comprehensive evaluation was made on the fracture performance and behavior of recycled ECC, and a suitable mix ratio of recycled powder ECC was given. The results show that the addition of various recycled powders will not affect the multi-slit cracking behavior of ECC, and the cracks can still spread densely, giving the specimen greater deformation capacity and CMOD. The total substitution of fine aggregate by RCP and RBP has a positive impact on the fracture toughness KICini, KICun and fracture energy (GF), but the addition of RGP has some minor negative effects. Among the particle size range and substitution rate of RGP, the influence of substitution rate is more obvious, and the fracture performance will show a downward trend after growth as the substitution rate increases. Choosing the appropriate RGP substitution rate and particle size range can maximize the recycling of construction waste while ensuring fracture performance.

Development of Green Engineered Cementitious Composite using Fly Ash and Nanosilica for 3D Printing

The effects of adding Nanosilica (NS) to Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) for 3D Printing (3DP) applications were investigated in this study. The mechanical characteristics of 3DP ECC mortar with different NS contents were investigated. The basic components of the composite included fly ash, M-sand, polypropylene fibers, Ordinary Portland Cement, nanosilica and an accelerator. There were four different mix proportions of NS involving 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.15%, and 0.2%. After 3, 7, 14, and 28 days of curing, the following strengths, viz., pull-out strength, direct tensile strength, compressive strength, and flexural strength were assessed. Addition of NS improved the mechanical properties of ECC up to an ideal level of 0.15%, after which decreasing returns and adverse effects, including agglomeration, were observed. Insights into the ideal NS content for obtaining maximum performance of ECC obtained from the study provide knowledge for formulations in high-performance 3DP technologies.

Seismic performance and estimation of flexural bearing capacity of prefabricated engineered cementitious composite shell–reinforced concrete composite column with grouted sleeve connection

Engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) have excellent crack control capacity and pseudo-strain-hardening behaviour. They can be used to improve the damage-tolerant capacity of vulnerable parts of structures. To improve the seismic performance of a traditional prefabricated column connected with grouted sleeves (GSs), an innovative prefabricated ECC shell–reinforced concrete (RC) composite column with GSs (ECC–PRC–GSs) is proposed in this paper. Then, three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models of the ECC–PRC–GSs are established and validated with previous experimental results. Subsequently, parametric analysis of the ECC–PRC–GSs is systematically performed to assess the seismic performance of ECC–PRC–GSs. Notably, certain important design suggestions for the ECC–PRC–GSs are proposed. Finally, a theoretical model is developed to predict the flexural bearing capacity of ECC–PRC–GSs based on the strain compatibility and force equilibrium conditions. The effectiveness of the model is verified through finite element analysis and experimental results.

Study on biaxial bending fatigue performance of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC)

Structural components such as bridge deck, highway pavement and thin-walled roof dome often are subjected to the biaxial and even multi-axis stress state due to the external load. Also, the fatigue effect cannot be ignored due to the moving vehicle load in the design of these structures. If engineering cementitious composites (ECC) is used in the above traditional concrete structures, their performance, such as easy cracking and short service life can be greatly improved. However, the biaxial bending fatigue performance of ECC should be analyzed in detail. At present, the biaxial bending test methods of cement-based materials include biaxial bending test (BFT) and centrally loaded round panel test (RPT). This study used both RPT and BFT test methods to analyze the biaxial fatigue performance of ECC and used four-point bending test (4PBT) uniaxial fatigue test as a reference. The stress levels S were set as 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7. The uniaxial and biaxial bending fatigue failure procedures of ECC were analyzed by plotting the three-stage deflection development curve, the fatigue damage and strain relationship curve based on the linear cumulative fatigue damage theory, and the S–N curve. The fatigue life of ECC biaxial bending specimens was greater than that of uniaxial bending specimens. At S = 0.5, the fatigue life: BFT > RPT. At S = 0.6, the fatigue life of BFT and RPT specimens was close. At S = 0.7, the fatigue life: BFT < RPT. With increasing stress level, the fatigue life of BFT specimen decreases more than that of RPT specimen. The lognormal distribution model and Weibull distribution model were used to fit the uniaxial and biaxial bending fatigue life of ECC, respsectively. Using the double logarithmic fatigue equation, fatigue life under the failure probability PF of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 was derived. The survival rate represents the level of safety reservation, which could provide reference and basis for the design of ECC bridge deck and highway pavement with different safety reservation requirements.

Influence of free water on compressive fatigue properties of ECC

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) with strain hardening characteristics have potential applications in hydraulic structures subjected to repeated or fatigue loads. In order to clarify the effect of free water on the compressive fatigue performance of ECC, the compressive fatigue tests of dry, saturated and water-submerged ECC under different stress levels were carried out. The failure mode and S-N curve of ECC were determined, and the fatigue life of ECC decreased in turn under dry, saturated, and water-submerged conditions. The strain rate of the second stage of ECC compression fatigue increases with the increase of water content and stress level. The failure strain of ECC fatigue increases with the decrease of stress level, and the fatigue failure strain of saturated and immersed specimens is larger than that of dry specimens at the same stress level. In addition, the stress level-fatigue failure strain (P-S-ε) equation considering the failure probability is established. To improve the credibility of this equation, the confidence γ is considered, and the γ-P-S-ε curves of all samples are obtained, which can predict the fatigue failure strain of ECC at a specific stress level.

Advancing seismic resilience: Performance-based assessment of mid-rise and high-rise engineered cementitious composite (ECC) Buildings

Engineering Cementitious Composites (ECC) have received wide attention in recent years due to their enhanced mechanical properties and ductility. These properties offer an opportunity to design structures with significantly improved seismic performance having a low-damage and ductile response. However, existing research studies primarily focus on the performance of ECC at material and member scales, resulting in a knowledge gap regarding its response at the structural level. This study examines the system-level seismic response of buildings designed using ECC and compares their performance with those having conventional reinforced concrete (RC) members. For this purpose, two RC shear wall buildings (7-story and 24-story) were selected as a case study, and their elements were separately designed (for the combined gravity and lateral loads) as RC and ECC elements using the guidelines recommended by the Japan Society of Civil Engineering (JSCE) and ACI (American Concrete Institute)−318–19. The design results show that the requirement of longitudinal steel is reduced by a maximum of 24% in ECC flexural members and by 15% in compression members, in addition to a significant reduction in the required transverse reinforcement as compared to the corresponding RC members. Similarly, owing to improved tensile behavior, the ECC members also exhibited a higher shear capacity than RC members. The detailed nonlinear finite element models of the case study buildings (for both the design cases i.e., ECC and RC) were subjected to monotonic and reversed-cyclic pushover analysis, and nonlinear time history analyses (NLTHA) under a set of selected ground motions. It was observed that ECC structures exhibited significantly improved lateral capacity, revered-cyclic response, and overall seismic performance as compared to the corresponding RC structures. These results demonstrate that ECC can be effectively used to design various members for improved seismic performance of buildings.

Development of sustainable low carbon Engineered Cementitious Composites with waste polyethylene fiber, sisal fiber and carbonation curing

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) is an advanced fiber-reinforced cementitious composite with high tensile ductility. However, the binder and fiber system in ECC incur high economic and environmental cost. In this study, a low carbon ECC was developed by substituting virgin polyethylene fiber with waste polyethylene fiber (WPE) from waste marine fishing nets. Carbonation curing was applied to further reduce embodied carbon footprint via direct CO2 mineralization. This research examined the low carbon ECC's mechanical properties, including compressive strength and tensile strength and ductility. The CO2 footprint and material costs of ECC were also investigated. The objective was to develop an ECC competitive to normal concrete economically and environmentally while maintain the unique ductile performance of ECC. Results suggest that carbonation-cured WPE reinforced ECC possesses 50% of the CO2 footprint and 37% of the cost of traditional concrete. Meanwhile, this low carbon ECC maintains at least 4 MPa tensile strength and 6% tensile ductility. This research demonstrates the feasibility of developing construction materials with low environmental impact while maintaining high performance for civil infrastructure applications. The adoption of WPE in ECC provides a plausible pathway to recycle marine waste into the construction industry that urgently needs to be decarbonized.

Impact of low temperature and NaCl attack on the fracture properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECC)

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) is a potential reinforcement and repair material for hydraulic structures due to its excellent mechanical properties. However, the fracture properties of ECC under the coupling effect of low temperature and chloride ions attack are still unclear. In this study, fracture experiments were performed on ECC specimens under different working conditions (immersed in water and NaCl solutions for different time (0, 30, 60, and 90d) and undergoing different freeze-thaw cycles (0, 25, 50, and 100 cycles) in NaCl solution) at experimental temperatures of 20 °C and −20 °C. The relationship between the depth of chloride ions erosion and the nominal fracture energy was analyzed. The effect of the coupled of temperature and chloride ions attack on the fracture performance of ECC under different working conditions was investigated. The results showed that: Under the loading condition of −20 °C, the fracture parameters of ECC under NaCl solution immersion were all lower than those of the water immersion group, indicating that extravasated chloride ions negatively impacted ECC's fracture properties. When ECC was loaded at −20 °C, the initiation fracture toughness and unstable fracture toughness of ECC under NaCl solution immersion were lower than those of the water immersion group, but the fracture energy was larger than that of the water immersion group, and when the specimens were immersed for 90 days, the drop in the fracture energy of ECC loaded at −20 °C compared to 20 °C for the NaCl solution immersion group was 59.1% less than 62.7% for the water immersion group; While loading at 20 °C revealed a linearly declining relationship between erosion depth and fracture energy, loading at −20 °C revealed no discernible pattern. The crack initiation fracture toughness of ECC gradually decreased with the increase of the freeze-thaw cycles, but the specimens' crack initiation fracture toughness following NaCl freezing at −20 °C was consistently larger than that at 20 °C. Following 100 freeze-thaw cycles on the specimens, the increase in initiation fracture toughness at −20 °C compared to 20 °C for the water freeze-thaw group was 128.4% less than that of the salt freeze-thaw group, which was 135.8%, while the decrease in fracture energy was 19.9% less than that of the salt freeze-thaw group, which was 46.3%. It shows that the repair effect of ice on ECC after NaCl freeze-thaw cycles is stronger than that of water freezing at the low temperature.

Microstructural evolution and dynamic compressive properties of engineered cementitious composites at elevated temperatures

This paper presents a comprehensive study on the microstructural evolution and quasi-static and dynamic compressive properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) at elevated temperatures (20, 105, 250, 400, 600 and 800 °C). Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) was adopted to investigate the compressive behaviour of ECC at various strain rates after exposure to elevated temperatures, while the corresponding microstructural evolution was characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), digital electron microscope and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) along with fractal analysis. Results indicate that ECC exhibited strain rate effect and high temperature sensitivity simultaneously. The residual dynamic compressive strength of ECC increased by 33.0–50.4% with the rising strain rate from 79.8 to 127.1 s−1. It reached the maximum value at 105 °C but reduced to 14.3−25.8% at 800 °C compared to that at 20 °C. The change in dynamic increase factor of ECC for various temperatures and strain rates can be well predicted using the developed equation. The thermal decomposition of PVA fibres was the main detrimental affecting the dynamic performance of ECC at sub-high temperatures (below 400 °C), whereas the negative effects caused by the formation of pores and microcracks in the matrix dominated at higher temperatures (400−800 °C). Microscopic damage induced by elevated temperatures aggravated the deterioration degree under dynamic compressive load, whilst the larger the difference in the macro/micro pore structural fractal dimension of 2.50/2.67, the greater the temperature softening effect on impact resistance of ECC.

Experimental and numerical investigation on the long-term performance of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) with high-volume fly ash and domestic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers

High-volume fly ash (FA) has been widely adopted to improve the mechanical properties and material greenness of engineered cementitious composites (ECC). However, the secondary hydration of fly ash leads to delayed strength gain over the long term, which may cause the composites to invalidate the long-term strain hardening performance. In this study, multiple-scale experiments conducted on ECC with high-volume FA (FA/cement = 4 by weight) and domestic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers at curing ages of 28, 90, 180, and 365 days showed that the fiber/matrix interfacial bonding, matrix compressive strength, and fracture toughness gradually increased with curing time and plateaued at a certain value after 180 days, while the tensile strain capacity continued to decrease with age. Based on the micromechanical parameters tested at different ages, a physical model was developed to simulate and reasonably predict the tensile performance of ECC with time. Design guidelines were proposed based on the model to enhance the robustness of the ECC's long-term performance.

Behavior of steel-ECC composite bridges under post-fire conditions

To solve the issue of cracking on the concrete slab, engineered cementitious composite (ECC) has been applied to steel-concrete composite bridges. However, few studies have been conducted on their behavior under post-fire conditions. In this study, experimental and numerical research on the steel-ECC composite bridge girders after elevated temperatures and different cooling methods are presented. The same testing conditions were used to evaluate the material properties of ECC, Q345 steel, and HRB400 rebars. Then, heating tests and loading tests were conducted sequentially on the steel-ECC composite bridge girders. Relevant thermal and structural responses, including heat transfer, load-deflection curves, failure modes, and strain distribution, were recorded. At last, a numerical model was validated with test data and utilized to further investigate the effect of fire load scenarios. Results from experiments indicated that cooling methods had a significant influence on the performance of ECC. Water cooling intensified the hydration reaction of ECC when heating up to 400 °C, thereby reducing the compressive strength. The width of cracks on the ECC slab was found to extend after water cooling. When heated up to 400 °C, the residual bearing capacity of composite girders reduced to 91.58% and 74.29% with natural cooling and water cooling, respectively. Moreover, numerical studies pointed out that fire load on the ECC slab rather than under the steel girder caused more damage to the steel-ECC bridges.

Micromechanics-based model of single crack propagation in Engineered cementitious composites (ECC)

Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) are composites exhibiting strain-hardening behavior accompanied by the formation of multiple cracks. A special feature of ECC is the ability to tune the material composition to meet the different needs of various structural components, which benefits from the special micromechanics-based design theory of ECC. However, these existing micromechanics-based design theories are specific to the case of direct tension and has not been fully discussed and developed for the case where the ECC is subjected to bending load. In this study, a micromechanics-based crack propagation model for ECC under bending load is developed to guide the design of flexural performance of ECC. The entire crack propagation process is simulated by considering the microstructure of ECC and the crack propagation criterion. For ECCs with different types of fiber, the simulated load-crack mouth opening displacement curves agree well with experimental results and the dispersion of the ECC specimens can be captured by imparting randomness to the model. Based on this model, parametric studies of several representative parameters are performed to illustrate the applicability of the model. The results indicate that the material has a higher ultimate flexural bearing capacity near a fiber aspect ratio of 448 for the given material property parameters; and the fiber/matrix bonding should not be excessively strong. Insights from this model can facilitate the design of ECC members with excellent bending properties through fiber tailoring and surface treatment.

Investigation on performance of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) based on surface modification of PET fibers using graphene oxide (GO) and polydopamine (PDA)

In order to reduce costs and use local materials to promote the application of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC), this paper investigated the performance of ECC reinforced by surface-modified PET fibers. Single fiber pullout, uniaxial tensile test, SEM and XPS were carried out to study the effects of the modification. The modification by coating the PET fibers with graphene oxide (GO) using polydopamine (PDA) as the medium resulted in a significant improvement in the surface roughness of PET fibers. The frictional bond strength between the fibers and cement matrix was increased by 78.8 % due to the bonding of GO with cement hydration products and the secondary functionalization of GO induced by PDA. For the ECCs prepared using 0.5 vol% PVA fibers and 1.5 vol% modified PET fibers, the tensile strength increased from 3.12 MPa to 3.81 MPa (22.1 %), and the tensile strain increased from 1.69 % to 2.85 % (68.7 %) compared to the untreated group. Moreover, with the increase of GO concentration in the secondary functionalization, both the bond strength of the fiber–matrix interface and tensile properties of ECCs were improved.

Performance of cost effective engineered cementitious composite in exterior beam‐column connections under cyclic loading

AbstractThe present research examines the structural performance of exterior beam‐column connections made with the hybrid use of fibers and stone waste in engineered cementitious composite (ECC). The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), recron 3 s polyester (PET) and micro steel fiber (MSE) were dispersed in various ECC mixtures to analyze the impact of fiber hybridization. The stone waste (SW) was utilized in different ECC mixtures as replacement of silica sand (SS). The performance of ECC beam‐column connection specimens was judged in terms of hysteresis load–deflection behavior, energy dissipation, ductility, and cracking pattern. The recorded results of ECC reinforced specimens were compared with specimens made with normal concrete (NC). Recorded results revealed that the connections made with ECCs exhibited better performance in terms of ductility and various parameters as compared to NC connections. The hybrid dispersion of fibers and addition of SW also contributed in improving the behavior of ECC specimens. The higher deformation, loading response, energy dissipation and ductility indicated that structures made with ECC can withstand strong ground earthquake motions.

Influence of Stone Processing Waste on Mechanical, Durability, and Ecological Performance of Hybrid Fiber-Reinforced Engineered Cementitious Composite

The current study is focused on the characteristics of sustainable engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) with the inclusion of various types of fibers (PVA, PET, and MSE) in hybridization, silica sand (SS), river sand (RS), and stone processing waste (SPW). SPW is termed as hazardous material because of the presence of finer particles and inorganic substances which contribute to leaching problems, and cause adverse effects on aquatic life and human health. The objective of this study was to introduce new kind of cost-effective, sustainable, and greener ECC to encourage its use in diversified applications. The characteristics of different ECC mixtures were assessed by observing the slump flow, compressive, tensile, flexural, ultrasonic pulse velocity, air permeability, electrical resistivity (ER), sorptivity, ecological behavior, and cost analysis. Experimental results revealed that the combination of micro-fibers enhanced the overall performance of ECC with reduction in the matrix cost. The addition of SPW in place of aggregates enhanced the flowability, strength, and durability characteristics, and contributed to reducing the carbon dioxide emissions. This study confirms that the combined use of PVA, PET, and MSE fibers with SPW inclusion is a promising alternative over the fully PVA blended ECC with SS.

Study on Mechanical and Rheological Properties of Solid Waste-Based ECC

As one of the main raw materials of engineered cementitious composite (ECC), fly ash exerts the “ball effect” and “pozzolanic effect” in concrete, which improves the working performance of concrete and enhances the strength of the concrete matrix. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber has been widely used in the preparation of ECC, while ground fly ash can be used to enhance the performance of ECC as a kind of high-activity admixture. In this paper, the compressive strength, flexural strength and flexural toughness of ECC prepared from different types of fly ash (raw fly ash, sorted fly ash and ground fly ash) are compared, and the rheological properties of the ECC are analyzed by studying the two parameters of yield stress and plastic viscosity. The results show that the smaller the particle size of fly ash is, the more sufficient it reacts with Ca(OH)2 produced by cement hydration, and the more it can improve the compressive strength and flexural strength of the matrix. In addition, the smaller the particle size of fly ash, the higher the yield stress and plastic viscosity of ECC; therefore, the distribution of PVA fiber in ECC is more uniform, thereby improving the flexural toughness and ductility of ECC.

An Experimental and Analytical Study on a Damage Constitutive Model of Engineered Cementitious Composites under Uniaxial Tension.

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) exhibit ultra-high ductility and post-cracking resistance, which makes it an attractive material in civil engineering. First, a monotonic uniaxial tensile test was performed, considering the effects of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber volume content and water-binder ratio. Then, the effects of the above variables on the tensile characteristics including the tensile stress–strain relationship, deformation capacity, and fracture energy were investigated based on test results; and when the water-binder ratio is 0.28 and the fiber volume content is 2%, the deformation performance of ECC is improved most significantly. Next, combined with damage mechanics theory, the damage evolution mechanism of ECC in monotonic uniaxial tension was revealed, based on which the damage factor and damage evolution equation of ECC were developed and the expressions of model parameters were proposed. Moreover, the comparison between the proposed model and test results demonstrated the accuracy of the proposed model. Finally, to further verify the feasibility of the proposed model, a finite element (FE) simulation analysis of the tensile performance of high-strength stainless steel wire rope (HSSWR) reinforced ECC by adopting the proposed model was compared with test results and the simulation analysis results by using anther existing model, the “trilinear model of ECC”. The comparison shows that the proposed model in this paper can predict more accurately.

Sustainable lightweight engineered cementitious composites using limestone calcined clay cement (LC3)

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) have superior ductility and durability. The intensive use of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in ECC, however, yields significant burdens on eco-system. To reduce the cement usage and improve the environmental performance of ECC, this study proposes to replace OPC and silica sand with limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) and fly ash cenosphere (FAC) to produce sustainable lightweight engineered cementitious composites (LW-ECC). The effect due to the weight fraction of LC3 (0%, 35%, 50%, and 65%) on the mechanical properties and microstructure of LC3-based LW-ECC were investigated. To understand the synergistic reaction mechanism, the thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), mercury intrusion porosimeter (MIP), environmental scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were conducted. Replacing OPC with LC3 slightly decreased compressive and tensile strength, and increased ductility. The high reactivity of LC3 decreased porosity and pore size. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to investigate the environmental performance. LC3-based LW-ECC achieved substantially lower environmental impacts than conventional ECC due to the replacement of cement with LC3. Though having negligible weight fraction, PE fiber and plasticizer dominated environmental impact in certain aspects.

Enhancing long-term tensile performance of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) using sustainable artificial geopolymer aggregates

Artificial geopolymer aggregate is an emerging technology in the field of solid waste recycling, aiming to ease the exploitation of natural aggregates as well as reduce the environmental burden of industrial/urban/agricultural waste and by-product accumulations. In this study, geopolymer aggregates (GPA) were strategically utilized to enhance long-term tensile performance and sustainability of high-strength Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC). Accelerated aging test was conducted to evaluate the long-term performance of GPA-ECC, with the conventional fine silica sand ECC (FSS-ECC) as the control group. It was found that after accelerated aging (i.e., to simulate long-term curing condition), the compressive and tensile strengths of both GPA-ECC and FSS-ECC increased. In addition, owing to the flaw effect of GPA, the long-term tensile ductility of GPA-ECC was maintained, while that of FSS-ECC decreased significantly. Compared with FSS-ECC, GPA-ECC showed better multiple cracking behavior, higher strain energy density, and finer crack width under both short- and long-term conditions. Finally, a cost analysis of ECC matrix was conducted to exhibit the cost-efficiency and sustainability of GPA-ECC. This study provides a sustainable approach for enhancing the long-term tensile performance of high-strength ECC based on artificial aggregates.
