TEAM TEACHING WITH NATIVE SPEAKERS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSES AT HIGHER SCHOOL

This paper is devoted to the problem of teaching English as a foreign language by a native speaker and a non-native spea-king teacher working as partners in the same classroom. At the present day team teaching is considered to be one of the most beneficial approaches applied by modern ESL teachers in Russia and other non-English-speaking countries. Tips for effective functioning together are provided including approaches to planning and managing the class. The article is based on the experience of team teaching with an assistant from the USA at National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University. The assistant taught English in collaboration with Russian speaking teachers within class work and extracurricular activities.

20th International Conference for Students and Young Scientists: Modern Techniques and Technologies (MTT’2014)

The active involvement of young researchers in scientific processes and the acquisition of scientific experience by gifted youth currently have a great value for the development of science. One of the research activities of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, aimed at the preparing and formation of the next generation of scientists, is the International Conference of Students and Young Scientists ‘‘Modern Techniques and Technologies’’, which was held in 2014 for the twentieth time.Great experience in the organization of scientific events has been acquired through years of carrying the conference. There are all the necessary resources for this: a team of organizers – employees of Tomsk Polytechnic University, premises provided with modern office equipment and equipment for demonstration, and leading scientists – professors of TPU, as well as the status of the university as a leading research university in Russia. This way the conference is able to attract world leading scientists for the collaboration.For the previous years the conference proved itself as a major scientific event at international level, which attracts more than 600 students and young scientists from Russia, CIS and other countries. The conference provides oral plenary and section reports. The conference is organized around lectures, where leading Russian and foreign scientists deliver plenary presentations to young audiences.An important indicator of this scientific event is the magnitude of the coverage of scientific fields: energy, heat and power, instrument making, engineering, systems and devices for medical purposes, electromechanics, material science, computer science and control in technical systems, nanotechnologies and nanomaterials, physical methods in science and technology, control and quality management, design and technology of artistic materials processing. The main issues considered by young researchers at the conference were related to the analysis of contemporary problems using new techniques and application of new technologies.

Development of Fiber Optic Current Sensor

Current measuring high-precision methods and devices are one of the most important modern engineering development lines in optimal energy consumption sphere. However, there are a few small-sized instruments which allow conducting precision measurements without breaking the circuit. This paper presents information about conducted Faraday Effect research and general construction of the simple fiber optic current sensor (FOCS). Researched sensor conception is used in prototype which is developing by team of laboratory number 63 of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University Nondestructive Testing Institute. Required tests and accuracy analysis were conducted. Research results confirm that fiber optic current sensors provide high-precision measurement and proposed methodic is effective.

Clusters Formation in Salts Solution in Polar Dielectric Liquids and Electrically-induced Separation of Solvated Ions

The aim of study is to demonstrate that separation of solvated ions in solution of mix of salts under the action of external periodic electric field happens because of around ions there are formed clusters consisting of molecules of solvent and the sizes of such clusters have dimensions ~ 0.1 μm. In investigations the sizes of clusters theoretically were defined and experimentally value of frequency of external electric field which action excites the effect of separation of the solvated ions was defined. Experiments were done in the Technical Physics Chair of the National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University. At theoretical determination of the dimensions of clusters Poisson's equation was solved and was considered that polar molecules of solvent are oriented under the action of electric field of an ion. The chemical composition of samples of solutions was determined by means of the X-ray excited fluorescent radiation analysis method. Theoretical estimates and results of experiments confirmed the assumption that clusters which are formed around ions in solutions have the dimensions ~ 0.1 μm. Results of investigation testify that placing of volume distributed electric charge of ion in Original Research Article British Journal of Applied Science & Technology, 4(18): 2014 2539 dielectric liquid is accompanied by formation of the supramolecular particles, which we called “clusters”, linear sizes of which is significantly more than first and second radiuses of solvation (~ 1 Angstrom) and reach size ~ 0.1 μm. At such sizes inertial properties of clusters and their natural frequencies give the chance to operate their movement by means of action of external electric field on solution.

Хроматографическая идентификация некоторых производных фенилэтиламина

The results of chromatographic study of psychoactive drugs emerged in recent years on the illicit market are rendered in the article. 18 phenethylamine derivatives were identified by means of gas-liquid chromatography with mass selective detection and their chromatographic retention indexes were defined. The known regularities of fragmentation of molecules of saturated aliphatic amines in electron impact ionization were confirmed during the study of the mass spectra of the known phenethylamine derivatives and used to decrypt the mass spectra of 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methcathinone, 4-methylmethcathinones and 4-methylethcathinones. The indicators of chromatographic retention in the solvent system of chloroform-acetone-ethanol-25% ammonia solution (20:20:3:1) were identified by thin layer chromatography on silica gel for these compounds. Measuring the astrophysical S factors and the cross sections of the p(d, γ)3He reaction in the ultralow energy region using a zirconium deuteride target

The present paper is dedicated to the study of the p(d, γ)3He reaction mechanism with the use of a zirconium deuteride target at proton energies of 11–19 keV. The experiment has been carried out using a proton beam of a high-current pulsed Hall accelerator at the National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University. The dependences of the astrophysical S factor and the effective cross section of the pd reaction on the proton-deuteron collision energy are measured. The results were compared with the available data. The results detailed in the present work agree with the results of an experiment carried out by the LUNA collaboration with the use of a gaseous deuterium target.

Technology Focus This year’s technical papers discuss employing advances gained in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to induce multiphase-fluid separation through novel piping configurations and rotational dynamics rather than internal mechanical processes and baffles. These novel flow-chamber designs are reducing facility footprints and tank sizes, lending themselves to reduced platform-deck sizes offshore and extending water-depth ratings subsea. CFD also is improving the strategic placement of insulation barriers, piping geometry, and mixing of treatment chemicals to improve flow assurance and minimize erosion. Other techniques use biotechnology to detect and treat harmful microbial action at previously undetectable levels so that corrosion or increasing sour-service conditions can be avoided long before the number of microbes can grow to harmful levels.
