Mapping temperate old-growth forests in Central Europe using ALS and Sentinel-2A multispectral data

Old-growth forests are essential to preserve biodiversity and play an important role in sequestering carbon and mitigating climate change. However, their existence across Europe is vulnerable due to the scarcity of their distribution, logging, and environmental threats. Therefore, providing the current status of old-growth forests across Europe is essential to aiding informed conservation efforts and sustainable forest management. Remote sensing techniques have proven effective for mapping and monitoring forests over large areas. However, relying solely on remote sensing spectral or structural information cannot capture comprehensive horizontal and vertical structure complexity profiles associated with old-growth forest characteristics. To overcome this issue, we combined spectral information from Sentinel-2A multispectral imagery with 3D structural information from high-density point clouds of airborne laser scanning (ALS) imagery to map old-growth forests over an extended area. Four features from the ALS data and fifteen from Sentinel-2A comprising raw band (spectral reflectance), vegetation indices (VIs), and texture were selected to create three datasets used in the classification process using the random forest algorithm. The results demonstrated that combining ALS and Sentinel-2A features improved the classification performance and yielded the highest accuracy for old-growth class, with an F1-score of 92% and producer’s and user’s accuracies of 93% and 90%, respectively. The findings suggest that features from ALS and Sentinel-2A data sensitive to forest structure are essential for identifying old-growth forests. Integrating open-access satellite imageries, such as Sentinel-2A and ALS data, can benefit forest managers, stakeholders, and conservationists in monitoring old-growth forest preservation across a broader spatial extent.

Incomplete recovery of tree community composition and rare species after 120 years of tropical forest succession in Panama.

Determining how fully tropical forests regenerating on abandoned land recover characteristics of old-growth forests is increasingly important for understanding their role in conserving rare species and maintaining ecosystem services. Despite this, our understanding of forest structure and community composition recovery throughout succession is incomplete, as many tropical chronosequences do not extend beyond the first 50 years of succession. Here, we examined trajectories of forest recovery across eight 1-hectare plots in middle and later stages of forest succession (40-120 years) and five 1-hectare old-growth plots, in the Barro Colorado Nature Monument (BCNM), Panama. We first verified that forest age had a greater effect than edaphic or topographic variation on forest structure, diversity and composition and then corroborated results from smaller plots censused 20 years previously. Tree species diversity (but not species richness) and forest structure had fully recovered to old-growth levels by 40 and 90 years, respectively. However, rare species were missing, and old-growth specialists were in low abundance, in the mid- and late secondary forest plots, leading to incomplete recovery of species composition even by 120 years into succession. We also found evidence that dominance early in succession by a long-lived pioneer led to altered forest structure and delayed recovery of species diversity and composition well past a century after land abandonment. Our results illustrate the critical importance of old-growth and old secondary forests for biodiversity conservation, given that recovery of community composition may take several centuries, particularly when a long-lived pioneer dominates in early succession. DIET COMPOSITON OF FISHERS (PEKANIA PENNANTI) REINTRODUCED ON THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA, WASHINGTON

Knowledge of diet composition can inform management strategies and efforts to recover endangered carnivore populations in vacant portions of their historic ranges. One such species, the Fisher (Pekania pennanti), was extirpated in Washington State prior to any formal documentation of its food habits in the coastal coniferous forests of western Washington. Fisher recovery efforts in Washington, based on translocating Fishers from extant populations, have been ongoing since 2008, beginning with the release of 90 Fishers on Washington's Olympic Peninsula from 2008 to 2010. We collected fecal samples or digestive tracts from 13 Fishers opportunistically on the Olympic Peninsula from 2009 through 2013. Subsequently, we identified the species composition of each sample's contents to determine the primary foods consumed by the reintroduced Fishers. Fisher diets were diverse and dominated by mammalian prey. Contents of feces and digestive tracts of Fishers were composed primarily of Snowshoe Hare (Lepus americanus) remains, followed by lesser proportions of Mountain Beavers (Aplodontia rufa), Northern Flying Squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus), Douglas Squirrels (Tamiasciurus douglasii), Southern Red-backed Voles (Myodes gapperi), shrews (Sorex spp.), and unidentified ungulate species. The diet of Fishers comprised species that occur across a wide range of land uses and management prescriptions, including previously logged forests and mature forests that have been set aside for retention of old-growth forest characteristics. Additional study of prey abundance and Fisher foraging behaviors related to structural habitat characteristics across a gradient of land uses would provide useful insights for enhancing the effectiveness of conservation efforts to benefit Fishers in Pacific Northwest coastal forests.

Second-growth redwood forest responses to restoration treatments

Following 20th century logging, much of the natural coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D.Don.] Endl.) range consists of dense second-growth stands with slow tree growth and low biodiversity. There is a landscape-scale effort in much of coastal northern California to increase tree growth rates and ecosystem biodiversity via thinning treatments, thereby hopefully accelerating the development of old-growth forest characteristics. Redwood National Park has been experimenting with thinning in these forest types since the 1970s. This study investigated short- (1 year post-thinning) and long-term (40 years post-thinning) responses of redwood physiology (water potential and stomatal conductance), redwood growth (via tree-rings), and forest biodiversity (understory plants, birds, and mammals) to restoration thinning treatments. We found that thinning second-growth redwood forests with 40% basal area reduction treatments 1) did not meaningfully influence tree water potential, 2) increased tree stomatal conductance in the short-term, 3) increased tree growth in the long-term, 4) increased understory plant diversity, and 5) did not affect bird or mammal diversity. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that thinning second-growth redwood forests has the potential to accelerate the development of old-growth characteristics. This verification of the efficacy of restoration treatments is important information for land managers, as plans are currently underway to apply these treatments at the landscape-scale. This study can provide useful baseline data to aid future assessments of long-term forest responses to contemporary restoration efforts.

Greenish Warbler (Phylloscopus trochiloides viridanus): An overlooked indicator of old-growth forest?

Effective bioindicators of old-growth forest are important for conservation. The Greenish Warbler (Phylloscopus trochiloides viridanus), a forest-dwelling passerine, has been recorded in old-growth forests; however, its precise habitat preferences are poorly studied. We used opportunistic observations collected by citizen scientists and stand descriptions from a forestry database to analyse its habitat preferences in Estonia, with a focus on the characteristics of old-growth forests. The Greenish Warbler preferred productive spruce and black alder stands but also favoured rare broad-leaved stands. Forest stands were older, less drained and contained more standing and fallen dead trees in warbler sites than in control sites. Positive effects of stand age and soil fertility exhibited the highest average relative importance in generalized linear models, drainage was of intermediate importance and the occurrence of dead wood was least important. The terrain at warbler sites was also more often uneven than that at control sites. The preference for old-growth forests observed in our study makes the Greenish Warbler, despite occupying various forest stands suggestive of plasticity, a good candidate for inclusion in a suite of old-growth forest indicators.

Trade-offs between ecosystem service provision and the predisposition to disturbances: a NFI-based scenario analysis

BackgroundScenario analyses that evaluate management effects on the long-term provision and sustainability of forest ecosystem services and biodiversity (ESB) also need to account for disturbances. The objectives of this study were to reveal potential trade-offs and synergies between ESB provision and disturbance predisposition at the scale of a whole country.MethodsThe empirical scenario model MASSIMO was used to simulate forest development and management from years 2016 to 2106 on 5086 sample plots of the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI). We included a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario and four scenarios of increased timber harvesting. Model output was evaluated with indicators for 1) ESB provision including a) timber production, b) old-growth forest characteristics as biodiversity proxies and c) protection against rockfall and avalanches and 2) for a) storm and b) bark beetle predisposition.ResultsThe predisposition indicators corresponded well (AUC: 0.71–0.86) to storm and insect (mostly bark beetle) damage observations in logistic regression models. Increased timber production was generally accompanied with decreased predisposition (storm: >−11%, beetle: >−37%, depending on region and scenario), except for a scenario that promoted conifers where beetle predisposition increased (e.g. + 61% in the Southern Alps). Decreased disturbance predisposition and decreases in old-growth forest indicators in scenarios of increased timber production revealed a trade-off situation. In contrast, growing stock increased under BAU management along with a reduction in conifer proportions, resulting in a reduction of beetle predisposition that in turn was accompanied by increasing old-growth forest indicators. Disturbance predisposition was elevated in NFI plots with high avalanche and rockfall protection value.ConclusionsBy evaluating ESB and disturbance predisposition based on single-tree data at a national scale we bridged a gap between detailed, stand-scale assessments and broader inventory-based approaches at the national scale. We discuss the limitations of the indicator framework and advocate for future amendments that include climate-sensitive forest development and disturbance modelling to strengthen decision making in national forest policy making.

The legacy of management approaches and abandonment on old-growth attributes in hardwood floodplain forests in the Pannonian Ecoregion

In the absence of primeval floodplain forests, near-natural remnants are key references for close-to-nature forestry and nature conservation. Old-growth forest characteristics (OGCs) were quantified in 16 managed (rotation or selection) and abandoned semi-natural floodplain forests by taking snapshot inventories of structural features. Principal component analysis revealed a short gradient from closed-canopy managed stands dominated by large trees (mainly oaks) and hornbeams, with less deadwood, to abandoned older stands with more gaps, very large trees and different kinds of deadwood. All the studied forests are mainly in the early and late biostatic phases of forest development, with innovation and degradation phases almost completely absent. Results showed that selection forests had significantly more very large trees compared to rotation stands. The difference in structure between abandoned selection stands and abandoned rotation stands was more pronounced than in their counterparts that are still managed. Based on diameter distribution and the amount of very large trees and deadwood, abandoned selection stands were closest to the structure of natural forests. Selection forests may recover certain OGCs more rapidly than rotation forests. We concluded that after 100–150 years of homogenising rotation forestry, OGCs are slow to develop in just 25 years of non-intervention. Based on our results, we recommend: (i) an increase in the rotation cycle with selective logging in order to restore and maintain OGCs in managed rotation forests and (ii) total abandonment in certain well-preserved, near-natural forests with natural flooding regimes. However, the failure of oak to regenerate naturally remains a challenge.

Incorporating Insect and Wind Disturbances in a Natural Disturbance-Based Management Framework for the Boreal Forest

Natural disturbances are fundamental to forest ecosystem dynamics and have been used for two decades to improve forest management, notably in the boreal forest. Initially based on fire regimes, there is now a need to extend the concept to include other types of disturbances as they can greatly contribute to forest dynamics in some regions of the boreal zone. Here we review the main descriptors—that is, the severity, specificity, spatial and temporal descriptors and legacies, of windthrow and spruce bud worm outbreak disturbance regimes in boreal forests—in order to facilitate incorporating them into a natural disturbance-based forest management framework. We also describe the biological legacies that are generated by these disturbances. Temporal and spatial descriptors characterising both disturbance types are generally variable in time and space. This makes them difficult to reproduce in an ecosystem management framework. However, severity and specificity descriptors may provide a template upon which policies for maintaining post harvesting and salvage logging biological legacies can be based. In a context in which management mainly targets mature and old-growth stages, integrating insect and wind disturbances in a management framework is an important goal, as these disturbances contribute to creating heterogeneity in mature and old-growth forest characteristics.

Arthropod Diversity and Functional Importance in Old-Growth Forests of North America

Old-growth forests have become rare in North America but provide habitat for unique assemblages of species that often are rare in younger forests. Insects and related arthropods reach their highest diversity in old-growth forests because of their stable moderate temperature and relative humidity and the rich variety of resources represented by high plant species richness and structural complexity. Old-growth arthropod assemblages typically are distinct from those in younger, managed forests. Major subcommunities include the arboreal community that is composed of a rich assemblage of herbivores, fungivores, and their associated predators and parasitoids that function to regulate primary production and nutrient fluxes, the stem zone community that includes bark- and wood-boring species and their associated predators and parasitoids that initiate the decomposition of coarse woody debris, and the forest floor community composed of a variety of detritivores, fungivores, burrowers, and their associated predators and parasitoids that are instrumental in litter decomposition. Insect outbreaks are relatively rare in old-growth forests, where the diversity of resources and predators limit population growth. In turn, insects contribute to plant diversity and limit primary production of host plant species, thereby promoting development of old-growth forest characteristics. Arthropods also provide important functions in decomposition and nutrient cycling that may be lost in younger, managed forests with limited provision of coarse woody debris and accumulated litter. Protection of remnant old-growth forests within the forest matrix may be particularly valuable for maintaining the diversity of plant and arthropod predators that can minimize outbreaks, thereby contributing to resilience to changing environmental conditions.

Relationships between Psychidae communities (Lepidoptera: Tineoidea) and the ecological characteristics of old-growth forests in a beech dominated landscape

Several studies address the question of which forest attributes are most important for the conservation of biodiversity. Unfortunately, there are no unequivocal answers because the response of a biological group to changes in forest structure depends on its natural history and scale of organization. It is important to increase our knowledge of the potential relationships between under studied groups of species and forest variables in order to adopt timber harvesting strategies not detrimental to biodiversity, especially in old-growth forests. We assessed the importance of 10 forest attributes and old-growth for Psychidae (Lepidoptera) species and communities. Research was carried out in 12 forest stands in a mountainous beech dominated landscape in southern Italy, in the middle of the Mediterranean Basin. Samples were collected in 2001 and 2013 and data were merged after pairwise comparison analyses that confirmed the long term stability of communities. Correspondence Analysis, Cluster Analysis and non-parametric Spearman Rank Order Correlation were used to identify determinants of Psychidae abundance and diversity. We collected 2,732 Psychidae belonging to 8 species. Correspondence analysis identified old-growth as the main determinant of communities. Most significant attributes for individual species were beech dominance, diameter at breast height and its standard deviation. For Taleporia defoliella there were positive correlations with these forest parameters, whereas for Psyche crassiorella the correlations were negative. This study underlined the importance of forest attributes associated with old-growth forests for sustaining biodiversity. These findings indicate the need to incorporate these attributes in forest planning, especially those aspects that are easily recognizable such as the number of large trees.

Airborne laser scanning based identification and interpretation on ecologically important old-growth forest habitats in natural conservation areas

Over the last decades, accurate and cost efficient remote sensing techniques in large-scale forest inventories have developed rapidly. In particular, the airborne laser scanning (ALS) has provided new possibilities to quickly and accurately monitor forest ecosystems over large areas. ALS provides three-dimensional data on forest structure and basic forest characteristics (e.g. wood volume per hectare) with good accuracy. Currently, ALS is already applied in the stand level management inventory in many countries. However, the applicability of ALS to detect more rare items and forest characteristics has not yet been entirely assessed. My study focuses on these uncommon forest characteristics and tests the potential of ALS to facilitate biodiversity inventories. Boreal forest stands with high herbaceous plant species diversity, large European aspen (Populus tremula L.) individuals, and old-growth forest canopy gaps have been found to be important biodiversity characteristics in western taiga forests. The field inventories of these forest structures are often time-consuming and, therefore, the inventory methods in various scales should be developed to improve their conservation and management. In this thesis I developed and evaluated ALS based methods to identify the old-growth forest characteristics. All the data were collected from Koli National Park (Koli NP) in eastern Finland. The data used in this thesis included 274 mature forest stands belonging to five different forest site types and varying in size. The spatial and temporal patterns of the chosen biodiversity characteristics were investigated. The longevity of aspen stands was studied based on multi-source data. About one-third of the old-growth forest areas of the Koli NP contained large aspen trees that persisted throughout the period between 1910 and 2004. The results show that aspen can maintain long-term occurrence in old-growth forests and that the species is not only transient or confined to early successional stages. The ALS was used to identify herb-rich forest stands. ALS was capable of distinguishing herb-rich forests from less fertile site types with an accuracy of 88.9%. This was mainly based on the vertical vegetation profiles that characterize forests on high fertility sites. The best overall classification accuracy achieved for all the forest site types was 58.0%. As a basis on earlier studies canopy gaps can be located using ALS data. I found clear differences between the canopy gaps of natural forests and managed forests. In addition, both the density of vegetation and amount of coarse woody debris are utilizable characteristics in the ALS data-based identification of canopy gaps. In the large-scale forest inventories ALS-data proved to be a useful technology for the identification of several forest characteristics related to biodiversity in old-growth boreal sites. In particular, locating the herb-rich stands was found to be accurate.

Patterns of plant community structure within and among primary and second-growth northern hardwood forest stands

Forest scientists advocate the use of natural disturbance-based forest management for restoring the characteristics of old-growth forests to younger second-growth northern hardwood stands. However, prescriptions rely upon studies that have (1) not spanned the full range of conditions and species assemblages, and (2) focused primarily on contrasting old-growth and mature second-growth stands at a single scale. To examine how the legacy of historical logging activities influences forest structure and function, we compared and contrasted patterns of plant community structure within and among second-growth and primary stands on the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, USA — near the current range limits of the dominant species, sugar maple ( Acer saccharum). We expected second-growth stands to be in younger developmental stages, and structurally less heterogeneous both within and among stands. Furthermore, we expected those differences to be associated with patterns of plant community composition and diversity. Three of the four primary stands and one of the eight second-growth stands were in the old-growth stage of development. Yellow birch ( Betula alleghaniensis) and conifers as a group ( Thuja occidentalis, Picea glauca and Abies balsamea) were more abundant, and yellow birch was more variable, within primary stands than second-growth stands. The volume and heterogeneity of coarse woody debris in intermediate decay- and size classes was also greater within and among primary stands relative to second-growth stands. While mean subplot richness of overstory tree species was greater in primary stands, mean quadrat richness, and rates of species accumulation for forest herbs as well as total herbaceous cover, and graminoid cover were greater in second-growth stands. Furthermore, total basal area (BA), the BA of conifer species, the density of yellow birch trees, understory vegetation and light transmittance were more variable among second-growth stands. At the multivariate level, primary stands were distinguished from second-growth stands not by differences in stand structure, but by a greater abundance of yellow birch and conifer species in the canopy, which was also related to O-horizon depth and understory plant species composition and structure. Differences in community structure between primary and second-growth stands may have resulted from the original cutover as well as high-grade logging, which together may have disrupted the mechanisms that maintain populations of important co-dominant tree species and associated understory plant communities in northern hardwood stands.

THE INFLUENCE OF SUCCESSIONAL PROCESSES AND DISTURBANCE ON THE STRUCTURE OF TSUGA CANADENSIS FORESTS

Old-growth forests are valuable sources of ecological, conservation, and management information, yet these ecosystems have received little study in New England, due in large part to their regional scarcity. To increase our understanding of the structures and processes common in these rare forests, we studied the abundance of downed coarse woody debris (CWD) and snags and live-tree size-class distributions in 16 old-growth hemlock forests in western Massachusetts. Old-growth stands were compared with eight adjacent second-growth hemlock forests to gain a better understanding of the structural differences between these two classes of forests resulting from contrasting histories. In addition, we used stand-level dendroecological reconstructions to investigate the linkages between disturbance history and old-growth forest structure using an information-theoretic model selection framework. Old-growth stands exhibit a much higher degree of structural complexity than second-growth forests. In particular, old-growth stands had larger overstory trees and greater volumes of downed coarse woody debris (135.2 vs. 33.2 m3/ha) and snags (21.2 vs. 10.7 m3/ha). Second-growth stands were characterized by either skewed unimodal or reverse-J shaped diameter distributions, while old-growth forests contained bell-shaped, skewed unimodal, rotated sigmoid, and reverse J-shaped distributions. The variation in structural attributes among old-growth stands, particularly the abundance of downed CWD, was closely related to disturbance history. In particular, old-growth stands experiencing moderate levels of canopy disturbance during the last century (1930s and 1980s) had greater accumulations of CWD, highlighting the importance of gap-scale disturbances in shaping the long-term development and structural characteristics of old-growth forests. These findings are important for the development of natural disturbance-based silvicultural systems that may be used to restore important forest characteristics lacking in New England second-growth stands by integrating structural legacies of disturbance (e.g., downed CWD) and resultant tree-size distribution patterns. This silvicultural approach would emulate the often episodic nature of CWD recruitment within old-growth forests.

A note on the ecology and management of old-growth forests in the Montane Cordillera

The Montane Cordillera ecozone that spans British Columbia's central and southern interior and a portion of southwestern Alberta contains the greatest variety of old-growth coniferous forest types in Canada. The diverse climates of this region, which include some of the driest, warmest, wettest, and coldest found in southern continental Canada, have directly contributed to the richness of old forest types. Associated with this range in climatic conditions are radically different natural disturbance regimes that have profoundly influenced the distribution, abundance, and structural characteristics of old-growth forests. Old forests tend to be more abundant and to contain more old-growth-dependent organisms in wetter climates. The high number of old-growth-dependent epiphytic lichens in old inland rainforests is a clear expression of this phenomenon. Conversely, old forests are much less abundant in dry landscapes. These forests, often dominated by Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa P. Laws. ex C. Laws.) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), have been subject to more frequent natural disturbances, and have been more profoundly influenced by human activities. Although fewer species appear to be dependent on old growth in dry forests, a number of them require certain old-growth structural attributes for their survival. A better understanding of the ecological characteristics of the old-growth forests of Canada's Montane Cordillera will assist in developing informed land-use decisions. Characteristics of Old-Growth Forests Associated with Northern Spotted Owls in Olympic National Park

The relationship between northern spotted owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) and old-growth fores is well established, but there are few studies indicating which particular characteristics of these forests are most important to spotted owls. Thus, we compared characteristics of forests at owl response and non-response sites across Olympic National Park to identify the specific features which best predict daytime presence of northern spotted owls in relatively pristine forest. At 32 owl response sites and 230 non-response sites we measured 9 structural and species composition variables thought to be important to spotted owls. Based on these variables, we used stepwise logistic regression to develop models predicting the presence or absence of spotted owls
