Size Dependence of Liquid–Liquid Phase Separation by in Situ Study of Flowing Submicron Aerosol Particles

Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of atmospheric particles impacts a range of atmospheric processes. Driven by thermodynamics, LLPS occurs in mixed organic-inorganic particles when high inorganic salt concentrations exclude organic compounds, which develop into a separate phase. The effect of particle size on the thermodynamic and kinetic drivers of LLPS, however, remains incompletely understood. Here, the size dependence was studied for the separation relative humidity (SRH) of LLPS. Submicron organic-inorganic aerosol particles of ammonium sulfate mixed with 1,2,6-hexanetriol and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were studied. In a flow configuration, upstream size selection was coupled to a downstream fluorescence aerosol flow tube (F-AFT) at 293 ± 1 K. For both mixed particle types, the SRH values for submicron particle diameters of 260-410 nm agreed with previous measurements reported in the literature for supermicron particles. For smaller particles, the SRH values decreased by approximately 5% RH for diameters of 130-260 nm for PEG-sulfate particles and of 70-190 nm for hexanetriol-sulfate particles. From these observations, the nucleation rate in the hexanetriol-sulfate system was constrained, implying an activation barrier to nucleation of +1.4 to +2.0 × 10-19 J at 70% RH and 293 K. Quantifying the activation barrier is an approach for predicting size-dependent LLPS in the atmosphere.

Water uptake and optical properties of mixed organic-inorganic particles

Atmospheric aerosol particles are frequently mixtures of inorganic and organic species, both of which can contribute to aerosol water uptake and determine the particles’ ability to scatter and absorb light. While water uptake of purely inorganic aerosol is well represented in current regional and global chemical transport models, it is challenging to represent it for particles that are mixtures of organic and inorganic species. Here we quantified the growth factor for aerosols that consist of mixed organic-inorganic particles using an accurate lattice-based adsorption isotherm model (Ad-iso) as a benchmark. We then determined the error in the growth factor and resulting optical properties for simplifying assumptions that are commonly made in current chemical transport models. The systems studied here are representative of ambient atmospheric aerosols, consisting of model water-soluble inorganic-organic mixtures, with and without a core of absorbing black carbon, under conditions of relative humidity larger than 85%. The assumption of completely neglecting the water uptake by organic components, for particles with an organic mass fraction of 50%, led to errors of up to 7% in growth factor and up to 3.5% in single scattering albedo. Larger errors occurred for larger organic mass fractions. Approximating the organic water uptake with a constant hygroscopicity parameter, for organic mass fractions between 45 and 65%, the errors remained within 3% for the growth factor and 0.6% for the single scattering albedo. For organic mass fractions smaller than 45% or larger than 65%, the errors increased up to 6% for the single scattering albedo. The magnitudes of these errors underscore the importance of considering organic/inorganic mixtures for estimating direct aerosol radiative forcing.Copyright © 2021 American Association for Aerosol Research

Viscosity and phase state of aerosol particles consisting of sucrose mixed with inorganic salts

Abstract. Research on the viscosity and phase state of aerosol particles is essential because of their significant influence on the particle growth rate, equilibration times, and related evolution of mass concentration as well as heterogeneous reactions. So far, most studies of viscosity and phase state have been focused on organic aerosol particles, yet data on how viscosity can vary when the organic materials are mixed with inorganic salts remain scarce. Herein, using bead-mobility and poke-and-flow techniques, we quantified viscosities at 293 ± 1 K for binary mixtures of organic material / H2O and inorganic salts / H2O, as well as ternary mixtures of organic material / inorganic salts / H2O over the atmospheric relative humidity (RH) range. Sucrose as the organic species and calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2) or magnesium nitrate (Mg(NO3)2) as the inorganic salts were examined. For binary sucrose / H2O particles, the viscosities gradually increased from ∼ 3 × 10−2 to ≳1 × 108 Pa s as RH decreased from ∼ 75 % to ∼ 25 %. Compared with the results for the sucrose / H2O particles, binary Ca(NO3)2/H2O and Mg(NO3)2/H2O particles showed drastic enhancements to ≳1 × 108 Pa s at low RH close to the efflorescence RH. For ternary mixtures of sucrose / Ca(NO3)2 / H2O or sucrose / Mg(NO3)2 / H2O, with organic-to-inorganic mass ratios of 1:1, the viscosities of the particles gradually increased from ∼ 3 × 10−2 to greater than ∼ 1 × 108 Pa s for RH values from ∼ 75 % to ∼ 5 %. Compared to the viscosities of the Ca(NO3)2/H2O particles, higher viscosities were observed for the ternary sucrose / Ca(NO3)2 / H2O particles, with values increased by about 1 order of magnitude at 50 % RH and about 6 orders of magnitude at 35 % RH. Moreover, we applied a thermodynamics-based group-contribution model (AIOMFAC-VISC, Aerosol Inorganic–Organic Mixtures Functional groups Activity Coefficients Viscosity) to predict aerosol viscosities for the studied systems. The model predictions and viscosity measurements show good agreement within ∼ 1 order of magnitude in viscosity. The viscosity measurements indicate that the studied mixed organic–inorganic particles range in phase state from liquid to semi-solid or even solid across the atmospheric RH range at a temperature of 293 K. These results support our understanding that organic / inorganic / H2O particles can exist in a liquid, semisolid, or even a solid state in the troposphere.

Impacts of Mixed Gaseous and Particulate Pollutants on Secondary Particle Formation during Ozonolysis of Butyl Vinyl Ether

To clarify how coexisting atmospheric pollutants affect secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, we investigated the effects of mixed gaseous pollutants (CO and SO2) and mixed organic-inorganic (MOI) particles on SOA formation during n-butyl vinyl ether (BVE) ozonolysis. Higher CO levels (90 ppm) were found to significantly change the chemical composition of SOA (prompting monomers while reducing oligomer formation) without causing much change in the overall SOA mass. Based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis, heterogeneous chemical conversions between preformed and newly formed SOA were the major pathways of SOA formation in the presence of MOI particles. Furthermore, MOI particles had an enhancing effect on SOA formation at 1% relative humidity (RH) but a negligible effect at higher RH (10 and 55%). The enhancing effect was attributed to the formation of multifunctional products resulting from high functionalization of preformed and newly formed SOA. The negligible effect observed was ascribed to the cleavage of unstable oligomers as a result of the reversible oligomerization of preformed and newly formed SOA. Even so, MOI particles could still affect the composition of newly formed SOA. These results highlight the need to account for the significant effect of mixed gaseous and particulate pollutants on both SOA constituents and their evolution.

Online molecular characterisation of organic aerosols in an atmospheric chamber using extractive electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry

Abstract. The oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represents a substantial source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the atmosphere. In this study, we present online measurements of the molecular constituents formed in the gas and aerosol phases during α-pinene oxidation in the Cambridge Atmospheric Simulation Chamber (CASC). We focus on characterising the performance of extractive electrospray ionisation (EESI) mass spectrometry (MS) for particle analysis. A number of new aspects of EESI-MS performance are considered here. We show that relative quantification of organic analytes can be achieved in mixed organic–inorganic particles. A comprehensive assignment of mass spectra for α-pinene derived SOA in both positive and negative ion modes is obtained using an ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometer. We compare these online spectra to conventional offline ESI-MS spectra and find good agreement in terms of the compounds identified, without the need for complex sample work-up procedures. Under our experimental conditions, EESI-MS signals arise only from particle-phase analytes. High-time-resolution (7 min) EESI-MS spectra are compared with simulations from the near-explicit Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) for a range of reaction conditions. We show that MS peak abundances scale with modelled concentrations for condensable products (pinonic acid, pinic acid, OH-pinonic acid). Relative quantification is achieved throughout SOA formation as the composition, size and mass (5–2400 µg m−3) of particles is evolving. This work provides a robust demonstration of the advantages of EESI-MS for chamber studies over offline ESI-MS (time resolution, relative quantification) and over hard online techniques (molecular information).

Influence of particle-phase state on the hygroscopic behavior of mixed organic–inorganic aerosols

Abstract. Recent work has demonstrated that organic and mixed organic–inorganic particles can exhibit multiple phase states depending on their chemical composition and on ambient conditions such as relative humidity (RH). To explore the extent to which water uptake varies with particle-phase behavior, hygroscopic growth factors (HGFs) of nine laboratory-generated, organic and organic–inorganic aerosol systems with physical states ranging from well-mixed liquids to phase-separated particles to viscous liquids or semi-solids were measured with the Differential Aerosol Sizing and Hygroscopicity Spectrometer Probe at RH values ranging from 40 to 90%. Water-uptake measurements were accompanied by HGF and RH-dependent thermodynamic equilibrium calculations using the Aerosol Inorganic-Organic Mixtures Functional groups Activity Coefficients (AIOMFAC) model. In addition, AIOMFAC-predicted growth curves are compared to several simplified HGF modeling approaches: (1) representing particles as ideal, well-mixed liquids; (2) forcing a single phase but accounting for non-ideal interactions through activity coefficient calculations; and (3) a Zdanovskii–Stokes–Robinson-like calculation in which complete separation of the inorganic and organic components is assumed at all RH values, with water uptake treated separately in each of the individual phases. We observed variability in the characteristics of measured hygroscopic growth curves across aerosol systems with differing phase behaviors, with growth curves approaching smoother, more continuous water uptake with decreasing prevalence of liquid–liquid phase separation and increasing oxygen : carbon ratios of the organic aerosol components. We also observed indirect evidence for the dehydration-induced formation of highly viscous semi-solid phases and for kinetic limitations to the crystallization of ammonium sulfate at low RH for sucrose-containing particles. AIOMFAC-predicted growth curves are generally in good agreement with the HGF measurements. The performances of the simplified modeling approaches, however, differ for particles with differing phase states. This suggests that no single simplified modeling approach can be used to capture the water-uptake behavior for the diversity of particle-phase behavior expected in the atmosphere. Errors in HGFs calculated with the simplified models are of sufficient magnitude to produce substantial errors in estimates of particle optical and radiative properties, particularly for the assumption that water uptake is driven by absorptive equilibrium partitioning with ideal particle-phase mixing.

Mass-based hygroscopicity parameter interaction model and measurement of atmospheric aerosol water uptake

Abstract. In this study we derive and apply a mass-based hygroscopicity parameter interaction model for efficient description of concentration-dependent water uptake by atmospheric aerosol particles with complex chemical composition. The model approach builds on the single hygroscopicity parameter model of Petters and Kreidenweis (2007). We introduce an observable mass-based hygroscopicity parameter κm which can be deconvoluted into a dilute hygroscopicity parameter (κm0) and additional self- and cross-interaction parameters describing non-ideal solution behavior and concentration dependencies of single- and multi-component systems. For reference aerosol samples of sodium chloride and ammonium sulfate, the κm-interaction model (KIM) captures the experimentally observed concentration and humidity dependence of the hygroscopicity parameter and is in good agreement with an accurate reference model based on the Pitzer ion-interaction approach (Aerosol Inorganic Model, AIM). Experimental results for pure organic particles (malonic acid, levoglucosan) and for mixed organic-inorganic particles (malonic acid – ammonium sulfate) are also well reproduced by KIM, taking into account apparent or equilibrium solubilities for stepwise or gradual deliquescence and efflorescence transitions. The mixed organic-inorganic particles as well as atmospheric aerosol samples exhibit three distinctly different regimes of hygroscopicity: (I) a quasi-eutonic deliquescence & efflorescence regime at low-humidity where substances are just partly dissolved and exist also in a non-dissolved phase, (II) a gradual deliquescence & efflorescence regime at intermediate humidity where different solutes undergo gradual dissolution or solidification in the aqueous phase; and (III) a dilute regime at high humidity where the solutes are fully dissolved approaching their dilute hygroscopicity. For atmospheric aerosol samples collected from boreal rural air and from pristine tropical rainforest air (secondary organic aerosol) we present first mass-based measurements of water uptake over a wide range of relative humidity (1–99.4%) obtained with a new filter-based differential hygroscopicity analyzer (FDHA) technique. For these samples the concentration dependence of κm can be described by a simple KIM model equation based on observable mass growth factors and a total of only six fit parameters summarizing the combined effects of the dilute hygroscopicity parameters, self- and cross-interaction parameters, and solubilities of all involved chemical components. One of the fit parameters represents κm0 and can be used to predict critical dry diameters for the activation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) as a function of water vapor supersaturation according to Köhler theory. For sodium chloride and ammonium sulfate reference particles as well as for pristine rainforest aerosols consisting mostly of secondary organic matter, we obtained good agreement between the KIM predictions and measurement data of CCN activation. The application of KIM and mass-based measurement techniques shall help to bridge gaps in the current understanding of water uptake by atmospheric aerosols: (1) the gap between hygroscopicity parameters determined by hygroscopic growth measurements under sub-saturated conditions and by CCN activation measurements at water vapor supersaturation, and (2) the gap between the results of simplified single parameter models widely used in atmospheric or climate science and the results of complex multi-parameter ion- and molecule-interaction models frequently used in physical chemistry and solution thermodynamics (e.g., AIM, E-AIM, ADDEM, UNIFAC, AIOMFAC).

Deliquescence, efflorescence, and phase miscibility of mixed particles of ammonium sulfate and isoprene-derived secondary organic material

Abstract. The hygroscopic phase transitions of ammonium sulfate mixed with isoprene-derived secondary organic material were investigated in aerosol experiments. The organic material was produced by isoprene photo-oxidation at 40% and 60% relative humidity. The low volatility fraction of the photo-oxidation products condensed onto ammonium sulfate particles. The particle-phase organic material had oxygen-to-carbon ratios of 0.67 to 0.74 (±0.2) for mass concentrations of 20 to 30 μg m−3. The deliquescence, efflorescence, and phase miscibility of the mixed particles were investigated using a dual arm tandem differential mobility analyzer. The isoprene photo-oxidation products induced deviations in behavior relative to pure ammonium sulfate. Compared to an efflorescence relative humidity (ERH) of 30 to 35% for pure ammonium sulfate, efflorescence was eliminated for aqueous particles having organic volume fractions ϵ of 0.6 and greater. Compared to a deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) of 80% for pure ammonium sulfate, the DRH steadily decreased with increasing ϵ, approaching a DRH of 40% for ϵ of 0.9. Parameterizations of the DRH(ϵ) and ERH(ϵ) curves were as follows: DRH(ϵ)= ∑i ci,d ϵi valid for 0 ≤ ϵ ≤0.86 and ERH(ϵ)= ∑ i ci,e ϵi valid for 0 ≤ ϵ ≤ 0.55 for the coefficients c0,d= 80.67, c0,e = 28.35, c1,d = −11.45, c1,e = −13.66, c2,d = 0, c2,e = 0, c3,d = 57.99, c3,e = -83.80, c4,d = −106.80, and c4,e = 0. The molecular description that is thermodynamically implied by these strongly sloped DRH(ϵ) and ERH(ϵ) curves is that the organic isoprene photo-oxidation products, the inorganic ammonium sulfate, and water form a miscible liquid phase even at low relative humidity. This phase miscibility is in contrast to the liquid-liquid separation that occurs for some other types of secondary organic material. These differences in liquid-liquid separation are consistent with a prediction recently presented in the literature that the bifurcation between liquid-liquid phase separation versus mixing depends on the oxygen-to-carbon ratio of the organic material. The conclusions are that the influence of secondary organic material on the hygroscopic properties of ammonium sulfate varies with organic composition and that the degree of oxygenation of the organic material, which is a measurable characteristic of complex organic materials, is an important variable influencing the hygroscopic properties of mixed organic-inorganic particles.

Investigating Primary Marine Aerosol Properties: CCN Activity of Sea Salt and Mixed Inorganic–Organic Particles

Sea spray particles ejected as a result of bubbles bursting from artificial seawater containing salt and organic matter in a stainless steel tank were sampled for size distribution, morphology, and cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) activity. Bubbles were generated either by aeration through a diffuser or by water jet impingement on the seawater surface. Three objectives were addressed in this study. First, CCN activities of NaCl and two types of artificial sea salt containing only inorganic components were measured to establish a baseline for further measurements of mixed organic–inorganic particles. Second, the effect of varying bubble residence time in the bulk seawater solution on particle size and CCN activity was investigated and was found to be insignificant for the organic compounds studied. Finally, CCN activities of particles produced from jet impingement were compared with those produced from diffuser aeration. Analyses indicate a considerable amount of organic enrichment in the jet-produced particles relative to the bulk seawater composition when sodium laurate, an organic surfactant, is present in the seawater. In this case, the production of a thick foam layer during impingement may explain the difference in activation and supports hypotheses that particle production from the two methods of generating bubbles is not equal.

Kinetics of N2O5 Hydrolysis on Secondary Organic Aerosol and Mixed Ammonium Bisulfate−Secondary Organic Aerosol Particles

The kinetics of the hydrolysis reaction of N(2)O(5) on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) produced through the ozonolysis of α-pinene and on mixed ammonium bisulfate-SOA particles was investigated using an entrained aerosol flow tube coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer. We report room temperature uptake coefficients, γ, on ammonium bisulfate and SOA particles at 50% relative humidity of 1.5 × 10(-2) ± 1.5 × 10(-3) and 1.5 × 10(-4) ± 2 × 10(-5), respectively. For the mixed ammonium bisulfate-SOA particles, γ decreased from 2.6 × 10(-3) ± 4 × 10(-4) to 3.0 × 10(-4) ± 3 × 10(-5) as the SOA mass fraction increased from 9 to 79, indicating a strong suppression in γ with the addition of organic material. There is an order-of-magnitude reduction in the uptake coefficient with the smallest amount of SOA material present and smaller additional reductions with increasing aerosol organic content. This newly coated organic layer may either decrease the mass accommodation coefficient of N(2)O(5) onto the particle or hinder the dissolution and diffusion of N(2)O(5) into the remainder of the aerosol after it has been accommodated onto the surface. The former corresponds to a surface effect and the latter to bulk processes. The low value of the uptake coefficient on pure SOA particles will likely make N(2)O(5) hydrolysis insignificant on such an aerosol, but atmospheric chemistry models need to account for the role that organics may play in suppressing the kinetics of this reaction on mixed organic-inorganic particles.

Surfactants in cloud droplet activation: mixed organic-inorganic particles

Abstract. Organic compounds with surfactant properties are commonly found in atmospheric aerosol particles. Surface activity can significantly influence the cloud droplet forming ability of these particles. We have studied the cloud droplet formation by two-component particles comprising one of the organic surfactants sodium octanoate, sodium decanoate, sodium dodecanoate, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, mixed with sodium chloride. Critical supersaturations were measured with a static diffusion cloud condensation nucleus counter (Wyoming CCNC-100B). Results were modeled from Köhler theory applying three different representations of surfactant properties in terms of surfactant surface partitioning and reduced droplet surface tension. We here confirm previous results for single-component organic surfactant particles, that experimental critical supersaturations are greatly underpredicted, if reduced surface tension is used while ignoring the effects of surface partitioning in droplets. Furthermore, disregarding surfactant properties by ignoring surface partitioning and assuming the constant surface tension of pure water can also lead to significant underpredictions of experimental critical supersaturations. For the mixed particles comprising less than 50% by mass of surfactant, this approach however still provides a good description of the observed droplet activation. A comprehensive account for surfactant properties, including both surface tension reduction and effects of surface partitioning in activating droplets, generally predicts experimental critical supersaturations well.

Inhibition of efflorescence in mixed organic–inorganic particles at temperatures less than 250 K

It is now well recognized that mixed organic-inorganic particles are abundant in the atmosphere. While there have been numerous studies of efflorescence of mixed organic-inorganic particles close to 293 K, there are only a few at temperatures less than 273 K. Understanding the efflorescence properties of these particles at temperatures less than 273 K could be especially important for predicting ice nucleation in the upper troposphere. We studied the efflorescence properties of mixed citric acid-ammonium sulfate particles as a function of temperature to better understand the efflorescence properties of mixed organic-inorganic particles in the middle and upper troposphere. Our data for 293 K illustrate that the addition of citric acid decreases the ERH of ammonium sulfate, which is consistent with the trends observed with other systems containing highly oxygenated organic compounds. At low temperatures the trend is qualitatively the same, but efflorescence can be inhibited by smaller concentrations of citric acid. For example at temperatures <250 K an organic mass/(organic mass + sulfate mass) of only 0.33 is needed to inhibit efflorescence of ammonium sulfate. In the upper troposphere the organic mass/(organic mass + sulfate mass) can often be larger than this value. As a result, particles in the upper troposphere may be more likely to remain in the liquid state than previously thought and solid ammonium sulfate may be less likely to participate in heterogeneous ice nucleation in the upper troposphere. Additional studies are required on other model organic systems.

An Algorithm for the Calculation of Secondary Organic Aerosol Density Combining AMS and SMPS Data

An algorithm for the calculation of organic aerosol density in mixed organic-inorganic particles combining measurements by the Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) and the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) was developed. The approach is applicable to particles with size-dependent composition. The estimated density of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed by α-pinene, β-pinene, and d-limonene ozonolysis was in the range of 1.4–1.65 g cm− 3. However, in two cases the SOA had much lower density (0.9–1.0 g cm − 3 )indicating that there may be changes in particle morphology depending on the conditions of SOA formation. The high estimated density for these systems suggests that SOA particles may be solid or waxy. Based on our results, SOA yields in smog chamber experiments may be a lot higher (up to 50%) than the currently assumed values. Most of the literature results have been calculated by measuring the SOA number distribution with an SMPS and then multiplying the volume concentration with a density equal to 1 or 1.2 g cm − 3 .

Hygroscopic behavior of aerosol particles from biomass fires using environmental transmission electron microscopy

We used both a conventional transmission electron microscope and an environ- mental transmission electron microscope (ETEM) to determine morphology, composition, and water uptake of 80 individual aerosol particles collected from the young smoke of flaming and smoldering fires during SAFARI-2000, a comprehensive air quality campaign in southern Africa. Six representative carbonaceous particle types are described, including soot, tar balls, and heterogeneously internally mixed particles containing C with S-, K-, Mg- or Na- rich inorganic phases. The hygroscopic behavior of these particles over the range 0-100% relative humidity (RH) was studied in detail. Soot and tar balls did not take up water, whereas the mixed organic-inorganic particles took up water between 55 and 100% RH, the exact value depending on the composition of their water-soluble phases. The inorganic phase appeared to determine the hygroscopic properties of all mixed organic-inorganic particles. Thus, incorporation of inorganic plant material or reactions with inorganic atmospheric components can dramatically alter the hygroscopic properties of carbonaceous particles in smoke plumes. The fraction of these mixed organic-inorganic particles plausibly increases with time, which will modulate the effects of smoke on radiative budgets.

Investigating the chemical composition of mixed organic–inorganic particles by “soft” vacuum ultraviolet photoionization: The reaction of ozone with anthracene on sodium chloride particles

The ozone reaction with anthracene coated sodium chloride particles is measured by single photon ionization of the resulting volatilized gas phase molecules. To investigate in detail the organic fraction of particles, a vacuum ultraviolet aerosol mass spectrometer (VUV-AMS) has been developed at the Chemical Dynamics Beamline at the Advanced Light Source. This instrument combines a thermal vaporization particle source with tunable synchrotron radiation. Since VUV is a “soft” ionization method, the roles of both the vaporization and ionization steps on the fragmentation patterns of C 30H 62 hydrocarbons are observed. Conditions can be found to obtain mass spectra without significant fragmentation of the molecules. This technique is used to characterize the products of the heterogeneous reaction of gas phase ozone with particle phase anthracene on size-selected sodium chloride particles, conducted in a flow tube experiment. The recorded fragment-free mass spectra show several new products from mono- to penta-oxygenated anthracene. The kinetics of the product formation and particle size measurements are simultaneously recorded, revealing that an increase of the particle size accompanies the formation of the products.
