The 2nd Asian Genetics Consortium Conference (AGCC 2025), entitled "Genetics in Asia: Heredity, Diversity, Discovery, and Beyond," was held in Numazu City, Shizuoka, Japan, from November 14-16, 2025. The conference was jointly organized by the Genetics Society of Japan as the leading host, together with the Genetics Societies and related organizations of the other five Asian countries (Korea, India, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand). A total of 72 participants attended, including 19 participants from six overseas countries and regions outside Japan. Invited speakers representing each country delivered lectures on cutting-edge research in genetics, its international significance, and future perspectives, followed by active and lively discussions. In addition, there were 30 poster presentations, mainly by young researchers, which stimulated vibrant scientific exchange. From among the presenters, one researcher received the Best Poster Award, and five researchers received Outstanding Poster Awards.

The Meeting Report on the Fifth International Conference of the Chromosomal SMC Complexes.

The fifth international meeting, entitled "SMC Complexes: Orchestrating Diverse Genome Functions", took place in Numazu City, Shizuoka, Japan from October 15-18, 2024. With 159 attendees (115 of whom were from 18 countries and regions), the meeting aimed to further our understanding of large-scale chromosome organization and related chromosomal events, which are mediated by SMC complexes, one of the major architects of chromosomes. Discussion at the meeting was prompted by 49 talks and 82 poster presentations, which covered a variety of topics including the eukaryotic cohesin, condensin and SMC5/6 complexes, as well as bacterial and archaeal SMC complexes. Various cutting-edge approaches, ranging from molecular dynamics simulations to medical genetics, were developed and applied to reveal the functions of SMC complexes at mechanical and chromosomal levels. All attendees enjoyed the presentations of leading works and discussions with leading scientists in the field of chromosome biology.

Enhanced large-scale building extraction evaluation: developing a two-level framework using proxy data and building matching

ABSTRACT Deep learning-based building extraction methods have widespread applications in diverse fields. However, the evaluation of large-scale extraction results remains challenging, due to traditional evaluation metrics rely on manually created ground-truth samples and the lack of comprehensive reference-building data for developing countries. To address these problems, we proposed a two-level framework for evaluating large-scale footprint extraction. First, we utilised global open-source population and land use data as the proxy data, to assess grid-level completeness for the areas with insufficient reference data. Second, we introduced an improved two-way area-overlapping method to match the extracted footprints with the reference buildings, thereby enabling a comprehensive evaluation of the study region. Tested in Hyogo Prefecture and Numazu City, Japan, the results demonstrated a 2.6-% improvement in grid classification accuracy and an increase of 0.53 in the completeness correlation, compared with the results obtained using a single proxy indicator. Moreover, the optimised matching method achieved an outstanding semantic matching accuracy of 99%, with high efficiency and robustness in multi-scale matching. Therefore, the proposed approach can effectively evaluate large-scale footprint extraction results and interpret their semantic relationship with actual buildings, applicable globally regardless of the availability of reference building datasets.

Geometric-based approach for linking various building measurement data to a 3D city model.

Currently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (Japan) is in the process of developing an open 3D city model known as PLATEAU. Abundant measurement data related to buildings, including maps produced by private companies and mobile mapping system point clouds, have been collected to enhance the value of the 3D city model. To achieve this, it is necessary to identify the buildings for which measurement data is available. In this study, we propose and evaluate an efficient matching method for various building measurement data, primarily using geometric properties. In Numazu city, PLATEAU IDs were assigned to 88,525 Zenrin buildings as part of a private map. The results indicate that 90.6% of the polygons were matched. For aerial images, 93.6% of the extracted buildings matched the PLATEAU buildings, although only 70.9% of the PLATEAU data was extracted from the images. Using the level of detail 1 and 2 models, 46 textured building files were created from the mobile mapping system point cloud. In addition, the cover ratio for the laser profiling point cloud was mostly greater than 40%, which was higher than that of the mobile mapping system.

Epidemiology of a Femur Shaft Fracture in an Acute Critical Care Center in a Rural Area of Japan

Purpose:Japan has the most rapidly aging population in the world. As of 2017, the number of people ≥65 years of age in Japan was 35.1 million, constituting 27.7% of the total population. The purpose of the study was to investigate the epidemiology in patients with a femur shaft fracture in a rural area with a super-aging population.Methods:Electronic medical charts from January 2011 to March 2019 were retrospectively reviewed for all patients with the main disease of ‘femur shaft fracture’ who had been transported to Numazu City Hospital. Subjects were divided into two groups based on the mechanism of injury: a Low-Energy (LE) group, which included patients who had been injured by falling down or suffered a fracture while walking; and a High-Energy (HE) group, which included patients who had been injured by traffic accidents or free fall from a high place (over 3 m). The variables were compared between the two groups.Results:During the investigation period, there were 58 patients with the femur shaft fracture, including 28 patients in the HE group and 30 in the LE group. The male ratio, injury severity score and ratio of open fracture in the HE group were significantly greater than in the LE group. The age and systolic blood pressure in the HE group were significantly lower than in the LE group.Conclusion:Among patients with femur shaft fracture in the acute critical care center in a rural area of Japan, where the population is super-aging, the frequency of HE and LE femur shaft fracture was almost the same. The fragility of the femur shaft in elderly people may explain this tendency.

Clinical analysis of false-negative fine needle aspiration cytology of head and neck cancers

ABSTRACTBackground: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is frequently used for initial and/or preoperative diagnosis of tumors in the head and neck region. However, false-negative results can lead to misdiagnosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic results of FNA in the head and neck region and the reasons for false-negative cases.Methods: The study population comprised 1,341 patients with pathologically confirmed head and neck tumors in whom FNA was performed before surgery or biopsy in the Otolaryngology Department at Numazu City Hospital between 2002 and 2016. We evaluated the false-negative FNA cytology rate as well as the site of the primary nodule, patient age and sex, sensitivity, accuracy, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and the pathologic diagnosis after resection.Results: The rate of false-negative FNA results was 5.9% (78/1,315 cases). The main sites of false-negative cases were the thyroid gland (n = 50), the lymph nodes (n = 16), and the salivary glands (n = 9). The sensitivity of FNA for head and neck tumors was 82.0%, with specificity and accuracy rates of 94% and 92.0%, respectively.Conclusions: We have assessed the quality of preoperative FNA cytology in head and neck tumors. To avoid misdiagnosis by FNA, it is important that the target tumor is punctured accurately. If the specimen obtained is too small, FNA should be repeated.

Difference in First Aid Activity During Mass Casualty Training Based on Having Taken an Educational Course.

The Japanese Association for Disaster Medicine developed a mass casualty life support (MCLS) course to improve cooperation among medical practitioners during a disaster, which is essential for reducing the rates of preventable disaster death. We investigated whether there was difference in first aid activity among members of the ambulance service during mass casualty training based on having taken the MCLS course. Mass casualty training was held at the fire department of Numazu City. Twenty-one ambulance service parties participated in this training. They first evaluated the mass casualty situation, performed the appropriate services at the scene during the initial period, and then provided START triage for mock wounded patients. Throughout the training, 5 examiners evaluated their performance. Regarding the difference in first aid activity based on MCLS course attendance among the ambulance service members, the cooperative management (scored on a scale of 1 to 5) among the members who had taken the MCLS course was significantly better than that among those who had not taken the course (median [interquartile range]: 5 [0.5] vs. 4 [1.75], P<0.05). Attending an MCLS course may help to improve outcomes in the face of an actual mass casualty incident. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2018;12:437-440).

Purpose of this study is to clarify the whole pictures of the Fireproof Building Promotion Law (1952) and the characters of the Local Cities to which this law was applied. Outcomes of incomplete hysteroscopic resection of sessile type submucous myoma

Study Objective: To analyze the progression of patients after incomplete TCR (transcervical resection), including natural regression, pregnancy and repeated surgery.Setting: Numazu City Hospital, Shizuoka, JapanPatients: From 2005 to 2008, hysteroscopic myomectomy was performed on 21 patients with sessile type submucous myoma. Thirteen of these cases underwent an incomplete resection, and the follow up period after which post TCR occurred in these cases was between 5 to 26 months. Of 13 cases, 9 patients had a single myoma, and 4 had multiple myomas. Results: Of 9 cases of a single myoma, 2 regressed spontaneously within 4 months postoperatively. Four cases remained stable. Three cases required another surgery, including TCR. The sizes of the persistent myomas were 13 to 19.5 mm, 13 to 18 mm, and 20 to 38 mm, respectively. Based on our results between stable and repeated surgery groups, the border size of a myoma was 20 mm. Both a patient with a regressed myoma and 1 with a stable myoma became spontaneously pregnant. Of 4 cases with multiple myomas, 2 cases remained stable and another 2 cases likely needed another surgery. The number of myomas in stable cases was 2, while the number of myomas that required another intervention was 7 and innumerable. Therefore, the border number of a myomas was 2. Conclusion: Our results indicate that patients with persistent myomas that are single in number and smaller than 2 cm in size may be able to become pregnant and that these myomas may spontaneously regress. This study also showed that additional surgical intervention might be necessary for the persistent single myoma that is bigger than 2 cm or multiple myomas of more than 3 in number.

Combined passive and active immunoprophylaxis for preventing perinatal transmission of the hepatitis B virus carrier state in Shizuoka, Japan during 1980-1994.

Efficacy and limits in preventing perinatal infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) have been examined in a model area in Japan. In Shizuoka (population of 3.6 million), immunoprophylaxis of perinatal HBV infection was started in 1980 in four institutions (Hamamatsu Medical College, Shimada City Hospital, Shizuoka Kodomo Hospital and Numazu City Hospital). Babies born to carrier mothers with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) in serum received hepatitis B immune globulins at birth and 2 months thereafter and vaccines at 2, 3 and 5 months after birth. Overall, 980 of the 1030 babies born to HBeAg-positive carrier mothers were protected by the immunoprophylaxis during the 15 years from 1980 to 1994 with an efficacy of 95.1%. From 1986 to 1994 while the national immunoprophylaxis was conducted, 329,674 of the 346,637 (95.1%) expectant mothers were tested, and 2081 (0.63%) of them were positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The immunoprophylaxis was given only to babies born to 764 (36.7%) of the 2081 mothers who tested positive for HBeAg. Of the 494 babies receiving immunoprophylaxis, in whom HBsAg was followed monthly after birth, 462 (93.5%) were protected. The HBV carrier state developed in the remaining 32 (6.5%) babies, 10 of whom (31.3% of the 32) turned positive for HBsAg within 1 month after birth, most likely owing to infection in utero. Passive-active immunoprophylasxis of high-risk babies was highly efficacious in preventing perinatal transmission of the HBV carrier state. Most failures (approximately 70%) occurred in the high-risk babies who were exposed to HBV after birth, and would have been avoided by careful and extensive execution of the immunoprophylaxis.

With the spread of the Internet, the technology of Web3D that can display threedimensional computer graphics on Web has been developed.Using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) to be a kind of Web3D, the historical cultural properties of art museum, the ruins of a castle etc. relate to Numazu city in Japan to be the seat of our university were made, and the inside of three-dimensional space could be inspected freely through the Internet.The contents that have been made are Gen Yamaguchi virtual art museum, Numazu Imperial Villa, Bokusui Wakayama Memorial Hall, Koukoku-ji castle and Numazu Shoji art museum.Moreover, the system to retrieve easily these contents was developed.

Sense of Japanese Cultural Identity Within an English Partial Immersion Programme: Should Parents Worry?

An early English language immersion programme was implemented in the Elementary school at Katoh Gakuen, in Numazu City, Japan, in April 1992. Although its students have demonstrated academic achievement and first language proficiency comparable to students in immersion programmes in North America (Bostwick, 1999, 2000), parents who are reluctant to choose immersion have expressed concerns for their child's sense of Japanese cultural identity. The Attitude towards Japan and the West Questionnaire (AJWQ) was constructed to examine how the English immersion students subjectively perceive themselves in relation to Japan and the West. Five subscales were identified: attraction towards Western culture, positive attitude towards English, identity with Japan, awareness of Japanese culture, and attraction towards Westerners. The questionnaire was given in Japanese to 5th, 6th and 7th grade immersion students at Katoh Gakuen Elementary School (n = 109), and to comparable non-immersion public school students (n = 409). The results of the subscale comparison indicated that in addition to more flexible cross-cultural attitudes, the immersion students displayed a stronger sense of Japanese cultural identity than the comparison group.

The purpose of this study was to investigate physical education in 'Kobu-daigakko' (the Imperial College of Engineering), which had been called 'Kogakuryo' in the early period, and clarify the significance it had in the history of school physical education in Japan. The materials analysed were collected at the National Diet Library, the National Archives, the Archives and the Central Library in the University of Tokyo, and Numazu City Archives of Meiji. The results of this study are summerized as follows: 1) Judging from T. Hayashi's proposal to adopt military drill, 'Kobu-daigakko' founded by Ministry of Public Works in 1873 had been concerned about physical education since the early period of 'Kogakuryo'. 2) However, 'Kobu-daigakko' did not have physical education as a subject, while students had an hour of exercise as their daily routine which the college urged them to observe. They were free to select the kind of sports and could have a good time and find the beginning of the friendship. It Was a feature of physical education for 'Kobu-daigakko' to have introduced various kinds of sports. 3) A physical education teacher employed by 'Kobu-daigakko' was Ituro Shimo who had been a gymnastic teacher at Numazu Military Academy before. He seemed to have experienced military gymnastics at the closing period of the Tokugawa shogunate and to have taught the same system of gymnastics. 4) Physical education in 'Kobu-daigakko' was an intermediate form between a regular subject and an extra-curricular sports. 5) Physical education in 'Kobu-daigakko' had a significance in Japanese history of school physical education to be an experiment for physical education in higher education, which contrasted with physical education consisted of formal gymnastics in schools under the administration of the Ministry of Education.

Ocean Experiments to Discriminate Seabed Materials by Echo Pulse and Neural Network at Uchiura Bay

The authors used two sets of measurements, the first made in Aug. 1991 at Uchiura Bay, off Numazu City, and the second made in Oct. 1993 at nearly the same place, in an attempt to prove the usefulness of pulse echo and neural network in discriminating different types of seabed material, such as rock, sand and silt. As a result, good discrimination ratios of over 80% for the 3 seabed materials were achieved when learning and discriminating data were obtained by averaging 32 datums from one measuring place and averaging again this average value for more than 3 measuring places.
