White collar crime is a non-violent crime, but it can have life-changing, catastrophic consequences that are very serious, nonetheless. A simple internet search on any online engine will reveal an abundance of information on white collar criminal activity that appears to be on the rise. Instead of decreasing data on this topic, there appears to be an increase in white collar crimes across the globe. There is a wide array of research that outline sanctions of past offenders that include community service to jail time. Many offenders will face minimal penalties such as community service and some high-profile offenders will not receive any punishment at all. This study will seek to examine the activity of white-collar criminals and whether the punishment for the behavior is an effective deterrent. It has been suggested by scholars and policymakers that white-collar criminals will be adversely affected by punishment and the analysis of this research will ascertain whether this theory is accurate.
