Effect of Waste Jute Fibers on the Mechanical Properties of Stone Matrix Asphalt Mixtures
  • Sep 5, 2025
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Aeshah A Ahmed + 1 more

Abstract Stone matrix asphalt (SMA), a gap-graded asphalt mix characterised by excellent durability, rutting resistance, and stone-on-stone contact, requires a strong stabilising agent to prevent binder drainage. Waste jute fibre (WJF) enhances the sustainable performance of SMA pavements. WJF, a biodegradable and renewable natural fibre, stabilizes asphalt mixtures and enhances mechanical properties while lowering environmental effects. WJF enhances SMA’s tensile strength, promotes recycling, and reduces waste, carbon, and synthetic fibre use. WJF was added in 5 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm lengths at 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, and 0.7% by weight of the mixture. This study examined the volumetric, mechanical, and design methods of WJF-reinforced SMA mix using the Marshall test, drain-down, indirect tensile strength, and compressive strength. Optimum asphalt content, air voids, VMA, and Marshall stability were improved. Fibre-containing SMA mixtures have lower bulk-specific gravity. Marshall’s stability rises and declines with fibre content. The test findings show that 0.5% WJF at 10 mm improved stability by 19.09%, ITS by 19.24%, and compressive strength by 21.36%.

Diffuselet method for three-dimensional turbulent mixing of a cloudy air filament
  • Jul 16, 2025
  • Physical Review Fluids
  • Vladyslav Pushenko + 4 more

The mixing properties of vapor content, temperature, and particle fields are of paramount importance in cloud turbulence as they pertain to essential processes, such as cloud water droplet evaporation and entrainment. Our study examines the mixing of a single cloudy air (which implies droplet-laden) filament with its clear air environment, a characteristic process at the cloud edge, in two ways. The first consists of three-dimensional combined Euler-Lagrangian direct numerical simulations which describe the scalar supersaturation as an Eulerian field and the individual cloud water droplets as an ensemble of Lagrangian tracers. The second way builds on the recently developed diffuselet method, a kinematic Lagrangian framework that decomposes a scalar filament into a collection of small sections subject to deformation by local stirring and cross-sheet diffusion. The Schmidt number is Sc=0.7. The entrainment process causes a deformation of the supersaturated cloud filament in combination with diffusion until the system reaches a well-mixed equilibrium state, which implies for the present configuration that all droplets are evaporated. We compare the time dependence of the mean square and probability density function of the supersaturation field. For the initial period of the mixing process, they agree very well; at later stages, deviations caused by nonzero mean of the conserved scalar are observed. For the cases including cloud water droplets, we also investigate the impact of droplet number density and condensation growth response. Turbulence causes deviations from the d2 law similar to recent experiments in sprays. A simulation at a Schmidt number that is by a factor of 100 larger than in clouds improves the agreement between simulation and diffuselet method significantly. The latter result promotes the diffuselet framework as an efficient parametrization for turbulent high-Sc mixing which can reduce the resolution efforts of the viscous-convective range of scalar turbulence.

Grounded theory as a framework for explanatory sequential mixed-method design, an example from educational research
  • Jun 20, 2025
  • Quality & Quantity
  • Michalis Christodoulou

Abstract In this article we provide a methodological argument for conducting mixed-methods (MM) research by using Grounded Theory (GT) methodology. The contribution to the mixed method research is twofold. First, in contrast to the standard approaches to the sequential explanatory designs in which the qual strand comes after the quant, we argue that in a MM-GT design the qual strand precedes because GT methodology aims at explaining the participants’ main concern under conditions. Second, the GT framework guides data analysis for both the qual and the quant data set, not only for the qual. We show how the qualitative part of connecting categories during theoretical coding, shapes the index construction in the quantitative part. To illuminate, we provide the details of an explanatory sequential MM-GT educational research project in which teachers’ views on refugee/migrant students’ integration into the school system are examined.

Synergistic effect of particle packing method, aggregate saturation levels, and paste content in improving the performance of high volume fine recycled aggregate concrete
  • May 15, 2025
  • Scientific Reports
  • Namratha V Khanapur + 3 more

Using fine recycled concrete aggregate (FRCA) is challenging because of the presence of mortar fines in higher quantities. Past studies have reported a few approaches (Presoaking FRCA, surface treatment of FRCA, use of mineral admixture, method of mix proportioning, and mixing FRCA concrete) to improve the performance of FRCA concrete. However, these studies recommend the deployment of 30–50% FRCA as a substitute for natural fine aggregate. Additionally, the treatment methods are not cost-effective. To address these limitations and upscale the use of FRCA, this study introduces the particle packing method (PPM) for mix proportioning, a modified presoaking method for concrete mixing, and presents the effect of aggregate saturation level and paste content on the performance of concrete. Concrete mixes with 0–100% FRCA, 15% and 20% extra paste contents, and different aggregate saturation levels (50–100%) were prepared. The mechanical and durability properties of concrete, such as compressive strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, abrasion resistance, sorptivity, water permeability, and chloride ingress, were analysed by replacing 0–100% crushed stone sand (CSS) with FRCA. The initial results showed a significant reduction in the mechanical and durability properties of fully saturated 100% FRCA concrete than the control mix. However, substantial improvement was seen by using partially saturated (50%) FRCA, and 20% paste content. The effect of decreasing FRCA saturation level was prominent. On using 50% saturated FRCA, the compressive strength, flexural strength, static and dynamic modulus of elasticity, and abrasion resistance, improved by 16%, 14%, 14%, 8%, 13%; and exhibited a lower sorptivity, water permeability, and chloride ingress of 56%, 14%, and 34%, respectively. The microstructural analysis showed that by reducing the saturation level and increasing the paste content a denser interfacial transition zone can be obtained. Furthermore, using PPM for mix proportioning is beneficial in minimizing the cement content for FRCA concrete mixes. The study demonstrates the synergistic effect of the PPM mix proportioning method, modified mixing method, 20% extra paste content, and partially (50%) saturated FRCA in improving the performance of untreated high-volume FRCA concrete, thereby supporting a sustainable approach.

The accuracy of the diagnosis code is a statement that shows a code for a convincing diagnosis, and has been said to be certain and clear according to the ICD-10 guidelines. The purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of the analysis of the accuracy of injury codes and external causes of injury in emergency care electronic medical records at the Jakarta Islamic Hospital Sukapura. This research is descriptive research with a Mix Methode approach. Data collection techniques using observation and interview methods. Samples were taken using saturated sampling techniques totaling 81 electronic medical records of emergency care patients. The accuracy of the injury code is 22% correct, and the accuracy of the external cause of injury code incorporated in traffic accident cases and other accident cases is 0% correct. The low accuracy of injury codes was due to not adding character 5, block code errors, and errors in determining code categories. The results of the accuracy of the external cause of injury code obtained were 0% correct because 80 electronic medical records of emergency care patients did not contain the code for the external cause of injury. Factors that hinder the accuracy of injury codes and external causes of injury are influenced by man factors, namely high workload, dependence on ICD-10 codes on doctors, and lack of feedback audits. Then the influence of material factors, namely the incompleteness of supporting documents, lack of detail in diagnosis, and lack of chronological letters of events. Then the influence of method factors, namely unsupportive policies and procedures, lack of training and understanding, and weak application of external cause of injury codes.

Digital badges: Pinning down employer challenges
  • Feb 19, 2025
  • Journal of Teaching and Learning for Graduate Employability
  • Joy Perkins + 1 more

Digital badges hold considerable potential for employers and recruiters, as they evidence accomplishments of skills and competencies at a more granular level than a traditional degree certificate. Badges are a validated, online graphical representation of an achievement, which is accomplished by undertaking criteria-based learning activities. Despite the established educational benefits of badges in higher education, limited research has been conducted into employer awareness, acceptance, and use of digital badges in recruitment practices. To address this research gap, a mixed method study combining quantitative and qualitative data collection was conducted before and during the COVID-19 health pandemic. Approximately 700 employers were emailed and invited to complete the initial survey and 73 responded. One of the major survey findings is that 97% of respondents were unfamiliar with the concept of digital badges. Significantly, however, despite the lack of employer awareness there was no widespread resistance to the concept of badges, but a strong appeal for further clarification of their value, credibility, and security. Analysis of the data reveals stronger partnership working, between the higher education sector and employers, is pivotal to establish effective digital credentialing systems. Recommendations for higher education institutions have emerged from this study, which aim to balance pedagogical digital badge practice with employer needs. Such synergies are crucial to address the changing skills agenda, to prepare students to thrive in physical and virtual work environments. Given the paucity of research in this field, further studies are warranted, to investigate the impact of digital badges on the employer community.

  • SPC Journal of Social Sciences
  • Jurij Renkas + 1 more

This article aims to address recent debates on wage increases, the flattening wage structure, and effective labor remuneration systems by developing a model that assesses real wage levels, human capital utilization, and management quality within a company. Using mixed meth-ods, including a literature review and a case study of Komfort-Eko Ltd., the study highlights the importance of the constant a =0.08 [1/year] in analyzing wage systems. Key findings led to the development of the Economic Activity Function (EAF), which estimates the Management Index M, the Labour Productivity Index Q, and the overall wage level based on financial data, providing a new framework for evaluating management performance and forecasting future remuneration levels. The EAF model enables simulation of financial scenarios, aiding policymakers and managers in optimizing remuneration strategies and enhancing employee motivation systems. This study contrib-utes to human resource management literature by deriving the Management Index M and refining a model for labor productivity measure-ment, supported by the theoretical role of a constant parameter, while using the EAF to forecast future wage funds, including bonuses.

Experiences of cultural stress among U.S. citizen migrants: A mixed method approach.
  • Oct 1, 2024
  • Journal of counseling psychology
  • María Pineros-Leano + 8 more

On September 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, devastating the archipelago and forcing thousands of Puerto Ricans to migrate to the U.S. mainland. Guided by a cultural stress theory framework, the present mixed method study examined how various cultural stressors impact participants' daily interactions and mental health outcomes. A total of 319 adult Hurricane Maria survivors residing on the U.S. mainland participated in the study. A mixed method sequential explanatory design was used. First, we used latent profile analysis (LPA) and multinomial logistic regression to identify the varied cultural stress experiences that participants had. Then we used data from semistructured interviews to better understand the experiences of participants classified into the different LPA profiles. Four profiles were identified: "moderate cultural stress" (35%), "overall low" (29%), "high cultural stress" (26%), and "low language stress" (10%). Multinomial regression indicated that members of the moderate cultural stress, high cultural stress, and low language stress profiles all reported significantly higher depressive and anxiety symptoms compared to members of the overall low profile. Qualitative data exemplified the daily experiences of participants placed into each profile, demonstrating that participants have rich and varied experiences that can contribute to their mental health symptoms. The present study documents the contributions of hurricane trauma and cultural stress vis-à-vis current mental health symptoms. Clinicians working with Hurricane Maria survivors should be cognizant of and inquire about migration-related cultural stressors including discrimination, feelings of being unwelcomed, and difficulty communicating in the destination community's dominant language. • Lauren Copeland

The purpose of this study is to bridge the gap between sustainable fashion and customer purchase intentions by analysing the current trends and offering techniques to increase sustainable fashion awareness and overcome price consumption issues among Generation Z (Gen Z) consumers. A mixed methods approach was employed in this study consisting of online surveys and focus groups surrounding the topic of sustainable apparel consumption among the Gen Z age group. Focus groups served to lead to an online survey of questions to help better understand the phenomena on an exploratory scale. Three focus groups of eight to ten volunteers each aged 18–25 from a large Midwestern university took part in 60-minute discussions regarding their understanding of fast fashion and their purchase intentions/awareness of ethical issues within the apparel industry. Online surveys were conducted through the online platform Qualtrics consisting of 29 questions with a total of 445 participants ranging from 18 to 23 years old taking part in the online survey. Main themes found in the focus groups are the idea of shopping second hand, laziness among consumers and the quality of garments. Surveys found that this age group was willing to pay up to 25 per cent more for a sustainable apparel item and that uniqueness of the item was of utmost importance. Implications for brands and retailers as well as academics are presented.
