The impact of restriction measures implementation due to COVID-19 on particulate atmospheric pollution in Greek urban areas

In this work, the variation on the levels of suspended particulates, in Greek urban areas, was examined, for the period of the restrictive measures implementation (period 1: March to May 2020 and period 2: November 2020 to January 2021) due to the pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus. The PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations are measured by the National Air Pollution Monitoring Network of Greece monitored by the Energy/Environment Ministry. In particular, a comparison of the PM10 and PM2.5 concentration levels was made, concerning the above time periods, with the corresponding atmospheric pollution levels during the periods 2001-2009 (period before the Greek economic crisis), 2010-2019 (period during the Greek economic crisis), as well as with the entire time period 2001-2019. The assessment showed a significant reduction in the levels of both PM10 concentrations, which ranged from 8% to 45%, and PM2.5 concentrations, which ranged from 13% to 48%, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the control measures in improving air quality in Greek urban areas. The above findings show that with appropriate emission control strategies, vital improvements in the air environment of urban areas can be achieved.

Real-Time Measurements of Indoor-Outdoor Exchange of Gaseous and Particulate Atmospheric Pollutants in an Urban Area.

Air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks to health, causing millions of deaths and deleterious health effects worldwide, especially in urban areas where citizens are exposed to high ambient levels of pollutants, also influencing indoor air quality (IAQ). Many sources of indoor air are fairly obvious and well known, but the contribution of outside sources to indoor air still leads to significant uncertainties, in particular the influence that environmental variables have on outdoor/indoor pollutant exchange mechanisms. This is a critical aspect to consider in IAQ studies. In this respect, an experimental study was performed at a public site such as a university classroom during a non-academic period in Madrid city. This includes two field campaigns, in summer (2021) and winter (2020), where instruments for measuring gases and particle air pollutants simultaneously measured outdoor and indoor real-time concentrations. This study aimed to investigate the dynamic variations in the indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratios in terms of ambient outdoor conditions (meteorology, turbulence and air quality) and indoor features (human presence or natural ventilation). The results show that the I/O ratio is pollutant-dependent. In this sense, the infiltration capacity is higher for gaseous compounds, and in the case of particles, it depends on the particle size, with a higher infiltration capacity for smaller particles (<PM2.5). Additionally, under specific situations of high atmospheric stability, the concentrations of gases derived from traffic tend to accumulate in the room, keeping the background concentrations. These concentrations decreased when room ventilation was produced simultaneously with well-ventilated (high wind speed) external conditions. This suggests that the meteorology and turbulence parameters played a key role in influencing indoor ambient pollution conditions by enhancing the dispersion or accumulation of pollutants. The obtained results highlight the high number of variables involved in the outdoor/indoor exchange of air pollutants and, consequently, how complex its study is. Thus, the knowledge of these factors is critical for understanding the behavior of indoor pollutants and controlling human exposure in indoor environments.

Diesel Exhaust Particles Impair Therapeutic Effect of Human Wharton's Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells against Experimental Colitis through ROS/ERK/cFos Signaling Pathway.

Background and ObjectivesEpidemiological investigations have shown positive correlations between increased diesel exhaust particles (DEP) in ambient air and adverse health outcomes. DEP are the major constituent of particulate atmospheric pollution and have been shown to induce proinflammatory responses both in the lung and systemically. Here, we report the effects of DEP exposure on the properties of human Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs), including stemness, regeneration, and immunomodulation.Methods and ResultsNon-apoptotic concentrations of DEP (10 μg/ml) inhibited the migration and osteogenic differentiation capacity of WJ-MSCs. Gene expression profiling showed that DEP increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and expression of pro-inflammatory and metabolic-process-related genes including cFos. Furthermore, WJ-MSCs cultured with DEP showed impaired suppression of T cell proliferation that was reversed by inhibition of ROS or knockdown of cFos. ERK inhibition assay revealed that DEP-induced ROS regulated cFos through activation of ERK but not NF-κB signaling. Overall, low concentrations of DEP (10 μg/ml) significantly suppressed the stemness and immunomodulatory properties of WJ-MSCs through ROS/ERK/cFos signaling pathways. Furthermore, WJ-MSCs cultured with DEP impaired the therapeutic effect of WJ-MSCs in experimental colitis mice, but was partly reversed by inhibition of ROS.ConclusionsTaken together, these results indicate that exposure to DEP enhances the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and immune responses through a mechanism involving the ROS/ERK/cFos pathway in WJ-MSCs, and that DEP-induced ROS damage impairs the therapeutic effect of WJ-MSCs in colitis. Our results suggest that modulation of ROS/ERK/cFos signaling pathways in WJ-MSCs might be a novel therapeutic strategy for DEP-induced diseases.

The Comparison Of Partial Least Squares Regression, Principal Component Regression And Ridge Regression With Multiple Linear Regression For Predicting Pm10 Concentration Level Based On Meteorological Parameters

Air pollution shows itself as a serious problem in big cities in Turkey, especially for winter seasons. Particulate atmospheric pollution in urban areas is considered to have significant impact on human health. Therefore, the ability to make accurate predictions of particulate ambient concentrations is important to improve public awareness and air quality management. Ambient PM10 (i.e particulate diameter less than 10um in size) pollution has negative impacts on human health and it is influenced by meteorological conditions. In this study, partial least squares regression, principal component regression, ridge regression and multiple linear regression methods are compared in modeling and predicting daily mean PM10 concentrations on the base of various meteorological parameters obtained for the city of Ankara, in Turkey. The analysed period is February 2007. The results show that while multiple linear regression and ridge regression yield somewhat better results for fitting to this dataset, principal component regression and partial least squares regression are better than both of them in terms of prediction of PM10 values for future datasets. In addition, partial least squares regression is the remarkable method in terms of predictive ability as it has a close performance with principal component regression even with less number of factors.

Comprehensive and high-resolution emission inventory of atmospheric pollutants for the northernmost cities agglomeration of Harbin-Changchun, China: Implications for local atmospheric environment management

Using a bottom-up estimation method, a comprehensive, high-resolution emission inventory of gaseous and particulate atmospheric pollutants for multiple anthropogenic sectors with typical local sources has been developed for the Harbin-Changchun city agglomeration (HCA). The annual emissions for CO, NOx, SO2, NH3, VOCS, PM2.5, PM10, BC and OC during 2017 in the HCA were estimated to be 5.82 Tg, 0.70 Tg, 0.34 Tg, 0.75 Tg, 0.81Tg, 0.67 Tg, 1.59 Tg, 0.12 Tg and 0.26 Tg, respectively. For PM10 and SO2, the emissions from industry processes were the dominant contributors representing 54.7% and 49.5%, respectively, of the total emissions, while 95.3% and 44.5% of the total NH3 and NOx emissions, respectively, were from or associated with agricultural activities and transportation. Spatiotemporal distributions showed that most emissions (except NH3) occurred in November to March and were concentrated in the central cities of Changchun and Harbin and the surrounding cities. Open burning of straw made an important contribution to PM2.5 in the central regions of the northeastern plain during autumn and spring, while domestic coal combustion for heating purposes was significant with respect to SO2 and PM2.5 emissions during autumn and winter. Furthermore, based on Principal Component Analysis and Multivariable Linear Regression model, air temperature, relative humidity, electricity and energy consumption, and the urban and rural population were optimized to be representative indicators for rapidly assessing the magnitude of regional atmospheric pollutants in the HCA. Such indicators and equations were demonstrated to be useful for local atmospheric environment management.

A review on the direct effect of particulate atmospheric pollution on materials and its mitigation for sustainable cities and societies.

Particulate matter (PM) has gained significant attention due to the increasing concerns related to their effects on human health. Although several reviews have shed light on the effect of PM on human health, their critical adverse effect on material's structure and sustainability was almost neglected. The current study is an attempt to fill this gap related to PM impact on structural materials under the overall consideration of sustainability. More specifically, this review highlights the existing knowledge by providing an overview on PM classification, composition, and sources in different locations around the world. Then, it focuses on PM soiling of surfaces such as solar panels due to an increasing need to mitigate the impact of soiling on reducing photovoltaic (PV) power output and financial competitiveness in dusty regions. This topic is of critical importance for sustainable deployment of solar energy in arid and desert areas around the world to help in reducing their impact on overall climate change and life quality. In addition, this review summarizes climate change phenomena driven by the increase of PM concentration in air such as radiative forcing and acid rain deposition due to their impact on human health, visibility and biodiversity. To this end, this work highlights the role of process management, choice of fuel, the implementation of clean technologies and urban vegetation as some possible sustainable mitigation policies to control PM pollution in cities and urban regions. This research is designed to conduct a comprehensive narrative literature review which targets broad spectrum of readers and new researchers in the field. Moreover, it provides a critical analysis highlighting the need to fill main research gaps in this domain. The findings of this review paper show that PM pollution imposes severe adverse impacts on materials, structures and climate which directly affect the sustainability of urban cities. The advantages of this review include the value of the extensive works that elaborate on the negative impacts of PM atmospheric pollution towards high level of public awareness, management flexibility, stakeholder's involvements, and collaboration between academy, research, and industry to mitigate PM impact on materials and human welfare.

Chemical characterization of fine and ultrafine PM, direct and indirect genotoxicity of PM and their organic extracts on pulmonary cells

Particulate matter in ambient air constitutes a complex mixture of fine and ultrafine particles composed of various chemical compounds including metals, ions, and organics. A multidisciplinary approach was developed by studying physico-chemical characteristics and mechanisms involved in the toxicity of particulate atmospheric pollution. PM0.3–2.5 and PM2.5 including ultrafine particles were sampled in Dunkerque, a French industrialized seaside city. PM samples were characterized from a chemical and toxicological point of view. Physico-chemical characterization evidenced that PM2.5 comes from several sources: natural ones, such as soil resuspension and marine sea-salt emissions, as well as anthropogenic ones, such as shipping traffic, road traffic, and industrial activities. Human BEAS-2B lung cells were exposed to PM0.3–2.5, or to the Extractable Organic Matter (EOM) of PM0.3–2.5 and PM2.5. These exposures induced several mechanisms of action implied in the genotoxicity, such as oxidative DNA adducts and DNA Damage Response. The toxicity of PM-EOM was higher for the sample including the ultrafine fraction (PM2.5) containing also higher concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These results evidenced the major role of organic compounds in the toxicity of PM.

Technique for Determination of Particulate Matter Pollution in the Atmosphere Using Waveguide Slot Linear Array Antennas: A Feasibility Study

Particulate atmospheric pollution alters the dielectric coefficient of the atmosphere. In principle, this could allow pollution to be measured via its effects on the performance of an antenna. In this letter, a novel technique for measuring these effects, based on the use of an optimized air-filled waveguide-fed slot linear array, is shown.

Deposition of particles on gypsum-rich coatings of historic buildings in urban and rural environments

Deposition of gaseous and particulate atmospheric pollutants causes decay of historic mortars to give gypsum-rich coatings by sulphation of lime mortars and blackening of gypsum mortar, resulting in gypsum coatings. Particulate pollution emitted by industrial sources and vehicular traffic is responsible for the deterioration. XRF and SEM analyses of these coatings and their comparison with both the composition of dust coatings formed by the deposition of gaseous and particulate matter in an urban and a rural locality allows assessing which pollution sources are the most damaging for these materials, knowing the elemental composition of these emissions.

Effects of urban particulate deposition on microbial communities living in bryophytes: An experimental study

Our previous in situ study showed that bryophyte–microorganism complexes were affected by particulate atmospheric pollution. Here, the effect of urban particulate wet deposits on microbial communities living in bryophytes was studied under controlled conditions. An urban particulate solution was prepared with particles extracted from analyzer' filters and nebulized on bryophytes in treatments differing in frequency and quantity. The bryophytes did not accumulate metallic trace elements, which were present in very weak concentrations. However , in treated microcosms the total microbial biomass and the biomasses of cyanobacteria, active testate amoebae and fungi significantly decreased in response to the deposition of particles. These results confirm that microbial communities living in terrestrial bryophytes could be more sensitive indicators of atmospheric pollution than bryophytes. Moreover, they suggest that unicellular predators – such as testate amoebae – could be especially useful microbial indicators, since they seem to be both directly and indirectly affected by pollution.

A Valuation of the Influence of Particulate Atmospheric Aerosol in Constructions of the Cultural and Architecture Patrimony of the Urban Area of Castellon (NE, Spain)

The constructions of Cultural and Architecture Patrimony are influenced by pollutants. Many of degenerative processes in the materials which constitute them have their origin in pollutants. That is the reason why a physical–chemical characterisation of the particulate pollutants in the air has been carried out. The deposition and, as a consequence of that, the interaction of the pollutants with the different materials of the monuments depend on the reactivity of the chemical elements that form the atmospheric particulate. Studies of both, bulk dust deposition and total suspended matter, a mineralogical and chemical characterisation of them have been made. Lastly, starting from these data, it can be established that the interactions and degenerative processes are taking place in the monuments of the studied locations. In the present work, the methodology carried out in the study of the particulate atmospheric pollutants, which are capable of accumulating on monuments and buildings with artistic and historical interest in the area of Castellon, is displayed. By means of a network of captors, important samples of sedimentary and suspension atmospheric pollutants, total suspension particles (TSP) were obtained. Firstly, by gravimetric methods, we have obtained the concentration levels of these kinds of pollutants in milligrams per day in busk dust samples and micrograms per cubic meter in TSP. Due to the fact that the corrosivity of these pollutants fundamentally depends on their compositions, the study has been completed with a mineralogical and chemical characterisation. By X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, we have analysed the particles of the two kinds of samples. The chemical analysis was carried out by inductively coupled plasma-atomic spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (multielement analysis techniques) in TSP samples and in the soluble fraction of the depositing particulate matter. The results have shown as main compounds: clay minerals, calcite, and carbonaceous matter coming from non-perfect combustion of vehicles. The chemical analysis indicates a high Ca/S ratio and high levels of concentration in chemical elements associated to this representative industrial cluster of ceramics industry in Europe.

EGF mediates calcium-activated chloride channel activation in the human bronchial epithelial cell line 16HBE14o−: involvement of tyrosine kinase p60c-src

Particulate atmospheric pollutants interact with the human airway epithelium, which releases cytokines, chemokines, and EGF receptor (EGFR) ligands leading to proinflammatory responses. There is little information concerning the short-term effects of EGFR activation by extracellular ligands on ionic regulation of airway surface lining fluids. We identified in the membrane of human epithelial bronchial cells (16HBE14o(-) line) an endogenous calcium- and voltage-dependent, outwardly rectifying small-conductance chloride channel (CACC), and we examined the effects of EGF on CACC activity. Ion channel currents were recorded with the patch-clamp technique. In cell-attached membrane patches, CACC were activated by exposure of the external surface of the cells to physiological concentrations of EGF without any change in cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) and inhibited by tyrphostin AG-1478 (an inhibitor of EGFR that also blocks EGF-dependent Src family kinase activation). EGF activation of c-Src protein in 16HBE14o(-) cells was observed, and the signaling pathway elicited by EGFR was blocked by tyrphostin AG-1478. In excised inside-out membrane patches CACC were activated by exposure of the cytoplasmic face of the channels to the human recombinant Src(p60(c-src)) kinase with endogenous or exogenous ATP and inhibited by lambda-protein phosphatase. Secretion of EGFR ligands by epithelial airway cells exposed to pollutants would then elicit a rapid and direct ionic response of CACC mediated by EGFR activation via a Src kinase family-dependent signaling pathway.

Characterisation of gaseous and particulate atmospheric pollutants in the East Mediterranean by diffusion denuder sampling lines

A field study aimed to characterize atmospheric pollutants in the gaseous and the particulate phases was conducted during the fall-winter of 2004 and the summer of 2005 in the Ashdod area, Israel. The site is influenced by both anthropogenic sources (power plants, refineries, chemical and metal industries, a cargo port, road traffic) and natural sources (sea-spray and desert dust). The use of diffusion lines--a series of annular diffusion denuders for sampling gaseous compounds followed by a cyclone and a filter pack for determining PM(2.5) composition--allowed a good daily characterization of the main inorganic compounds in both the gaseous (HCl, HNO(3), SO(2), NH(3)) and the particulate phase (Cl(-), NO(3)(-), SO(4)(=), NH(4)(+), and base cations). During the summer campaign two other activities were added: an intensive 3-h sampling period and the determination of PM(2.5) bulk composition. The results were interpreted on the basis of meteorological condition, especially the mixing properties of the lower atmosphere as determined by monitoring the natural radioactivity due to Radon progeny, a good proxy of the atmospheric ability to dilute pollutants. Several pollution episodes were identified and the predominance of different sources was highlighted (sea-spray, desert dust, secondary photochemical pollutants). During the summer period a considerable increase of nitric acid and particulate sulphate was observed. Secondary inorganic pollutants (nitrate, sulphate and ammonium) constituted, on the average, 57% of the fine particle fraction, organic compounds 20%, primary anthropogenic compounds 14%, natural components (sea-spray and crustal elements) 9%. The advantages of the diffusion lines in determining gaseous and particulate N- and S- inorganic compounds are discussed.

IBA methods for characterisation of fine particulate atmospheric pollution: a local, regional and global research problem

The IBA techniques of PIXE, PIGE, RBS and PESA have been used simultaneously to analyse fine particle pollution collected on Teflon filters. This provided a suite of 23 elements from hydrogen to lead which can be used to characterisation and fingerprint pollution sources and estimate their contributions to the total mass loading. These methods have been demonstrated to be applicable for aerosol pollution studies on a local, regional and even globe scale on time frames from a few days to decades.

Neural Network and Multiple Regression Models for PM10 Prediction in Athens: A Comparative Assessment

Particulate atmospheric pollution in urban areas is considered to have significant impact on human health. Therefore, the ability to make accurate predictions of particulate ambient concentrations is important to improve public awareness and air quality management. This study examines the possibility of using neural network methods as tools for daily average particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <10 µm (PM10) concentration forecasting, providing an alternative to statistical models widely used up to this day. Based on a data inventory, in a fixed central site in Athens, Greece, ranging over a two-year period, and using mainly meteorological variables as inputs, neural network models and multiple linear regression models were developed and evaluated. Comparison statistics used indicate that the neural network approach has an edge over regression models, expressed both in terms of prediction error (root mean square error values lower by 8.2–9.4%) and of episodic prediction ability (false alarm rate values lower by 7–13%). The results demonstrate that artificial neural networks (ANNs), if properly trained and formed, can provide adequate solutions to particulate pollution prognostic demands.

Atmospheric Corrosion Initiation by Sulphur Dioxide and Particulate Matter: II. Characterisation and corrosivity of individual particulate atmospheric pollutants

This research has involved investigation of the simulated atmospheric corrosion of zinc, aluminium and especially iron in situations where particulate pollutants initiate attack at various relative humidities, in the presence and absence of sulphur dioxide. Metal surfaces holding small population densities of particulate material. collected at sites near well-defined sources in rural. industrial and marine locations. have been examined directly and after exposure in simple humidity cabinets. or in a specially designed cellfor in situ observation. Additionally. SEM/EDAX examination has assisted in identifiying the nature and corrosivity of the individual particles. The four most aggressive species were salt and salt/sand from marine or de-iced locations. the emitted ash from iron smelters. plume ashfrom municipal incinerators and coal mine dusts. In each case the corrosiveness was associated with the presence of chloride ions and/or sulphur compounds. Other particulate types. such as fly ashes. had more limited corrosivity. Thus. corrosion was promoted in the vicinity of coal ash in the presence of sulphur dioxide. whilst oil fly ash was relatively non-corrosive even in the presence of sulphur dioxide. Considering the much higher inorganic content of coal fly ash, and the greater porosity of oil fly ash. this suggests that the corrosion mechanism depends upon the catalytic promotion of sulphate formation from sulphur dioxide by inorganic species, such as Fe2+ and Mn2+ ions, which then promotes the anodic reaction, and not simply the absorbed presence of sulphur dioxide per see Chalk particles were non-corrosive even in the presence of sulphur dioxide, due perhaps to the removal of sulphur dioxide as insoluble sulphite/sulphate. The desirability of controlling the emission or distribution of particulates from certain plants is indicated.

Carcinogenicity of a composite organic extract of urban particulate atmospheric pollutants following subcutaneous injection in infant mice

Subcutaneous injection of a suspension of a composite organic extract of particulate atmospheric pollutants to perinatal Swiss albino mice, in total doses of 5 to 40 mg, produced carcinogenic effects which were dose related and related to the age of mice at time of injection. Injection within 1 to 7 days after birth resulted in a dose-related increase in the total tumor incidence and in the incidence of solitary pulmonary adenomas in both sexes. Additionally, the pollutant extracts induced multiple pulmonary adenomas, pulmonary adenocarcinomas, and lymphomas in males and females and hepatocellular carcinomas in males.

Plants as bioassay systems for monitoring atmospheric pollutants.

Plant species act as natural bioindicators of atmospheric pollutants. Plants can be used as bioassay systems for monitoring atmospheric pollutants. Plant injury symptoms, altered growth and reproductive pattern, changes in yield and/or productivity, and changes in species distribution can be used singly or in combination as monitoring devices. The results must be accepted as semiquantitative, but within that constraint, air quality can be sufficiently well defined to enable the setting of air quality standards. Genetic variability of higher plant species has yielded cultivars which display a range of tolerance to gaseous and particulate atmospheric pollutants. Asexual propagation of these cultivars provides pollutant-sensitive and pollutant-tolerant plant material which can be grown on selected sites for observation. Gymnosperm and Angiosperm species as well as species of lichens and mosses have been used to establish field monitoring networks in Europe, Canada, and the United States. White pine, shade tobacco, mosses, and lichens have proven particularly useful as bioassay tools. Pollen from pollutant-sensitive and pollutant-tolerant plant cultivars has also been used as a sensitive laboratory bioassay tool for studying air quality. Epiphytic mosses are particularly efficient as monitors of particulate pollutants, especially heavy metals, some of which may act as chemical mutagens. The cost, complexity, and lack of reliability of instrumented systems for air quality monitoring make imperative the need to develop successful plant bioassay systems for monitoring air quality.
