The Slavs of northern Hungary inhabit the mountainous country on the southern slopes of the northern Carpathian Mountains and reach in both the west and the east as far south as 48? N. latitude. The area may be divided into three main divisions: Slovachia in the west which marches with Moravia in Austria, the home of the Moravians who are akin td the Slovaks; Ruthenia-Slovachia in the centre, which borders Galicia on the north with the Poles in the west of Galicia and the Ruthenians in the east; and Ruthenia in the east which touches eastern Galicia and Bukovina, so that the Ruthenians lie on both sides of the Hungarian boundary. Within the confines of Hungary, Slovachia adjoins German Magyaria which lies south and west of the Danube and north of the Drave; Ruthenian Slovachia marches with Magyaria in Central Hungary, and Ruthenia lies north of Rumanian Hungary.
