Participatory Action Research Strategy: The Role of Culture in the Transformation of Religious Development

This paper aims to explain the effective cultural approach strategies in the development of the Catholic religion in St. Herman Yoseph Riangkemie, Larantuka Diocese. The approach begins with studying the cultural values of the local community and integrating them with Catholic religious values to be applied in the community's life, with the goal of changing the local community's perception of the religion. The research method used in this study is qualitative with a participatory action research approach. The results of religious development using this cultural approach have shown success in increasing the community's awareness to engage in religious activities and enhancing their sense of responsibility in religious development. This approach has significantly helped increase the number of Catholic Church members in the area.

Lessons Learned From Remotely Onboarding Undergraduates Into Applied Energy and Entrepreneurship Research

Understanding what motivates students to enroll, persist, and complete an undergraduate research experience is crucial in developing strategies for creating well-rounded and inclusive research programs. This paper showcases an approach for a virtual undergraduate research onboarding program to orient engineering students to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). A participatory action research strategy, photovoice, was used to identify factors influencing student motivation, satisfaction, and success for a virtual research onboarding program. Although photovoice has been used as an assessment tool in various educational settings, to our knowledge, it has not been used to evaluate virtual undergraduate research onboarding programs to promote retention of historically underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The exploratory findings of this study reinforce best practices for formal face-to-face onboarding programs, offer new insights for informal virtual programs, and provide an approach to program assessment with recommendations for developing impactful onboarding experiences for student enrollment, persistence, and completion.

"ABK SMILE' Pocketbook as a Dental Media Educational Media for Accompanying Children with Special Needs at SLB Widya Bhakti Semarang

Abstract: Children with Special Needs (ABK) need to get more attention related to dental and oral health because ABK has a higher prevalence of problems in the oral cavity than normal children. The oral and dental health of children with special needs depends on their parents or companions because they play the role of the closest person who educates, trains, and gives love to the child. ABK assistants must have the skills and knowledge to teach ABK about the importance of maintaining healthy teeth and mouth, one of which is by giving pocketbooks. Method: The method used uses the Participatory Action Research (PAR) strategy by empowering the community. The pocketbook is given free of charge to the ABK companion and a follow-up is carried out for 3 months. Result: Service activities carried out at SLB Widya Bhakti Semarang for 3 months consisting of preparation, implementation and evaluation stages. There was a change in oral hygiene which was initially categorized as good. This pocket book is effective in providing education because it is interesting and easy to learn for children. Conclusion : This pocketbook "ABK Smile" can help improve education for children with special needs.
 

Development of Integrated Marketing Communication Model for Health Tourism Entrepreneurs to Accommodate Elderly Tourists in the World Heritage City for Elderly Tourists (Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District)

The goals of this article are to 1) examine the integrated marketing communication situation of health tourism entrepreneurs to accommodate elderly tourists in the World Heritage City for elderly tourists (Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District); 2) examine the integrated marketing communication of medical tourism entrepreneurs to accommodate elderly tourists in the World Heritage City for elderly tourists (Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District); and 3) examine health tourism entrepreneurs to accommodate elder tourists (Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District). The research design is mixed-methods research with participatory action research (PAR). In-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and policy meetings are all used in the qualitative research model, and employ the Snowball Sampling method of random sampling by referring people and experts, analyzing the data using content analysis, and composing a descriptive narrative. 400 senior tourists were sampled using the purposive selection method for the quantitative research method. Then, descriptive statistics and the Structural Equation Model (SEM) were used to analyze the data. The study's findings indicate that the "SILVER D Model," which consists of the seven strategies under the models S-Standard, I-Integrated, L-Lifestyle, V-Value Proposition, E-Entrepreneurial, R-Responsibility, and D-Digital Marketing, is the integrated marketing communication model employed by health tourism entrepreneurs to accommodate elderly tourists in the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, a World Heritage Site. 3. The "SILVER D Model," a participatory action research (PAR) framework and strategies falling under the aforementioned 7 strategies The information gained from this study can be used to create an integrated marketing communication strategy for health tourism business owners to assist senior tourists in the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, a World Heritage City for elderly tourists, for the benefit of the stakeholders involved in both economics and policy.

태권도 국가대표 선수들의 경기력 요인에 대한 탐색적 접근

The purpose of this study was to explore the performance factors of national taekwondo players and to present improvement and support measures for the factors. Research participants were seven female national team athletes participating in the 2022 World Taekwondo Championships, we used photovocie, participatory action research strategy. The process of photo-voice was categorized in the order of factors of the national Taekwondo players were categorized into internal and external factors. Sub-topics of the inner factors were ‘mirror that shines on me’, ‘fight against weight’, ‘time alone’, and ‘routine that protects me’, and the outer factors were categorized into ‘my own endorphins’, ‘fatal encounters’, and ‘growth in pain’. Based on the results of this study, we discussed on inherent performance factors and offered some suggestions for future improvement and support.

Addressing stigma among persons living with HIV through the Sujaag project in Pakistan: A socioecological analysis

AbstractHIV‐related stigma causes multifaceted problems for people with lived experiences. Stigma leads to feelings of shame and disgrace, and marginalizes persons living with HIV and their caregivers by marring social relationships and impacting health outcomes. In April 2019 Ratodero Tehsil in Larkana District, Pakistan, had an HIV outbreak, where evidence highlighted increase in infection rates among non‐high‐risk populations, including children. In the aftermath of this outbreak, affected families faced loss of communal ties in part due to stigmatizing attitudes. The Sujaag Project employed Participatory Action Research strategies to address HIV‐based stigma and enhance acceptance of people living with HIV in the region. By utilizing a qualitative methodology, this study reports manifestations in changes in HIV stigma at four layers of the Socioecological Model: Individual, Interpersonal, Community and Social, and Macro levels. Findings from focus group discussions and reflective narrative reports gathered at varied points of the project cycle create an understanding of how HIV‐related stigma affects wellbeing and how a collaborative and participatory approach aids in re‐establishment of social relationships. This study informs contextual methodologies for incorporating lived experiences of HIV in program design, service delivery, and policy influence, and can be adapted for other stigmatized illnesses in similar contexts.

Aging in the Right Place? Photovoice With Older Adults Residing in Shelters During COVID-19

Aging in the right place (AIRP) involves supporting older adults to live as long as possible in their homes and communities, recognizing that where an older person lives impacts their ability to age optimally and must match their unique lifestyles and vulnerabilities. Photovoice, a participatory action research strategy, allows people to document their experiences through photography, promoting critical dialogue about issues such as AIRP and rights-based housing. This presentation highlights the concept of AIRP from the perspectives of a diverse group of older adults living in promising practices shelters in Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary, Canada using photovoice. Findings indicate that the process promoted a sense of empowerment among participants. Insights about older adults’ perceptions of AIRP residing in shelters to best meet their intersectional identities, housing, and support needs will be shared. Findings inform policy initiatives that promote AIRP and the right to adequate housing for older adults experiencing homelessness.

A Transitional Year Residency Program Provides Innovative Solutions for Unmatched Medical Students.

The transition to residency is competitive with more medical students applying for residency positions than slots available, and some will face challenges securing a position in their desired specialty. Our institution created a transitional year (TY) residency program in 2016 to help meet the needs of our medical students who did not initially secure a position in the main residency Match. This report provides a brief overview of the TY program and analysis of the program's value from the inaugural 3 years (2017-2020). The TY program is based at a midsized, urban, academic health center and features a tailorable curriculum emphasizing preparation for residents' specialty career plans. We used participatory action research and appreciative inquiry strategies as part of the annual program evaluation to examine TY residents' perceptions of the program's value. Stakeholder perceptions were also elicited from a purposive selection of 4 program directors and 2 key medical school education leaders. Internal evaluations revealed a high rate of resident satisfaction with the TY program and self-reported benefits such as increased confidence, clinical proficiency, and professional enculturation. Stakeholders valued the program as a potential pipeline for increasing physicians in the state and providing valuable direction to students' career trajectories. Creating a TY residency program to meet the needs of unmatched medical students was feasible to implement, acceptable to residents in meeting their academic and career needs, and provided a sustainable institutional solution with benefits to multiple stakeholders.

Organisational capacities for the strengthening of social innovation: case study in the Renacer Verde Association

The purpose of this research is to diagnose the organisational capacities for the strengthening of social innovation in the Renacer Verde Association, Serrania de las Quinchas Natural Park. The methodology used is based on a unique case study with a participatory action research strategy that interacts with and involves the sample as a transforming actor of its reality. The results show a low level of development of the strategic, operational and infrastructure capacities of knowledge management due to low investment in functional, productive and technological aspects, which prevents a proposal of sustainable value. It can be concluded that organisational capacities represent the possibilities of the optimisation and management of the resources that a company possesses, with differentiating factors originating in the processes of social innovation, related to collaborative action for the solution of social problems and oriented to the generation of value from the recognition of the environment and use of the population's potential.

Towards sustainable informal settlements: a toolkit for community-led upgrading in Durban

Across sub-Saharan Africa, 238 million people live in slums or informal settlements. Because of rapid urbanisation and population growth, informal settlements have become a major challenge in the urban landscape, exacerbating issues related to poverty, inadequate infrastructure, housing and poor living conditions. As part of a collaborative interdisciplinary project ISULABANTU, this paper provides an overview of toolkits focused on informal settlement upgrading (ISU) in South Africa and presents the process of an integrated toolkit development for sustainable human settlements in Durban, which was informed by participatory action research and co-production strategies. A toolkit can be a valuable and effective way of engaging communities in the process of ISU and for community members to take full ownership of the process, designing strategies that best respond to their needs. The review of existing toolkits has revealed several critical gaps related to community-led practices, integrated approaches to housing and environmental management, and gender. The integrated ISULABANTU toolkit aims to fill these gaps and complement the existing resources. It provides a framework for action research, active involvement of and partnership building with local communities in upgrading practices required to achieve sustainable human settlements.

A systematic review of photovoice as participatory action research strategies

Photovoice research is conducted by researchers to communicate images or photographs, and it has high confidence in analyzing the value, story or meaning of an image. Several previous studies that examined photovoice as a research strategy were analyzed and reviewed. This systematic review used an article selection process. It was defining the purpose, conducting a literature search, pulling articles by reading abstracts, reading the full paper, data abstraction, and conducting an analysis. The photovoice article selection was classified into education, health, and social science domain. Finally, forty-one articles have been reviewed with the total of participants involved ranged from five to fifty individuals. The majority of research method in the articles was participatory action research (PAR) through qualitative inquiry or field visits. Meanwhile, the research instruments used photography, documentation, observation, and interviews. In various fields of research, photovoice is able to increase the understanding of individuals or groups to interpret the content of an image or photo.

Optimizing a stroke caregiver support programme in practice with Participatory Action Research

Abstract Family caregivers (FCG) play a key role in the day-to-day care of stroke survivors. Most FCG support programmes are complex public health interventions. Often, they are designed top-down without key stakeholder participation. Hence, when implementing these programmes in real world settings, they may experience “teething problems”. Optimization in practice and actively engaging its stakeholders to accurately fit the programme to the needs in practice may enhance the programmés chance of success. The Participatory Action Research (PAR) strategy was chosen for the optimization of a German primary prevention programme for stroke FCGs. Immediately after the development of the preliminary support concept (5 Conceptual Building Blocks - CBB), conducted top-down by the academic research team, iterative PAR-cycles (observe - reflect - plan - act) were applied. Together with the stakeholders (service providers and FCG), three steps were taken: (1) verifying and fitting the preliminary CBBs, (2) detecting, developing, verifying and fitting new blocks, and (3) prioritizing all blocks. For data collection a multi-methodological design was chosen. Through PAR, a matured FCG support concept was obtained, containing eight CBBs. The five preliminary CBBs: ‘Content’, ‘Human resources’, ‘Personalized approach’, ‘Timing’, and ‘Setting’, were optimized and prioritized as core blocks, providing the base for individual caregiver support. Three new CBBs: ‘Network building’, ‘Communication’, and ‘Social safety-net’ were assigned as facilitating blocks, interlinking and securing the programme within the existing support system. PAR was found to be essential for both systematically detecting conceptual weaknesses of the preliminary concept and adjusting its components to the needs of the key stakeholders, before full-scale implementation. Involvement of stakeholders, with high levels of participation, will enhance the acceptance of the matured concept and its feasibility in practice.

BUILDING SAFE ROUTES TO AGE IN PLACE THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES

Participation in active transportation by older persons has been associated with higher quality of life and longevity. Efforts across the United States to increase active transportation (walking, biking and fixed route transportation) by older adults have lacked meaningful input by older adults, are non-theoretical and have had inconclusive results. This paper describes the findings from Phase 1 of the Safe Routes to Age in Place project, a collaboration between Age-Friendly Franklin County, The Ohio State University (OSU) and the University of Texas-Arlington (UT-A), funded by the Ohio Department of Transportation. The aim of the study is to increase the options and safe utilization of active transportation by older persons in three pilot neighborhoods in Franklin County, Ohio utilizing community-based participatory action research strategies with a customized data collection app, MyAmble. The purpose of Phase 1 was to engage city and regional planning students, government officials and older adults to identify “hot spots” in the three pilot neighborhoods. Heat mapping of community data including locations of densely-populated vulnerable older adults, fixed transportation routes, bus stop signage and benches, shared bike stations, bike routes, paratransit routes and pedestrian crash data was completed. Maps were used to identify areas of focus and discussions with municipal leaders and older adult residents further refined target areas to be used in the second phase of the study. Older residents completed walk audits using the MyAmble app and identified issues with sidewalks, crosswalk timers and bus stops. Implications related to age-friendly communities and active transportation are offered.

Epistemological Belief of Physics Students in Finishing Thesis: The Preparation of Being Participatory Action Research

Indonesia is a unique country in higher education, undergraduate students are required to complete their final project in the research form that called a thesis. Various problems recognized by the students become their own experience in practicing research and writing. The aim of the study is a description of the students’ ability, especially physics students about the epistemological belief of physics students in finishing the thesis. This study used a qualitative-quantitative combination research design (mixed method) with exploratory research design techniques. This research using Participatory Action Research (PAR) strategy was involving by Physics Education students at Surabaya State University. The result of this study shows that the physics students have good epistemological belief in finishing the thesis. Most of the participatory action researches are more interested in the physics learning media field.

A university's response to people with disabilities in Worcester, Western Cape.

BackgroundThe call for institutions of higher education to foster interaction with communities and ensure training is responsive to the needs of communities is well documented. In 2011, Stellenbosch University collaborated with the Worcester community to identify the needs of people with disabilities within the community. How the university was engaging with these identified needs through student training still needed to be determined.ObjectivesThis study describes the engagement process of reciprocity and responsivity in aligning needs identified by persons with disability to four undergraduate allied health student training programmes in Worcester, Western Cape.MethodA single case study using the participatory action research appraisal methods explored how undergraduate student service learning was responding to 21 needs previously identified in 2011 alongside persons with disability allowing for comprehensive feedback and a collaborative and coordinated response.ResultsStudents’ service learning activities addressed 14 of the 21 needs. Further collaborative dialogue resulted in re-grouping the needs into six themes accompanied by a planned collaborative response by both community and student learning to address all 21 needs previously identified.ConclusionUndergraduate students’ service learning in communities has the potential to meet community identified needs especially when participatory action research strategies are implemented. Reciprocity exists when university and community co-engage to construct, reflect and adjust responsive service learning. This has the potential to create a collaborative environment and process in which trust, accountability, inclusion and communication is possible between the university and the community.

Evaluating the helpfulness of a co-construction approach to career learning and development programme design

My research explored the helpfulness of co-constructing a career learning and development (CLD) programme with and for adults with mental health challenges. Following a literature review, I adopted a participatory action research strategy, aiming to position a client of the charity where my research was based as a partner in programme design. Emerging themes from semi-structured interviews offered insights into client requirements and concerns, enabling draft programme creation and refinement. In this context, co-construction facilitated delivery of a client-focused, theory-based CLD programme, offering a valuable practitioner learning opportunity, and a vehicle to challenge power relations and pursue emancipatory practice.

Construcción de un sistema participativo de garantía con y para la ARAC (Asociación Red Agroecológica Campesina) en el municipio de Subachoque, Cundinamarca, en 2015.

Introducción. Una de las principales necesidades manifiestas de la ARAC en 2014, era el mejoramiento y ampliación de sus canales de comercialización, así como la falta de confianza y verificación de sus procesos productivos para ser coherentes con su misión en producción agroecológica. Objetivo. En este contexto, la presente investigación tuvo como objetivo la creación de un Sistema Participativo de Garantía (SPG) con y para la organización ARAC. Metodología. Se desarrolló una Investigación Acción Participativa (IAP) durante el año 2015. El proceso incluyó a todos los productores, aunque no contó con los consumidores por la dificultad de coordinar sus tiempos. Las cuatro fases de la investigación incluyeron: diagnóstico, estructuración del SPG de la ARAC, visitas de certificación y Escuelas Agroecológicas de Campo (EAC). Resultados. Como resultados se creó el SPG-ARAC con un comité vinculado a la estructura orgánica de la asociación y un reglamento que reúne normas y procedimientos a seguir en la implementación de los procesos productivos, así como mecanismos de control y verificación inspirados en los principios agroecológicos de la ARAC y en la Resolución 187 de 2006 del Ministerio de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural (MADR). Se realizaron visitas de certificación a 22 sistemas de producción agropecuaria o de procesamiento y cuatro EAC. Conclusión. La implementación del SPG-ARAC demuestra que fue posible desarrollar un SPG con y para la ARAC, y que la organización se encuentra cerca de completar la transición agroecológica en los subsistemas de producción agrícola, mientras en los sistemas de producción pecuaria y de transformación se encuentran varias dificultades. Las principales limitantes identificadas gracias al SPG, para lograr la transición agroecológica de la organización son: la consecución de semillas y pie de cría ecológicos, el abastecimiento continuo de agua, la producción de pastos y forrajes ecológicos para la alimentación animal, y el uso de medicina alopática.

 Group administrators Learning Pendas’s students is an important part of the system for implementing distance learning services in each Open University Distance Learning Program Unit. However, the description and research related to the role of the board of education officers is still very limited. To achieve this, descriptive qualitative research has been carried out with participatory action research (PAR) strategies for all PGSD and PG-PAUD student management and service activities carried out by pokar administrators throughout the Banten region under the auspices of UPBJJ-UT Serang. The results of the study showed that the administrators of the pendas program had a role in the implementation of distance learning system services at UT Serang UPBJJ especially in promotional activities, new student recruitment, New Student Study Orientation, distribution of teaching materials, PKP / PKM tutorials and compulsory and examination and Diploma Submission Ceremony (UPI).

Mentoring communities of practice: what’s in it for the mentor?

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to address the critique of researchers, who question the effectiveness and sustainability of mentoring as a continuing professional development and learning (CPDL) process. Where a lack of awareness exists surrounding the potential benefits of mentoring for the mentor, this paper investigates whether engaging in and with mentoring through a mentoring community of practice (M-CoP) assists mentors to accrue and realise the benefits of engagement. A relationship will be drawn between the community of practice (CoP) dimensions as outlined by Wenger-Trayner and Wenger-Trayner (2015): domain, practice and community, and the perceived benefits accrued for mentors will be reported.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative approach was taken, using a participatory action learning action research strategy. In total, 12 mentors came together to form a developing M-CoP. They attended four M-CoP workshops where they grew as mentors, through the three dimensions of a CoP: domain, practice and community. Workshops were audio visually recorded and observed. Further data were gathered through an M-CoP questionnaire, pre-workshop questions, M-CoP artefacts, stimulus recall, reflective journals, reflective journey plans and extended focus group discussions. Respondent validation, inter-rater and intra-observer reliability were used. Data were coded manually and using NVivo-10 software.FindingsMany of the benefits reported were directly linked to participants’ engagement in and with the three M-CoP dimensions: domain, practice and community. Such benefits related to mentor identity, support and solidarity, engagement and interaction, sharing “for” and learning “from” other mentors, and knowledge expansion and boundary spanning. Participants reported that engaging in and with mentor education through an M-CoP was an effective CPDL process, which was beneficial for them as developing mentors.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample size was limited, based in one country and focussed upon one subject specialism. Such reported benefits need to be disseminated in order to raise the awareness of policy makers, teacher education institution managers and teacher educators, teachers and school leaders of the benefits of engaging in mentoring CPDL through the process of M-CoP engagement.Practical implicationsThe findings from this study can be used to inform policies related to the continuum of teacher education. A recommendation is made for policy makers, teacher education institution managers, school leaders and CPDL service providers to facilitate the development of M-CoPs and to support their growth. It is also suggested that government departments of education and professional standards bodies account for the resourcing of such work in the design and implementation phase of school placement developments.Originality/valueThis paper closes the following gaps in the literature: CPDL benefits of engaging in and with an M-CoP for the mentor, the relationship between CPDL benefits and CoP dimensions and the development of M-CoPs in the given socio-cultural, historical and economic context of Ireland’s teacher education system and those of similar contexts.
