What's in a Name? Shifting Identities of Traditional Organized Crime in Canada in the Transnational Fight against the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta

The Italian antimafia authorities have warned Canadian law enforcement about the risks and the growing concerns for the infiltration of clans of the Calabrian mafia, known as ‘ndrangheta, in Eastern Canada. 3 The alarm linked to the rise of the ‘ndrangheta challenges the paradigms of traditional organized crime in Canada, because the ‘ndrangheta is presented as traditional but also innovative and more pervasive than other mafia-type groups. Through access to confidential investigations and interviews of key specialist law enforcement teams in Toronto and Montreal, this article investigates today's institutional perception of mafia – the ‘ndrangheta in particular – in Canada when compared to Italian conceptualizations. I will argue that the changes in narratives in Canada can be read in relation to changes in the Italian identity in the country, moving towards regionalization and specialist knowledge of ethnic differences.

Aboriginal organized crime in Canada: Developing a typology for understanding and strategizing responses

The present study explores the theory and, to the greatest degree possible given the limitations of the data, the reality of aboriginal participation in what may be defined as ‘organized crime’ in Canada, engaging the possibility of a definition of ‘aboriginal organized crime’ and the proposal of a ‘typology’ of participants. In the development of both the definition and typology, the researchers build upon Beare's definition of organized crime to include the dimension of motivations—whether social, political or economic—which theorists agree are crucial in understanding organized crime activities, but which do not appear in current definitions of the term, as well as important contextual factors informing participation in aboriginal organized crime networks.

Combating Organized Crime in (and by) the Private Sector

This article explores the role of the forensic investigative firm in combating the involvement of organized crime in Canada's private sector. Although the onus for organized crime enforcement has fallen exclusively on the shoulders of the state, there is a potentially meaningful role for the largest of these firms to play. This role is based on the resources and expertise of the forensic investigative industry, including former police investigators, professional researchers, forensic accountants, intelligence analysts, industry experts, a national and international structure, and an ongoing auditing and consulting relationship with industries vulnerable to organized crime. The optimal role of the forensic investigative firm is a preventive one. This includes working with industries to determine the nature and scope of the problem and helping them develop preventive polices and programs. This preventive role would complement the largely reactive role of public police in organized crime enforcement in this country.
