A Study on the Influence of Background Music on Students’ Study Habits, Concentration Levels, and Academic Focus

In recent years, music has become a more prevalent accompaniment for students during their study sessions. Thanks to the abundance of streaming platforms and mobile devices, learners can easily access a wide range of music genres, including instrumental and lo-fi beats, pop, classical, and ambient sounds. Numerous students hold the belief that listening to music while studying aids in their concentration, motivation, and stress management. Nevertheless, there is still disagreement, and the exact influence of music on academic performance remains uncertain. The objective of this study is to investigate the connection between music and study habits among students, with a particular emphasis on concentration, memory retention, time management, and emotional regulation. The study aims to investigate whether listening to music has a positive, negative, or neutral impact on a student's capacity to complete academic assignments. The study will also examine the music preferences of students during their study sessions and determine if certain genres are more advantageous for specific tasks, such as reading, writing, or problem-solving. Information will be gathered using an online survey created by Google, which will be shared with a group of 50-100 students from various academic disciplines. The survey will consist of a combination of closed-ended and open-ended questions to collect comprehensive data on study habits, music choices, and perceived results. The responses will be examined using Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets to identify any patterns or correlations. The anticipated results of the study suggest that instrumental and slow-tempo music, like lo-fi or classical, are more likely to enhance concentration and minimize distractions, whereas lyrical or loud music may hinder tasks that involve reading or memorization.

Music Streaming Platform Based on Speech & Facial Emotion Analysis

Abstract: Traditional recommendation systems rely mostly on user-initiated historical listening patterns, genre classifying, or collaborative-filtering recommendations, thus totally disregarding the mood of a user. In a very real sense, emotions are fluid; and at any moment, they can go on and dominate someone's music choice. This work proposes a music streaming platform that considers real-time mood inputs to make music recommendations based on facial expression and speech analysis. By merging CNNs with facial emotion detection and LSTMs with speech emotion recognition, the system can track every multimodal emotional input with the utmost precision. This paper presents the technical implementation, evaluation criteria, and user feedback of this system thus extending the domain of affective computing and intelligent human-computer interaction.

Dynamic Node Graph Neural Network for Multimodal Music Recommendation

Music recommendation systems are becoming increasingly popular among users. With the explosive growth of songs on the web, most music streaming platforms have launched online music listening services, providing millions of music choices for users. However, how to accurately recommend songs for users that match their preferences has become a challenging challenge, which we call music cold-start matching. In this paper, we delve into the multimodal information of music and take full advantage of the unique strengths of graph neural networks in capturing the collaborative filtering relationship between users and music. However, due to the inherent characteristics of graph neural networks, it is difficult to easily add new nodes to perform subsequent tasks in the inference phase. Therefore, we creatively propose a novel neural network architecture, the dynamic node graph neural network. In the training phase, we adopt a knowledge distillation strategy, using the graph neural network as the teacher model and the dynamic node graph neural network as the student model, thus enabling the student model to comprehensively learn and master the collaborative filtering relationship between users and music. In the inference phase, we use the trained dynamic node graph neural network to match new music accurately. After extensive experimental validation on the MSD public dataset, our approach demonstrates excellent effectiveness and efficiency, bringing users a more accurate music recommendation experience. Experimental results show that the state-of-the-art method improves our model by an average of 11.8% on the complete dataset and 7.1% on the cold-start problem compared to the best method, proving the effectiveness of our model.

A song for each moment: Identifying listening modes as reflexive practices in music streaming

In addition to personal and contextual reasons for listening to music, users of music streaming services also receive constant recommendations from these platforms’ algorithmic systems. In this article, I explore, from a critical realist perspective, how users reflect on and decide what to listen to in various contexts. First, the article develops a framework for understanding reflexive decision-making in the context of music streaming. Then, based on interviews with Spotify users and an analysis of their donated streaming histories, three listening modes are identified based on what motivates music choices and how the users interact with the platform's content. Findings suggest that in addition to the platform's recommendations, users reflexively choose music to fit their contexts, emotions and goals based on their previous experiences, striking a balance between conscious and habitual music listening.

Music Recommendation System Based on Facial Expression

In the modern digital age, where users face an overwhelming array of music choices, personalized recommendations are crucial for enhancing the listening experience. Studies indicate that music significantly influences emotions, affecting mood, stress levels, and overall well-being. Over 60% of users struggle with decision fatigue when selecting music from their vast collections. To address this challenge, we propose a real-time music recommendation system that utilizes facial expression analysis through deep learning. The system employs a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained on the FER-2013 dataset to analyze facial expressions captured via a webcam. Detected emotions are processed in real time, enabling dynamic music selection. Flask is used for backend API development and server management. Supabase functions as a cloud database. This emotion-driven approach streamlines the music selection process, saving time and reducing the stress of manual browsing.

Twitter-MusicPD: melody of minds - navigating user-level data on multiple mental health disorders and music preferences

Social media platforms have become integral spaces for individuals to express emotions, seek advice, and disclose mental health conditions. While existing research primarily focuses on analyzing textual content for predicting mental disorders, music listening, as a fundamental aspect of human experience, has gained attention for its potential to influence psychological well-being. This paper introduces the Twitter-Music-Psychological Disorder (Twitter-MusicPD) dataset, which includes data from 5767 music-listening Twitter users, covering both individuals with six self-reported psychological disorders and non-disordered users, along with a matched control group of 38,086 non-music-listening Twitter users across six disordered and non-disordered groups. The dataset spans from August 2007 to May 2022, comprising 8,976,628 English tweets reported as embeddings and the content of 78,413 music tracks shared by users. Detailed information on music tracks, including sources, titles, artists and associated lyrics, is provided, along with sentiments and emotions related to the music. Twitter-MusicPD serves as a comprehensive resource for investigating the relationships between Twitter engagement, music choices, and psychological well-being, offering insights into how tweeting behaviors and music preferences evolve over time. Our data is available at: https://github.com/szamani20/Twitter-MusicPD_Melody-of-Minds.

Exploring the feasibility of collecting music and wellbeing data to examine intentional listening using a mobile-ESM application.

This brief report describes a small-scale feasibility study investigating the use of mobile Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM) for collecting data on intentionality in music listening for well-being. Sixteen university students used the MuPsych app (Randall and Rickard, 2012) for a 2-week pilot study (resulting in 263 music listening episode responses), with seven participating in semi-structured follow-up interviews. Data was collected at baseline and then triggered by mobile music listening episodes at 0, 5 and 20 min. Baseline measures were of wellbeing; and listening episode data included music choice, purpose, context, and mood. After assigning listeners to languishing, moderate, or flourishing wellbeing categories, differences became apparent in participants' experiences of listening to music. Several challenges to feasibility were experienced in self-selection and biased reporting by participants as well as technological limitations of data collection techniques. Recommendations for future ESM studies of everyday music listening are offered.

Choix musicaux dans le film d’animation « Aya de Yopougon » : influence narrative et représentation culturelle ?

The film is not just visual. It’s also auditory. Its auditory aspect encompasses three (03) components: Voice-Over and/or in (dialogue); sound effects; and music. Regarding music, it is established that its creation for thefilm is not done ex-nihilo. It participates in the film’s framework as it forms, along with the other auditory and visual components, an osmosis that anticipates an architectural design aimed at conveying a message. However, while there is abundant literature on the creative and decision-making processes guiding music choices in European and American cinema, this is not the case for African cinema. This article attempts to fill this documentary gap through musical analyses of certain sequences from the animated film «Aya de Yopougon.» The study examines the creative and decision-making processes from which the musical ideas contained in this Ivorian film emerge, thereby providing some specific technico-speculative keys to African cinema in terms of film music.KEYWORDS:Animated film –Film music –Musical semiotic analysis –African cinema.

Analysis of the Differences in Music Perception under Different Emotional Contexts

Music, as a unique art form, plays a significant role in emotional perception and expression. This paper explores the differences in music perception and its underlying mechanisms under different emotional contexts. By analyzing the varying perceptions of music rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, and timbre in positive and negative emotional states, the study reveals the profound impact of emotional states on the music perception process. The research finds that positive emotions tend to promote a preference for fast tempos, high pitches, and harmonious harmonies, while negative emotions enhance the perception of low, slow rhythms and emotionally deep timbres. Additionally, the role of emotional regulation in music perception is examined in detail, indicating that music can not only serve as a tool for emotional regulation but also influence an individual’s music choices and perceptions through different emotional regulation strategies. The findings of this study hold significant practical value for fields such as music therapy, education, entertainment, and cross-cultural music education, offering new perspectives for future research and practice.

함춘호의 산조 협주곡과 어쿠스틱 기타 비르투오서티(Virtuosity)

This study describes the performing background, musical characteristics, and significance of Ham, Chun-ho's guitar sanjo concerto (2015), which appeared for the first time in the context of sanjo history. It examines how the forms of sanjo and concerto are realized with the foreign instrument, the guitar, and how the performer’s originality experience, and insights are reflected in the work. Ham, Chun-ho actively embraced the traditional form of sanjo in his compositions for guitar but utilized it in a very limited way, aiming to present the expressive possibilities of the guitar in innovative manners. He incorporated the continuous structure(Jangdan-continuum) of sanjo form and microtones while also capturing the effects that could be obtained by partially using the sigimsae of the Yukjabaegi scale and an alternation between duple and triple rhythms. However, he embraced the typical sanjo form but prioritized his own logic-specifically, the musical expression of emotions—over traditional musical logic. Consequently, he contrasted the first half of the piece, characterized by lyrical and song-like phrases, with the second half, which features leaps and intense instrumental phrases. To effectively express this opposing structure, he employed multiple instruments with different tuning and using a bottleneck to control timbre and technique. Furthermore, to address the dynamic imbalance between the orchestra and the acoustic guitar, he installed a pickup device to clearly express softer dynamics, particularly expressing “p”, and used a capo to enable the guitar to respond quickly to the orchestraAlthough Ham, Chun-ho did not showcase acrobatic playing techniques in his guitar sanjo concerto, he reflected his identity of a session guitarist in the composition. Notably, the presence of a solo section accompanied by the orchestra from the beginning expands the limited use of the session guitar by utilizing the concerto style. Additionally, distributing performing three guitars capable of electronic amplification across different locations, each with distinct tuning and playing techniques, strategically demonstrates the potential of the acoustic session guitar. This can be said to be closely related to his experiences and insights gained from working as a session guitarist. In this way, amid the contrasting demands of tradition and new composition, his numerous musical choices illustrate that a reinterpretation of sanjo. Therefore, it can be concluded that through this work, he confirmed the virtuosity of the acoustic session guitar.

To Calm and to Commend: Veterans' Musical Preferences Anticipating End of Life.

Since World War 1, physicians have noted the calming effects of music for military personnel experiencing "shell shock," Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or stress. Researchers have documented that stress or PTSD-like symptoms re-emerge for veterans at the end of life, triggered by hospital-like settings, co-occurring conditions, and debilitation. Dying veterans also face integration of their service and combat experiences into summations of their lives. In response, there has been a national movement for bedside ceremonies, often with music, to honor veterans. The project elicited veterans' musical preferences for calming and for music for honor services, using non-hospitalized veterans as surrogates for veterans in hospice. Respondent-driven sampling protected confidentiality and likely resulted in participants being representative of US veterans in terms of ethnicity, gender, and military branch. Recruitment materials contained all elements of informed consent, with consent collected in the introduction to the online survey. The survey had embedded links to musical performances, as well as write-in musical choices, and allowed US veterans from the Army, Air Force, Marines, and Navy to note their preferences both for music that was calming and music to be used in honor ceremonies. Online queries also asked about stress during service, usual coping strategies for stress, and current or past symptoms of PTSD. Links to hot lines were provided. The study was approved by the University of Arizona Institutional Review Board. Listening to music was the most prevalent of the 20 coping mechanisms for stress in this sample of 30 veterans. Musical preferences were stable across age groups. For calming, music at resting heartbeat rhythms was chosen. Music from early adulthood or from the timelessness of the classics was selected most often. Modern music with lyrics has themes of duty, affirmation, gratitude, and relief. The nearly universal soothing effects of lullabies were recognized. For music for honor ceremonies, desires were often independent of the military branch. Patriotic songs, or songs recognizing multiple service branches, or with themes of peace and affirmation were more often chosen than music from a particular service branch. Listening to music is a frequent coping strategy for veterans. While themes representing classical music choices are readily available in anthologies, other music chosen by this sample is not; the veterans' preferred music is rarely found in compilations of popular, movie, and TV music. Hospice and hospital intakes that document and communicate veterans' musical preferences to music therapists and therapeutic musicians may better support service men and women. Further research may examine veterans' preference for live or recorded music at end of life given the importance of meaning-making and the presence of others documented in the literature.

Musical Perception and Social Context in emotional memory consolidation

Introduction: Music-based interventions in cognitive neuroscience research have gained prominence.(1,2) Previous studies have shown that musical perception following learning impacts consolidation, improving long-term memory.(3,4,5,6) Additionally, it has been evidenced that social context affects the emotional experience induced through music, generating more intense positive emotions.(7) The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of musical perception and social context on the consolidation of emotional memory in adults.Methodology: Sixty-four participants aged between 20 and 50 years (M = 26.08, SD = 1.22) viewed 36 images (positive, negative, and neutral), and then were assigned to one of four conditions for three minutes: listening to an activating piece of music alone; or with company; silence alone; or with company. Long and short memory was evaluated, and other variables such as liking and familiarity with the music were assessed. Results: There was a trend for groups that listened to music to have a better memory of positive images compared to groups that were in silence. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between musical liking and memory of positive images. Conclusions: Listening to music with company may improve the memory of emotional images similar to what occurs when listening alone. It is necessary to confirm this by controlling context variables such as musical choice, the application of the protocol in-person, and the bond with the company
