GAMBARAN TINGKAT PENGETAHUAN IBU- IBU YANG MEMILIKI KEBIASAAN MEROKOK TENTANG KESEHATAN GIGI DAN MULUT TERHADAP OHI-S DI KELURAHAN TANAH MERAH KECAMATAN BINJAI SELATAN

Smoking habits can cause poor dental and oral. The knowledge of the mothers about oral and dental health is in low level, it is proven by the poor awareness of the mothers in maintaining their oral and dental hygiene. This study is descriptive research and it is to find out the description of the knowledge level of the mothers having smoking habit about dental and mouth health toward OHI-S in Tanah Merah, South Binjai sub-district. This study is conducted in survey method where the number of the samples is 25 people. The result of the research showed the knowledge level of the smoking mothers about dental and mouth health toward OHI-S in Tanah Merah, South Binjai sub –district that is as follow : 9 people (36%) are in good category, 16 people (64 %) are in moderate category and the OHI-S average is 3.4 which is in poor criteria. The conclusion of this research is that the knowledge level of the smoking mothers is in medium category, but the action of maintaining the dental and mouth hygiene is in poor category.

HUBUNGAN PENGETAHUAN DAN SIKAP ANAK KELAS V TERHADAP TERJADINYA KARIES GIGI DI SD NEGERI 131 PALEMBANG

Health is the most important thing in people life, physically and mentally. Besides body�s health in general teeth and mouth health also must get special attention, because teeth and mouth health affects body�s health. Dental caries is a pathological process that occurs because of the interaction of factors inside and outside factors such as behavioral factors, knowledge and attitudes toward maintenance of teeth and mouth. The research aimed to understand the relationship between knowledge and attitude of grade V students of 131 elementary school Palembang toward the teeth caries. The method used in this research is analitical method by using cross sectional design, taking samples technique by using total population way and the samples are 167 student of grade V. From The result of this study it was know that, 33.5% of children who have a low knowledge, 43.1% of children have negative attitudes and 59.3% of children experienced dental caries. From Chi square test results showed no relationship between knowledge of children with dental caries with p value of 0.036; there is a correlation between the attitudes of children with dental ceries with p value, 0.000. In order to decrease the number of teeth caries among students, it is hoped that school make a school teeth health unit (UKGS) and some mediators and teachers need to make a teeth health socialization so that the students can get more knowledge about teeth and mout health. Self-report oral health and disease experience among adults in China and NZ.

Differences in oral health perceptions complicate comparisons of self-reported oral health in countries with considerably different cultures, traditions, and dental care. We compared it in China and New Zealand (NZ), to determine whether adults in those countries differ in how self-report oral health item responses distinguish those with different clinical oral disease states. Analysis of representative data on dentate 35-44-year-olds and 65-74-year-olds from the 3rd National Oral Health Survey of China in 2005 (for Sichuan province) and the NZ Oral Health Survey in 2009. Self-rated oral health in the Chinese survey was assessed by asking "Overall, how would you rate your oral health?"(responses: "Very poor," "Poor," "Fair," "Good," and "Very good"). The NZ survey asked "How would you describe the health of your teeth or mouth?" (responses: "Excellent," "Very good," "Good," "Fair," or "Poor"). To enable comparability, these were combined to create a four-category ordinal measure of self-reported oral health. The slope index of inequality (SII) and the relative index of inequality (RII) determined the extent to which the four-category self-report item distinguished those with better or poorer oral status. A higher proportion of Chinese than NZ 35-44-year-olds rated their oral health as poor or fair, and the NZ proportion rating their oral health as very good was four times that observed among Chinese. The 65-74-year-olds differed even more in their overall responses. For most aspects of clinical disease experience, the two populations were responding similarly to the self-reported oral health item, although the SII and RII values were more pronounced among 35-44-year-olds in NZ than in China; among 65-74-year-olds, both countries were more similar. Chinese and NZ adults' self-ratings reflect their oral disease experience in largely similar ways, despite considerable absolute differences. These findings support the cross-cultural applicability of self-report oral health measures.

The Perceptions of Dentists Working in Saudi Arabia of the Utility of Different Restoration Options for a Shortened Dental Arch in Patients of Different Ages.

This study aimed to assess dentists' views of the utility of an unrestored shortened dental arch (SDA) compared to the utility of various prosthetic treatment options. A total of 142 dentists working at four sites in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were interviewed and presented with 18 scenarios for patients of different ages with SDAs that lost molar teeth. Participants were asked to indicate on a standardized visual analog scale (VAS) how they would value the health of the patient's mouth if the SDAs were left unrestored or restored with five prosthetic dental restorations. With a utility value of 0.0 representing the worst possible health state for a mouth and 1.0 representing the best, dentists' mean utility value for unrestored SDAs was 0.43 (standard deviation [SD] = 0.28). For implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (ISFDPs), cobalt-chromium removable partial dentures (RPDs), acrylic RPDs, cantilever conventional fixed dental prostheses (CFDPs), and cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs), the mean utility values were 0.64 (SD = 0.27), 0.54 (SD = 0.20), 0.48 (SD = 0.20), 0.42 (SD = 0.28), and 0.39 (SD = 0.27), respectively. Neither patient age nor dentists' clinical experience had an impact on dentists' perceptions of the utility of unrestored SDAs and outcomes of this treatment concept (P > .01). Restoration of SDAs by ISFDPs received the highest utility value among the surveyed group of dentists. Although the assigned value for unrestored SDAs was low, this value was comparable to the value of SDAs that were restored by acrylic RPDs or cantilever FDPs of either type.

Application of innovative UKGS program “irene’s donuts” to oral and dental health behavior and OHI-s of children with special needs in SLB Negeri Semarang

TITLE Application of innovative UKGS program “irene’s donuts” to oral and dental health behavior and OHI-s of children with special needs in SLB Negeri Semarang ABSTRACT Children with Special Needs (CSN) are children who have abnormalities in the context of education, they should get a special care of the teeth and mouth health from both the teachers at school and the parents at home. Most elementary school CSN in The State Special Elementary School of Semarang 77% suffered from dental caries, so it needs special attention. Irene's Donuts Oral Health School Innovative Program is an innovation program using Irene's Donut's method that have been proven in reducing the risk of caries in the elementary school, so it needs to be tested to primary level CSN The State Special Elementary School of Semarang. The type of this research is a quasi experimental study with a non-randomized pretest-posttest equivalent control group design. This study was conducted on 76 respondents. There were 38 respondents in the control group and 38 respondents in the experimental group. The Pre and Post Test result of Dependent T Test against the Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) shows that the p value is 0.000. The results of Mann-Whitney test on the behavior of dental and oral health care in the control group and the treatment group shows 0.024 of p value. The conclusion from this research is that there is a difference between the OHI-S before and after the application of Innovative Irene's Donuts program to the CSN in The State Special Elementary School of Semarang. Moreover, there is a difference between the behavior of the maintenance of the oral health before and after the application of the program. THE RELATION OF PARENTS’ BEHAVIOUR ON DENTAL HEALTH TOWARD THEIR DEAF CHILDREN’S ORAL HEALTH STATUS: CASE STUDY IN SDLB ABC SWADAYA KALIWUNGU KENDAL

TITLE THE RELATION OF PARENTS’ BEHAVIOUR ON DENTAL HEALTH TOWARD THEIR DEAF CHILDREN’S ORAL HEALTH STATUS: CASE STUDY IN SDLB ABC SWADAYA KALIWUNGU KENDAL ABSTRACT The Growth and the development of deaf children often cause the health problems, one of the problem is oral health. Factors that affect the level of oral health are knowledge, attitude and action. The deaf children dental health is influenced by the parents’ behavior to maintenance of oral health. The purpose of this research was to describe the relation of knowledge, attitudes and actions of parents about dental and oral health on dental health status of the deaf children. The research method is observational analytic, with cross sectional research approach. The samples in this research was 30 people, it was total sampling for sampling technique. It was univariate analysis, bivariate analysis (chi square) and multivariate analysis (logistic regression) for data analysis. The results of statistical tests showed that parent’s knowledge, attitudes and actions about dental and oral health have a significant relation with dental and mouth health status (DMF-T) of the deaf children, with p-value 0,003 (p < 0.05). The most related variable with dental and mouth health status (DMF-T) in deaf children is the attitude was p = 0.002. The conclusion of this research is parent’s knowledge, attitudes and actions about oral and dental health related to dental and mouth health status (DMF-T) of the deaf children. Attitude is the most related variable to dental and mouth health status (DMF-T).

TINGKAT PENGETAHUAN KESEHATAN GIGI DAN MULUT PADA GURU DAN MURID SDN 16 (UKGS) DAN SDN 46 (TANPA UKGS) DI KOTA BANDA ACEH

Knowledge in the field of oral health provides an understanding of how to do maintenance and prevention of dental and oral diseases. Teachers can act as a source of information for students so that they are expected to have sufficient knowledge about dental and oral health applied in the UKGS program. The purpose of this study was to find out how the level of oral and dental knowledge in teachers and students in primary schools with UKGS and without UKGS. The type of research is descriptive. The sampling technique used total sampling method with total research subjects that fulfilled inclusion criteria of 39 teachers and 80 students, consisting of 24 teachers and 64 students in SDN 16 (UKGS) and 15 teachers and 16 students in SDN 46 (without UKGS). Measurement of dental and oral health knowledge was done by using questionnaire. The results showed that the level of knowledge of dental and mouth health of teachers and students at SDN 16 (UKGS) and SDN 46 (without UKGS) had good category with 87.5% percentage for teachers and 82.8% for pupils in SDN 16 (UKGS ) and 80% for teachers and 68.8% for students in SDN 46 (without UKGS). Oral Health Status among Egyptian Preschool Children

Background: Oral health is a part of general health, as oral cavity is considered a gateway of the body. Health of dentition and mouth play a major role in the children’s life. Aims: this study aimed to obtain updated information of oral health statues including dental caries situation, gingival condition and traumatic injuries in Egyptian preschool children. Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in Mansoura city on one thousand children with an age from 3 - 6 years who were attending private and public kindergarten. Children were examined for dental caries using dmft index of primary teeth. Gingival condition was assessed using PMA index (papillary, marginal, and attached gingiva). Upper and lower primary anterior teeth were assessed for signs of dental trauma: treated dental injury, enamel fracture, enamel/dentin fracture, pulp injury, and missing teeth due to trauma. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis and Chi- square tests. Results: the prevalence of dental caries in preschool children was 61.4%, while the mean dmft was (2.930±3.281) in males and (2.332±2.852) in females. However, prevalence of gingival inflammation was 7.4%, and dental trauma was 10%. Enamel fracture was the highest followed by dentin fracture and discoloration. Conclusion: there was high prevalence of dental caries, while the prevalence of gingival inflammation and traumatic injury were low among Egyptian preschool children.

SAÚDE BUCAL E QUALIDADE DE VIDA NO PACIENTE PÓS-RADIOTERAPIA DE CÂNCER DE CABEÇA E PESCOÇO

A radioterapia no paciente com câncer de cabeça e pescoço pode resultar em muitas consequências negativas, como a hipossalivação. Sem a proteção da saliva há um risco aumentado de cáries e doenças periodontais que podem causar a perda dentária e consequentemente influenciam no impacto da saúde bucal na qualidade de vida. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o impacto da saúde bucal na qualidade de vida dos pacientes pós-radioterapia de câncer de cabeça e pescoço por meio das avaliações de fluxo salivar e edentulismo. A amostra foi composta por 19 indivíduos com idade a partir de 18 anos e diagnóstico de câncer de cabeça e pescoço. A radioterapia do tipo Intensidade Modulada (IMRT) foi o tratamento mais realizado 16 (68,4%). Referente ao tempo pós-radioterapia, nove (47,4%) haviam terminado o tratamento há um ano. Quanto ao impacto da saúde bucal na qualidade de vida, 15 (79,9%) apresentaram algum impacto. O maior número de pacientes sete (36,8 %) não usava algum tipo de prótese e nove (47,4%) necessitavam de uma combinação de reabilitações. Encontraram-se 15 (78,9%) pacientes com fluxo salivar classificado como muito baixo e quatro (21,1 %) mostraram melhor fluxo salivar após cinco anos da radioterapia. O teste de Coeficiente de Correlação de Pearson mostrou correlação entre a necessidade de prótese e a idade (p=0,006; r=0,4734) e a necessidade de prótese e o fluxo salivar dos pacientes (p=0,03; r=0,3672). As complicações da radioterapia em cabeça e pescoço acarreta uma série de consequências físicas e psicológicas. O tempo após a radioterapia parece influenciar em alguns casos a melhora do fluxo salivar e em menos de um ano de tratamento não há impacto da saúde bucal na qualidade de vida. São necessários estudos longitudinais com essa população para a verificação dos efeitos da radioterapia ao longo dos anos.

AUTOPERCEPÇÃO DAS CONDIÇÕES DE SAÚDE BUCAL EM ADULTOS DO SUL DO BRASIL

Os agravos de saúde bucal ainda se constituem como importante problema de saúde pública. Estudos de base populacional são essenciais para identificar grupos prioritários e, neste contexto, investigar a autopercepção dos indivíduos complementa a análise objetiva, dando outro significado para as ações de planejamento em saúde. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a autopercepção de saúde bucal e fatores associados na população adulta de uma Unidade Básica de Saúde com Estratégia de Saúde da Família, do sul do Brasil. Participaram do estudo 207 sujeitos. A coleta de dados deu-se por meio de entrevista subjetiva, utilizando de questionário Oral Health Impact Profile – versão reduzida e exame clínico. Na análise dos resultados identificou-se que 43,0% da população avaliaram como positiva sua saúde bucal. Observou-se associação das variáveis e idade (p=0,036), cor da pele (p=0,030) e escolaridade (p=0,022) com a autopercepção positiva. Em relação à necessidade de tratamento, 71,5% acreditam precisar de alguma intervenção odontológica. Quando questionados sobre o impacto das condições bucais em sua qualidade de vida a maioria não percebe esta relação. No exame clínico, constatou-se que 48,2% dos indivíduos possuíam cárie dental e 81,7% necessitavam de prótese. Nesse sentido é necessário dar ênfase à educação em saúde a fim de que a população perceba a relação da saúde bucal com a saúde geral e com a qualidade de vida.

Dental care use in Ontario: the Canadian community health survey (CCHS)

BackgroundOral health is a significant measure of overall health, and regular dental visits are recommended for the maintenance of oral health. The purpose of this study is to determine the pattern (amount and type) of, and factors associated with dental care use among Ontarians.MethodsData from the 2014 cycle of the Canadian Community Health Survey was used and analysis was restricted to individuals aged 12 and above residing in Ontario. Dental care use was defined by two distinct outcomes: not visiting a dentist within the past year and visiting a dentist only for emergencies. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the association between socio-demographic, health behavior, oral health, and other health-related factors and the two outcomes.ResultsMore than a quarter of participants reported not visiting the dentist in the last year, and 19% reported usually visiting a dentist only for emergencies. Multivariable logistic regression analysis suggested that males, individuals of Aboriginal status, those with low educational attainment, low household income, no dental insurance, who smoked, less frequent teeth brushing, poor health of teeth and mouth, or had diabetes were at a significant increased likelihood of not visiting the dentist within the past year, and only visiting a dentist for emergency care.ConclusionsSocioeconomic status, self-reported oral health, and general health behaviors were associated with dental care use. These findings highlight the need for focusing efforts toward improving dental care use among Ontarians.

Extraoral Uses of Autologous Oral Soft Tissue Grafts: A Different Bridge Between Mouth and Body Health.

Focused Clinical Question: Are there any extraoral uses for intraoral soft tissue grafts? Summary: Despite extensive literature on the intraoral uses of soft tissue autografts harvested from oral sites, the periodontal literature is lacking information on the extraoral uses of such grafts. The purpose of this article is to review the autologous use of certain oral soft tissue grafts for extraoral indications. A literature search revealed that several medical specialties, including otolaryngology, ophthalmology, dermatology, plastic surgery, and urology, have a track record of positive outcomes with the use of free gingival, buccal fat pad, and buccal mucosa grafts for a wide variety of reconstructive procedures at diverse body sites. Conclusions: The numerous successful extraoral uses of oral soft tissue autografts underscore the versatility of these tissues in reconstructive surgery and suggest there is potential for collaboration between periodontal and medical specialists for the benefit of patients in need of such reconstructions. Broader awareness of these applications of oral soft tissue grafts could help expand their current uses and would allow practitioners to better answer possible patient inquiries.

Relationship of Mother Behavior Against Dental Caries Incidence in Toddler at Putra Sentosa Early Childhood

Dental caries disease is mostly found on toddlers age 3-5. Mothers hopefully, can do precaution by maintaining toddlers dental and mouth health properly. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between the knowledge, attitude, and action of the mother about dental and mouth health against dental caries. This study used case control design. The subjects were taken from a population by simple random sampling technique. Analysis of the results of studies using non-parametric test is Chi-square test, The result showed mothers’ knowledge of oral health into the category of low at 57.4%, with a risk factor (OR) gained 4.04 times higher dental caries, while most of the low attitude about oral health toddlers of 62.5%, with a risk factor (OR) gained 3,33 times higher dental caries, while the majority of the capital actions included in the unfavorable category that is 58.8%, with the risk factors (OR) gained 4.00 times higher dental caries. The analysis results are obtained the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the mother’s oral health on the incidence of dental caries toddlers. It is suggested the parents, especially the mother has an important role for the growth of children, let increased knowledge about oral health toddlers that includes understanding, benefits, and the prevention of diseases that can be prevented by maintaining healthy teeth and mouth. The Relationship Of Dental And Mouth Disease With The Quality Of Life Of Children In Talawaan Minahasa Sub-District

Dental and mouth health play an important role to get good health. Mouth disease cause pain, suffering, social deprivation and psychologi-cal barriers, which are highly detrimental to both individuals and society including the children. School age children is one of the groups that are vulnerable to dental and mouth health problems. The study aim to know the relationship of dental and mouth disease with the child’s quality of life. The study design was cross-sectional conducted in North Minahasa subdistrict with sample taken by convenience sampling. Data analysis of univariate and bivariat analysis. Results of univariate analysis obtained average dental caries with PUFA index was 0.77 and the Calculus Index (CI) was 0.75. The average of PUFA index of subjects whose parents work in nonformal higher (0.88) than subjects whose parents work in a formal (0.76). Bivariat analysis obtained significant corelation between dental caries and the child’s quality of life index PUFA (r =-0.418, p = 0.000) and Calculus Index (r =-0.158, p = 0,091). The better children’s dental health status the better the child’s quality of life. It is therefore advised to care for dental and mouth health in children so that can increase the quality of life .

Dental and oral health education of children through games among kindergarten teachersPurposeThis study aims to determine the differences of knowledge about the dental and oral health of children before and after instruction with the game method called “Rangking I” among kindergarten teachers. MethodsThis research was a quasi experimental study with quantitative data analysis using a one group experimental design. A total of 29 kindergarten teachers were educated by the game method called “Rangking 1”. Changes in knowledge before and after education were measured using a pre-test and post-test. ResultsThe Wilcoxon test showed that education with the “Rangking 1” game method and lectures can be effective in improving the knowledge of kindergarten teachers related to oral and dental health. ConclusionThe game method “Rangking 1” can increase the knowledge of dental and mouth health in kindergarten teachers significantly. Schools need to consider implementing learning methods through games for kindergarten children.

The influence of traditional drama as the motivation of self-care of oral and dental health in children

TITLE The influence of traditional drama as the motivation of self-care of oral and dental health in children ABSTRACT The caries rate among primary school-aged children is still high. Based on Riskesdas (Riset Kesehatan Dasar / Base Health Research) in 2013, children with ages from 10-14 years old with dental and mouth health problems reach 25,2%. It takes a genuine and concerted effort from all parties to promote oral hygiene at the age of the children, such as by growing a self-maintained motivation. This study aims to generate a motivation in children with cultural arts approach based on local wisdom, the art of traditional drama. This research is descriptive, which is a research method that was conducted with the aim to create a picture or description of the problem in the case of motivation self-care subjectively. This motivational factor will be assessed using the “Yes-No” questionnaire. For positive questions, each “Yes” answer will be given a “5” score and the “No” answer will be given “0” score. The opposite, for negative questions, each “Yes” answer will be given a “0” score and the “No” answer will be given a “5” score. The population is 72 children grade 3,4, and 5. The result of the research showed that the motivation after being treated with traditional drama was a significant change with an average of 85.69. The number is much higher when compared with the motivation before treatment is given with an average of 48.47. Traditional drama intervention can be used as an alternative media for health education implementation because based on the results of the above research can improve the motivation change. Examining the links between hydration, nutrition and mouth health.

Hydration, nutrition and mouth health have historically been overlooked and considered in isolation when, in reality, they are interlinked and interdependent. Not only do these health factors greatly influence each other, but also they have a significant effect on general health and wellbeing. By viewing each of these areas in isolation, health professionals risk missing opportunities to maximise patients' health and quality of life. Collaboration between health professions will also maximise benefits to patients. This article aims to explain the health effects of hydration, nutrition and mouth health and the links between them so practitioners consider how they can make positive changes in these areas for their patients and how they can promote collaboration with other health professionals.

Percepção e informação sobre saúde bucal: estudo com adolescentes de uma escola pública

O objetivo deste estudo descritivo foi conhecer a percepção e nível de informação de adolescentes sobre saúde bucal. A população constou de alunos de uma escola da rede pública de um município de Santa Catarina. O instrumento de coleta de dados foi um questionário. Participaram 144 adolescentes; a idade média do grupo era de 14,6 anos. A maioria (82%) informou que a última consulta odontológica ocorreu a menos de um ano e o principal motivo foi rotina/prevenção; 90% receberam informações sobre saúde bucal, tendo como principal fonte o dentista. O gênero não influenciou (p=0,21) na indicação das fontes de informação. A pontuação média da autoavaliação, em uma escala de zero a dez pontos, foi de 7,76 para condições de saúde bucal, 7,77 para hábitos de higiene bucal e de 7,51 para aparência dos dentes. No item dor (nos dentes e/ou gengiva) nos últimos doze meses, a pontuação foi de 1,81. No domínio cognitivo, o pior desempenho foi para o conceito de cárie. Os adolescentes pesquisados evidenciaram um nível satisfatório de autopercepção e de conhecimento sobre saúde bucal.
