Cognitive Assets and Setbacks of a Recorded Online English Language Conversation Course Offered to Non-Native Speakers at The World Islamic Sciences and Education University (WISE)

The thought of preparing and delivering a recorded online English language conversation course consisting of fifteen lectures that are to be offered as an elective course to overseas students of the B.A. level in Arabic language and literature at the World Islamic Sciences and Education University (WISE) at the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan seemed initially daunting. That is because the target students of this newly suggested program are not specializing in English and, therefore, may find this course extremely difficult to adequately benefit from in light of their varied proficiency levels. The nature of any conversation course obliges live interaction to achieve most, if not all, of its objectives. To explain, any conversation course, regardless of the target language and students, necessarily requires actual live interaction among the participants in that course in order to achieve satisfactory comprehension, fruitful communication, and adequate peer learning. In other words, the challenge behind the preparation and implementation of this conversation course lay in the entailed fundamental requirement of it being a recorded online one due to the target overseas students.

Factors Affecting Loneliness in Overseas Students: A Scooping Review

Overseas students have a high risk of experiencing loneliness due to increased social demands and feelings of homesickness. There have been many studies on factors affecting loneliness in overseas students, but there has been no explanation that discusses cultural factors, social isolation, social support, discrimination, geography and adaptation. Objective: This study was conducted to explore research findings related to factors that influence loneliness in overseas students. Methods: Researchers used the scoping review method to get a clear picture of the factors that influence loneliness in overseas students. A literature search was conducted using the keywords “loneliness factor” AND “overseas” AND “students”. The databases used were Sciencedirect, Scopus, and Pubmed. Inclusion criteria were articles from publications in the last 5 years (2019-2023), articles in English, quantitative and qualitative research with the research population in the form of loneliness in overseas students, the article was accessible. Screening was stepwise and documented according to the PRISMA flowchart. Results: Based on identification, there were 224 articles from sciencedirect, scopus, and pubmed. 9 articles were obtained that fit the criteria after going through the selection process. Researchers used the PEO question format (population, exposure, results) to find related research articles. Conclusion: Based on the analysis of 9 literatures, it is concluded that loneliness in overseas students is influenced by many factors such as cultural factors, social support, discrimination, geography, and adaptation.

Hubungan Antara Dukungan Sosial dengan Berfikir Positif pada Mahasiswa Rantau yang Sedang Mengerjakan Skripsi

Education is a means to educate the nation's life by producing a reliable young generation. An overseas student is a student who pursues his education by migrating. This study aims to examine the relationship between social support and positive thinking in overseas students who are working on a thesis. Students who have the ability to think positively will see that the difficulties and challenges experienced when compiling a thesis as something that must be passed and consider that the challenges and difficulties will further mature themselves, both intellectually and personality. The research method used in this study is correlational quantitative method. Correlation is one or more data analysis techniques that are quantitative in nature, two or more variables are said to be correlated if changes in one variable will be followed by changes in the other variable regularly in the same direction (positive correlation) or opposite (negative correlation). The subjects in this study were active students who were writing a thesis as many as 202 students in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Data collection is done by online distribution using google formular which measures social support and positive thinking distributed through social media, then tested using normality test, linearity test, and product moment correlation test. The results of the research conducted are that there is a very significant positive relationship between social support and positive thinking in overseas students who are working on a thesis, where this is known by the value of r = 0.933 with a significance of p = <0.000. This shows that there is a very significant positive relationship between social support and positive thinking. This study still has some shortcomings such as the research subjects in the type of college and in an unbalanced study programme, which is only on three campuses in DIY Yogyakarta.

An Exploration of Intercultural Challenges of Chinese Students studying abroad——A Case Study of Postgraduate Students’ Experience at one University in the UK

This research examines the cross-cultural difficulties encountered by first-year Chinese postgraduates at a university in the UK within the context of educational globalization. The swift growth of international student mobility, especially the substantial population of Chinese students studying overseas, necessitates a deeper comprehension of their intercultural issues. The study concentrates on three primary domains: educational norms, linguistic obstacles, and cultural disorientation. The transition from China’s lecture-centric educational model to the UK’s interactive and discussion-driven methodology is difficult. Language difficulties significantly affect students. This study examines the intercultural difficulties encountered by first-year Chinese graduate students at a university in the UK within the context of educational globalization. The swift growth of international student mobility, especially the substantial population of Chinese students studying overseas, necessitates a deeper comprehension of the student’s academic experiences. Cultural shocks necessitate that students acclimate to unfamiliar cultural settings, presenting both cognitive and emotional challenges. The research used a qualitative technique, doing in-depth interviews with Chinese graduate students to provide insights into their experiences. The results underscore the necessity for support mechanisms, such as language instruction, orientation initiatives, and mentorship, to assist students in overcoming the difficulties of an unfamiliar educational setting. The research finds that educational institutions must implement a comprehensive strategy to help international students by addressing academic, language, and cultural problems. By doing so, they may augment the educational sustainability of overseas students, facilitating their personal development and academic success. The research indicates that further studies should persist in examining the dynamic realm of educational globalization and the varied requirements of overseas students to guarantee their complete engagement in and advantage of the global educational experience.

The Study on the Construction of the Profile of Returned Overseas Students: A Case Study of Guangxi

With the deepening of globalization and the acceleration of talent mobility, returned overseas students have become an important force driving local economic innovation and social development. As a key link between China and ASEAN, Guangxi faces significant opportunities and challenges in attracting and utilizing returned overseas students. This paper analyzes the demographic characteristics, main issues, and current situation of returned overseas students in Guangxi, and proposes a series of paths and strategies to address these problems. The research finds that returned overseas students in Guangxi still face difficulties in employment matching, policy support, and social adaptation, with challenges particularly prominent in innovation and entrepreneurship support and career development opportunities. To address these issues, this paper suggests measures such as precise data collection and analysis, optimizing policy support, enhancing social integration, and strengthening the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to promote the effective introduction and long-term development of returned overseas students, thereby advancing Guangxi’s economic and social transformation and high-quality development.

Research on the Impact of Social and Emotional Support Provided by Chinese Social Media on Overseas Chinese Students

This study investigated the impact of Chinese social media on social and emotional support for overseas Chinese students. The survey results of 120 Chinese students overseas showed that most used Chinese social media to stay connected with family and friends and relieve negative emotions. The study showed that Chinese social media platforms play an important role in promoting the maintenance of emotional connections, alleviating loneliness, and supporting cross-cultural adaptation. In addition, although most students reported positive mental health outcomes, the emotional support provided by social media may not fully address cross-cultural adaptation issues and psychological stress from academic pressure, cultural differences, and language barriers. Although these platforms are important tools for emotional support, they have limitations in providing comprehensive social interactions and psychological support compared to offline interactions. This study emphasizes the need for all sectors of Chinese society to establish a more complete emotional support system for international students to enhance the happiness and cross-cultural adaptation of overseas Chinese students.

The Culture Shock Phenomenon of Overseas Students at IPB University Vocational School

This study explores the effectiveness of the collaboration between Samsung and Blackpink in enhancing Samsung’s brand image among young users. In the digital era, celebrity collaboration has become an important strategy for building brand image through social media. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected through a survey questionnaire distributed to Blackpink fans to understand their perceptions of this campaign. The study results indicate that the collaboration successfully strengthens emotional engagement, increases interest in Samsung products, and reinforces the brand’s image as a modern, relevant brand. Using the EPIC Model, variables such as Empathy and Persuasion were found to significantly impact the creation of a positive brand image. Furthermore, the collaboration effectively enhances Samsung’s uniqueness and brand value in the eyes of consumers, who view Samsung as an innovative and trend-following brand. These findings suggest that celebrity collaboration strategies are effective for building a strong brand image, particularly on social media, and can serve as a reference for other companies looking to leverage celebrity influence to achieve similar goals. The study also highlights the vital role of social media in expanding brand reach, fostering engagement, and enhancing consumer loyalty through a more personal approach. In an era where social media significantly influences consumer behavior, this collaboration proves that strong emotional connections with consumers are key to brand success.

Research on the Identity Reconstruction and Adaptation Strategies of Chinese Students Overseas in a Cross-Cultural Context

The "Blue Book Report on China's Overseas Study Development 2023-2024" shows that, according to UNESCO's latest data, there were 1.021 million Chinese students studying at overseas higher education institutions in 2021, ranking first globally. Cross-cultural communication among students abroad was an important topic of globalization. This paper looks at Chinese students' identity and how they adapt to cross-cultural talks abroad. With globalization, more Chinese students paper overseas, facing both challenges and chances. Using quality research, it analyzes their mental changes, ways to adapt, and how these affect their studies, social life, and plans. It finds that by joining in studies, socializing, and cultural events, Chinese students slowly change how they see themselves and their place in society and culture. Differences in culture, language trouble, social help, relationships, and plans all shape their adaptation. The paper shows that being open, learning languages, making friends, setting clear goals, and being good at cross-cultural talks help Chinese students deal with challenges and form a strong sense of who they are.

Research on the global competence and experience of undergraduates

In response to the growing demand for higher education to cultivate global talent amid contemporary global developments, this study investigates the status of Chinese universities’ efforts in fostering global competency among undergraduates. Addressing a research gap in understanding the relationship between students’ global experiences and their global competency, the study surveyed 3,513 undergraduates, comparing outcomes across different types of universities and analyzing key factors contributing to global competency. Using regression analysis, the study reveals that undergraduates from Project 985 universities scored significantly higher in global competency and engaged more frequently in globalization-related activities compared to their peers at nonelite institutions. Global experiences, including participation in internationalization-focused courses, academic events with global themes, social interactions with overseas students, and maintaining connections with foreign peers, were found to significantly enhance students’ global competency. These findings highlight the need to balance internationalization efforts across both elite and nonelite universities while emphasizing the importance of enriching students’ academic and communicative experiences. The study underscores the critical role of equitable and diverse internationalization strategies in developing global talent, offering actionable insights for policymakers and educators aiming to strengthen global competency across higher education institutions. Reviewing the Difficulties International Students Encounter in Their Social and Academic Lives in India

In recent decades, the number of foreign students enrolled in Indian colleges has increased significantly. The All- India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) (2021–2022) reports that there were around 47,000 international students enrolled in Indian colleges overall in 2021–2022, a 2% decrease from the year before. Of the 170 nations that sent students, Nepal sent the most (29%), followed by Afghanistan (8%), the United States (7%), Bangladesh (5%), the United Arab Emirates (4%), and Bhutan (2%). Approximately 75% of international students are enrolled in undergraduate programs, with business administration, science, engineering, and technology being the most popular disciplines for this demographic. Given the number of international students studying in the India, 15.5% of them are Africans, with the majority hailing from Nigeria, Tanzania Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Sudan. This study aims to investigate how overseas students, particularly African students, perceive the republic of India, which is sometimes referred to as the country of opportunity abroad. Many people think that local Indian company owners who wish to widen their horizons in the world, especially in Africa, can do so through African international students. Using auto-ethnographic research, this study examined the various academic and social difficulties encountered by international students in Indian universities in order to identify potential solutions. In order to identify and classify some of the difficulties faced by international students, this qualitative research approach employed the author's sequential auto ethnographic experience as a research tool. The researcher hopes that the research's conclusions will serve as a manual for future generations of foreign students hoping to study in India.

Komunikasi Antarpribadi Orang Tua dan Mahasiswa Rantau dalam Mengatasi Konflik Komunikasi Jarak Jauh

Interpersonal communication between parents and overseas students that are rare and less intensive, as well as limited distance and time, will lead to long-distance communication conflicts. The purpose of this study was to determine the interpersonal communication of parents and overseas students in overcoming long-distance communication conflicts. This study uses Deception theory using descriptive qualitative research methods and the post positivism paradigm. The category of informants in this study were key informants of overseas students who left their area of origin. The results of this study indicate that long-distance communication conflicts between parents and overseas students can be overcome by consistent long-distance interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication in conflict resolution can be said to be effective, the way parents and overseas students deal with long-distance communication conflicts must have an attitude of openness, empathy, support, positive feelings and equality.

Loneliness in overseas students: reviewed from father nurturance

The uneven condition of education in Indonesia has led to the phenomenon of overseas students. This phenomenon is an effort made by prospective students to obtain higher quality education or more according to their interests. Students who migrate certainly face bigger challenges, one of which is loneliness. Many studies reveal that the negative impact of feelings of loneliness experienced by a person, so it requires further study. The main objective of this study is to see how father nurturance influences loneliness among overseas students. This study used a quantitative approach with a total of 107 respondents. From this study, it was found that the role of the father has a significant influence on feelings of loneliness experienced by overseas students.

A111: A Study on Effect of Learning Martial Arts by Different People Influenced by Chinese Culture

Background/Purpose: To better develop multi-racial education of practicing and learning martial arts, this essay was written by using case analysis and information analysis. Methods: According to the recently HYX 16th World Wushu Championships, 76.9% athletes who learned about Chinese culture got the points higher than average. In addition, in the 9th World Kungfu Championships, 87% athletes had learned about Chinese culture won a prize in the contest. Meanwhile, we prepared 20 overseas students who started learning martial arts to identify whether learning Chinese culture was beneficial to martial arts learning. Every member in this program never studied Chinese culture and knew little about martial arts. Due to the gender difference in Chinese martial arts competition penalties, we recruited ten male and ten female volunteers, each gender of five individuals per group. Five were in the experimental group and five were in the control group. Each member of the test group did not receive Chinese culture-related content after each training session. The control group learned about Chinese culture after each training session. Each of the volunteers was between 18 and 22 years old and had a similar body type. We employed an experimental martial arts competition every Monday with concurrent scoring. Additionally, the rate of the locomotor performance was also considered as part of the rating that is rated according to Body Fat Rate, Heart Rate during exercise, 100 Meter Dash, and Flexibility. Each test was taken place on the Sunday following three training sessions a week. The intervention lasted for 5 weeks. Results: ANCOVA with repeated measures indicated that the control group had overall higher scores of the games than the experimental group (F = 7.13, p = 0.005, η2 = 0.117; F = 7.21, p = 0.006, η2 = 0.113). Beyond that, regarding the results of martial arts performance, the ANCOVA with repeated rate of each test had overall lower levels compared to the control group (F = 7.67, p = 0.005, η2 = 0.129). Conclusion: This experiment showed that learning relevant Chinese culture can effectively improve the performance of traditional martial arts without observing differences by gender or race. Therefore, learning Chinese culture in the world is an excellent means to promote Chinese martial arts to the world.

Social Media Use and Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Chinese Students Overseas: A Systematic Review

Due to the progress of globalization, as well as the advancement of transportation and communication tools, there is a greater interconnectedness among nations and regions worldwide. A common trend of it is the increasing prevalence of students opting to pursue tertiary education overseas. Asia has emerged as the largest exporter, sending the largest proportion of international students to the world, especially China. When studying in foreign countries, international students may encounter challenges from life and studies; then, social media has become a pivotal tool in their lives for obtaining information and interpersonal communication. This study intends to conduct a systematic review of the influence of social media on the cross-cultural adaptation of Chinese overseas students, who constitute the largest cohort of international students, and adopts databases Web of Science, Scopus and ScienceDirect. From 2014 to 2023, 15 studies met the inclusion criteria. The United States was the most studied geographic country, and most studies delved into cross-cultural adaptation from socio-cultural and psychological aspects, with less research from the academic aspect. Besides, these studies largely proved the positive role of social media in facilitating the attainment of social capital and enhancing psychological well-being among Chinese overseas students. Nevertheless, a few studies also showed the drawbacks of social media use. There is a call for studies on the correlation between academic adaptation of Chinese overseas students and social media use, as well as to explore international students’ proper use of social media.

Influence of Home Environment on Chinese Overseas Students’ English Learning

As studying abroad is gaining popularity, language barriers become a significant issue for most Chinese overseas students. While extensive existing studies have revealed the significant role of diverse factors influencing English learning, such as instructional design, motivation and institutional support, less attention has been paid towards the unavoidable internal factor– Home Environment. Highlighting a significant gap in existing literature, this study aims to explore the influence of the home environment on Chinese overseas students' English learning in higher education institutions. Underpinned by the Bronfenbrenner’s Sociocultural Theory, this study adopted a qualitative phenomenological method, and used thematic analysis to analyze interview data collected through WeChat Voice Call. The novelty of this study lies in its specific focus on the home environment’s role in shaping Chinese overseas students’ English learning, offering fresh insights for parents, educators, and institutions. The present study finds that most respondents reported an early English learning experience and adopted various ways to learn English yet they still face challenges, and that family background, family support, family culture values play an indispensable role in shaping Chinese overseas students’ English learning. Findings of this study offers valuable insight into the broader discourse on enhancing English acquisition, ultimately contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), especially SDG 4. Quality Education.

The Effects of Culture Shock on The Cultural Adaptation of Overseas Students in Thailand at King Mongkut’s University

This paper aims to examine the phenomenon of culture shock experienced by international students studying in Thailand for their master’s degree and explore their strategies for adapting to Thai culture. This research employed a semi-structured interview with eight international students at King Mongkut’s University of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. The participants completed the open-ended questionnaires and provided responses via a Google Docs link. The writer will use Kalervo Oberg's four stages of culture shock to better understand culture shock and the adaptation process of overseas students studying in Thailand. The research illustrates the causes behind international students' desire to pursue educational institutions in Thailand and their experiences with culture shock across the four stages, along with their adaptation process. The findings suggest that overseas students suffer from culture shock in relation to their surroundings, language, cultural norms, and academic areas.

Family Support for Student Wellbeing of Migrant Students at Universitas Hasanuddin Makassar

study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between family support and the welfare of migrant students. Knowing the level of student well being, and knowing the effective contribution of family social support to student well-being. The research subjects were 115 overseas students at Universitas Hasanuddin Makassar. The method uses a quantitative approach. The data analysis technique used in this study is the Product Moment correlation of the person. Based on the results of data analysis, the correlation coefficient was obtained as ???????????? = 0.723 with sig. = 0.000; p < 0.001, so that the proposed hypothesis is accepted, it can be said that there is a very significant positive relationship between family social support and student well-being. The effective contribution of family support to student well-being is 63.5% and the remaining 36.5% is influenced by other variables. The level of student well being of overseas students is included in the high category with an empirical mean of 69.20 and a hypothetical mean of 57.5. Family support is included in the high category with an empirical mean of 79.25 and a hypothetical mean family support scale of 62.5

Komunikasi Keluarga Dalam Memotivasi Mahasiswa Rantau Asal Papua Menempuh Pendidikan Tinggi di Jakarta

This article aims to determine the role of family communication in motivating higher education. Public education in Papua is not yet evenly distributed as a whole due to constraints on facilities, means, or understanding the importance of education itself. This research was conducted by conducting in-depth interviews with overseas students from Papua who were continuing their higher education (or studying) in Jakarta. Based on the Symbolic Interaction theory, an action will do something because there is an understanding of the meaning. This research shows that the five students interviewed have the same sense of the meaning of education, that education is important for a better future. So they consider college (thing) as something that must be done to achieve a good future. Therefore, they chose to study in Jakarta as a form of action (act). In the end, the meaning of the importance of education and what motivates them to study in Jakarta is the family, especially parents. Parents, as the smallest institution, who have been together since childhood, have been involved in providing education and giving them views on good education and the goals of education.

Optimalisasi Kesejahteraan Psikologis Mahasiswa Perantauan Melalui Konseling Komunitas Berbasis Self-Determination

Overseas students tend to study far from their place of residence. This makes students not in the environment of the closest people such as family, closest relatives, friends and friends at home. Living overseas is not easy to adjust to the new environment. Students who cannot adjust overseas tend to feel sad because they need to adjust to the culture in their new environment. This will certainly have an impact on the psychological well-being of overseas students, because not all of them are able to face these demands. Not a few of them feel lonely and alone. This research was conducted to find out how to optimize the psychological well-being of overseas students with self-determination-based community counseling. This research uses the literature review method which is carried out by finding several sources related to variables. The results showed that Self-Determination-based community counseling proved to have several effective efforts to support the psychological well-being of overseas students. The Self-Determination counseling approach model focuses on fulfilling three needs, namely competence, autonomy and connectedness. Implementation of Self-Determination-based community counseling includes identification of needs, formation of support groups, social activities, social skills training, autonomy facilities, mentoring, evaluation and feedback.

Exploring financial reverse remittances. A quantitative study in the Italian context

ABSTRACT While many studies examine the remittances sent by migrants to their home countries, little is known about the financial resources that flow from home countries to migrants abroad, also known as reverse remittances. Following an in-depth analysis of the limited existing literature, our study focuses on the practice of financial reverse remittances among migrants living in the Italian region of Lombardy to assess their incidence, their relationship with the migrants’ migration stage, and the occurrence of economic hardship. We build on a quantitative survey of 4,000 migrants carried out in 2014. Our research shows that overseas students, long-term migrants living with a partner, and, in general, migrants facing economic hardship and job insecurity are more likely to receive financial reverse remittances. The implications of our findings in light of the 2007–2008 global financial crisis in Italy are also discussed.
