In an experiment , two locations were selected one indoor and one outdoor , in Tehran ; to study the size distribution of particulates . Samples were taken simultaneously at two locations in six days intervals by ANDERSEN 2000 INC . 1 ACFM particle fractionating ( non _ viable ) sampler ; which is multi stage multi orifice , cascade impactor . Preweighed and preconditioned fiber glass filters were used on collection plates ; after sampling and conditioning of filters , size distribution of particles in 8 stages were determined gravimetrically by Mettler ME 22 digital micro balance . Results of experiments drawn on log probability graphs show that on average indoor samples contain more percentage of smaller particles i.e. more than 50 percent of size distribution is less than 3.3 micron E.C.D ( effective cutoff diameter ) ; whereas outdoor samples contain 66 percent above 9.0 micron E.C.D. . The highest percentage of size distribution for indoor is % 18.66 for 3.3 microns E.C.D and for outdoor is % 33.75 which is for 9.0 microns and above ; and least percentage for indoor is % 3.01 for 0.4 microns and for outdoor is % 1.25 for 0.4 microns . These results show that from view point of penetration of particulates towards trachea , bronchi and alveoli ; indoor is more hazardous than outdoor .
