Handicaps other than deafness often constitute a problem in the educational habilitation of children with hearing disorders. Among the 175 deaf children of the present material additional handicaps occurred in 54%. These included central disorders of speech perception, mental deficiency, psychíc disorders, visual disturbances, convulsions, athethosis and cerebral palsy, etc. All children were clinically examined by a team of audiologist, phoniatrician, otologist, pediatrician, pediatric neurologist, psychologist, and speech therapeut. The follow-up of educational habilitation showed that the presence of multiple handicaps decreased the possibilities of the children to attend schools appropriate to them in view of their hearing loss and language abilities alone. The lack of the educational success with children with multiple handicaps was shown to be due to psychological and social problems rather than hearing and speech problems.
