The Usability and Feasibility of a Dietary Intake Self-Monitoring Application in a Population with Varying Literacy Levels

Objectives: Our aim was to study how hemodialysis patients with varying levels of literacy would use a diet and fluid intake monitoring mobile application (DIMA-P) and what would be its impact on their dietary behaviors. Materials and Methods: We developed a mobile application using user-centered methods and informed by the Integrated Theory of Health Behavior Change (ITHBC). Eight hemodialysis patients were recruited to use the application to record and monitor their diet and fluid intakes for a 6-week study. Overall, the participants had low literacy, numeracy, and technical skills. We collected the data on application usage and administered usability and context-of-use questionnaires to gain insights into the participants’ interaction with the application. The participants’ portion estimation skills and dietary self-regulation self-efficacy were assessed using various tests. In addition, interdialytic weight gain data were collected to assess the impact of app usage on the participants’ health outcomes. Results: The application usage patterns varied, with a general trend towards frequent use (n = 5) correlating with engagement in self-monitoring. The participants gave high comprehensibility, user-friendliness, satisfaction, and usefulness ratings, suggesting that the app was well designed and the target users could easily navigate and interact with the features. While the participants improved in estimating portion sizes, the impact on measuring skills was variable. There was also an improvement in the participants’ dietary self-regulation self-efficacy post-study. The interdialytic weight gain trends indicated a slight improvement in fluid and diet management. Conclusion: People with different literacy skills can effectively use icon-based interfaces for portion size estimation and develop personalized usage patterns to self-regulate their fluid and dietary intakes. Moreover, they can experience an enhancement in their dietary self-efficacy skills by using a mobile application aimed at providing nutritional feedback. Furthermore, this research shows that the constructs of the ITHBC are effective in promoting dietary behavior change in a population with varying literacy skills. The target users can benefit from explicitly visualizing the relationship between their health outcomes and the factors influencing those outcomes. These user ambitions could be supported by developing machine learning models. Future research should also focus on enhancing the mechanisms by which technology can further enhance each component of the ITHBC framework.

TeleCleft: Development and Evaluation of a Mobile Application for Monitoring Cleft Patients.

Development and evaluation of a mobile application for remote monitoring and guidance of pediatric patients diagnosed with cleft lip and/or palate (CL ± P) and their caregivers. This is a pilot cross-sectional, applied, and quantitative study. The study was conducted in two tertiary care treatment centers in Brazil. The participants included 20 caregivers and infants undergoing treatment with nasoalveolar molding (NAM) for CL ± P. The intervention involved using the TeleCleft mobile application for remote monitoring and guidance of caregivers and infants during NAM treatment. The main outcome measures included usability and satisfaction of users with the TeleCleft application. The results showed high usability and satisfaction ratings among users of the TeleCleft application. Most participants found remote monitoring to be effective and expressed positive opinions about its convenience and usefulness. TeleCleft could be a viable tool for remote monitoring and guidance, reducing the need for patients and caregivers to travel to treatment centers, which could potentially alleviate the burden of care faced by families during the journey of CL ± P treatment.

Development of Smart Gloves Prototype for Cyclists

Smart technologies have set their own standards and made their way into the current period. In that way, smart gloves have their own reputation for various purposes, such as gaming, boxing, power lifting, etc. However, there are not many smart gloves exclusively for cyclists in the market. Smart gloves for cyclists would be beneficial for monitoring their vitals during the athletic training or tracking their activity. There are few highly expensive wearable activity monitors that results in detecting the abnormal health status before it affects the athlete, during cycling and resistance exercise. In this paper, a smart glove prototype for cyclists is developed using Arduino software with affordable price, accurate reading of the heart rate, and oxygen-saturated level in the blood using MAX30100 sensor. The GPS enables locating and detecting the location of the user during the cycling activities. The determined data will be displayed on the Android smart phone of the user with the support of Bluetooth connection. The values can be monitored in real time, benefiting the user to act accordingly to the values in case of any significant abnormalities seen during the cycling activity. MIT app inventor had contributed a great part in accomplishing the mobile application for monitoring. As a result, in this study the developed prototype compensates the limitations of the existing smart glove and in cooperated it for serving its purpose at an affordable price.

최근 많은 기업이 다양한 AI 기반 수요예측 알고리즘을 통해서 이익을 창출하기 위해 시스템을 구축하고 있다. 그렇기에 본 연구에서는 AI 수요예측 관련 자료를 사용자가 실시간으로 모니터링 할 수 있는 애플리케이션을 개발하고자 한다. 이 애플리케이션을 만들 때 정보를 쉽게 이해하도록 색채를 용도에 맞춤으로써 도움을 줄 수 있고, 레이아웃을 고려하여 정보를 쉽게 전달하고 한눈에 알아볼 수 있도록 하는 것이 목표이다. 또한, 아이디와 비밀번호 확인, 고유 코드 부분 구성에서 체크 박스 기능과 각 텍스트 기능을 이용하여 설계하였다. 기업별로 정해진 고유 코드를 이용하여 해당되는 기업의 데이터만 확인할 수 있게끔 하여 기밀 데이터 보안성을 강화할 수 있다. 그로 인해 실시간 모니터링을 모바일 애플리케이션으로 보안 문제없이 볼 수 있다.

Assessing the contribution of the Adhoc crop health surveillance tool on the food security and livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Uganda

AbstractOne of the perennial causes of food insecurity in Sub‐Saharan African countries is crop pests and diseases that affect agricultural production. To address this concern in Uganda, a mobile phone crowdsourcing Adhoc surveillance tool, Adsurv, was deployed and used by smallholder farmers. Adsurv is a crop health surveillance and monitoring mobile application that facilitates diagnosing and managing crop pests and diseases. Existing literature has examined the impacts of mobile technologies on food security or livelihoods in isolation, but has not conducted a holistic assessment of both. This study on the other hand aimed at assessing the contribution Adsurv made towards improved food security and livelihood assets of the smallholder farmers, which were not fully understood. The study contributes to applying the sustainable livelihood framework (SLF) as theory in evaluating Mobile for Development (M4D) initiatives. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was further adopted to facilitate the development of a hierarchical assessment model of the multidimensional food security and livelihood aspects using data collected from 56 out of the targeted 70 participants. Results show that Adsurv mainly contributed towards food availability rather than utilization or access. These gains mostly enhanced the human assets of the smallholder farmers, empowering them with skills that positively impacted all other assets to support the attainment of sustainable livelihoods. The implication of these results in both research and practice is the need for further research trials, which will motivate farmers to recognize the importance of the nutritional value of food in their agronomic practices.

HealMA: a model-driven framework for automatic generation of IoT-based Android health monitoring applications.

The development of IoT-based Android health monitoring mobile applications (apps) using traditional software development methods is a challenging task. Developers need to be familiar with various programming languages to manage the heterogeneity of hardware and software systems and to support different communication technologies. To address these problems, in this paper, we first analyze the domain of health monitoring mobile applications and then propose a framework based on model-driven engineering that accelerates the development of such systems. The proposed framework, called HealMA, includes a domain-specific modeling language, a graphical modeling editor, several validation rules, and a set of model-to-code transformations, all packed as an Eclipse plugin. We evaluated the framework to assess its applicability in generating various mobile health applications, as well as its impact on software productivity. To this end, four different health monitoring applications have been automatically generated. Then, we evaluated the productivity of software developers by comparing the time and effort it takes to use HealMA compared to a code-centric process. As part of the evaluation, we also evaluated the usability of HealMA-generated apps by conducting a user study. The results show that HealMA is both applicable and beneficial for automatic generation of usable IoT-based Android health monitoring apps.

Mobile application for monitoring and normalizing the mastication muscle functional condition

Relevance. We have developed and patented a mobile application for monitoring and normalizing the mastication muscle functional state to solve the problems of detecting people with suspected dysfunction of the jaw muscles and increase the efficiency of muscle exercises.Purpose. To evaluate the positive effect of the mobile application to control and normalize the mastication muscle functional state in the clinical orthodontic practice.Material and methods. The study included 74 patients of Children Clinical Dental Clinic No. 2 of Voronezh, aged 6 to 12 years, who presented for a dental check-up. The masseter muscle tone was determined using the Mioton-3S device.Results. The authors’ method of self-examination does not give a systematic overestimation or underestimation of parameters (p = 0.083) compared to the standard myotonometry, which evidences its reliability and the possibility to use for preliminary examination and detection of people with suspected abnormal muscle tone. The analysis of the masseter muscles’ tone one month later revealed a statistically signifcant (p = 0.034) decrease in the number of patients with tone disorder among the mobile application users compared to the patients who did not use the application.Conclusion. The developed mobile application is efficient for preliminary assessment and detection of people with suspected abnormal muscle tone. Mobile application helps increase efficiency and awareness of muscle exercises.

Patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals' needs when designing the content of a mobile application for the clinical monitoring of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and home oxygen therapy: A user-centered design

BackgroundPatients with chronic respiratory diseases require oxygen supply in a considerable amount to reduce their symptoms and increase their survival. The development of abilities for the self-management of chronic diseases has been shown to be essential to decrease exacerbation of symptoms. Therefore, the design and development of health mobile applications (apps) that aid in educating and training for disease self-management are cost-effective strategies. ObjectiveThe purpose of this research was to describe the main characteristics that, according to final users, should be included in a mobile application for monitoring patients prescribed home oxygen therapy. MethodsA participative-qualitative design was used, involving direct participation of patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Focus groups were conducted to identify the needs and perspectives related to the app. A card sorting method was used to determine the contents and basic architecture of the app. ResultsBy means of the focus groups, we could identify nine basic functions of the app for the clinical monitoring of patients under home oxygen therapy. For both profiles, the app structure was determined by identifying the most frequent contents among participants. ConclusionsThe implementation of a user-centered design allowed for the detection of the functions, contents, and basic architecture of the app by identifying healthcare professionals and patients' needs and preferences regarding the self-management and monitoring of home oxygen prescriptions. Acceptability of an interstage home monitoring mobile application for caregivers of children with single ventricle physiology: Toward technology‐integrated family management

Infants with single ventricle physiology experience numerous vulnerable transitions, and the interstage period for shunt-dependent children represents the time of highest risk for morbidity and mortality. Data exchange, physiological monitoring, and communication between clinicians and caregivers through interstage home monitoring are critical. The purpose of this study is to report on the acceptability of a technology-enhanced home monitoring mobile application for interstage family management of children with single ventricle physiology. This study employed a qualitative descriptive study design and recruited caregivers that were part of a broader quality improvement project where they were beta users of a mobile health application specifically developed for the interstage home monitoring time period. Eleven caregivers were enrolled in this study that was a part of the early phases of beta testing the mobile application from a human-centered design perspective. In general, the participants had a favorable sentiment toward the technology-integrated family management aspects that the mobile application allowed for during the interstage process. The acceptability findings can be organized through the following themes: time needed for mobile application, family as integrated members of care team, connectedness and confidence, and resolving technical issues. Evaluation of the feasibility and acceptability of this technology from the perspective of family/caregivers is a critical component of human-centered design. The integration of technology-facilitated communication shows immense promise for patient populations undergoing vulnerable transitions in care. Future study is needed to determine the role mobile applications have in improved clinical outcomes, enhanced provider clinical-decision support, and family engagement in care.

Smart Health Monitoring System (SHMS) an Enabling Technology for Patient Care

Health Monitoring System is a sophisticating technology and another way to the normal/regular management of the health of the patient. This Health Monitoring Mobile Application is a contribution from our side to the public and to the overall health industry in Pakistan. With the help of Health mobile application, the users will be able to store their medical records, prescriptions and retrieve them later. The users can store and keep track of their vital readings (heart rate, blood pressure, fasting glucose, random glucose). The mobile application also shows hospitals that are nearby in case the user wants to avail of any medical help. An important feature of the application is the symptoms-based disease prediction, the user selects the symptoms which he has and then the application will name certain diseases that match those symptoms based on relevant algorithms. The major advances and issues have been discussed, and as well as potential tasks to health monitoring will be identified and evaluated.

Headache Diary Mobile Application for Monitoring and Characterizing Posttraumatic Headaches.

This study analyzed the data collected using a headache diary mobile application to characterize posttraumatic headaches (PTHs) in a sample of US veterans. Specifically, we measured patient engagement with the mobile application and compared our findings with previous literature regarding PTHs. A Headache Center of Excellence (HCoE) in a Veterans Health Administration facility. Forty-nine veterans currently being treated for ongoing PTH-related complaints with English fluency, reliable access to the internet, and a mobile phone. Observational study of PTH characteristics using the mobile application over the course of 1 year. Main outcome measures were collected via a headache diary mobile application developed for patients to track headache-associated symptoms, headache location, triggers, type, intensity, and duration. Patients also completed a baseline Headache Impact Test (HIT-6) survey. In total, 1569 entries were completed during the first year of application deployment. On average, patients completed 2.5 entries per week and used the application for 70 days. They frequently reported associated PTH symptoms of photophobia (56.7%) and headaches triggered by emotional stress (35.1%). Network analyses revealed patterns of co-occurrence in triggers of headache pain, associated symptoms, and headache pain location. Headache pain severity and impact ratings from the headache diary demonstrated convergent validity with the established HIT-6 measure. Headache diary mobile applications are a promising tool for monitoring and characterizing PTHs in veterans. Present results mirror past studies of PTH characteristics. Mobile application headache diaries may be used in both clinical and research settings to monitor headache symptoms and communicate the functional impact of headaches in real time.

An Internet of Things based Multi-Tiered Wireless Security System

In today’s contemporary culture, the need of taking precautions to protect one’s own belongings and privacy cannot be stressed. Because of this, an adaptive multilayer wireless security system, also known as ML-WSS, has been developed in order to monitor also safeguard a location with the assistance of the internet of things (IoT). In the hardware and software design of the ML- WSS, the sensors, the Wi-Fi module, also the process and monitoring mobile application all play key roles. The proposed method enables remote monitoring and management to take place finished the Internet also the ThingSpeak cloud, which is where the OMM application keeps the data that it has collected. The idea suggests slicing the crucial area into three distinct sectors, with sector 1 being the least dangerous, sector 2 being intermediate, and sector 3 being the most dangerous of the three. The criteria for the level of security should serve as a reference for both the placement of sensors and the classification of sensors according to the level of protection they give. Usability evaluation of a real-time water quality monitoring mobile application

To ensure that a mobile application is usable to a particular extent, a real-time water quality monitoring system should be carefully designed, especially as end users are a diverse group of people with varying requirements and demands. The main objective of this research was to investigate how participants, the fisher-folks respond to a mobile water quality monitoring app in terms of its effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction, which together represent its usability. The results were obtained by performing usability evaluation through the use of a modified Goal Question Metric (GQM) model, including field testing and questionnaires. The evaluation findings show that the Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring app achieves a high level of success in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, and that users are satisfied with it. However, there were a few concerns that needed to be addressed.

Design and implementation of an adaptive multilevel wireless security system using IoT

Securing property plays a crucial role in human life. Therefore, an adaptive multilevel wireless security system (ML-WSS) based on the internet of things (IoT) has been proposed to observe and secure a certain place. ML-WSS consists of hardware and software components, such as a set of sensors, Wi-Fi module, and operation and monitoring mobile application (OMM). The OMM application is designed to remotely monitor and control the proposed system through the Internet and by using ThingSpeak cloud as a data store. The proposed scheme is based on dividing the required zone of the place into three regions (levels), low-risk region (LRR) as level-1, moderate-risk region (MRR) level-2, and high-risk region (HRR) as level-3. Each level may contain one or set of sensors, so the number of sensors, their placement, and under which level is labelled is specified according to the security requirements. Several processes are done based on these levels when a breach occurs in the system. Mathematical model and pseudocode were created to illustrate the mechanism of the proposed system. The results show that the proposed system has been implemented successfully and the number of breaches that occurs in level-3 area was reduced by 50% as compared to level-1.

Expiratory Muscle Strength Training in Patients with Parkinson's Disease: A Pilot Study of Mobile Monitoring Application.

Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) studies have reported significant improvements in maximum expiratory strength, cough efficacy, and swallowing function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).1 Currently, EMST is usually performed in short and intensive training periods.1 However, information about detraining outcomes highlights the need for the development of long-term maintenance home-based programs to sustain training gains following intensive periods of EMST, especially considering the progressive nature of PD.2 Nevertheless, low long-term adherence to home exercise is an important issue in many patient groups and may compromise treatment outcomes.3 Therefore, we developed a mobile phone-based visual feedback (MPVF) application to keep patients motivated to continue EMST following intensive periods of training. With the help of a specially developed algorithm, the application can evaluate real-time data using a microphone attached to an expiratory handheld device (Fig. 1). Supplement S1 provides detailed information about the algorithm. The first step in the research process of examining whether the feedback application is effective in long-term EMST adherence is to find out whether a MPVF application is suitable for patients with PD who may experience difficulties in using a smartphone due to motor and cognitive problems related to age and PD itself. Therefore, we conducted a pilot study to investigate the usability of MPVF in EMST in patients with PD. A total of 12 patients (Table S1) with PD performed an intensive home-based EMST with MPVF for 2 weeks. Peak cough flow, maximum expiratory pressure, and maximum inspiratory pressure were measured. The usability of the MPVF was also assessed using a semistructured interview. Supplement S2 provides detailed information about the methods. The median of adherence for completing the prescribed exercises in the training period was 90.5% (between 174 and 431 completed EMST maneuvers). A total of 2 weeks of intensive EMST were sufficient to significantly improve the participants' maximum expiratory pressure and voluntary peak cough flow (Table S2). The improvement is quantitatively comparable with the results of other intensive EMST studies with longer durations, for example.4, 5 When interpreting such rapid improvement, the impact of visual feedback should be considered. It can be assumed that visual feedback increased training effort compared with regular training without immediate control. All participants appreciated EMST with MPVF (12/12). They found it motivating (11/12), comprehensible (11/12), and user friendly (10/12). Even participants (n = 3) with mild cognitive impairment (Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores 24–25) who coincidentally had no previous experience with smartphones were able to use the application without difficulties or help from another person. With respect to the suggestions for improvement from a semistructured interview, the patients might be divided into 2 groups. The first group proposed simplifying the application as much as possible. The second group preferred more advanced options of presenting training data, such as in overview graphs and charts. To meet the needs of both groups, the application should be able to work in basic and advanced modes in the future. These findings indicate that EMST coupled with MPVF is feasible and potentially useful in patients with PD. Mobile Application for Monitoring and Preventing Cognitive Decline Through Lifestyle Intervention.

Diagnosing and preventing Alzheimer's disease is a complex task, partly due to being characterized by a lengthy asymptomatic stage. In order to tackle this, most preclinical studies are multidimensional in nature and largely focus on prevention through lifestyle interventions, such as improving nutrition and introducing physical as well as cognitive exercise. With the widespread use of mobile smart devices today, mobile health applications can help inform high-risk individuals at a low cost, while also aiding in the prevention of cognitive decline through constant virtual coaching services that contribute to lifestyle interventions. Under this light, a mobile application is developed in the context of this paper that provides risk assessment of individuals, daily monitoring of factors that have been found to help prevent cognitive impairment, and individually tailored guidance based on the individual's progress. The developed application is also capable of reassessing users' risk to track their progress, while also providing these services in an intuitive and user-friendly manner, which could enable the future development of more accurate models through the collected data.

Analysis of oral health knowledge improvement of pregnant mothers using oral health monitoring mobile application

Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness and contributing factors of the oral health knowledge improvement of pregnant mother using mobile application. Materials and Methods: A presented cross-sectional analytical study had 47 respondents that were obtained using simple random sampling from pregnant mother population in the health center in Surabaya, Indonesia. Data were collected by examining periodontal health using Community Periodontal Index (CPI) questionnaires to assess the risk factors, and pre- and posttest to measure the knowledge increment. The pretest was conducted before the respondents were given counseling about this oral health monitoring mobile application. Pregnant women are given educational material about the importance of maintaining oral health, especially the health of periodontal tissue during pregnancy. Statistically, descriptive test was used to describe the respondent distribution data. Paired t test was used to compare the knowledge improvement between pretest and posttest scores. Linear regression test was used to analyze the contributing factors of knowledge improvement of the respondents. Results: There was a significant (P < 0.05) improvement in the mean score of posttest (87%) compared to pretest (56%). The contributing factors in respondents’ knowledge improvement were their number of dental visits (P = 0.04) and their experience in periodontal disease as shown in their CPI score (P = 0.010). Conclusion: Oral health monitoring mobile application can be used as dental health promotion media of pregnant women, supported with their dental checkup and periodontal disease experience.

We are using IOT for our communication and interfacing with smart technology and getting some of Technological advancements for farmers. Some stats says in 2050, over 9–10 billion want to feed by smart agriculture. So now agriculture in IOT evolving day by day as future it’s a one of the critical factors for all the living things on earth. In agriculture water waste management is one of the critical problems they are facing so correctly and required amount of water is very important. So wastage of water is reduced means farming should be more effective as well as great help for farmers. That’s why we are going for IOT platform it’s very emerging, and so much connectivity also possible with IOT. We are using sensor technology and advancement for getting accurate sense about humidity, temperature, soil moisture and water level controlling segments. We are using IOT app BLYNK for our display and monitoring purposes. It’s very effective way for farmer to watch over the fields and great henchman for farmers. We also calculate profits and outcome of farmer for analytical purposes to compare between last season’s outcomes. Monitoring fields is good and effective factor for farming. In this project farmer can view growth of profit and season outcomes, and also moisture, temperature, and humidity factors it’s very useful for farmers. Our project is about interfacing various factors, so, go for Arduino UNO with IOT technology. We have also developed an android mobile application for monitoring and sensor movement display through BLYNK App. We are using ESP8266 for remote access and controlling purposes.

Development of a mobile application for monitoring and controlling a CNC machine using Industry 4.0 concepts

Industry 4.0 comprises a set of technologies that allow the interconnection, monitoring, and controlling of manufacturing processes. Today it represents a key point for the modern industry. The current work presents an Industry 4.0 system developed for monitoring and controlling a 5-axis CNC machine center, in real time, through a mobile device, providing important feedback information for users and manufacturers of the machine. Given that response time is crucial in such applications, we conducted an experimental investigation to examine the system latency with distinct database structures, based on SQL and NoSQL. The results suggest that the non-relational structure (NoSQL) presented lower response times and is, thus, best suited for the application in hand. The system allows monitoring and controlling of any CNC machine remotely—given that a middleware for connecting the machine is provided—in real time, presenting new possibilities from the perspectives of machine tool builders and shop floor management.
