The Impacts of Air-Sea Fluxes and Model Resolution on Seasonal and Inter-Annual Variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation across the OSNAP West Section

The present study investigates the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in the sub-polar North Atlantic. Despite the identification of a weaker AMOC across the OSNAP (Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program) West section, low-resolution models have continuously overestimated the subpolar AMOC link to the Labrador Sea Water mass formation, underscoring the need for a deeper understanding of this process. Nevertheless, strong air-sea gas exchange from the surface to the deep ocean, associated with the ventilation of the subpolar North Atlantic by Labrador Sea Water means the Labrador Sea remains a crucial region to study. To explore the AMOC across OSNAP, we use three configurations of the NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) ocean model with varying horizontal and vertical resolutions, including a 1/60th degree Adaptive Grid Refinement In Fortran (AGRIF) nest over the Labrador Sea. The high-resolution configuration best represents the OSNAP estimates of mean AMOC. The modeled mean and seasonal AMOC using the high-resolution configuration are improved by switching to an atmospheric forcing with stronger air-sea heat loss, while showing minimal sensitivity to the Greenland melt freshwater input. The results highlight the impact of the model resolution and representation of atmospheric forcing on the seasonal and interannual variability of subpolar AMOC link to the water mass formation in the Labrador basin.

Overturning in the subpolar North Atlantic: a review.

The Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) was initiated in the spring of 2010 through a collaborative effort involving the USA, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada. A key feature of OSNAP is a trans-basin observing system deployed in the summer of 2014 for the continuous measure of volume, heat and freshwater fluxes in the subpolar North Atlantic. This review focuses on advancements made possible by the collective OSNAP observations. Chief among those advancements is the quantification of the dominant role of the eastern subpolar North Atlantic in the production of dense waters that reside in the lower limb of the overturning: the Irminger and Iceland basins contributed approximately three times as much dense water compared with the Labrador Sea over the observational period. Other advancements include elucidation of the relationship between convective activity in the basin interior and boundary current anomalies; the spread of overflow waters in the subpolar region; the seasonality of the meridional volume, heat and freshwater fluxes; and the challenges involved in designing a simpler, less costly observing system. Collectively, OSNAP measurements are laying a framework on which to assess the overturning circulation's vulnerability to continued warming and freshening as climate change continues apace. Variability of Eddy Formation off the West Greenland Coast from a 1/60° Model

Abstract Eddies generated off the west Greenland coast modulate the deep convection in the Labrador Sea, while there are still open questions related to their formation mechanisms. Using 11 years (2008–18) of output from a NEMO model configured with a 1/60° nest in the Labrador Sea, we present the patterns of baroclinic and barotropic instability off the west Greenland coast. We highlight the generation of Irminger Rings at Cape Desolation and boundary current eddies at the location of the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) West section. In between these formation sites, eddy energy attenuation occurs along the West Greenland Current (WGC). Overall, baroclinic instability dominates in the upper 1000 m and is twice as strong as the barotropic instability. Seasonally, the instabilities are generally twice as strong in winter compared to summer. Interannually from 2008 to 2018, the instabilities generally show a strengthening trend, with values in 2018 two to three times as strong as those in 2008. We found that on an interannual time scale, the strengthening of WGC and the steepening of its velocity contours enhance the barotropic instability, and the intrusion of the upper Irminger Sea Intermediate Water (uISIW) on the Irminger Water enhances the baroclinic instability by increasing the horizontal density gradient. On a seasonal time scale, variability of the eddy momentum and density fluxes modulate the barotropic and baroclinic instability, respectively. From observation-based datasets, we also found that the downstream eddy kinetic energy is highly correlated with the uISIW transports, suggesting that the amount of uISIW affects the eddy formation. Using a very high-resolution numerical model, our study provides new insight into the variability and mechanisms of eddy formation along the west Greenland coast. Significance Statement Vigorous eddy activity exists off the west Greenland coast. The eddies flux buoyancy to the interior Labrador Sea and thus weaken the convection, which feeds the lower limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Given uncertainties in the eddy formation mechanisms, by using an ocean model with very high resolution that resolves those eddies, we show the factors that control the production and variability of the eddy formation off the western coast of Greenland. The eddy formation generally strengthens over the years 2008–18, which is a result of the intrusion of intermediate water on the continental slope and a stronger boundary current. The eddy formation shows a seasonal cycle—it is generally the strongest in winter and weakest in summer, which is modulated by the seasonal variability of eddy momentum and density fluxes.

Exploring the AMOC Connectivity Between the RAPID and OSNAP Lines With a Model‐Based Data Set

AbstractTwo major trans‐basin mooring arrays, the Rapid Climate Change‐Meridional Overturning Circulation and Heatflux Array (RAPID) at 26.5°N since 2004 and the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) situated at 53°–60°N since 2014, have been continuously monitoring the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This study explores the connectivity of AMOC across these two mooring lines from a novel adiabatic perspective utilizing a model‐based data set. The findings unveil significant in‐phase connections facilitated by the adiabatic basinwide redistribution of water between the two lines on a monthly timescale. This adiabatic mode is a possible cause for the observed subpolar AMOC seasonality by OSNAP. Furthermore, the Labrador Sea was identified as a hotspot for adiabatic forcing of the overturning circulations, primarily attributed to its dynamic isopycnal movements.

Seasonal overturning variability in the eastern North Atlantic subpolar gyre: a Lagrangian perspective

Abstract. Both observations and ocean reanalyses show a pronounced seasonality in the strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC) within the eastern North Atlantic subpolar gyre (eSPG). However, attributing this overturning seasonality to seasonal dense water formation remains challenging owing to the wide distribution of recirculation timescales within the Iceland and Irminger basins. Here, we investigate the nature of seasonal overturning variability using Lagrangian water parcel trajectories initialised across the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) East section within an eddy-permitting ocean sea ice hindcast. By adopting a Lagrangian perspective, we show that the seasonal minimum of the Eulerian overturning at OSNAP East in autumn results from a combination of enhanced stratification and increased southward transport within the upper East Greenland Current. This convergence of southward transport within the MOC upper limb is explained by decreasing water parcel recirculation times in the upper Irminger Sea, consistent with a gyre-scale response to seasonal wind forcing. To account for the diversity of recirculation times within the eSPG, we also quantify the Lagrangian overturning (LMOC) as the total dense water formation along water parcel trajectories. The majority of water parcels, sourced from the central and southern branches of the North Atlantic Current, fail to return to OSNAP East prior to experiencing wintertime diapycnal transformation into the lower limb, and thus they determine the mean strength of the LMOC within the eSPG (8.9 ± 2.2 Sv). The strong seasonality of the LMOC is explained by a small collection of upper-limb water parcels, circulating rapidly (≤ 8.5 months) in the upper Irminger and central Iceland basins, whose along-stream transformation is determined by their month of arrival at OSNAP East.

Mixing and air–sea buoyancy fluxes set the time-mean overturning circulation in the subpolar North Atlantic and Nordic Seas

Abstract. The overturning streamfunction as measured at the OSNAP (Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program) mooring array represents the transformation of warm, salty Atlantic Water into cold, fresh North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). The magnitude of the overturning at the OSNAP array can therefore be linked to the transformation by air–sea buoyancy fluxes and mixing in the region north of the OSNAP array. Here, we estimate these water mass transformations using observational-based, reanalysis-based and model-based datasets. Our results highlight that air–sea fluxes alone cannot account for the time-mean magnitude of the overturning at OSNAP, and therefore a residual mixing-driven transformation is required to explain the difference. A cooling by air–sea heat fluxes and a mixing-driven freshening in the Nordic Seas, Iceland Basin and Irminger Sea precondition the warm, salty Atlantic Water, forming subpolar mode water classes in the subpolar North Atlantic. Mixing in the interior of the Nordic Seas, over the Greenland–Scotland Ridge and along the boundaries of the Irminger Sea and Iceland Basin drive a water mass transformation that leads to the convergence of volume in the water mass classes associated with NADW. Air–sea buoyancy fluxes and mixing therefore play key and complementary roles in setting the magnitude of the overturning within the subpolar North Atlantic and Nordic Seas. This study highlights that, for ocean and climate models to realistically simulate the overturning circulation in the North Atlantic, the small-scale processes that lead to the mixing-driven formation of NADW must be adequately represented within the model's parameterisation scheme.

Lagrangian Overturning Pathways in the Eastern Subpolar North Atlantic

Abstract The strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) at subpolar latitudes is dominated by water mass transformation in the eastern subpolar North Atlantic Ocean (SPNA). However, the distribution of this overturning across the individual circulation pathways of both the Subpolar Gyre (SPG) and the Nordic seas overflows remains poorly understood. Here, we introduce a novel Lagrangian measure of the density-space overturning to quantify the principal pathways of the time-mean overturning circulation within an eddy-permitting ocean model hindcast. By tracing the trajectories of water parcels initialized from the northward inflows across the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) East section, we show that water mass transformation along the pathways of the eastern SPG accounts for 55% of the mean strength of the eastern subpolar AMOC. Water parcels following the dominant SPG pathway, sourced from the Subarctic Front, form upper North Atlantic Deep Water by circulating horizontally across sloping isopycnals in less than 2 years. A slower SPG route, entrained by overflow waters south of the Iceland–Faroes Ridge, is a crucial conduit for subtropical-origin water masses to penetrate the deep ocean on subdecadal time scales. On reproducing our findings using time-averaged velocity and hydrographic fields, we further show that the Nordic seas overflow pathways integrate multiple decades of water mass transformation before returning across the Greenland–Scotland Ridge. We propose that the strong disparity between the overturning time scales of the SPG (interannual) and the Nordic seas overflows (multidecadal) has important implications for the propagation of density anomalies within the eastern SPNA and hence the sources of AMOC variability.

Circulation and overturning in the eastern North Atlantic subpolar gyre

This study describes new transport estimates of the North Atlantic Current in the Iceland Basin, and uses these results along with other contemporaneous measurements to determine mass and overturning budgets for the eastern North Atlantic subpolar gyre. As part of the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), estimates of the North Atlantic Current are determined using three full-depth dynamic height moorings spanning the Iceland Basin and are supplemented by Argo and satellite altimetry data. Along with historical estimates of the exchanges over the Iceland-Scotland Ridge, additional OSNAP results from the Rockall Trough and Rockall-Hatton Bank regions are used to calculate transport budgets in different density layers over a broad portion of the eastern subpolar gyre. Results show that 13–14 Sv of the North Atlantic Current (σθ < 27.8 kg m−3) flow northward into the middle of the Iceland Basin through a primary baroclinic flow near 23.5°W and a secondary quasi-barotropic flow near 26°W. Together with the observed northward flow in the Rockall-Hatton area, we conclude that 19–20 Sv of the upper limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (σθ < 27.56 kg m−3) flows into the region where nearly 40 % of it (7.3 Sv) is converted into the lower limb primarily through progressive water mass modification from atmospheric cooling. This accounts for nearly half of the strength of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation defined by the full OSNAP array extending across the basin from Greenland to Scotland.

Overflow water pathways in the North Atlantic

As part of the international Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), 135 acoustically-tracked deep floats were deployed to track the spreading pathways of Iceland-Scotland Overflow Water (ISOW) and Denmark Strait Overflow Water (DSOW) from 2014 to 2018. These water masses, which originate in the Nordic Seas, are transported by the deepest branch of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The OSNAP floats provide the first directly-observed, comprehensive Lagrangian view of ISOW and DSOW spreading pathways throughout the subpolar North Atlantic. The collection of OSNAP float trajectories, complemented by model simulations, reveals that their pathways are (a) not restricted to western boundary currents, and (b) remarkably different from each other in character. The spread of DSOW from the Irminger Sea is primarily via the swift deep boundary currents of the Irminger and Labrador Seas, whereas the spread of ISOW out of the Iceland Basin is slower and along multiple export pathways. The characterization of these Overflow Water pathways has important implications for our understanding of the AMOC and its variability. Finally, reconstructions of AMOC variability from proxy data, involving either the strength of boundary currents and/or the property variability of deep waters, should account for the myriad pathways of DSOW and ISOW, but particularly so for the latter.

Historical Reconstruction of Subpolar North Atlantic Overturning and Its Relationship to Density

AbstractThe connections between the overturning of the subpolar North Atlantic and regional density changes are assessed on interannual and decadal timescales using historical, data‐based reconstructions of the overturning over the last 60 years and forward model integrations with buoyancy and wind forcing. The data‐based reconstructions reveal a dominant eastern basin contribution to the subpolar overturning in density space and changes in the overturning reaching ±2.5 Sv, which are both in accord with the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP). The zonally integrated geostrophic velocity across the basin is connected to boundary contrasts in Montgomery potential in density space. The overturning for the eastern side of the basin is strongly correlated with density changes in the Irminger and Labrador Seas, while the overturning for the western side is correlated with boundary density changes in the Labrador Sea. These boundary density signals are a consequence of local atmospheric forcing and transport of upstream density changes. In forward model experiments, a localized density increase over the Irminger Sea increases the overturning over both sides of the basin due to dense waters spreading to the Labrador Sea. Conversely, a localized density increase over the Labrador Sea only increases the overturning for the western basin and instead eventually decreases the overturning for the eastern basin. Labrador Sea density provides a useful overturning metric by its direct control of the overturning over the western side and lower latitudes of the subpolar basin.

Rapid Freshening of Iceland Scotland Overflow Water Driven by Entrainment of a Major Upper Ocean Salinity Anomaly

AbstractNewly available mooring observations from the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) show an abrupt decline in Iceland Scotland Overflow (ISOW) salinity from 2017 to 2018 summer. Previous declines in ISOW salinity of similar magnitude have largely been attributed to changes in convectively formed deep waters in the Nordic Seas on decadal time scales. We show that this rapid decline in salinity was driven by entrainment of a major upper ocean salinity anomaly in the Iceland Basin. This is shown by tracking the propagation of the upper ocean anomaly into ISOW using a combination of mooring and Argo observations, surface drifter trajectories, and numerical model results. A 2‐year total transit time from the upper ocean into the ISOW layer was found. The results show that entrainment allows for rapid modification of ISOW, and consequently the lower limb of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, on subdecadal timescales.

Observation-based estimates of heat and freshwater exchanges from the subtropical North Atlantic to the Arctic

Continuous measurements from the OSNAP (Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program) array yield the first estimates of trans-basin heat and salinity transports in the subpolar latitudes. For the period from August 2014 to May 2018, there is a poleward heat transport of 0.50 ± 0.05 PW and a poleward salinity transport of 12.5 ± 1.0 Sv across the OSNAP section. Based on the mass and salt budget analyses, we estimate that a surface freshwater input of 0.36 ± 0.05 Sv over the broad subpolar-Arctic region is needed to balance the ocean salinity change created by the OSNAP transports. The overturning circulation is largely responsible for setting these heat and salinity transports (and the derived surface freshwater input) derived from the OSNAP array, while the gyre (isopycnal) circulation contributes to a lesser, but still significant, extent. Despite its relatively weak overturning and heat transport, the Labrador Sea is a strong contributor to salinity and freshwater changes in the subpolar region. Combined with trans-basin transport estimates at other locations, we provide new estimates for the time-mean surface heat and freshwater divergences over a wide domain of the Arctic-North Atlantic region to the north and south of the OSNAP line. Furthermore, we estimate the total heat and freshwater exchanges across the surface area of the extratropical North Atlantic between the OSNAP and the RAPID-MOCHA (RAPID Meridional Overturning Circulation and Heat-flux Array) arrays, by combining the cross-sectional transports with vertically-integrated ocean heat and salinity content. Comparisons with the air-sea heat and freshwater fluxes from atmospheric reanalysis products show an overall consistency, yet with notable differences in the magnitudes during the observation time period.

Submesoscale modulation of deep water formation in the Labrador Sea

Submesoscale structures fill the ocean surface, and recent numerical simulations and indirect observations suggest that they may extend to the ocean interior. It remains unclear, however, how far-reaching their impact may be—in both space and time, from weather to climate scales. Here transport pathways and the ultimate fate of the Irminger Current water from the continental slope to Labrador Sea interior are investigated through regional ocean simulations. Submesoscale processes modulate this transport and in turn the stratification of the Labrador Sea interior, by controlling the characteristics of the coherent vortices formed along West Greenland. Submesoscale circulations modify and control the Labrador Sea contribution to the global meridional overturning, with a linear relationship between time-averaged near surface vorticity and/or frontogenetic tendency along the west coast of Greenland, and volume of convected water. This research puts into contest the lesser role of the Labrador Sea in the overall control of the state of the MOC argued through the analysis of recent OSNAP (Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program) data with respect to estimates from climate models. It also confirms that submesoscale turbulence scales-up to climate relevance, pointing to the urgency of including its advective contribution in Earth systems models.

Transport and Evolution of the East Reykjanes Ridge Current

AbstractThis study of the first continuous multiyear observations of the East Reykjanes Ridge Current (ERRC) reveals a highly variable, mostly barotropic southwestward flow with a mean transport of 10–13 Sv. The ERRC effectively acts as a western boundary current in the Iceland Basin on the eastern flank of the Reykjanes Ridge. As part of the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), continuous measurements of the ERRC have been maintained for the first time using acoustic Doppler current profilers, current meters, and dynamic height moorings at six mooring sites near 58°N since 2014. Together with satellite altimetry and Argo profile and drift data, the mean transport, synoptic variability, water mass properties, and upstream and downstream pathways of the ERRC are examined. Results show that the ERRC forms in the northeastern Iceland Basin at the convergence of surface waters from the North Atlantic Current and deeper Icelandic Slope Water formed along the Iceland‐Faroe Ridge. The ERRC becomes denser as it cools and freshens along the northern and western topography of the Basin before retroflecting over the Reykjanes Ridge near 59°N into the Irminger Current. Analysis of the flow‐weighted density changes along the ERRC's path reveals that it is responsible for about one third of the net potential density change of waters circulating around the rim of the subpolar gyre.

The Observation-Based Application of a Regional Thermohaline Inverse Method to Diagnose the Formation and Transformation of Water Masses North of the OSNAP Array from 2013 to 2015

AbstractThe strength of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in the North Atlantic is dependent upon the formation of dense waters that occurs at high northern latitudes. Wintertime deep convection in the Labrador and Irminger Seas forms the intermediate water mass known as Labrador Sea Water (LSW). Changes in the rate of formation and subsequent export of LSW are thought to play a role in MOC variability, but formation rates are uncertain and the link between formation and export is complex. We present the first observation-based application of a recently developed regional thermohaline inverse method (RTHIM) to a region encompassing the Arctic and part of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre for the years 2013, 2014, and 2015. RTHIM is a novel method that can diagnose the formation and export rates of water masses such as the LSW identified by their temperature and salinity, apportioning the formation rates into contributions from surface fluxes and interior mixing. We find LSW formation rates of up to 12 Sv (1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s−1) during 2014–15, a period of strong wintertime convection, and around half that value during 2013 when convection was weak. We also show that the newly convected water is not exported directly, but instead is mixed isopycnally with warm, salty waters that have been advected into the region, before the products are then exported. RTHIM solutions for 2015 volume, heat, and freshwater transports are compared with observations from a mooring array deployed for the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) and show good agreement, lending validity to our results.

A sea change in our view of overturning in the subpolar North Atlantic.

To provide an observational basis for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projections of a slowing Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in the 21st century, the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP) observing system was launched in the summer of 2014. The first 21-month record reveals a highly variable overturning circulation responsible for the majority of the heat and freshwater transport across the OSNAP line. In a departure from the prevailing view that changes in deep water formation in the Labrador Sea dominate MOC variability, these results suggest that the conversion of warm, salty, shallow Atlantic waters into colder, fresher, deep waters that move southward in the Irminger and Iceland basins is largely responsible for overturning and its variability in the subpolar basin.

On the Linkage between Labrador Sea Water Volume and Overturning Circulation in the Labrador Sea: A Case Study on Proxies

Although proxies have generally been used to study deep ocean convection and overturning circulation in the Labrador Sea, their efficacy has not been explicitly evaluated because observations that directly measure those variables are scarce. In this study, the volume of newly formed Labrador Sea Water (LSW) and the overturning circulation in the Labrador Sea are estimated using observational data and output from a high-resolution ocean model and then compared to proxies used to represent those variables. The comparisons reveal the limitations of proxies, highlighting the desirability of robust estimates derived from direct monitoring in the region [i.e., from Argo and Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP)]. A linkage among LSW formation, overturning circulation in the Labrador Sea, and the export of LSW from the basin on interannual time scales is found in the model.

Calculating the Meridional Volume, Heat, and Freshwater Transports from an Observing System in the Subpolar North Atlantic: Observing System Simulation Experiment

AbstractA transbasin monitoring array from Labrador to Scotland was deployed in the summer of 2014 as part of the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP). The aim of the observing system is to provide a multiyear continuous measure of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and the associated meridional heat and freshwater transports in the subpolar North Atlantic. Results from the array are expected to improve the understanding of the variability of the subpolar transports and the nature and degree of the AMOC’s latitudinal dependence. In this present work, the measurements of the OSNAP array are described and a suite of observing system simulation experiments in an eddy-permitting numerical model are used to assess how well these measurements will estimate the fluxes across the OSNAP section. The simulation experiments indicate that the OSNAP array and calculation methods will adequately capture the mean and temporal variability of the overturning circulation and of the heat and freshwater transports across the subpolar North Atlantic.

Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program: A New International Ocean Observing System

Abstract For decades oceanographers have understood the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) to be primarily driven by changes in the production of deep-water formation in the subpolar and subarctic North Atlantic. Indeed, current Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projections of an AMOC slowdown in the twenty-first century based on climate models are attributed to the inhibition of deep convection in the North Atlantic. However, observational evidence for this linkage has been elusive: there has been no clear demonstration of AMOC variability in response to changes in deep-water formation. The motivation for understanding this linkage is compelling, since the overturning circulation has been shown to sequester heat and anthropogenic carbon in the deep ocean. Furthermore, AMOC variability is expected to impact this sequestration as well as have consequences for regional and global climates through its effect on the poleward transport of warm water. Motivated by the need for a mechanistic understanding of the AMOC, an international community has assembled an observing system, Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP), to provide a continuous record of the transbasin fluxes of heat, mass, and freshwater, and to link that record to convective activity and water mass transformation at high latitudes. OSNAP, in conjunction with the Rapid Climate Change–Meridional Overturning Circulation and Heatflux Array (RAPID–MOCHA) at 26°N and other observational elements, will provide a comprehensive measure of the three-dimensional AMOC and an understanding of what drives its variability. The OSNAP observing system was fully deployed in the summer of 2014, and the first OSNAP data products are expected in the fall of 2017.
