Antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and antiviral investigations using egyptian phoenix dactylifera L. pits extract

Phoenix dactylifera L. and its wastes are known to be high in nutrients that are beneficial to human health. The study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and antiviral properties of Phoenix dactylifera L. pits extract (PDPE) in vitro. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis indicated phenol, 2,5-bis(1,1-dimethyl ethyl), tetradecanoic acid, octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, á-D-glucopyranosiduronic acid, and heptaethylene glycol monododecyl ether existence. The PDPE influenced pathogenic microorganisms, with inhibition zone diameters (IZDs) ranging from 10.0 to 35.0 mm. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 5638 had the highest IZD, while Salmonella typhi DSM 17058 and Shigella sonnei DSM 5570 had the lowest. The antifungal effect observed only in spore failure or conidia formation. PDPE showed a 100% antibacterial spectrum against bacteria, with MIC values between 250 and 1000 µg/ml. MIC was only indicated with S. aureus of 500 µg/ml. MBC values ranged from 500 to 1000 g/ml, with MBC values of 500 g/ml for B. cereus, E. faecalis, S. typhi, and S. sonnei. The activity was 66.7% at 500 µg/ml, further concentrations of 125–250 g/ml had no antibacterial effect. PDPE biofilm inhibition % had the highest percentage of inhibition (98.59%) with S. aureus, B. cereus (94.12%), and E. coli (74.46%). With 50% (CC50) viral activity, the highest non-toxic PDPE dose was found to be at 123.0 µg/ml.

Herbicidal activity of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) extracts on Amaranthus spinosus L.

Environmentally friendly weed control is highly recommended to be implemented in agriculture. The objective of this research was to assess the herbicidal efficacy of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts derived from the tuber of Cyperus rotundus L. on Amaranthus spinosus L. The tuber was consecutively extricated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. These extracts were given to A. spinosus in pot culture at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%.The herbicide (2,4-D at 0.686 kg a.i. ha−1) and distilled water were acted as positive and negative controls. The extract had variable effects on weed control percentage, leaf area, root length, shoot and root dry weight of A. spinosus. Major compounds in GC-MS in n-hexane of C. rotundus extract were: 7-Isopropenyl-1, 4a- dimethy l-4,4a,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-3H-naphthalen-2-one (19.60%), phthalic acid (7%), dibutyl phthalate (3.97%); in ethyl acetat extract were propanetriol, 1-acetate (37,40%) and 7 Isopropenyl-1,4a-dimethyl-4,4a,5,6,7,8-hexahyro-3H-naphthalen-2-one (6.42%); in methanol extract were d-glycero-d-ido-heptose (21.31%) and octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (39.15%). The 20% of those extracts causing 53.33%, 64.33% and 55.33 destruction of A. spinosus respectively at 14 Days After Aplication. Thus, ethyl acetate is the most potent herbicide extract to be developed as an agent against A. spinosus.

Enhanced Kinetics of Oxygen Reduction Reactions in Alkaline Solutions inside Mesoporous Electrodes

Oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in alkaline solutions attract increasing attention for their use as the cathodic reaction in metal-air batteries and alkaline fuel cells. However, the commercialization of these systems is impeded by high activation and concentration overpotentials of ORR, which originate from the sluggish kinetics on the catalyst surface and oxygen transport in the electrolyte, respectively. Although the practical electrode enables a decrease of the overpotentials with the porous structure, the effect of inner pores has not been understood. Among various pore sizes, it is crucial to investigate an electrochemical behavior in mesopores with a size of a few nm since such confined structures possibly change the intrinsic catalytic kinetics.1 In this study, we evaluated the ORR activity in the mesopore using Pt model electrodes with arrays of cylindrical pores with uniform pore sizes (Fig. a). We investigated the activity dependence on the electrode thickness to separate activation and concentration overpotentials, and found that the activation overpotential inside the mesopore with a size of 1.8 nm is smaller than that measured with the planer electrode. Pt model electrodes were electrodeposited from platinum salt in a liquid crystalline phase of a surfactant.2 The liquid crystalline phase was obtained by mixing 29 wt% of H2O, 29 wt% of hexachloroplatinic acid, and 42 wt% of octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether. The three-electrode cell consisted of an Au disk (φ 4 mm) working electrode, a Pt wire counter electrode, and an Ag|AgCl|sat’d KClaq reference electrode. The deposition was conducted at –0.055 V and 25 °C, and the charge densities were adjusted to obtain the electrode thickness of ca. 45, 100, 380, and 900 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was performed to observe the pore structure. Electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and ORR activities were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry in N2/O2-saturated 0.1 mol dm–3 KOH solutions with a rotating disk electrode system, consisting of the porous model or a polished planar Pt working electrode, a Pt wire counter electrode, and a Hg|HgO reference electrode. The scan rate and rotation speed were 20 mV s–1 and 2000 rpm, respectively. TEM image exhibits the honeycomb arrays of mesopores with a pore size of 1.8 nm and a pore distance of 4.9 nm (Fig. a). The model electrodes possessed polycrystalline facets, and ECSA was calculated from the hydrogen adsorption peak area in blank voltammetry (Fig. b). The ECSA matched closely with the geometrically calculated surface area, suggesting that the cylindrical pores are uniformly distributed on the electrodes with defined pore lengths (Fig. c). ORR activities were evaluated with the Tafel plots (Fig. d), with current densities corrected for ECSA and concentration overpotential outside the mesopores. Since the oxygen transport resistance or the concentration overpotential is higher in longer pores, the electrodes with longer pore lengths caused smaller ORR current densities. In contrast, the concentration overpotential was suppressed enough to extract the activation overpotential when the pore length was 45 nm and 100 nm, and these electrodes led to higher ORR current density than the planar electrode. The result indicates that the activation overpotential inside the mesopore with a size of 1.8 nm is smaller than that measured with the planer electrode. We will report the origin of the enhanced kinetics inside the mesopore from the viewpoint of the electronic structure change.

Janus Nanoparticle and Surfactant Effects on Oil Drop Migration in Water under Shear.

The effects of surface-active nanoparticles and surfactants on the behavior of oil-water interfaces have implications for a variety of industrial processes related to multiphase flows including separation processes, enhanced oil recovery, and environmental remediation. In this work, the migration of an oil droplet in shear flow is investigated with the presence of surface-active molecules and nanoparticles at the oil-water interface. Pure oil (heptadecane) in water and oil with the presence of Janus nanoparticles (JPs) and/or octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, a nonionic surfactant, were examined using coarse-grained computations. The shear flow field was created utilizing a Couette flow, where the top wall of a channel moved with a specified velocity and the bottom wall was kept stationary. The dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method was applied. The oil drop was placed on the stationary wall, and its displacement was recorded over time. When surfactants were added at the oil-water interface, the slip of the water over the oil drop was reduced, leading to a larger displacement of the drop. Moreover, surfactant molecules tended to concentrate toward the rear side of the oil drop rather than the front as the drop moved in the flow field. The presence of only JPs on the oil-water interface resulted in slower droplet migration. In the presence of both JPs and surfactants, the effect of JPs on the oil-surfactant-water system was investigated by changing the number of JPs on the drop surface while keeping the concentration of the surfactant constant. Under the same shear rate, the droplet's migration speed increased in the presence of both surfactants and JPs compared to the case of bare oil. The JPs appeared to follow a repeated pattern of motion while residing close to the solid substrate-oil drop contact line. These findings elucidate the contribution of both surfactants and JPs on oil drop displacement for enhanced oil recovery or remediation of an oil-contaminated subsurface.

Coarse Grained Modeling of Multiphase Flows with Surfactants.

Coarse-grained modeling methods allow simulations at larger scales than molecular dynamics, making it feasible to simulate multifluid systems. It is, however, critical to use model parameters that represent the fluid properties with fidelity under both equilibrium and dynamic conditions. In this work, dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) methods were used to simulate the flow of oil and water in a narrow slit under Poiseuille and Couette flow conditions. Large surfactant molecules were also included in the computations. A systematic methodology is presented to determine the DPD parameters necessary for ensuring that the boundary conditions were obeyed, that the oil and water viscosities were represented correctly, and that the velocity profile for the multifluid system agreed with the theoretical expectations. Surfactant molecules were introduced at the oil–water interface (sodium dodecylsulfate and octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether) to determine the effects of surface-active molecules on the two-phase flow. A critical shear rate was found for Poiseuille flow, beyond which the surfactants desorbed to form the interface forming micelles and destabilize the interface, and the surfactant-covered interface remained stable under Couette flow even at high shear rates.

In vitro Antioxidant and Anticholinesterase Activities of Senecio massaicus Essential Oil and Its Molecular Docking Studies as a Potential Inhibitor of Covid-19 and Alzheimer’s Diseases

The composition of the essential oil obtained from the dried aerial parts of Senecio massaicus was analyzed by GC/MS. Twenty-two components have been identified and represented 97.41 % of the total oil composition. The major constituents of the essential oil were m-cymene (30.58 %), n-hexadecanoic acid (14.88 %) and docosane-11-decyl (10.43 %). Four methods were used to determine the antioxidant activity: DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC and reducing power assay. The results indicate that the essential oil extract has moderate to low activity compared to the reference antioxidant compounds. In vitro anticholinesterase activity of the essential oil has also been studied. It exhibited higher inhibitory activity against butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) than against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Docking studies conducted for Alzheimer's disease-related enzymes have displayed that compounds docosane-11-decyl and octaethyleneglycol monododecyl ether have strong potency, and compounds 15,15’Bi1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxacyclohexadecane and n-Hexadecanoic acid have moderate inhibitory potential. In addition, these three compounds (Docosane-11-decyl, octaethyleneglycol monododecyl ether and 15,15’Bi1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxacyclohexadecane) of the essential oil displayed strong interaction against SARS-CoV-2 main protease and Nsp15 endoribonuclease. Therefore, it could be useful to provide anticholinesterase agent and anti-coronavirus candidate drugs.

Dynamic orientation control of bimolecular electron transfer at charged micelle surfaces.

Visible light excitation of the neutral complex [RuII(phen)2(bps)]0 (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, bps = 4,7-biphenylsulfonate-1,10-phenanthroline) results in the formation of a triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited state with a lifetime, τo, of 4.6 µs, where the promoted electron is localized on the bps ligand, 3*[RuIII(phen)2(bps•-)]0. The complex is dynamically quenched by di-n-heptyl-viologen, C7C7V2+, in solution and when the acceptor is embedded into negatively charged and neutral micelles. Addition of NaCl to solutions containing C7C7V2+ bound to negatively charged dodecyl sulfate sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles results in a monotonic increase in the quenching rate constant from kq = 6.0 × 107 to 1.7 × 109 M-1 s-1. In contrast, kq was independent of [NaCl] and diffusion limited in water and neutral micellar solution. Activated rate constants, kact, revealed that electron transfer was slowed by a factor of 450 when occurring in negatively charged micelle solution relative to neutral octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8) micelles. In the 3*[RuIII(phen)2(bps•-)]0 excited state, the bps ligand is oriented away from the anionic micelle surface potential, -141 ≤ ψ ≤ -67 mV, due to a Frumkin effect operative in the deceleration of kact. Frumkin corrected rate constants were within a factor of three of those measured in C12E8 solution. Distance-dependent reorganization energies resulting from the orientation vary from 0.47 eV to 0.35 eV, while electronic coupling decreases by a factor of 10. The collective data show that orientation control over bimolecular rate constants in micellar solution can be achieved by screening micellar surface charges.

Unfolding and partial refolding of a cellulase from the SDS-denatured state: From β-sheet to α-helix and back

Globular proteins are typically unfolded by SDS to form protein-decorated micelle-like structures. Several proteins have been shown subsequently to refold by addition of the nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8). Thus SDS converts β-lactoglobulin, which has mainly β-sheet secondary structure, into a state rich in α-helicality, while addition of C12E8 leads to refolding and recovery of the original β-sheet structure. Here we extend these studies to the large β-sheet-rich cellulase Cel7b from Humicola insolens whose enzymatic activity provides a very sensitive refolding parameter. The enzymes widespread usage in the detergent industry makes it an obvious model system for protein-surfactant interactions. SDS-unfolding and subsequent refolding using C12E8 were investigated at pH 4.2 using near- and far-UV circular dichroism (CD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and activity measurements. The Cel7b:SDS complex can be described as a random configuration of 3–4 connected core-shell structures in which the protein is converted to a mainly α-helical secondary structure. Addition of C12E8 recovers almost all the secondary structure, part of the tertiary structure, about 50% of the activity and dissociates part of the protein population completely from detergent micelles. The lack of complete refolding may be due to charge neutralisation of Cel7b by SDS, kinetically trapping the enzyme into aggregated structures. In support of this, aggregates did not form when C12E8 was first mixed with Cel7b followed by addition of SDS. Formation of such aggregates may be a general phenomenon hampering quantitative refolding from the SDS-denatured state.

Molecular dynamics study of solubilization of cyclohexane, benzene, and phenol into mixed micelles composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate and octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether.

Molecular dynamics calculations of a mixed micelle composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12 E8 ) were performed for six compositions (SDS/C12 E8 = 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80, and 0/100) to investigate the composition dependence of the mixed micelle structure and solubilization of cyclohexane, benzene, and phenol molecules by the micelle. The radial density distribution of the hydrophilic polyoxyethylene (POE) group of C12 E8 as a function of distance from the micelle center is very sharp for micelles with high SDS content because the POE group captures a Na+ ion in solution and wraps around it to form a compact crown-ether-like complex. The hydrophobic dodecyl groups of SDS and C12 E8 were separately distributed in the mixed micelle core. ΔG(r) evaluated for each solute showed that despite the structural changes of the micelle the binding strength of the solute molecules to the micelle did not change significantly. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Markov Chain Modeling of Surfactant Critical Micelle Concentration and Surface Composition.

A Markov chain (MC) model has been used to model the following binary surfactant mixtures: linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS4)/octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8) at 10 and 25 °C, LAS6/acidic sophorolipid (AS), C12Betaine/C12Maltoside, sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES2)/C12E8, and rhamnolipid (R1)/LAS6. The critical micellar concentration and the composition of the adsorbed layer, for each system, can be modeled using the same monomer reactivity ratio values, g1 and g2. This implies that the interactions between the surfactants in the bulk solution and at the interface are the same, within error. For the LAS4/C12E8 system at 25 °C, the ranges of g1 and g2 values which can model both sets of data are within 0.03-0.05 and 1.55-2.10, respectively; g1 ≪ g2 implies that C12E8 is significantly more surface active than LAS4. The MC model indicates a negative change in the free energy upon mixing for all of the surfactant systems, consistent with the literature. The interfacial mixing behavior of LAS4/SLES2 is inferred from the results of the MC analysis of the LAS4/C12E8 and SLES2/C12E8 systems, which share a common surfactant partner in C12E8, and the prediction is in line with the published data.

Modification of Oil–Water Interfaces by Surfactant-Stabilized Carbon Nanotubes

In this research, simulation results for using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to deliver surfactants to an oil–water interface are reported. Two different surfactants were considered, the anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8). The surfactants were first allowed to adsorb on the CNT surface in an aqueous environment. It was found that the capacities of SDS and C12E8 to adsorb on the CNT were 2.62 and 2.43 molecules/nm2, respectively. The electrostatic effect of the anionic surfactant and the steric effect of the nonionic surfactant negatively affected the adsorption process. On the oil–water interface, the surfactant molecules quickly desorbed from the CNT to distribute on the interface, leading to the reduction of the oil–water interfacial tension. At a low surfactant concentration, the CNT also remained on the interface, reducing further the interfacial tension. Location of Solvated Probe Molecules Within Nonionic Surfactant Micelles Using Molecular Dynamics

An iconic textbook that pharmaceutical scientists encounter in undergraduate courses is “Martin’s Physical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.” Within the chapter on Colloids, a figure indicates the location of solubilization of molecules within spherical, nonionic surfactant micelles. The surfactant consists of polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrophilic headgroups and alkane chains for the hydrophobic tail. The figure shows benzene and toluene within the alkane core, salicylic acid (2-hydroxybenzoic acid) at the interface between the core and PEG chains, and then para-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-hydroxybenzoic acid) located between the PEG chains. Molecular dynamics simulations of octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether micelles were performed with a series of probe molecules, including those within the Martin’s figure, to determine their solubilization location. Relative placement of molecules within the micelle was correct; however, some specifics were different. In particular, benzene and toluene are excluded from the core, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid prefers to maintain contact with the core. A series of molecules containing 6 carbon atoms were also studied to determine the effects of cyclization (moves out of core), polar functionalization (anchored to interface), and aromatization (excluded from central core). Molecular dynamics was found to be a useful tool for gaining insight into interactions important in solubilization of molecules.

Oil-water interfaces with surfactants: A systematic approach to determine coarse-grained model parameters.

In order to investigate the interfacial region between oil and water with the presence of surfactants using coarse-grained computations, both the interaction between different components of the system and the number of surfactant molecules present at the interface play an important role. However, in many prior studies, the amount of surfactants used was chosen rather arbitrarily. In this work, a systematic approach to develop coarse-grained models for anionic surfactants (such as sodium dodecyl sulfate) and nonionic surfactants (such as octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether) in oil-water interfaces is presented. The key is to place the theoretically calculated number of surfactant molecules on the interface at the critical micelle concentration. Based on this approach, the molecular description of surfactants and the effects of various interaction parameters on the interfacial tension are investigated. The results indicate that the interfacial tension is affected mostly by the head-water and tail-oil interaction. Even though the procedure presented herein is used with dissipative particle dynamics models, it can be applied for other coarse-grained methods to obtain the appropriate set of parameters (or force fields) to describe the surfactant behavior on the oil-water interface.

Adsorption at the Air-Water Interface in Biosurfactant-Surfactant Mixtures: Quantitative Analysis of Adsorption in a Five-Component Mixture.

The composition of the air-water adsorbed layer of a quinary mixture consisting of three conventional surfactants, octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8), dodecane-6-p-sodium benzene sulfonate (LAS6), and diethylene glycol monododecyl ether sodium sulfate (SLE2S), mixed with two biosurfactants, the rhamnolipids l-rhamnosyl-l-rhamnosyl-β-hydroxydecanoyl-β-hydroxydecanoyl, R2, and l-rhamnosyl-β-hydroxydecanoyl-β-hydroxydecanoyl, R1, has been measured over a range of compositions above the mixed critical micelle concentration. Additional measurements on some of the subsets of ternary and binary mixtures have also been measured by NR. The results have been analyzed using the pseudophase approximation (PPA) in conjunction with an excess free energy, GE, that depends on the quadratic and cubic terms in the composition. The compositions of the binary, ternary, and quinary mixtures could all be fitted to two sets of interaction parameters between the pairs of surfactants, one for micelles and one for adsorption. No ternary interactions or ternary corrections were required. Because the system contains two strongly anionic surfactants, the PPA can be extended, in practice, to ionic surfactants, contrary to the prevailing view. The values of the interaction parameters show that the quinary mixture, SLE2S-LAS6-C12E8-R1-R2, which is known to be a highly effective surfactant system, is characterized by a sequence of strong surface but weak micellar interactions. About half of the minima in GE for the strong surface interactions occur well away from the regular solution value of 0.5.

Spherical harmonics analysis of surface density fluctuations of spherical ionic SDS and nonionic C12E8 micelles: A molecular dynamics study.

The surface structure and its fluctuation of spherical micelles were investigated using a series of density correlation functions newly defined by spherical harmonics and Legendre polynomials based on the molecular dynamics calculations. To investigate the influence of head-group charges on the micelle surface structure, ionic sodium dodecyl sulfate and nonionic octaethyleneglycol monododecylether (C12E8) micelles were investigated as model systems. Large-scale density fluctuations were observed for both micelles in the calculated surface static structure factor. The area compressibility of the micelle surface evaluated by the surface static structure factor was tens-of-times larger than a typical value of a lipid membrane surface. The structural relaxation time, which was evaluated from the surface intermediate scattering function, indicates that the relaxation mechanism of the long-range surface structure can be well described by the hydrostatic approximation. The density fluctuation on the two-dimensional micelle surface has similar characteristics to that of three-dimensional fluids near the critical point.

Phase Behavior of Salt-Free Polyelectrolyte Gel-Surfactant Systems.

Ionic surfactants tend to collapse the outer parts of polyelectrolyte gels, forming shells that can be used to encapsulate other species including protein and peptide drugs. In this paper, the aqueous phase behavior of covalently cross-linked polyacrylate networks containing sodium ions and dodecyltrimethylammonium ions as counterions is investigated by means of swelling isotherms, dye staining, small-angle X-ray scattering, and confocal Raman spectroscopy. The equilibrium state is approached by letting the networks absorb pure water. With an increasing fraction of surfactant ions, the state of the water-saturated gels is found to change from being swollen and monophasic, via multiphasic states, to collapsed and monophasic. The multiphasic gels have a swollen, micelle-lean core surrounded by a collapsed, micelle-rich shell, or a collapsed phase forming a spheroidal inner shell separating two micelle-lean parts. It is shown that the transition between monophasic and core-shell states can be induced by variation of the osmotic pressure and variation of the charge of the micelles by forming mixed micelles with the nonionic surfactant octaethyleneglycol monododecylether. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions of a model derived earlier. In the calculations, the collapsed shell is assumed to be homogeneous, an approximation introduced here and shown to be excellent for a wide range of compositions. The theoretical results highlight the electrostatic and hydrophobic driving forces behind phase separation.

Refolding of SDS-Unfolded Proteins by Nonionic Surfactants

The strong and usually denaturing interaction between anionic surfactants (AS) and proteins/enzymes has both benefits and drawbacks: for example, it is put to good use in electrophoretic mass determinations but limits enzyme efficiency in detergent formulations. Therefore, studies of the interactions between proteins and AS as well as nonionic surfactants (NIS) are of both basic and applied relevance. The AS sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) denatures and unfolds globular proteins under most conditions. In contrast, NIS such as octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8) and dodecyl maltoside (DDM) protect bovine serum albumin (BSA) from unfolding in SDS. Membrane proteins denatured in SDS can also be refolded by addition of NIS. Here, we investigate whether globular proteins unfolded by SDS can be refolded upon addition of C12E8 and DDM. Four proteins, BSA, α-lactalbumin (αLA), lysozyme, and β-lactoglobulin (βLG), were studied by small-angle x-ray scattering and both near- and far-UV circular dichroism. All proteins and their complexes with SDS were attempted to be refolded by the addition of C12E8, while DDM was additionally added to SDS-denatured αLA and βLG. Except for αLA, the proteins did not interact with NIS alone. For all proteins, the addition of NIS to the protein-SDS samples resulted in extraction of the SDS from the protein-SDS complexes and refolding of βLG, BSA, and lysozyme, while αLA changed to its NIS-bound state instead of the native state. We conclude that NIS competes with globular proteins for association with SDS, making it possible to release and refold SDS-denatured proteins by adding sufficient amounts of NIS, unless the protein also interacts with NIS alone.

Self-assembly in dilute mixtures of non-ionic and anionic surfactants and rhamnolipd biosurfactants

The self-assembly of dilute aqueous solutions of a ternary surfactant mixture and rhamnolipid biosurfactant/surfactant mixtures has been studied by small angle neutron scattering. In the ternary surfactant mixture of octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12E8, sodium dodecyl 6-benzene sulfonate, LAS, and sodium dioxyethylene monododecyl sulfate, SLES, small globular interacting micelles are observed over the entire composition and concentration range studied. The modelling of the scattering data strongly supports the assumption that the micelle compositions are close to the solution compositions. In the 5-component rhamnolipid/surfactant mixture of the mono-rhamnose, R1, di-rhamnose, R2, rhamnolipids with C12E8/LAS/SLES, globular micelles are observed over much of the concentration and composition range studied. However, for solutions relatively rich in rhamnolipid and LAS, lamellar/micellar coexistence is observed. The transition from globular to more planar structures arises from a synergistic packing in the 5 component mixture. It is not observed in the individual components nor in the ternary C12E8/LAS/SLES mixture at these relatively low concentrations. The results provide an insight into how synergistic packing effects can occur in the solution self-assembly of complex multi-component surfactant mixtures, and give rise to an unexpected evolution in the phase behaviour.

Aqueous solutions of didecyldimethylammonium chloride and octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether: Toward synergistic formulations against enveloped viruses

Micellization of di-n-decyldimethylammonium chloride, [DiC10][Cl], and octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12E8, mixtures have been investigated by surface tension and conductivity measurements. From these results, various physicochemical and thermodynamic key parameters (e.g. micellar mole fraction of [DiC10][Cl], interaction parameter, free energy of micellization, etc.) have been evaluated and discussed in detail. The results prove high synergistic effect between the two surfactants. Based on these results, the virucidal activity of an equimolar mixture of [DiC10][Cl] and C12E8 has been investigated. A marked synergism was observed on lipid-containing deoxyribonucleic and ribonucleic acid viruses, such as herpes virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and vaccinia viruses. In contrast, Coxsackievirus (non-enveloped virus) was not inactivated. These results support that the mechanism is based on the extraction of lipids and/or proteins from the envelope inside the mixed micelles. This extraction creates ⿿holes⿿ the size of which increases with concentration up to a specific value which triggers the virus inactivation. Such a mixture could be used to extend the spectrum of virucidal activity of the amphiphiles virucides commonly employed in numerous disinfectant solutions.

A molecular dynamics study of the breathing and deforming modes of the spherical ionic SDS and nonionic C12E8 micelles.

In order to investigate shape of the micelles and its thermal fluctuations, molecular dynamics calculations have been performed for spherical ionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic octaethyleneglycol monododecyl ether (C12E8) micelles. New statistical functions suitable for extracting the fluctuations of the shape of the spherical micelles were defined using spherical harmonics and Legendre polynomials. The breathing and deforming modes of the SDS and C12E8 micelles were analyzed in detail based on these new functions. The elastic nature of the micelle core was also discussed. The present analysis gives a new molecular picture that the micelle shape is a superposition of the various kinds of breathing and deforming modes, and each mode has a specific relaxation time of the shape fluctuation.
