EXPERIMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF CONSUMER UNBALANCE AND NONLINEARITY EFFECTS IN THREE-PHASE NETWORKS WITHOUT NEUTRAL CONDUCTOR

The present study proposes a feedforward angle droop strategy based on a discrete-time mathematical model for operation dispatchable distributed generation (DG) units connected directly or through voltage source converters (VSC) to the microgrid. These units should supply their local and common loads. Droop coefficients should be increased to improve power division between different DG units. Also, a time delay in systems’ state variables and controller input is a disruptive parameter for the control system's performance. These two parameters have negative effects on network stability. To ensure the stability of the closed-loop system, a predictive sliding mode controller can be used based on discrete-time systems. However, this strategy cannot reduce the chattering phenomenon. This paper discusses the effect of time delay and increases in droop angle coefficients on the whole system and how these impacts can be eliminated. So, a combination of integral sliding mode controller (ISMC), composite nonlinear feedback (CNF), and sliding mode learning control (SMC), which is called hybrid SMC, is used with an angle droop controller.

Collaborative human and computer controls of smart machines – A proposed hybrid control

Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) and Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) are evolving technologies that show the great potentials to extract and utilize humans’ intents in controlling smart machines. However, existing HMI and BCI technologies are limited in terms of (1) the number of Degrees- of-Freedom (DoF) to be controlled and (2) the ways the performance of BCI-enabled control systems are verified and validated. This study aimed to explore the solutions to addree both of above concerns; we proposed a hybrid control system that is capable of training, detecting, and interpreting humans’ intents, and utilizing humans’ intents in real-time controls of smart machines. More specifically, the system acquired brain signals in the form of Electroencephalography (EEG) by an Emotiv Epoc X and processed these signals to detect and extract humans’ intents in real-time machine controls. To cope with the frequency difference of humans’ thinking and machine motion controls, we developed a hybrid control module to fuse humans’ and machine's intelligence so that low-frequency humans’ intents could be used in real-time machine controls. The system was prototyped and verified experimentally. The system was verified to achieve the accuracy of over 90 % in recognizing humans’ intents and controlling a robot by the operator's intents with a satisfactory responding time and accuracy.

Robust observer-based-α-variable model-free supertwisting fractional order sliding mode control for nonlinear PEMFC system with uncertainties and disturbance

The service life and efficiency of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are significantly related to the control performance of the air supply system. Therefore, this research develops a novel robust observer-based- [Formula: see text]-variable model-free supertwisting fractional-order sliding mode control ([Formula: see text]-MF-STFOSMC) for complex nonlinear PEMFC air supply system with unmeasurable state variables, model uncertainties, and external disturbance. First, the fifth-order nonlinear PEMFC air supply system model is presented, and the unmeasured state variables are estimated using a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDOB1). Second, the ultra-local model (ULM) algorithm is employed to reconstruct the complex nonlinear PEMFC air supply system, avoiding the need for precise modeling and reducing the controller design difficulty. To estimate and compensate for the uncertain dynamics in the ULM algorithm, another NDOB2 is proposed to realize zero estimation error and finite-time observation. Besides, to achieve optimal control performance with less input chattering, finite-time convergence, and fast response speed, the [Formula: see text]-MF-STFOSMC is designed using super-twisting fractional-order sliding mode control (STFOSMC) algorithm. Furthermore, the stability of [Formula: see text]-MF-STFOSMC via a closed-loop system is verified using the Lyapunov theorem. Finally, the nonlinear PEMFC air supply system model with the proposed controller is realized in MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the simulation results are given to show the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Data quality control system and long-term performance monitor of LHAASO-KM2A

The KM2A is the largest sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). It consists of 5216 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs). The data recorded by the EDs and MDs are used to reconstruct primary information of cosmic-ray and gamma-ray showers. To ensure the reliability of the LHAASO-KM2A data, a three-level quality control system has been established. It is used to monitor the status of detector units, stability of reconstructed parameters and the performance of the array based on observations of the Crab Nebula and Moon shadow. This paper will introduce the control system and its application on the LHAASO-KM2A data collected from August 2021 to July 2023. During this period, the pointing and angular resolution of the array were stable. From the observations of the Moon shadow and Crab Nebula, the results achieved using the two methods are consistent with each other. For example, according to the observation of the Crab Nebula with KM2A at energies from 25 TeV to 100 TeV, the time averaged pointing errors are estimated to be −0.003°±0.005° and 0.001°±0.006° in the R.A. and Dec directions, respectively.

Barrier Lyapunov Based Adaptive Control for Hydraulic Servo Systems with Parametrical Nonlinearities and Modeling Uncertainties

Load variations, friction, and external disturbance degrade the control performance of hydraulic servo systems. To attain the high precision trajectory tracking performance for the hydraulic servo systems, a barrier Lyapunov based adaptive controller (BLBAC) is proposed in this paper. For the controller, the adaptive law is developed in each step of backstepping design such that the tracking error can converge to a prescribed accuracy. The state-constrained control of hydraulic servo systems is another issue worthy of attention. Hence, a novel time-varying asymmetric barrier Lyapunov function (TABLF) are adopted to guarantee that the states are not to violate their constraints. The closed-loop signals stability is proved by Lyapunov theory. Comparative simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller in comparison with the other two controllers for hydraulic servo systems.

Comparison study of two control strategies for the small pressurized water reactor

The control strategy has a significant impact on the control performance of the reactor system. This paper investigates the feedwater flow and steam flow control strategies for small pressurized water reactors. First, the mathematical model of the SPWR Nuclear Steam Supply System is introduced. Second, a dual-constant control strategy was proposed, and the feedwater flow rate and steam pressure control systems under the two control modes were designed. Moreover, a steam bypass control system was designed to avoid excessive steam pressure under the feedwater flow control mode, and the reactor power and pressurize control systems were introduced. Simulation results indicate that the two control modes both meet the SPWR control requirements. However, the feedwater flow control mode has better reactor coolant temperature and steam pressure control performances during the load rejection transient, owing to the timely discharge of heat from the reactor coolant system through the steam bypass system.

PID Controller Design for an E. coli Fed-Batch Fermentation Process System Using Chaotic Electromagnetic Field Optimization

This paper presents an optimal tuning of a proportional integral differential (PID) controller used to maintain glucose concentration at a desired set point. The PID controller synthesizes an appropriate feed rate profile for an E. coli fed-batch cultivation process. Mathematical models are developed based on dynamic mass balance equations for biomass, substrate, and product concentration of the E. coli BL21(DE3)pPhyt109 fed-batch cultivation for bacterial phytase extracellular production. For model parameter identification and PID tuning, a hybrid metaheuristic technique—chaotic electromagnetic field optimization (CEFO)—is proposed. In the hybridization, a chaotic map is used for the generation of a new electromagnetic particle instead of the electromagnetic field optimization (EFO) search strategy. The CEFO combines the exploitation capability of the EFO algorithm and the exploration power of ten different chaotic maps. The comparison of the results with classical EFO shows the superior behaviour of the designed CEFO. An improvement of 30% of the objective function is achieved by applying CEFO. Based on the obtained mathematical models, 10 PID controllers are tuned. The simulation experiments show that the designed controllers are robust, resulting in a good control system performance. The closed-loop transient responses for the corresponding controllers are similar to the estimated models. The settling time of the control system based on the third PID controller for all estimated models is approximately 9 min and the overshoot is approximately 15%. The proposed CEFO algorithm can be considered an effective methodology for mathematical modelling and achievement of high quality and better performance of the designed closed-loop system for cultivation processes.

Fast fixed-time extended state observer based command filtering backstepping control of free-flying flexible-joint space robots

System parameter perturbations, external disturbances, and input saturation issues seriously affect the on-orbit operation precision and rapid response capabilities of the free-flying flexible-joint space robots (FFSR). To this end, a fixed-time extended state observer (ESO) based non-singular command filtering backstepping controller is proposed. The fast fixed-time ESO is designed to estimate the parameter perturbations and external disturbances. To avoid the “computational explosion” caused by multiple derivatives of the virtual control law in backstepping control, a second-order command filter is employed to obtain the derivative of virtual control laws. Meanwhile, to reduce the filtering errors induced by the command filter, a non-singular fixed-time filtering error compensation algorithm is developed. Furthermore, considering the constraints of control moment gyroscope (CMG) and joint motors, an anti-saturation compensation algorithm is introduced to drive the system out of the saturated region rapidly, thus reducing actuator saturation effects on the control system performance. Theoretical analysis shows the proposed controller can ensure the system tracking error converges to any arbitrarily small neighborhood of the origin within fixed time. Simulation results demonstrate that the designed non-singular fixed-time command filtering backstepping controller exhibits fast convergence speed and high tracking accuracy.

A multi-objective co-optimization method of controller parameters for the overall system of small pressurized water reactor

Small pressurized water reactors (SPWRs) normally have complicated and varying working conditions, and become an important direction for nuclear energy development. The overall system of SPWR, including the reactor coolant average temperature control system, the feedwater control system of the once-through steam generator (OTSG), the steam turbine speed control system and the steam dump control system, is used to guarantee the safe and stable operation. The overall system of SPWR is designed with multiple PI controllers. To accomplish intelligent self-tuning of PI controller parameters, reduce the dependence on human engineering experience, and improve the control performance of the overall system, a multi-objective co-optimization method(MMOCO) with PI controller parameters for overall system of SPWR is proposed. Firstly, based on the coordinated control theory and PI control algorithm, the overall system of SPWR is established. Then, a MMOCO for the overall system of SPWR is designed with the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Finally, to compare the performance of the controller parameters derived from the MMOCO and the controller parameters obtained via the engineering tuning method, step load decrease transients are selected. The results show that the ability to control the overall system of SPWR is effectively improved after applying the MMOCO.

Temperature Control System Design Via Fuzzy PID

This paper investigates the integration of Fuzzy Logic with PID (Proportional, Integral, Derivative) controllers to enhance the performance of temperature control systems. Traditional PID controllers, widely used in various applications, often encounter difficulties with nonlinear, time-varying, and uncertain systems, resulting in performance issues like oscillations and overshoots. To mitigate these challenges, the adoption of Fuzzy PID control, which improves adaptability, robustness, and responsiveness by incorporating fuzzy logic into the control mechanism. The study involves simulations using Simulink to compare three distinct control models: conventional PID, standalone Fuzzy Control, and the hybrid Fuzzy PID Control across standardized control scenarios. Our results show that Fuzzy PID controllers significantly outperform traditional methods, especially in complex environments lacking precise mathematical modeling. The enhanced system response times and stability demonstrated by Fuzzy PID controllers suggest substantial potential for broader application across diverse industries, promising considerable improvements in operational efficiency and reliability.

Virtual feedback control of interior road noise based on headrest loudspeakers

This paper analyzes the factors that affect the noise reduction performance of feedback control based on remote microphone technique (RMT) and how these factors can be exploited to improve the control performance. First, simulations were conducted to compare the noise reduction performance of employing feedback control directly at the virtual microphone (located at the ear position) and on the physical microphone (located on the headrest), as well as the RMT-based feedback control system. Then the impact of the delay of the virtual secondary path and the coherence between physical and virtual signals on the noise reduction performance of the RMT-based feedback control system was analyzed. It is found that the noise reduction performance can be improved by reducing the delay of the virtual secondary path or increasing the number of physical microphones. Finally, experiments of a dual-channel control system conducted inside an electric car cabin demonstrate that the feedback control strategy based on RMT achieves a binaural noise reduction of 3.4 dBA when employing 4 physical microphones to estimate sound pressure at the ear positions. This approach achieves similar performance but is more cost-effective than a feedforward system using multiple reference sensors.

Improving stability and performance in IoT-Driven networked control systems

With the widespread adoption and benefits of the Internet of Things (IoT), this technology has expanded its reach into the realm of automation and control, giving rise to a branch known as industrial networks. The use of IoT technology is on the rise due to its daily increasing advantages and ease of use. However, it has also introduced new challenges in control systems, prompting researchers to conduct numerous studies to address these challenges and propose innovative solutions. One of these challenges, for example, is the limited bandwidth of the network, which leads to challenging issues such as variable random time delays and packet loss. In light of these challenges, using networked control systems instead of many traditional control methods can significantly improve the performance and stability of closed-loop systems. In this context, this paper aims to enhance system tolerance and reliability, along with permanent state error correction, by presenting methods for designing networked controllers that are influenced by random delays. To achieve this goal, we first propose a predictive control model with reduced prediction horizons, assuming constant delays in the input. This controller not only ensures stability but also tracks the reference input. Simulation results demonstrate that this controller can tolerate some variations in delay despite being designed for constant delays. However, it is not robust against significant variations in delay inherent to network environments. Therefore, in the second approach, a controller based on the Lyapunov function and linear matrix inequalities is designed for a system with time-varying input delays. This controller, in addition to stabilizing the system, tracks the reference input by minimizing the state error.

Study on Multi-Span Tension Coupling Relationship of Gravure Printed Electronic Equipment

To improve the performance of the tension control system in gravure printed electronic equipment, it is necessary to study the tension system model of gravure-printing electronic equipment. This paper focuses on the coupling characteristics of multi-span tension systems. Firstly, based on the single-span tension model, the mathematical model of the printing tension subsystem is established and simplified into a general multi-span tension coupling model. Then, using the relationship between the inputs and outputs of the system, the coupling model is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and verified through experiments on the gravure printed electronic platform. Finally, the coupling relationship and influence laws among multi-physical quantities of the system are analyzed. The research results show that changes in the input web tension of the multi-span system will affect the steady-state tension values of all subsequent spans. Moreover, the speed change in a roller in the multi-span system will not only affect the steady-state tension value of its own span, but also cause transient tension fluctuations in all subsequent spans. The findings of this paper provide an important theoretical basis for the research of the tension system in gravure printed electronic equipment, contributing to the enhancement of printed electronic product quality.

Tuning equations for sliding mode controllers: An optimal multi-objective approach for non-minimum phase systems

This article proposes an approach to create tuning equations based on optimal multi-objective design specifically for Sliding Mode controllers applied to non-minimum phase processes that can be approximated to a First-Order-Plus-Deadtime class of systems. This is achieved by taking into account various performance criteria, including tracking, controller action, and transient response. The proposed tuning equations aim to achieve a well-balanced trade-off among competing objectives. The paper presents a systematic framework for formulating the multi-objective optimization problem and derives analytical expressions for the tuning parameters based on the desired performance specifications. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through simulations in three dynamic processes: a high-order linear system with dominant delay, a high-order plus inverse response system, and a nonlinear process with variable parameters and dominant deadtime. A comparative analysis with an existing SMC tuning technique shows superior performance results. This paper provides valuable information on the optimization procedure for obtaining analytical tuning equations for controllers, offering a promising avenue for improving the performance of control systems in practical applications.

Modeling of servo dynamic stiffness for multiple-periodic repetitive learning control system

Servo dynamic stiffness is a pivotal index in characterizing the rejecting performance for the exogenous periodic disturbances of the repetitive learning control system. In this paper, the mathematical modeling of the servo dynamic stiffness for the well-designed repetitive learning control system with multiple-periodic signals is studied by the frequency analysis method. To analysis the complex form of the servo dynamic stiffness, the magnitudes of the direct (real part) and quadrature (imaginary part) servo dynamic stiffness at harmonics of the disturbance are discussed based on the parameters of the repetitive learning controller. An illustrated example of the two linear servomotors with the mechanical coupling is given in this study. Computer simulation are presented to illustrate the effect of the proposed measurement method of the servo dynamic stiffness for the multiple-periodic repetitive learning control system. The proposed servo dynamic stiffness modeling can be used to accurate design the parameters of the repetitive learning control system, such that the batter control performance of the repetitive learning control system at most of the harmonics of the multi-periodic input signal can be achieved.

A framework for assessing the energy performance of Personalized Environmental Control Systems (PECS) for heating, cooling and ventilation

This study presents a methodological framework for assessing the energy performance of Personal Environmental Control Systems (PECS), aiming to address the existing gaps in standardized evaluation approaches. Initially, a systematic approach to delineate the distinct spatial control volumes associated with PECS is presented, facilitating the classification and comparison of various system types. Utilizing this framework, the study introduces definitions for energy efficiency and effectiveness specific to PECS, providing a procedure for the experimental assessment of the quantities related to these definitions. To validate the proposed framework, the method was applied to an illustrative case study involving two PECS under varying operational conditions – heating and cooling. The experimental results provide insights into the energy performance of the evaluated PECS, highlighting the framework's applicability and effectiveness in assessing their energy efficiency. The study underscores the importance of systematically evaluating PECS energy performance, offering a robust methodology that can guide future research and development efforts in this domain.

Evaluating the real-world usability of BCI control systems with augmented reality: a user study protocol.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) enable users to control devices through their brain activity. Motor imagery (MI), the neural activity resulting from an individual imagining performing a movement, is a common control paradigm. This study introduces a user-centric evaluation protocol for assessing the performance and user experience of an MI-based BCI control system utilizing augmented reality. Augmented reality is employed to enhance user interaction by displaying environment-aware actions, and guiding users on the necessary imagined movements for specific device commands. One of the major gaps in existing research is the lack of comprehensive evaluation methodologies, particularly in real-world conditions. To address this gap, our protocol combines quantitative and qualitative assessments across three phases. In the initial phase, the BCI prototype's technical robustness is validated. Subsequently, the second phase involves a performance assessment of the control system. The third phase introduces a comparative analysis between the prototype and an alternative approach, incorporating detailed user experience evaluations through questionnaires and comparisons with non-BCI control methods. Participants engage in various tasks, such as object sorting, picking and placing, and playing a board game using the BCI control system. The evaluation procedure is designed for versatility, intending applicability beyond the specific use case presented. Its adaptability enables easy customization to meet the specific user requirements of the investigated BCI control application. This user-centric evaluation protocol offers a comprehensive framework for iterative improvements to the BCI prototype, ensuring technical validation, performance assessment, and user experience evaluation in a systematic and user-focused manner.

Switching Frequency Improvement of a High Speed on/off Valve Based on Pre-excitation Control Algorithm

The high-speed on/off valve (HSV) serves as the fundamental component responsible for generating discrete fluids within digital hydraulic systems. As the switching frequency of the HSV increases, the properties of the generated discrete fluid approach those of continuous fluids. Therefore, a higher frequency response characteristic of HSV is the key to ensure the control accuracy of digital hydraulic systems. However, the current research mainly focuses on its dynamic performance, but neglect its FRC. This paper presents a theoretical analysis demonstrating that the FRC of the HSV can be enhanced by minimizing its switching time. The maximum switching frequency (MSF) is mainly determined by opening dynamic performance when HSV operates with low switching duty ratio (SDR), whereas the closing dynamic performance limits the MSF when HSV operates with high SDR. Building upon these findings, the pre-excitation control algorithm (PECA) is proposed to reduce the switching time of the HSV, and consequently enhance its FRC. Experimental results demonstrate that PECA shortens the opening delay time of HSV by 1.12 ms, the closing delay time by 2.54 ms, and the closing moving time by 0.47 ms in comparison to the existing advanced control algorithms. As a result, a larger MSF of 417 Hz and a wider controllable SDR range from 20% to 70% were achieved at a switching frequency of 250 Hz. Thus, the proposed PFCA in this paper has been verified as an effective and promising approach for enhancing the control performance of digital hydraulic systems.
