The Indian automotive industry is having a rich legacy and cultural background with big players like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, etc. However, when compared to global multinational players like Volvo, Daimler, Scania, MAN, Toyota, etc., the implementation of world class technology is lagging. Visualizing this for sustaining in the ever-increasing competition, the Indian automotive industry is looking forward towards the benchmarking and implementation of the manufacturing and quality techniques, guidelines, standards and polices followed in the global manufacturing companies and has termed the same as world class quality (WCQ). The main objective of the paper is to determine the relationship between world class quality practices and improvement in operational performance of Indian automotive company after implementation of the same.In this paper, we have tried to benchmark the standard practices followed in world class automotive industries in terms of quality management system (QMS) and have made suggestions to improve the working structure and productivity. To achieve this, several tools like OEMs’ quality system and process benchmarking is done through online survey, one to one discussion, third party assistance, determining the benefits and challenges of adopting WCQ practices, etc. to define WCQ glide path and pillars/principles and describing the implementation processes. Level wise impact is checked before and after implementation of WCQ which focuses on “First Time Right Capability”, strengthening of design verification process (4D-DFA, DFS, DFM & DFMEA) and “Quality is not act, it is a habit”. The study adopted a descriptive cross sectional design which was appropriate because of conclusions that used objective measures and made generalizations possible based on the information provided at the time of enquiry. The overall working productivity enhancement was analyzed and suggestion to the management for the implementation of the same was done.
