Minimal solution to the axion isocurvature problem from nonminimal coupling

The main limitation for preinflationary breaking of Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is the upper bound on the Hubble rate during inflation from axion isocurvature fluctuations. This leads to a tension between high scale inflation and QCD axions with grand unified theory scale decay constants, which reduces the potential for a detection of tensor modes at next generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. We propose a mechanism that explicitly breaks PQ symmetry via nonminimal coupling to gravity, that lifts the axion mass above the Hubble scale during inflation and has negligible impact on today’s axion potential. The initially heavy axion gets trapped at an intermediate minimum during inflation given by the phase of the nonminimal coupling, before it moves to its true CP-conserving minimum after inflation. During this stage, it undergoes coherent oscillations around an adiabatically decreasing minimum, which slightly dilutes the axion energy density, while still being able to explain the observed dark matter relic abundance. This scenario can be tested by the combination of next generation CMB surveys like CMB-S4 and LiteBIRD with haloscopes such as ABRACADABRA, DMRadio, or CASPEr-Electric. Spectrum of global string networks and the axion dark matter mass

Cold dark matter axions produced in the post-inflationary Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scenario serve as clear targets for their experimental detection, since it is in principle possible to give a sharp prediction for their mass once we understand precisely how they are produced from the decay of global cosmic strings in the early Universe. In this paper, we perform a dedicated analysis of the spectrum of axions radiated from strings based on large scale numerical simulations of the cosmological evolution of the Peccei-Quinn field on a static lattice. Making full use of the massively parallel code and computing resources, we executed the simulations with up to 112643 lattice sites, which allows us to improve our understanding of the dependence on the parameter controlling the string tension and thus give a more accurate extrapolation of the numerical results. We found that there are several systematic effects that have been overlooked in previous works, such as the dependence on the initial conditions, contaminations due to oscillations in the spectrum, and discretisation effects, some of which could explain the discrepancy in the literature. We confirmed the trend that the spectral index of the axion emission spectrum increases with the string tension, but did not find a clear evidence of whether it continues to increase or saturates to a constant at larger values of the string tension due to the severe discretisation effects. Taking this uncertainty into account and performing the extrapolation with a simple power law assumption on the spectrum, we find that the dark matter mass is predicted in the range of m a ≈ 95–450 μeV.

Singlet–doublet Dirac Fermion dark matter from Peccei–Quinn symmetry

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) and axions are arguably the most compelling dark matter (DM) candidates in the literature. Here, we consider a model where the Peccei–Quinn (PQ) symmetry solves the strong CP problem, generates radiatively Dirac neutrino masses and gives origin to a multicomponent dark sector. Specifically, scotogenic Dirac neutrino masses arise at one-loop level. The lightest fermionic mediator acts as the second DM candidate due to a residual [Formula: see text] symmetry resulting from the PQ symmetry breaking. The WIMP DM component resembles the well-known singlet–doublet fermion DM. While the lower WIMP dark mass region is usually excluded, our model reopens that portion of the parameter space (for DM masses below [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]GeV). Therefore, we perform a phenomenological analysis that addresses the constraints from direct searches of DM, neutrino oscillation data and charged lepton flavor violating processes. The model can be tested in future facilities where neutrino telescopes search for DM annihilation into Standard Model particles.

Cosmological dynamics of string theory axion strings

The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion may solve the strong CP problem and explain the dark matter (DM) abundance of our Universe. The axion was originally proposed to arise as the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of global U(1)PQ Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking, but axions also arise generically in string theory as zero modes of higher-dimensional gauge fields. In this work we show that string theory axions behave fundamentally differently from field theory axions in the early Universe. Field theory axions may form axion strings if the PQ phase transition takes place after inflation. In contrast, we show that string theory axions do not generically form axion strings. In special inflationary paradigms, such as D-brane inflation, string theory axion strings may form; however, their tension is parametrically larger than that of field theory axion strings. We then show that such QCD axion strings overproduce the DM abundance for all allowed QCD axion masses and are thus ruled out, except in scenarios with large warping. A loop-hole to this conclusion arises in the axiverse, where an axion string could be composed of multiple different axion mass eigenstates; a heavier eigenstate could collapse the network earlier, allowing for the QCD axion to produce the correct DM abundance and also generating observable gravitational wave signals. Meso-inflationary QCD axion

We study the possibility that the axion Peccei-Quinn symmetry is spontaneously broken after the beginning of inflation. This scenario interpolates between preinflationary and postinflationary axion cosmology with significant phenomenological differences from both. Since the axion is not present at the early stages of inflation large inflationary fluctuations are produced only at scales not constrained by cosmic microwave background (CMB), avoiding the strongest isocurvature constraints. The energy density in isocurvature perturbations at short scales however can be comparable with the adiabatic contribution from misalignment. These large overdensities can lead to the formation of axion miniclusters and also to constraints from Lyman-$\ensuremath{\alpha}$ forest and future CMB spectral distortion measurements. If Peccei-Quinn symmetry is broken during the first O(25) $e$-foldings of inflation no axions are produced from the string network but contributions from the annihilation of domain walls can further boost the abundance. This scenario is minimally realized if the Hubble scale during inflation drops below the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scale but other realizations are possible.

Heating up Peccei-Quinn scale

We discuss production of QCD axion dark matter in a novel scenario, which assumes time-varying scale of Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking. The latter decreases as the Universe's temperature at early times and eventually stabilises at a large constant value. Such behavior is caused by the portal interaction between the complex field carrying Peccei-Quinn charge and a Higgs-like scalar, which is in thermal equilibrium with primordial plasma. In this scenario, axions are efficiently produced during the parametric resonance decay of thecomplex Peccei-Quinn field, relaxing to the minimum of its potential in the radiation-dominated stage. Notably, this process is not affected by the Universe's expansion rate and allows to generate the required abundance of dark matter independently of an axion mass. Phenomenological constraints on the model parameter space dependon the number density of radial field fluctuations, which are also generically excited along with axions, and the rate of their thermalization in the primordial plasma.For the ratio of radial field and axion particles number densities larger than ∼ 0.01 at the end of parametric resonance decay, the combination of cosmological and astrophysical observations with the CAST limit confinesthe Peccei-Quinn scale to a narrow range of values ∼ 108 GeV, —this paves the way for ruling out our scenario with the near future searches for axions.

Axion quality and fifth force

We investigate what it takes for the axion to address the strong $CP$ problem in the presence of explicit Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking effects besides the strong interaction. In cases where the Peccei-Quinn-Higgsing scalar field directly couples to the Standard Model sector, it is pointed out that existing fifth force experiments can set better constraints on the axion quality over neutron electric dipole moment.

Statistical Uncertainties of the $N_\text{DW} = 1$ QCD Axion Mass Window from Topological Defects

We review results from QCD axion string and domain wall simulations and propagate the associated uncertainties, including QCD uncertainties, into the calculation of the axion relic density. We compare two different sets of studies and, using cosmological constraints, perform statistical inference on the axion mass window in the post-inflationary Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scenario. For dark matter axions in recent simulations inferring a moderately infrared-dominated spectrum, this leads to a median dark matter axion mass of 0.50 meV, while the 95% credible interval at highest posterior density is between 0.48 and 0.52 meV. For alternative simulations including in addition string-domain wall decays (but with different overall inference on the spectrum), these numbers are 0.22 meV and [0.16, 0.27] meV. Relaxing the condition that axions are all of the dark matter, the axion mass window is completed by an upper bound of around 80 meV, which comes from dark radiation constraints. This confirms that the axion mass can be constrained rather precisely regarding statistical uncertainties and further calls for a more detailed analysis of the various sources of systematic uncertainties plaguing the simulations.

The minimal UV-induced effective QCD axion theory

The characteristic axion couplings could be generated via effective couplings between the Standard Model (SM) fermions to a pseudo-Goldstone from a high-scale U(1) Peccei–Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking. Assuming that the UV-induced effective operators generate necessary couplings before the PQ symmetry breaking, and any low-scale couplings to the SM are restricted to the Yukawa sector, three minimal natural scenarios can be formulated, which provide a connection between the QCD axions and mediators at the GUT/string scales. We find that the PQ symmetry breaking scale could be about [Formula: see text] GeV, higher than the classical QCD dark matter axion window but possible if the anthropic window is considered. We also propose an experiment to probe such scenarios. If the dark matter axion is discovered, they might suggest that we live in an atypical Hubble volume.

Cosmological effects of Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking on QCD axion dark matter

We study cosmological effects of explicit Peccei-Quinn breaking on the QCD axion dark matter. We find that the axion abundance decreases or increases significantly depending on the initial position, even for a tiny Peccei-Quinn breaking that satisfies the experimental bound of the neutron electric dipole measurements. If the axion first starts to oscillate around a wrong vacuum and if it gets trapped there until the false vacuum disappears due to non-perturbative QCD effects, its abundance increases significantly and is independent of the decay constant fa , as first pointed out in ref. [1]. Thus, the axion produced by the trapping mechanism can explain dark matter even when the decay constant is close to the lower limit due to stellar cooling arguments. On the other hand, if the axion starts to oscillate about a potential minimum close to the low-energy vacuum, its abundance is significantly reduced because of the adiabatic suppression mechanism. This relaxes the upper limit of the axion window to large values of fa . We also discuss how the axionic isocurvature perturbation is affected by the Peccei-Quinn breaking term, and show that it can be suppressed in both regimes. In particular, the isocurvature bound on the inflation scale is relaxed by many orders of magnitudes for fa ≳ 1011 GeV compared to the conventional scenario.

Singlet fermion dark matter and Dirac neutrinos from Peccei-Quinn symmetry

The Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism not only acts as an explanation for the absence of strong CP violation but also can play a main role in the solution to other open questions in particle physics and cosmology. Here we consider a model that identifies the PQ symmetry as a common thread in the solution to the strong CP problem, the generation of radiative Dirac neutrino masses and the origin of a multicomponent dark sector. Specifically, scotogenic neutrino masses arise at one loop level with the lightest fermionic mediator field acting as the second dark matter (DM) candidate thanks to the residual $Z_2$ symmetry resulting from the PQ symmetry breaking. We perform a phenomenological analysis addressing the constraints coming from the direct searches of DM, neutrino oscillation data and charged lepton flavor violating (LFV) processes. We find that the model can be partially probed in future facilities searching for WIMPs and axions, and accommodates rates for rare leptonic decays that are within the expected sensitivity of upcoming LFV experiments.

Challenges for heavy QCD axion inflation

We examine the theoretical possibility for the heavy QCD axion to induce slow-roll inflation while solving the strong CP problem through the Peccei-Quinn mechanism. If the cancellation between contributions from a small-size instanton and another Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking occurs with high accuracy, the potential can be flattened enough near its maximum to achieve hilltop inflation. This comes at the cost of severe fine-tuning of their relative size and phase, but it also allows us to relate the high quality problem of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry to the fine-tuning problem of the hilltop inflation. There are two classes of such axion hilltop inflation, each giving a different relation between the axion mass at the minimum and the decay constant. The first class predicts the relation m ϕ ∼ 10-6 f ϕ, and the axion can decay via the gluon coupling and reheat the universe. Most of the predicted parameter region will be covered by various experiments such as CODEX, DUNE, FASER, LHC, MATHUSLA, and NA62 where the production and decay proceed through the same coupling that induced reheating. The second class predicts the relation m ϕ ∼ 10-6 f 2 ϕ/M pl. In this case, the axion mass is much lighter than in the previous case, and one needs another mechanism for successful reheating. The viable decay constant is restricted to be 108 GeV ≲ f ϕ ≲ 1010 GeV, which will be probed by future experiments on the electric dipole moment of nucleons. In both cases, requiring the axion hilltop inflation results in the strong CP phase that is close to zero.

Filtered asymmetric dark matter during the Peccei-Quinn phase transition

In this paper, we propose a bubble filtering-out mechanism for an asymmetric dark matter scenario during the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) phase transition. Based on a QCD axion model, extended by extra chiral neutrinos, we show that the PQ phase transition can be first order in the parameter space of the model and regarding the PQ symmetry breaking scale, the mechanism can generate PeV-scale heavy neutrinos as a dark matter candidate. Considering a CP-violating source, during the phase transition, discriminating between the neutrino and antineutrino number density, we find the observed dark matter relic abundance, such that the setup can be applied to the first order phase transition with different strengths. We then calculate effective couplings of the QCD axion addressing the strong CP problem within the model. We also study the energy density spectrum of gravitational waves generated from the first order phase transition and show that the signals can be detected by future ground-based detectors such as Einstein Telescope. In particular, for a visible heavy axion case of the model, it is shown that gravitational waves can be probed by DECIGO and BBO interferometers. Furthermore, we discuss the dark matter-standard model neutrino annihilation process as a source for the creation of PeV-scale neutrinos.

Stellar disruption of axion miniclusters in the Milky Way

Axion miniclusters are dense bound structures of dark matter axions that are predicted to form in the post-inflationary Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scenario. Although dense, miniclusters can easily be perturbed or even become unbound by interactions with baryonic objects such as stars. Here, we characterize the spatial distribution and properties of miniclusters in the Milky Way (MW) today after undergoing these stellar interactions throughout their lifetime. We do this by performing a suite of Monte Carlo simulations which track the miniclusters' structure and, in particular, accounts for partial disruption and mass loss through successive interactions. We consider two density profiles - Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) and Power-law (PL) - for the individual miniclusters in order to bracket the uncertainties on the minicluster population today due to their uncertain formation history. For our fiducial analysis at the Solar position, we find a survival probability of 99% for miniclusters with PL profiles and 46% for those with NFW profiles. Our work extends previous estimates of this local survival probability to the entire MW. We find that towards the Galactic center, the survival probabilities drop drastically. Although we present results for a particular initial halo mass function, our simulations can be easily recast to different models using the provided data and code. Finally, we comment on the impact of our results on lensing, direct, and indirect detection.

PeV gravitino, weak-scale Higgsino, and GeV axino in the Kachru-Kalosh-Linde-Trivedi setup

We realize high scale supersymmetry in the mirage mediation. The Higgs sector is extended with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, and the higgsino mass term is generated by the Kim-Nilles mechanism. In particular, the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scale naturally lies on the mirage messenger scale due to the mixed modulus-anomaly mediation with the gauge coupling unification. Consequently, the higgsino mass term is of order the weak scale while the gravitino mass is of PeV order. This hierarchy naturally leads to the correct electroweak symmetry breaking. The higgsinos are thus in the range accessible at future lepton colliders, while other sparticles are well-above the current LHC reach and consistent with the observed Higgs boson. The axino is dominantly produced from the modulus decay and accounts for the correct dark matter abundance.

Proton decay in product group unification

Product group unification is an attractive alternative to simple grand unification. It solves the infamous doublet-triplet splitting problem and the dimension-5 proton decay problems without introducing any fine-tuning. Furthermore, the matter multiplets are still embedded into unified SU(5) representations. In this paper, we discuss proton decay of the simplest product group unification model based on SU(5)XU(2)_H . We find that the minimal setup of the model has already been excluded by dimension-6 proton decay. We also show that a simple extension of the model, with naturally generated SU(5) incomplete multiplets, can rectify this problem. We find that the proton lifetime will be in reach of coming experiments like DUNE and Hyper-K, when the mass of the incomplete multiplet is associated with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking. In this case, the dark matter may be an admixture of the Wino LSP and the axion.

Gravitational waves from fundamental axion dynamics

A totally asymptotically free QCD axion model, where all couplings flow to zero in the infinite energy limit, was recently formulated. A very interesting feature of this fundamental theory is the ability to predict some low-energy observables, like the masses of the extra fermions and scalars. Here we find and investigate a region of the parameter space where the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is broken quantum mechanically through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. This results in an even more predictive framework: the axion sector features only two independent parameters (the PQ symmetry breaking scale and the QCD gauge coupling). In particular, we show that the PQ phase transition is strongly first order and can produce gravitational waves within the reach of future detectors. The predictivity of the model leads to a rigid dependence of the phase transition (like its duration and the nucleation temperature) and the gravitational wave spectrum on the PQ symmetry breaking scale and the QCD gauge coupling.

Primordial black holes from QCD axion bubbles

We propose a scenario in which a strong Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking in the early universe results in large inhomogeneities of the initial QCD axion field value, leading to the formation of very dense axion bubbles. Some of the axion bubbles subsequently collapse into primordial black holes (PBHs). The spatially homogeneous part of the QCD axion explains dark matter of the universe, while the PBHs arising from the axion bubbles can explain the LIGO events or the seed of supermassive black holes. Interestingly, the mass of PBH is determined by the axion decay constant; for fa = 1017 (1016) GeV, the PBH mass is heavier than about 10 (104) M⊙. In addition, axion miniclusters are also formed from the axion bubbles more abundantly than PBHs, and their masses are expected to be heavier than in the usual scenario based on the spontaneous breaking of the PQ symmetry after inflation.

A connection between flavour anomaly, neutrino mass, and axion

We propose a minimal model in which the flavour anomaly in the b → sμ+μ− transition is connected to the breaking of Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry. The flavour anomaly is explained from new physics contribution by introducing one generation of heavy quark and heavy lepton which are vector-like under the standard model (SM) gauge group but charged under a local U(1)X group. They mix with the SM quarks and leptons, inducing flavour-changing Z′ couplings, which generates the b → sμ+μ− anomaly at tree level. On the other hand the new fermions are chiral under the global Peccei-Quinn(PQ) symmetry. The pseudo-Goldstone boson coming from the spontaneous breaking of the PQ symmetry becomes an axion, solving the strong CP problem and providing a cold dark matter candidate. The same symmetry prevents the right-handed neutrino from having a Majorana mass term. But the introduction of a neutrino-specific Higgs doublet allows neutrino to have Dirac mass term without fine-tuning problem. The model shows an interplay between axion, neutrino, dark matter, and flavour physics.

Axion kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance from inflation

Axion cold dark matter from standard misalignment typically requires a decay constant fa ≳ 1011 GeV . Kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance easily allow lower values of fa when the radial Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking field takes large initial values. Here, we consider the effects of inflation on kinetic misalignment and parametric resonance. We assume that the initial PQ field value is determined by quantum fluctuations, and is set by the Hubble parameter during inflation, HI, and the PQ field mass. PQ field oscillations begin before or after the completion of reheating after inflation at a temperature TR. We determine the range of fa and the inflationary parameters (HI, TR) consistent with axion dark matter for a quartic potential for the PQ field. We find that 108 GeV < fa < 1011 GeV can consistently produce axion dark matter. A significant portion of the allowed parameter space predicts rare kaon decays, KL → (π0 + missing energy), and/or suppression of structure formation on small scales.
