Prof. Chao-Sung Lai is an Asso­ciate Editor-in-Chief in charge of the Highlights Section. One article is featured in the Highlights Section, entitled “A Conversation about Quantum Literacy, The Chinese Classics and STEAM-based Education at University.” Four papers are featured in this Issue. We invited Keynote/Plenary Speakers from the “2022 IEEE Nanotechnology Conference” to contribute to the papers. The first paper is entitled “Advanced Impacts of Nanotechnology and Intelligence” by Professor Chao-Sung Lai and the research team at Chang Gung University in Taiwan. The second paper is entitled “From Green Electronics to Gray Matter and Cyborg Cells” by Professor Deblina Sarkar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The third paper is entitled “There is Plenty of Room All-Around: Highlight of Semiconductor Nanotechnology Research in My Lab” by Prof. Xiuling Li at University of Texas, Austin. The Chairs Committee and Plenary Speakers change each year in order to enrich the content and provide the participants with different views.After the success of Paris (2015) and Barcelona (2016), the Applied Nanotechnology and Nanoscience International Conference 2017 was held in Rome, on October 18th -20th.

Interface-state density estimation of n-type nanocrystalline FeSi2/p-type Si heterojunctions fabricated by pulsed laser deposition**Invited talk at 5th Thailand International Nanotechnology Conference (Nano Thailand-2016), 27–29 November 2016, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

By utilizing pulsed laser deposition (PLD), heterojunctions comprised of n-type nanocrystalline (NC) FeSi2 thin films and p-type Si substrates were fabricated at room temperature in this study. Both dark and illuminated current density–voltage (J–V) curves for the heterojunctions were measured and analyzed at room temperature. The heterojunctions demonstrated a large reverse leakage current as well as a weak near-infrared light response. Based on the analysis of the dark forward J–V curves, at the V value ⩽ 0.2 V, we show that a carrier recombination process was governed at the heterojunction interface. When the V value was > 0.2 V, the probable mechanism of carrier transportation was a space-charge limited-current process. Both the measurement and analysis for capacitance–voltage–frequency (C–V–f ) and conductance–voltage–frequency (G–V–f ) curves were performed in the applied frequency (f ) range of 50 kHz–2 MHz at room temperature. From the C–V–f and G–V–f curves, the density of interface states (Nss) for the heterojunctions was computed by using the Hill–Coleman method. The Nss values were 9.19 × 1012 eV−1 cm−2 at 2 MHz and 3.15 × 1014 eV–1 cm–2 at 50 kHz, which proved the existence of interface states at the heterojunction interface. These interface states are the probable cause of the degraded electrical performance in the heterojunctions.

Characterization and x-ray absorption spectroscopy of ilmenite nanoparticles derived from natural ilmenite ore via acid-assisted mechanical ball-milling process**Invited talk at 5th Thailand International Nanotechnology Conference (Nano Thailand-2016), 27–29 November 2016, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

In this work activated ilmenite nanoparticles were prepared by chemical-assisted in mechanical ball-milling process from ilmenite ore as starting raw material. The effect of milling process on their phase composition, particle size, surface morphology and local structure were investigated. Phase identification and crystalline structure of ilmenite mineral, milled samples and subsequent leached residues were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Meanwhile, the distorted octahedral structure and the oxidation state of relevant elements in ilmenite ore and activated ilmenite obtained by different process conditions were analyzed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Particle size and morphologies of the samples were monitored by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Three dominant peaks of TiO2 rutile, FeTiO3, and Fe2TiO4 are obviously adulterated in XRD patterns after mechanical milling with water and acid solution when comparing to precursor mineral. However, the contaminated phase of FeTiO3 and Fe2TiO4 was readily decreased by acid-assisted mechanical ball-milling. The enhancement in leaching process of ilmenite residue after milling can be obtained with sulfuric acid. This result suggests that iron contaminated phase could be leached from the sample resulting to the decrease in Fe environment around Ti atom.

The effect of green synthesized gold nanoparticles on rice germination and roots**Contribution at 5th Thailand International Nanotechnology Conference (Nano Thailand-2016), 27–29 November 2016, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

In this paper, gold nanoparticles were synthesized by means of a green approach with Tiliacora triandra leaf extracts under different conditions. No additional reducing or capping agents were employed. The gold nanoparticles were characterized using UV–visible spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Gold nanoparticles synthesized at temperature of 80 °C were further used to treat rice (Oryza sativa) grains at different concentrations (0, 10, 100, 500, 1000, 2000 mg l−1) for one week. While germination percentages were high (95–98.38%), a slight decrease in root and shoot lengths relative to the control was observed. Phytotoxicity results indicated that the plant synthesized gold nanoparticles were of minimal toxicity to rice seedlings. Increases in cell death, hydrogen peroxide formation and lipid peroxidation in roots and shoots were noted. However, these increases were not statistically significant. The overall results confirmed that Tiliacora triandra synthesized gold nanoparticles are biocompatible and can be potentially used as nanocarriers in agriculture.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of bacterial cellulose—ferrite (MFe2O4, M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu) nanocomposites prepared by co-precipitation method**Invited talk at 5th Thailand International Nanotechnology Conference (Nano Thailand-2016), 27–29 November 2016, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The magnetic nanocomposites based on bacterial cellulose (BC) matrix and ferrite (MFe2O4, M = Mn, Co, Ni and Cu) nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated. The never-dried and freeze-dried BC nanofibrils were used as templates and a co-precipitation method was applied for NPs synthesis. The nanocomposites were either freeze-dried or annealed before subjected to characterization. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that only MnFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 NPs could be successfully incorporated in the BC nanostructures. The results also indicated that the BC template should be freeze-dried prior to the co-precipitation process. The magnetic measurement by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) showed that the strongest ferromagnetic signal was found for BC-CoFe2O4 nanocomposites. The morphological investigation by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed the largest volume fraction of NPs in the BC-CoFe2O4 sample which was complimentary to the magnetic property measurement. Annealing resulted in the collapse of the opened nanostructure of the BC composites.

Dehydration of D-xylose to furfural using acid-functionalized MWCNTs catalysts**Invited talk at 5th Thailand International Nanotechnology Conference (Nano Thailand-2016), 27–29 November 2016, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Acid-functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) catalysts were prepared by a wet chemical sonication with various acid solutions, i.e. H2SO4, H3PO4, HNO3, and HCl. Sulfonic groups and carboxyl groups were detected on MWCNTs with H2SO4 treatment (s-MWCNTs), while only carboxyl groups were presented from other acid treatments. The catalytic dehydration of D-xylose into furfural was evaluated using a batch reactor at 170 °C for 3 h under N2 pressure of 15 bar. The highest furfural selectivity was achieved around 57% by s-MWCNTs catalyst, suggesting a positive role of the sulfonic functionalized groups. The effect of Co species was related to their Lewis acid property resulting in the enhancement of xylose conversion with low selectivity to furfural product.

Structural studies of advanced functional materials by synchrotron-based x-ray absorption spectroscopy: BL5.2 at SLRI, Thailand**Invited talk at 5th Thailand International Nanotechnology Conference (Nano Thailand-2016), 27–29 November 2016, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

This paper highlights the use of the x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as a local structural tool unlike x-ray diffraction for selected atoms in advanced functional materials including energy storage materials, dielectric materials and thermoelectric materials. The information concerning the oxidation states and local atomic structure around probing atoms will be revealed using x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). The XAS beamline: BL5.2 at the Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI) (public organization), Thailand, and its characteristic including available of measured energy ranges, examples of measured spectra of Mg, S and Ti K-edge XAS are also presented. In addition, in situ XAS set up and experiment carried out at this beamline are also outlined.

Rapid synthesis of tin oxide nanostructures by microwave-assisted thermal oxidation for sensor applications**Invited talk at 5th Thailand International Nanotechnology Conference (Nano Thailand-2016), 27–29 November 2016, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

In the present work nanostructures of tin oxides were synthesized by a microwave-assisted thermal oxidation. Tin precursor powder was loaded into a cylindrical quartz tube and further radiated in a microwave oven. The as-synthesized products were characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and x-ray diffractometer. The results showed that two different morphologies of SnO2 microwires (MWs) and nanoparticles (NPs) were obtained in one minute of microwave radiation under atmospheric ambient. A few tens of the SnO2 MWs with the length of 10–50 µm were found. Some parts of the MWs were decorated with the SnO2 NPs. However, most of the products were SnO2 NPs with the diameter ranging from 30–200 nm. Preparation under loosely closed system lead to mixed phase SnO–SnO2 NPs with diameter of 30–200 nm. The single-phase of SnO2 could be obtained by mixing the Sn precursor powders with CuO2. The products were mostly found to be SnO2 nanowires (NWs) and MWs. The diameter of SnO2 NWs was less than 50 nm. The SnO2 NPs, MWs, and NWs were in the cassiterite rutile structure phase. The SnO NPs was in the tetragonal structure phase. The growth direction of the SnO2 NWs was observed in (1 1 0) and (2 2 1) direction. The ethanol sensor performance of these tin oxide nanostructures showed that the SnO–SnO2 NPs exhibited extremely high sensitivity.

What do we still need to understand to commercialize cellulose nanomaterials?†

Cellulose nanomaterials (CNM) have the potential to become predominant nanoparticles utilized in materials engineering fields ranging from flexible electronic supports and tissue scaffolds to nanocomposite reinforcement materials and aerogels for oil capture. The potential of this emerging technological material is currently hindered by the inability efficiently to produce consistent cellulose nanomaterial-based products on an industrial scale. To quantify key properties of CNM (most notably surface properties, particle size and degree of crystallinity), several measurement methods and techniques have been employed by researchers. However, the currently available measurement techniques are too expensive (in terms of both time and money) to be applicable for high-throughput, full-scale industrial process monitoring. In an effort to highlight and identify the most critical measurement requirements, a workshop was conducted by National Institute of Standards and Technology in conjunction with the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry’s Nanotechnology Conference in 2014. This workshop brought together key researchers and manufacturers at the forefront of CNM research and production. The goal of the workshop was to discuss the existing deficiencies in CNM metrology, as well as to inform and inspire measurement science development in the field.

Nanoelectronics Research Gaps and Recommendations: A Report from the International Planning Working Group on Nanoelectronics (IPWGN) [Commentary

Nanotechnology exploded in scientific publications in the year 2000. It became clear in the subsequent years that the magnitude and opportunities offered in nanotechnology research and development exceeded the research capabilities of any single entity or any single region, and a new cooperative approach was needed. The first step to this approach consisted of fostering communication among leading researchers with the intent of facilitating subsequent cooperation. As such and as applicable to semiconductors and nanoelectronics, international cooperation and research coordination was instigated via the International Nanotechnology Conference on Communication and Cooperation (INC) initiative, leading the quest to narrow "research to a new product cycle" via a coordinated research strategy and funding initiatives towards solving the grand challenges.

The making of nanotechnology: exposing high-school students to behind-the-scenes of nanotechnology by inviting them to a nanotechnology conference

AbstractNanotechnology has been recognized in the 21st century as a new and modern science field. It is therefore necessary to update school science by integrating nanotechnology-related concepts into curricula for students in order to prepare an educated workforce and a responsible generation that will make scientifically literate decisions. The current study examines a unique way to address the teaching of the concept “the making of nanotechnology,” one of eight essential concepts of nanotechnology that should be taught in high school and at the undergraduate level, which were identified by a recent study. The concepts’ definition and explanation are presented. The main goal of the study is to learn how students’ participation in a one-day nanotechnology conference “NanoIsrael 2014”

Molecular-Dynamics Study Examines Effect of Nanoparticles on Oil/Water Flow

The paper has not been peer reviewed. Experiments on oil/water nanoparticle flow behavior in confined clay nanochannels were conducted with molecular-dynamics simulations. Three sizes of nanochannels and different numbers of nanoparticles were considered. The results show that the pressure to drive the oil/water binary mixture through a periodic confined channel increases dramatically with the reduction of the channel size. In the absence of nanoparticles, the pressure increases with the propelled displacement. An opposite behavior is observed in the oil/water system mixed with a small amount of nanoparticles: The pressure decreases with the increase of the displacement. The findings from molecular-dynamics simulations may elucidate the role of nanoparticles in the transport of oil in nanoscale porous media. Introduction One of the more promising applications of nanotechnology in the field of oil and gas, in particular for enhanced oil recovery and drilling, is the creation of a new generation of fluids. Nanofluids are a class of fluids engineered by dispersing nanoparticles (nanofibers, nanotubes, nanowires, or nanodrops) in base fluids. Nanofluids were first recognized because of their thermal properties. The most commonly studied nanoparticles for enhanced oil recovery are the spherical silica nanoparticles with a diameter in the range of several to tens of nanometers. Functionalized nanoparticles can form a highly stable emulsion to determine the oil-saturation situation, improve the oil-flow mechanism, and identify the location of bypassed oil. Although the exact interface mechanisms are still unclear, it is generally expected that silica nanoparticles will also reduce the surface tension between oil and rock and enhance the depletion of oil from porous media. Before full-scale deployment of silica nanoparticles occurs, many issues remain to be resolved, such as how the particles behave in a reservoir and how to design the appropriate silica nanoparticles. This study focused on the fundamental understanding of the role of silica nanoparticles in the oil/water binary mixture in a confined nanochannel. Structure and Simulation Details Rocks that are rich in kaolinite are known as kaolin clay. Kaolinite has the chemical composition Al4Si4O10(OH)8(Fig. 1). Kaolinite is a layer clay with neutral charge, and the asymmetric structure allows the formation of hydrogen bonds between consecutive layers.
