Four new species of Arrenurus water mites (Acari, Hydrachnidiae, Arrenuridae) from China

ABSTRACT The paper deals with four new species of Arrenurus (Acari, Hydrachnidiae, Arrenuridae) from standing water habitats in China: Arrenurus (Arrenurus) pseudonemani sp. nov., Arrenurus (Arrenurus) circinatus sp. nov., Arrenurus (Arrenurus) menglaensis sp. nov., and Arrenurus (Megaluracarus) guantingensis sp. nov. Arrenurus (Arrenurus) pseudonemani sp. nov. can be distinguished by the petiole membrane enlarged in the middle, making the middle part significantly wider than the front and rear ends. Arrenurus (Arrenurus) circinatus sp. nov. can be distinguished by petiole bearing a circular petiole membrane at the end. Arrenurus (Arrenurus) menglaensis sp. nov. can be distinguished by petiole with a pair of setae and split down the middle, forming a pair of pointed crescents at the ends. Arrenurus (Megaluracarus) guantingensis sp. nov. can be distinguished cauda slightly convex basally, without lateral extensions, P-2 with 15 small medial setae near distoventral corner. Systematic position of Fuscozetes setiger (Acari: Oribatida: Ceratozetidae) in the light of ontogenetic studies

The systematic position of Fuscozetes setiger (Trägårdh, 1910) n. comb. is investigated in the light of ontogenetic studies. This species is classified by most authors as Trichoribates Berlese, 1910, but this classification is not supported by the morphology of juvenile stages of this species. In all juveniles of F. setiger, a humeral organ is present, and all nymphs have a humeral sclerite, which is typical of Fuscozetes Sellnick, 1928. The larva has a pygidial sclerite, with three pairs of setae (dp, lp, h1), the nymphs have a gastronotal sclerite, with 10 pairs of setae (d-, l-, h-series and p1), and setae p2 and p3 are inserted on unsclerotized integument. The nymphs have a large humeral sclerite, bearing seta c1, while setae c2 and c3 are inserted on unsclerotized integument. The adult of F. setiger has thin seta l" on genu and tibia I and II, which is typical of Fuscozetes.

Teneriffia hajiqanbari sp. nov. (Acari: Trombidiformes: Teneriffiidae), first record of the genus from Iran, with a key to world species of Teneriffia

Teneriffia hajiqanbari n. sp. is described based on female, male, and deutonymph specimens collected in mangrove forests in Qeshm Island, in the eastern part of the Persian Gulf, southern Iran. This new species can be distinguished by following characters: gnathosoma without “clasps” ventrally; palpal oncophysis absent; venter with 17–20 pairs of setae; genital plates with seven pairs of setae (female); dorsal body setae minutely barbed; opisthosomal setae d1, e1 and f1 long and reaching or surpassing the base of next seta; solenidotaxy of tarsi I–IV: 3-3-0-1. Additionally, an identification key to known species of Teneriffia is updated.

Larval Development of the Mangrove Fiddler Crab Austruca albimana (Kossmann, 1877) (Crustacea: Brachyura: Ocypodidae) Under Laboratory Conditions.

Larvae of the mangrove fiddler crab Austruca albimana (Kossmann, 1877), hatched from an ovigerous female collected from the mangroves of Sumariat, Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia in the southern Red Sea, were reared in the laboratory. Four zoeal and a megalopal stages were recorded, and their morphological features are described herein for the first time. The setations of the cephalothoracic appendages of the zoeas of A. albimana and their congeners exhibit several variations that help differentiate larvae of this genus easily from other meroplankton. However, a character of phylogenetic significance -minute spines on the forks of the telson of pleon -is common to larvae of this genus. These minute spines were studied with the aid of scanning electron microscope images. There were five common morphological features between A. albimana and other fiddler crab megalope, including Minuca burgersi, Leptuca uruguayensis and Leptuca thayeri. These features were a deflexed front, rounded to obtuse frontal margin, seven-segmented antennal flagellum, unsegmented endopod of maxilla and three cincinnuli on the endopods of pleopods. Two zoeal morphological features described in this study and other studies (i.e., the absence of lateral spines on carapace [vs. their presence in species of Uca, Afruca and Ocypode in the Ocypodinae] and the presence of a maximum of four pairs of inner setae on the telson of pleon [vs. presence of more than four pairs of setae in species of Uca, Afruca and Ocypode]) support the taxonomic amendment of transferring Uca spp. and Afruca spp. crabs from Gelasiminae to Ocypodinae.

First illustrated description of male and redescription of female of the water mite Feltria ishikariensis Imamura, 1954 from running waters of Primorye Territory of Russia is given. Dorsum of male with large shield and two narrow posterior platelets. Dorsal shield bearing four pairs of setae, posterior plates with one glandularia each. Coxal plates in four groups. The genital field with deep posteromedian indentation, 40–50 pairs of acetabula and four pairs fine medial setae. III-Leg-6 with short ventrodistal projection bearing four to five slender setae. Excretory pore in posteroventral position.

Redescription of Panonychus caglei Mellott, 1968, with ontogenetic development (Acari: Tetranychidae).

A redescription of the adult stages of Panonychus caglei Mellott, 1968 (Acari: Tetranychidae), is presented based on new material collected from Japan, and type specimens (holotype and paratypes). Morphological differences in the setation of legs have been reported and measurements of taxonomic characters are added. We also have described the ontogenetic development of the juvenile stages. The ventral idiosomal chaetotaxy in larval stage lacks pregenital and genital setae which are added consecutively through development. The pregenital pair of setae appears in the protonymphs while the first pair of genital setae is firstly observed in the deutonymphal stage.

New species of primitive oribatid mite of the family Haplochthoniidae (Acari, Oribatida) from southeastern Iran

Haplochthoniidae is a small family within the superfamily Cosmochthonioidea and consists of only two genera and 17 species. In this paper a new species, Haplochthonius (Haplochthonius) longiapophysus sp. nov., is described and illustrated based on adult specimens sampled from soil in Sistan and Baluchestan province, southeastern Iran. The new species is characterised by very long prominent rostral apophyses; blade-like prodorsal and notogastral setae; genital plates with six and anal and adanal plates each with four pairs of setae, an1, ad1 and ad2 thicker than other ano-adanal setae; epimeral setation 3-2-2-3; solenidion φ of tibiae I very long, solenidion ω of tarsi I longer than famulus, seta d longer than solenidion on tibiae II and III. The new species is morphologically very similar to Haplochthonius (Haplochthonius) sanctaeluciae Bernini, 1973, however, the most significant differences between them is in the morphology of rostral apophyses and number and size of genital setae. The family Haplochthoniidae is recorded for the first time from Sistan and Baluchestan province. An updated diagnostic key to the adults of known species of Haplochthonius (Haplochthonius) is given.

A new species of Lasioseius (Acari: Blattisociidae) from Brazil with morphological and DNA barcode data.

Lasioseius foliatisetus n. sp. is described based on the morphology and molecular markers of adult females collected in litter/soil samples of the Caatinga and Pantanal, extensive Brazilian biomes. This new species can be distinguished from other Lasioseius species mainly by having fixed cheliceral digit with three teeth in addition to apical tooth, most dorsal shield setae leaf-shaped, and ventrianal shield with seven pairs of setae (including Jv5) in addition to the circumanal setae. The determined nucleotide sequences of the CytB gene and of ITSS of Lasioseius foliatisetus n. sp. are the first data of these types deposited in a published database (GenBank) for a species of this genus. The phylogenetic tree generated in the analysis of ITSS sequences showed a clade constituted only by species of the superfamily Phytoseoidea, including L. foliatisetus n. sp.. The phylogenetic tree generated in the ML analysis based on CytB showed a separation of the blattisociid species (including L. foliatisetus n. sp.) in one clade and the phytoseiid species in another clade. The analysis of the 28S 13 domain by itself did not allow the separation of the new species here described from species of other blattisociid genera.

Discovery of the genus Eukoenenia (Palpigradi: Eukoeneniidae) from China and description of a new species

A new species, Eukoenenia sinensis, is described and illustrated from specimens collected in two forests in nearby islands in Guangdong Province, Southeast China. The genus Eukoenenia is recorded for the first time from China and it represents the second palpigrade species reported for this country after Koeneniodes madecassus Rémy, 1950. The new species shares several morphological characters with other soil-dwelling Eukoenenia species from Africa, Asia and South America. One of the distinctive characters of E. sinensis is the presence of 6 pairs of setae (a1, a2, a3, a4 þ s1, s2) on opisthosomal sternites IV to VI, a character only shared with another five species. Eukoenenia sinensis is most similar to specimens captured from Chile and identified by Dr. Bruno Condé as Eukoenenia cf. grassii; several morphological and morphometric features allow to differentiate both species. From the other four species, two can be readily distinguished by their troglomorphic characters, and the other two are soil-dwelling species that show differences in the chaetotaxy of basitarsus IV, metapeltidium, deutotritosternum, opisthosomal tergites III–VI, as well as the number of teeth in the cheliceral fingers. In addition, E. sinensis is the first palpigrade to exhibit sexual dimorphism in the number of thick setae of coxa IV.

A new species of Mycodiplosis gall midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) feeding on myrtle rust Austropuccinia psidii

ABSTRACT Larvae of an undescribed gall midge were found feeding on the rust fungus Austropuccinia psidii that was infecting leaves of trees Lophomyrtus bullata, Lophomyrtus obcordata and Syzygium jambos (all Myrtaceae) in New Zealand. The new species belongs to a cosmopolitan, rust- and mildew-feeding genus Mycodiplosis (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). The description of Mycodiplosis constricta sp. nov. includes morphology of adults, pupa and larva, and the sequence of a segment of the Cytochrome Oxidase unit I mitochondrial gene. The new species differs from its congeners in an unusual aedeagus and a peculiar male hypoproct. The aedeagus is rounded apically and strongly constricted subapically, bearing subapical setulose sensoria. The hypoproctal lobes are long and narrow, dorsally they are covered with long apical setulae, ventrally they are bare, each lobe bearing a pair of setae of which one is placed apically, the other subapically. The currently known geographical distribution of the new species is confined to the North Island of New Zealand. While it is likely that larvae of the new species decrease numbers of viable uredinia of Austropuccinia psidii, the exact impact of the new species on the population dynamics of the fungal host as a biological control agent and/or a transmission vector remain to be determined. http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:3D39F717-49E0-4B46-9033-BE5A244D6A39

A new genus and new species of macronyssid mite (Mesostigmata: Gamasina: Macronyssidae) from Brazilian caves including molecular data and key for genera occurring in Brazil

A new genus and a new species of macronyssid mites is described based on material collected from caves in Minas Gerais state, Southeastern Brazil, and additional occurrences from caves in Rio de Janeiro (Southeast) and Pará (Eastern Amazon region). The new genus may be distinguished from other Macronyssidae genera by the combination of sternal shield with a distinct X-shaped area; sternal shield bearing three pairs of setae and two pairs of pores; sternal gland absent; anterior spur on coxa II lacking; adults with dorsal shield entire and j and J series complete; adults and protonymphs with setae J5 minute; males with strong-pores on dorsal shield and peritrema short extending from posterior margin of coxae II to the anterior margin of coxae IV. A key for genera occurring in Brazil is provided, as well sequences from the mitochondrial large subunit of ribosome (16S).

A new genus of Laelapidae (Acari: Mesostigmata) from South America

Hypoaceus gen. nov., a new genus of the family Laelapidae Berlese, is erected and described to accommodate Hypoaceus eugenitalis (Karg) comb. nov. and Hypoaceus pycnosis (Karg) comb. nov. that have been collected from Chile and Argentina. Important morphological characters of the above-mentioned species are presented and redescribed based on the type species. Some of the important morphological characters of the new genus are as follows: setae st4 absent; genitiventral shield well expanded posterior to coxae IV with two-three pairs of setae including st5 and bears numerous pore-like structures on the surface; interior appendages of internal malae elongate and scarcely barbed; epistome with fair denticles anteriorly; supralabral process long and style like; straight spermadactyl is about of twice of movable digit length; apotele two tined; male holoventral shield bearing numerous pore-like structures on the surface. Tarsus II both in male and female bearing strong spur or spine-like setae (av1 and pv1); male with strong spur-like seta (pv1) on femur II.

Stigmaeus exilis, a new fusiform species of Stigmaeus Koch (Acariformes: Stigmaeidae) from Sansa, Turkey

A new species of the genus Stigmaeus (Stigmaeidae), S. exilis sp. nov., is described based on the adult females collected from soil in a dead walnut tree hollow from Sansa Gorge, Turkey. Illustrations and phase contrast microscopic images of the new species are also given here. This species can be distinguished by having thin and slender body, anterior margin of prodorsum microtuberculate, posterior margin of propodosomal shield indenting forward by striae, apodemal marking present, eyes and postocular bodies absent, median zonal shield entire, suranal shield entire and bearing three pairs of setae, and femur II with four setae.

A new species of emTyphlodromus/em (Anthoseius) De Leon and redescription of emT. (A.)/em emmontanus/em Chant amp; Yoshida-Shaul from Russia.

Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) tetraporus sp. nov., collected on grasses in Crimea, is proposed as a new species for science. The new species can be separated from all known species of Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) by the combination of following characters; peritreme extending almost to level of setae j1, four pairs of solenostomes on dorsal shield, two pairs of setae on sternal shield, a sclerotised v-shaped plate posterior to sternal shield, four pairs of pre-anal setae, a pair of small rounded pre-anal solenostomes, differentiated and larger atrium of spermatheca and eight setae on genu II. In addition, T. (A.) montanus Chant Yoshida-Shaul (Acari: Phytoseiidae), a species only known based on its original description from Canada is reported for the first time in Russia. The new record is redescribed and illustrated based on female specimens collected from Prunus padus L. (Rosaceae) where it was associated with eriophyid mites in Pereval Seminskiy, Altai Republic. This species may be an important predator as a potential biological control agent of eriophyid mites.

Revision and phylogeny of the genus Andocaeculus (Acari: Caeculidae) I: the A. weyrauchi species group.

Two new caeculid mite species, Andocaeculus beatrizrosso sp. nov. and Andocaeculus burmeisteri sp. nov., are described and A. weyrauchi (Franz, 1964) is redescribed based on material collected at the type locality. All post-larval stages are described for A. weyrauchi and Andocaeculus beatrizrosso sp. nov. and stochastic variation in the idiosomal and appendages chaetotaxy is considered. A clade of Andocaeculus containing the three species (the A. weyrauchi group) is established based on morphological characters, and confirmed with a Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of sequences from the CO1 marker. As result of the same analysis, the absence of the (st) pair of setae on leg II is proposed as a derived condition for the genus Andocaeculus, and the presence of the φ solenidion on leg IV is a derived condition for some Andocaeculus species of the A. weyrauchi species group.

First record of the genus Reductholaspis Emberson (Acari: Macrochelidae) from the Oriental Region with description of a new species from southwestern China

ABSTRACT Reductholaspis Emberson is rediagnosed with the description of a new species, Reductholaspis longicorniculus sp. nov. Shen & Yi from southwestern China. This is the first report of the genus Reductholaspis from the Oriental Region and the first described male for the genus. Description of the final stadium larva of Bayadera serrata Davies & Yang, 1996 (Odonata: Euphaeidae) from Thailand

The damselfly genus Bayadera Selys, 1853 comprises 17 species, but the larvae of only four species have been described. Here we describe the final stadium larva of another species—Bayadera serrata Davies & Yang, 1996. Larvae were collected from a headwater stream at Nam Nao National Park, Phetchabun Province, Thailand. The larva of B. serrata is distinguished from congener species following the presence of one to three distinct spines on the genae, two pairs of setae on the ligula, one pair of setae on the ventral side of prementum, the presence of three teeth of the distal end of the labial palp, the presence of a plate-like spine on the gonapophyses, the presence of a row of rod-like setae on the distal end of the tibial comb, the presence of a cluster of long simple setae on the abdominal terga S3–9, and the presence of short terminal filament of the caudal gills. The larvae of genus Bayadera have been compared with other known larvae from family Euphaidae. Key is provided to the genera with known Southeast Asian euphaeid larvae: Anisopleura, Bayadera, and Euphaea.

Arrhenoseius Walter & Lindquist (Mesostigmata: Blattisociidae): newly recorded from the Oriental Realm with description of two new species from China

ABSTRACT The genus Arrhenoseius Walter & Lindquist, 2000 is recorded for the first time from the Oriental Realm on the basis of two new species. Arrhenoseius hallidayi sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species of the genus by the ventrianal shield bearing five pairs of ventral setae and unsclerotised ventro-lateral cuticle without setae in the adult female, and Arrhenoseius granulatus sp. nov. can be distinguished by the ventrianal shield bearing eight pairs of ventral setae and unsclerotised lateral cuticle with six pairs of setae. A New Unusual Species of Gaeolaelaps Evans and Till (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae) from South Africa

This paper reports on a new species of mite of the genus Gaeolaelaps from South Africa — Gaeolaelaps olszanowskiisp. nov. collected from soil in grassland. The new species is described based on morphological characters of the adult female. The new species is characterised by a number of exceptional characters in the genus: dorsal shield with 36 pairs of setae, genital shield drop-shaped, markedly expanded laterally past level of setae st5, subcapitulum with irregularly denticulate lines projecting outward from hypostomal groove, deutosternal rows with only 2–5 denticles, genua of legs II and III with only ten and eight setae, respectively (usually with 11 and nine setae, respectively). However, the chelicerae, internal malae and labrum of this new species are similar to freeliving forms, suggesting that it may be a predator of small invertebrates living in soil.

Ornithodoros cerradoensis n. sp. (Acari: Argasidae), a member of the Ornithodoros talaje (Guérin-Méneville, 1849) group, parasite of rodents in the Brazilian Savannah

Ornithodoros cerradoensis n. sp. is described from field-collected and laboratory reared nymphs, males, females, and larvae parasitizing the rodents Cavia aperea and Thrichomys sp. in the Brazilian Savannah. This new species is morphologically and genetically related with the Ornithodoros talaje group and can be separated from other Neotropical species using the following combination of characters: larva with 18 pairs of setae on dorsum (seven anterolateral, four central and seven posterolateral), hypostome with median dentition 2/2; adults provided with large mammillae; dorsal disks surrounded by bulked marginal ridges delimiting barely pebbled areas; three disks in the anterolateral file, and median disk not merging with the posteromedian file. Feeding assays in the laboratory demonstrated that (1) larvae of O. cerradoensis are slow-feeders (∼6 days), (2) first nymphal instar (N1) molts to second instar (N2) without feeding, and (3) N2 and third nymphal instar (N3) engorge rapidly (minutes). With the exception of Ornithodoros hasei nymphs that depict flattened bodies, O. cerradoensis N1, N2, and N3 highly resemble homologous instars of other species in O. talaje sensu lato, therefore are not suitable for morphological comparisons within the group. In addition to morphological signature of larvae and adults that separate this new species; results of cross-mating attempts between O. cerradoensis and Ornithodoros guaporensis a morphologically and phylogenetically closely related species that also parasitizes rodents in the Brazilian Savannah; a Principal Component Analysis using larval characters; and a phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial markers, support O. cerradoensis as an independent lineage within the Ornithodorinae.
