Associations of Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior With Mental Distress According to Caregiver Status: Analysis of the Health Information National Trends Survey, 2022.

To (1) examine how physical activity and sedentary behavior are related to mental distress and (2) identify and compare how various levels of sedentary behaviors may differentially predict mental distress after accounting for physical activity, among caregivers vs non-caregivers. Cross-sectional secondary data. National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey Cycle 6 fielded online from March-November 2022. U.S. adults aged 18 and older. The Patient Health Questionnaire-4 was administered along with caregiving status, moderate weekly physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sociodemographic characteristics. After applying population weights, we conducted multiple adjusted logistic regression models and estimated predictive margins to understand whether a specific dose of sedentary behavior (hours/day) is associated with risk of mental distress, at different levels of physical activity. Caregivers (15.41% of sample) reporting 10-hour of daily sedentary behavior were significantly more likely to experience mental distress, than those reporting lower amounts of sedentary behavior (OR = 3.372, 95%CI = 1.968, 5.776, P < 0.001). Regardless of physical activity amount, 10 hours of sedentary behavior may be a risk factor for mental distress among non-caregivers. Just 6 hours of sedentary behavior may be related to mental distress among caregivers. Physical activity interventions tailored to caregivers' needs, responsibilities, and circumstances are required. Innovative methodologies are needed to understand caregivers' daily behaviors and the intensity of their caregiving activities.

The Evolution of Health Information Technology for Enhanced Patient-Centric Care in the United States: Data-Driven Descriptive Study.

Health information technology (health IT) has revolutionized health care in the United States through interoperable clinical care data exchange, e-prescribing, electronic public health reporting, and electronic patient access to health information. This study aims to examine progress in health IT adoption and its alignment with the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy/Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ASTP's) mission to enhance health care through data access and exchange. This study leverages data on end users of health IT to capture trends in engagement in interoperable clinical care data exchange (ability to find, send, receive, and integrate information from outside organizations), e-prescribing, electronic public health reporting, and capabilities to enable patient access to electronic health information. Data were primarily sourced from the American Hospital Association Annual Survey IT Supplement (2008 to 2023), Surescripts e-prescribing use data (2008 to 2023), the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey (2014 to 2022), and the National Center for Health Statistics' National Electronic Health Records Survey (2009 to 2023). Since 2009, there has been a 10-fold increase in electronic health record (EHR) use among hospitals and a 5-fold increase among physicians. This enabled the interoperable exchange of electronic health information, e- prescribing, electronic public health data exchange, and the means for patients and their caregivers to access crucial personal health information digitally. As of 2023, 70% of hospitals are interoperable, with many providers integrated within EHR systems. Nearly all pharmacies and 92% of prescribers possess e-prescribing capabilities, an 85%-point increase since 2008. In 2013, 40% of hospitals and one-third of physicians allowed patients to view their online medical records. Patient access has improved, with 97% of hospitals and 65% of physicians possessing EHRs that enable patients to access their online medical records. As of 2022, three-fourths of individuals report being offered access to patient portals, and over half (57%) report engaging with their health information through their patient portal. Electronic public health reporting has also seen an increase, with most hospitals and physicians actively engaged in key reporting types. Federal incentives have contributed to the widespread adoption of EHRs and broad digitization in health care, while efforts to promote interoperability have encouraged collaboration across health care entities. As a result, interoperable clinical care data exchange, e-prescribing, electronic public health reporting, and patient access to health information have grown substantially over the past quarter century and have been shown to improve health care outcomes. However, interoperability hurdles, usability issues, data security concerns, and inequitable patient access persist. Addressing these issues will require collaborative efforts among stakeholders to promote data standardization, implement governance structures, and establish robust health information exchange networks.

Online patient-provider communication and healthy ageing: the roles of health literacy and health self-efficacy.

eHealth involves using digital technologies, like electronic health records and telemedicine, to enhance healthcare delivery and outcomes. For older adults, eHealth helps manage chronic conditions, access services remotely, and engage in preventive health, improving physical and psychological well-being. This study investigates the association between online patient-provider communication (OPPC) and older adults' quality of life (QoL, i.e. sleep quality, exercise and psychological health). The study also explores how health literacy and health self-efficacy mediate the relationship between OPPC and QoL. This study utilized data from the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey, collected in 2019 (HINTS 5 Cycle 3), specifically targeting individuals aged ≥ 60 (N = 2587). The associations among variables were analysed using structural equation modelling. OPPC was positively and significantly associated with health literacy (β = 0.53, p < 0.001). Health literacy was positively and significantly related to health self-efficacy (β = 0.02, p < 0.001). Health self-efficacy was significantly related to five dimensions of QoL: sleep quality (β = 0.20, p < 0.001), fruit and vegetable consumption (β = 0.13, p < 0.010), exercise (β = 0.59, p < 0.001), sedentariness (β = -0.58, p < 0.001) and psychological health (β = 0.24, p < 0.001). Besides, health literacy and health self-efficacy also mediated the influence of OPPC on QoL sequentially, being identificators as two serial mediators between OPPC and older adults' QoL. This study suggests that OPPC plays an important role in older adults' QoL.

Perceptions and Interest in Lung Cancer Screening by Smoking Status: A Cross-Sectional Study of HINTS 6 (2022).

Lung cancer screening guidelines prioritize individuals with a history of smoking due to their higher risk of the disease. Our study examines the awareness and interest in low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening among different smoking statuses using data from the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 6 (2022). We analyzed data from HINTS 6, including 3915 participants on smoking status, LDCT screening, and telehealth use. Participants were categorized as current smokers, former smokers, and non-smokers. Current smokers had the highest likelihood of being recommended for LDCT screening (OR: 7.1, aOR: 10.4) compared with non-smokers. Former smokers also had increased odds of screening recommendations (OR: 3.1, aOR: 3.4) than non-smokers. Despite higher screening recommendations, current smokers exhibited significantly lower interest in cancer screening (interest rating score: 2.1) compared with non-smokers (interest rating score: 2.4) and former smokers (interest rating score: 2.5). Current smokers rated their telehealth care experiences more positively in terms of care quality compared with non-smokers. Our findings underscore a gap in cancer screening interest among current smokers despite their higher likelihood of being recommended for LDCT screening. The favorable perception of telehealth among current smokers provides an opportunity to enhance engagement and promote LDCT scan through telehealth care.

Disparities and Determinants of Online Medical Record Access among Cancer Survivors.

Access to online medical records (OMRs) can help enhance cancer patient engagement and improve their health outcomes. This study investigates disparities in OMR access among cancer survivors and examines the association between OMR access and health perceptions. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) from 2017 to 2022. The sample included 4713 cancer survivors. We employed regression analysis to assess the associations between the different factors. Overall, 18.78% of participants accessed their OMRs once or twice, while 36.69% accessed them three times or more. Gender minority groups (β = -0.0038, p = 0.01), older adults (β = -0.1126, p < 0.001), and racial minority groups (β = -0.059, p < 0.001) were less likely to access their OMRs. Additionally, higher education levels (β = 0.274, p < 0.001), insurance coverage (β = 0.365, p < 0.001), and higher incomes (β = 0.115, p < 0.001) were associated with increased OMR access. Positive health perceptions were significantly associated with OMR usage, including perceived good health (β = 0.148, p < 0.001), quality of care (β = 0.15, p = 0.026), and self-efficacy (β = 0.178, p = 0.002). Disparities in OMR access among cancer survivors are influenced by socio-economic factors and health perceptions. Interventions targeting vulnerable groups, enhancing digital health literacy, and improving health perceptions could promote equitable OMR usage.

Disparities in Exposure to Tobacco on Television or Streaming Platforms

With the rise in popularity of streaming platforms concerns about exposure to tobacco advertising and promotion have emerged. While tobacco marketing and promotion through traditional television (TV) media channels has been extensively studied, less is known about exposure to tobacco through TV or streaming platforms and its associated factors. To examine the prevalence and factors associated with exposure to tobacco products advertised, marketed, or promoted on TV or streaming platforms among US adults. This cross-sectional study used data from the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 6), conducted from March 7 to November 8, 2022. The nationally representative survey included noninstitutionalized civilian US adults. The primary outcome was self-reported exposure to tobacco advertisements, marketing, or promotion on TV or streaming platforms in the past 3 months. Factors associated with exposure were explored using multivariable survey logistic regression. The study included 5775 participants (3415 females [weighted percentage, 50.5%], 970 Hispanic individuals [weighted percentage, 16.9%], 872 non-Hispanic Black or African American individuals [11.1%], 3144 non-White individuals [61.5%], and 632 individuals who currently smoke [12.0%]). The estimated exposure to tobacco advertisements, marketing, or promotion on television or streaming platforms was 12.4% (95% CI, 10.8%-14.2%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that exposure odds were higher among those who had a level of education of high school or less (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.60; 95% CI, 1.08-2.37), individuals who currently smoke (aOR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.06-3.25), non-Hispanic Black or African American respondents (aOR, 2.20; 95% CI, 1.40-3.45) and Hispanic respondents (aOR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.04-2.42). In this study of the prevalence of exposure to tobacco advertisements on TV or streaming platforms among US adults, disparities in exposure by race or ethnicity, education level, and smoking status were identified. These findings underscore the need for targeted public health interventions and regulation to address these disparities and reduce the impact of tobacco advertisements on vulnerable populations.

Emotional Eating Prevalence and Correlates in Adolescents in the United States.

Background: Adolescent obesity rates continue to rise. A better understanding of who engages in emotional eating, a maladaptive eating style, is needed. Despite emotional eating being a frequent research target, the prevalence of emotional eating in US adolescents is currently unknown. Methods: Nationally representative adolescents (n = 1622, m = 14.48 years, 63.8% non-Hispanic White, 50.6% female) reported eating behaviors in the National Cancer Institute's Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) study. Frequencies and one-way ANOVAs were conducted to examine the rates of emotional eating across demographic and weight status groups. Correlations between emotional eating and dietary intake were examined. Results: In total, 30% of adolescents engaged in emotional eating. Older adolescents (35% of 17-year-olds), females (39%), non-Hispanic White individuals (32%), and adolescents with obesity (44%) had significantly higher rates of emotional eating. Controlling for weight status, greater adolescent emotional eating was correlated with more frequent intake of energy-dense/nutrient-poor foods (β = 0.10, p < 0.001), junk food (β = 0.12, p < 0.001), and convenience foods (β = 0.13, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study fills a critical gap by providing insight into how common adolescent emotional eating is and highlighting demographic factors that are associated with higher rates. Nearly a third of adolescents in the United States reported eating due to anxiety or sadness, with rates higher in older adolescents, girls, non-Hispanic White adolescents, and adolescents with obesity. Emotional eating was associated with consuming less healthy foods, which conveys immediate and long-term health risks. Practitioners can intervene with emotional eating to reduce obesity and comorbid health risks.

Abstract 4786: Colorectal cancer screening rates among deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing adults aged 45 to 75 years old

Abstract Background: Deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing (DDBHH) individuals who use American Sign Language (ASL), a subpopulation of the disability, experience disparities concerning cancer screening and cancer-related health outcomes. For this study, we explored colorectal cancer screening rates among DDBHH survey respondents in comparison to rates found in the hearing population. Materials and Methods: Using the National Cancer Institute Health Information National Trends Survey in ASL (Kushalnagar et al., 2015), we surveyed participants 18+ years old using the Center for Deaf Health Equity at Gallaudet University’s database of over 2,500 DDBHH participants from all over the USA, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico. We used the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines’ age cutoffs to assess adherence to colorectal cancer screenings. Results: Survey response rate within three weeks of mail out in July 2023 was 12%. A total of 405 DDBHH adult participants answered screening questions for colorectal cancer in ASL and English. Overall, 43.7% self-reported screening adherence for age-eligible (45-75 years) colorectal cancer screening; 54.7% reported never having a colorectal cancer screening. Similarly-aged hearing adults reported 58.7% adherence in the English version of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Discussion: With the 43.7% adherence rate, the DDBHH community is lagging behind colorectal cancer screenings compared to the general population of hearing adults. Estimating the colorectal cancer screening rates among the DBHH community and understanding the reasons for these existing disparities is important to achieve screening adherence of 68.3%, the target set by the Healthy People 2030. Perceived discrimination as a mediator between cultural identity and mental health symptoms among racial/ethnic minority adults in the United States: insights from the Health Information National Trends Survey 6.

This study examined the role of perceived discrimination as a mediator between cultural identity and mental health symptoms among adults from racial/ethnic minority groups in the United States. Data were gathered from the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 6, a nationally representative survey. The mediating role of perceived discrimination was investigated using structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis. The study found significant associations between demographic and lifestyle factors and mental health symptoms. Non-Hispanic Blacks or African Americans and Hispanics were less likely than Non-Hispanic Whites to have mental health symptoms. Individuals between the ages of 35 and 49, 50 to 64, 65 to 74, and 75 and older had lower odds of mental health symptoms. Gender differences revealed that females had a higher risk of mental health issues than males. Socioeconomic factors, such as household income and employment status, played a significant role, with higher household income and employment status being associated with a decreased likelihood of mental health symptoms. The study emphasizes the role of perceived discrimination as a mediator, suggesting that it fully mediated the association between cultural identity and mental health symptoms. These findings highlight the significance of addressing discrimination experiences in fostering the mental health of adults from diverse backgrounds. The findings highlight the need to take racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inequities, as well as cultural identity and prejudice, into account in mental health research and interventions. The identified risk and protective factors can guide interventions and policies to enhance this population's mental health.

Motivation and Use of Telehealth Among People with Depression in the United States.

The global mental health crisis, compounded by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, underscores the urgent need for accessible mental health care solutions. Telehealth services have emerged as a promising technology to address barriers to access mental health services. However, population-based studies examining telehealth utilization among individuals with depression are limited. Using data from the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) of 2022 (n = 4502), we investigated telehealth utilization among individuals diagnosed with depression in the United States. We employed multivariable logistic regression analysis to assess the association, adjusting for demographics, health behaviors, health status, trust in the medical system, and access to transportation. We also studied the factors that motivated the use of telehealth among individuals diagnosed with depression. In the multivariable adjusted logistic regression models, individuals diagnosed with depression (AOR 2.59, 95% CI 1.96-3.42) were significantly more likely to use telehealth services relative to individuals with no depression diagnosis. Other factors associated with increased telehealth use included women (AOR 1.36, 95% CI 1.07-1.72), Hispanic ethnicity (AOR 1.78, 95% CI 1.28-2.48), being married or living with a partner (AOR 1.30, 95% CI 1.05-1.62), frequent healthcare visits (AOR 2.31, 95% CI 1.71-3.11), health insurance coverage (AOR 1.86, 95% CI 1.04-3.34), confidence in self-care (AOR 1.38, 95% CI 1.07-1.78), and lack of reliable transportation (AOR 1.57, 95% CI 1.01-2.42). Major motivation factors that influenced telehealth use among individuals with depression primarily included convenience, such as reduced travel times, as well as clinicians' recommendations. Telehealth is a promising option for accessing mental health care, particularly for those with depression. Further research is needed to understand how well telehealth works and how it can be combined with traditional care, ensuring fair costs and keeping information safe.

MHealth Apps Use and Their Associations With Healthcare Decision-Making and Health Communication Among Informal Caregivers: Evidence From the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey.

The current study investigates associations between mHealth apps and healthcare decision-making and health communication among informal caregivers in the US. Cross-sectional study employing secondary data. The Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS5, Cycles 2 through 4, 2018 - 2020). Self-identified informal caregivers (n = 1386; had mHealth apps = 61.3%, female = 63.2%, some college or more in education = 80.3%) who reported owning at least a smartphone or a tablet computer (i.e., ownership of a "smart device"). Sociodemographic characteristics, reports of having mHealth apps, smart device utilization in healthcare decision-making and health communication. Accounting for the complex design features of the HINTS data, we constructed multiple hierarchical logistic regressions to compute adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI). Compared to caregivers without mHealth apps, those with the apps had higher odds of utilizing their smart devices to make a health-related decision, such as how to treat a disease or a medical condition (aOR = 1.65; 95% CI: 1.13-2.39, P < .01), or engage in health-related discussions with a healthcare provider (aOR = 2.36; 95% CI: 1.54-3.61, P < .001). Having mHealth apps was associated with a higher likelihood of using smart devices in healthcare decision-making and health communication by informal caregivers. Empowering caregivers to make informed health-related decisions and communicate effectively with healthcare providers are both crucial to health promotion and well-being. Future studies should investigate facilitators as well as barriers to using mHealth apps and smart devices in health-promoting strategies involving informal caregivers.

Knowledge, goals, and misperceptions about palliative care in adults with chronic disease or cancer.

Limited evidence investigates how knowledge, misconceptions, and beliefs about palliative care vary across patients with cancerous versus non-cancerous chronic disease. We examined the knowledge of and misconceptions about palliative care among these groups. We used weighted data from the National Cancer Institute Health Information National Trends Survey 5 (Cycle 2) for nationally representative estimates and logistic regression to adjust for respondent characteristics. We identified respondents who reported having (1) cancer ([n=585]; breast, lung, and colorectal), (2) chronic conditions ([n=543]; heart failure, lung disease, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder), or (3) neither cancer nor other chronic conditions (n=2,376). Compared to cancer respondents, chronic condition respondents were more likely to report being Black or Hispanic, report a disability, and have lower socioeconomic status. In the sample, 65.6% of cancer respondents and 72.8% chronic conditions respondents reported they had never heard of palliative care. Chronic condition respondents were significantly (p<0.05) less likely to report high palliative care knowledge than cancer respondents (9.1% vs. 16.6%, respectively). In adjusted analyses, cancer respondents had greater odds of high palliative care knowledge (odd ratio [OR]=1.70; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.01, 2.86) compared to respondents with neither cancer nor chronic disease; chronic condition respondents did not have increased odds (OR=0.96; CI=0.59, 1.54). Disparities in palliative care knowledge exist among people with non-cancerous chronic disease compared to cancer. Supportive educational efforts to boost knowledge about palliative care remains urgent and is critical for promoting equity, particularly for underserved people with chronic illnesses.

Patient Engagement in Patient Portals in Appalachia v. Surrounding U.S. Census Regions: An Analysis of HINTS (Health Information National Trends Survey) Data, 2017-2020.

Those living in the Appalachian Region face a greater number of significant health disparities than residents of other areas of the U.S. Patient portals can decrease disparities, increase health literacy, and improve health outcomes. This study explores if those living in the Appalachian Region are offered access to and use their patient portals differently than those in the surrounding U.S. Census regions. Additionally, the study aims to determine if there was a difference in reported reasons for the non-use of patient portals. A secondary analysis was completed using data from the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) (2017-2020), a nationally representative survey. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to determine differences in patient portal use between regions. There was no statistically significant difference between the Appalachian and surrounding U.S. Census regions in being offered access to patient portals. However, there was a statistically significant difference (non-weighted) between regions in the use of patient portals. Common reasons for the non-use of patient portals were a preference to speak directly to the provider and the lack of perceived need to use the portal. Providers in the Appalachian Region should be aware of the non-use of patient portals. Moreover, understanding the reported reasons for non-use may help providers tailor educational materials to increase patient portal use.

Attitudes, Perceptions, and Use of Cancer-based Genetic Testing Among Healthy U.S. Adults and Those With Prostate or Breast/Ovarian Cancer.

Differences in public awareness and uptake of genetic testing among patients with inheritable cancers are not well understood. The purpose of this study is to examine self-reported rates of undergoing cancer-specific genetic testing in patients with breast/ovarian cancer vs prostate cancer from a nationally representative sample of U.S. Secondary objectives include examining sources of genetic testing information and perceptions of genetic testing for both patient populations as well as the general public. Data from the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey 5, Cycle 4 were used to generate nationally representative estimates of adults living in the U.S. Our exposure of interest was patient reported cancer history categorized as having: (1) either breast or ovarian cancer, (2) prostate cancer, or (3) no history of cancer. χ2 testing was used to compare differences among categorical variables. In a nationally representative sample of 231.7 million adults, 3.7 million adults reported a history of breast/ovarian cancer while 1.5 million patients reported a history of prostate cancer; 52.3% of patients with breast/ovarian cancer vs 1.0% with prostate cancer reported undergoing cancer-specific genetic testing (P = .001). Patients with prostate cancer were less aware of cancer-specific genetic testing than either individuals with breast/ovarian cancer or adults without a cancer history (19.7% vs 64.7% vs 35.8%, respectively; P = .003). Health care professionals were the most common source of genetic testing information for patients with breast/ovarian cancer whereas the Internet was the most common source for patients with prostate cancer. Our results suggest a lack of awareness and limited utilization of genetic testing among patients with prostate cancer relative to breast/ovarian cancer. Patients with prostate cancer cite the Internet and social media as sources of information, which may be an avenue for more optimal dissemination of evidence-based information.

Survivors' health competence mediates the association between wearable activity tracker use and self-rated health: HINTS analysis.

Physical activity (PA) plays an important role in achieving positive self-rated health (SRH) among cancer survivors. Wearable activity trackers (WATs) can be effective for self-monitoring and tracking PA. Studies have shown that survivors who use WATs are more likely to engage in more PA. However, few studies have examined the direct and indirect associations between WAT use, PA, and SRH mediated by constructs derived from self-determination theory, perceived health competence, and perceived social relatedness for health. Data on survivors were analyzed from National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trend Survey (HINTS) Cycle 1-3 (n = 1,421). Path analysis was used to test the total, direct, and indirect associations. Previous WAT use was directly associated with PA level (standardized beta (SB): 0.07, p = 0.005) and indirectly associated with SRH (SB: 0.04, p = 0.005), mediated by perceived health competence and PA. Perceived health competence was directly associated with SRH (SB: 0.51, p < .0001) and PA (SB: 0.20, p < .0001), and perceived social relatedness for health was not significantly associated with PA (SB: 0.005, p = 0.8) or SRH (SB: 0.02, p = 0.31). Overall, these results indicate that perceived health competence significantly mediated the associations between WAT use and SRH; however, WAT use was only directly associated with PA and was not mediated. These findings support the notion that WATs may play a role in addressing SRH among cancer survivors through fostering perceived health competence by providing real-time feedback, goal setting, and opportunities for self-monitoring.

Abstract PO-162: Association between the frequency of using wearable activity trackers and minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity among cancer survivors from HINTS data

Abstract Purpose: Cancer survivors tend to exercise less after diagnosis and treatment. Given the health benefits of exercise, there is a need for innovative and engaging ways to aid in exercise participation among survivors. Wearable activity trackers (WATs) can provide avenues for self-monitoring and may enhance exercise motivation. However, less is known about the relationship between how often survivors use WATs and their amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Our purpose is to investigate this relationship and determine if it differs based on a survivor's time since diagnosis or demographic characteristics. Methods: Data was obtained from the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trend Survey (HINTS) 5 Cycles 3-4 (January 2019-April 2020) (n=1,369). Information on survivor's frequency of WAT use (daily, non-daily, no use), cancer type, time since diagnosis, age, gender, household income, body mass index, education, and race/ethnicity were used. To model the relationship between these variables and the number of self-reported weekly minutes of MVPA, we utilized a zero-inflated negative binomial Poisson (ZINBP) regression model with interactions for WAT use and race/ethnicity, and WAT use and time since diagnosis. Results: Most of the sample were female (n=735, 53.7%) and non-Hispanic White (n=961, 70.2%). Also, 44% (n=602) were college graduates or higher and 34.3% (n=664) were between the ages of 65-74 years. Skin was the most frequently reported cancer type (n=334, 24.4%) and 48.5% (n=664) reported that it had been 11+ years since their diagnosis. Results from the ZINBP model found that survivors who reported using WATs daily had an expected 3.6 times higher number of weekly MVPA minutes compared to non-daily users (OR: 3.6, 2.81-4.60, p=&amp;lt;.0001). Daily WAT users also had a predicted mean weekly MVPA of 100 minutes (80.2-124.8) compared to non-daily users (27.8 minutes, 21.8-35.5) and non-WAT users (10.1 minutes, 8.6-12). Additionally, survivors who reported 6-10 years since diagnosis had an expected 0.20 times lower number of MVPA minutes compared to those who reported 11+ years (OR 0.80, 0.79-0.94, p=0.006). The effects of WAT use on reported weekly minutes of MVPA did not differ across race/ethnicity. However, Hispanics had a lower frequency of daily use compared to their non-Hispanic White counterparts (7.1% vs.12%) and a higher frequency of reporting no use (87.9% vs. 79.6%) (p=0.04). Reporting daily WAT use was also lower among those with less educational attainment (p&amp;lt;.0001) and lower household income (p&amp;lt;.0001). Conclusions: Findings from this study indicate that reporting daily WAT use was predictive of higher MVPA and less sedentary behavior. Survivors aiming to increase exercise may benefit from integrating WATs into their daily routine. However, there is a need to better understand how to engage survivors who come from traditionally underserved racial/ethnic backgrounds including Hispanics, and those with lower income or less educational attainment in using WATs for exercise. A profile of the health information seeker in Chile: Introducing the Chilean health information environments (EIS) survey

AbstractIn recent years, many countries have sought to assess health information acquisition among their populations. The Health Information Environments (Entornos de Información de Salud; EIS) survey is the first systematic and representative study that addresses access and use of health information in Chile. Modeled after the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS), the survey included measures of general health information acquisition, source trust, and health behaviors, with a special focus on physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, and smoking cessation. The EIS survey was applied face‐to‐face in Santiago, the capital of Chile, between December 2020 and February 2021 in a sample of 1411 individuals older than 24 years. In this paper, we present the main sections of the EIS questionnaire, the application procedure, response rates, and sample characteristics. Additionally, we used EIS data to present a profile of health information seekers in Chile.

Predictors of Population Awareness of Cancer Genetic Tests: Implications for Enhancing Equity in Engaging in Cancer Prevention and Precision Medicine.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2019 to August 2019, with the survey e-mailed to 7,575 adult residents in southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Constructs from National Cancer Institute Health Information and National Trends Survey assessed cancer attitudes or beliefs, health literacy, and numeracy. Characteristics were summarized with mean ± standard deviation for numeric variables and frequency counts and percentages for categorical variables. Comparison of factors by race or ethnicity (non-Hispanic White and non-Hispanic Black) and sex was conducted by t-tests, chi-square, or Fisher's exact tests. Multivariate logistic regression models were conducted to identify factors independently predictive of GA. Of 1,557 respondents, data from 940 respondents (the mean age was 45 ± 16.2 years, 35.5% males, and 23% non-Hispanic Blacks) were analyzed. Factors associated with higher GA included female gender (P < .001), non-Hispanic White (P < .001), college education (P < .001), middle-higher income (P < .001), stronger belief in genetic basis of cancer (P < .001), lower cancer fatalism (P = .004), motivation for cancer information (P < .001), and higher numeracy (P = .002). On multivariate analysis, college education (odds ratio [OR] 1.79; 95% CI, 1.22 to 2.63), higher motivation for cancer information (OR 1.56; 95% CI, 1.17 to 2.09), stronger belief in genetics of cancer (OR 2.21; 95% CI, 1.48 to 3.30), and higher medical literacy (OR 2.21; 95% CI, 1.34 to 3.65) predicted greater GA. This population-based study conducted in the precision medicine era identified novel modifiable factors, importantly perceptions of cancer genetics and medical literacy, as predictive of GA, which informs strategies to promote equitable engagement in genetically based cancer care.

U.S. adults noticing and using menu calorie information: Analysis of the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey Data

FDA's Menu Labeling Final Rule requires covered establishments provide calorie information on menus or menu boards, among other requirements. This study describes correlates of noticing and using menu calorie information in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults before implementation of the Final Rule in May 2018. Data from the 2018 National Cancer Institute Health Information National Trends Survey was used to assess noticing menu calorie information, using menu calorie information to change menu ordering behavior, and knowledge of daily calorie needs. Regression analysis of weighted data tested associations between individual characteristics and noticing and using menu calorie information. Nearly half of adults (44%) reported noticing menu calorie information. Women, younger individuals, those who seek health information, individuals with a BMI ≥ 30, and those with higher education or higher income were more likely to report noticing menu calorie information. Among adults who reported noticing menu calorie information, three-quarters responded by ordering less (e.g., fewer calories), which equates to about one-third of the population. About 36% of women and 42% of men lacked calorie knowledge. Men with, versus without, calorie knowledge were twice as likely to report noticing menu calorie information (adjusted OR 2.23 95% CI 1.51, 3.29). Findings suggest behavioral response to menu calorie information varies and most individuals who notice the information respond by ordering less in ways that could reduce caloric intake. Future analyses could compare noticing and using menu calorie information before and after menu labeling implementation to assess the effect of policy on population behaviors.
