Flexible hardware for teaching and research in renewable energy and off-grid microgrids.

Microgrids are an active research field due to their integration of renewable and non-renewable energy sources alongside energy storage systems to supply both DC and AC loads. While existing studies extensively explore hierarchical control structures, focusing on algorithm design and optimization, practical implementation remains challenging due to system complexity. This paper presents the development of a low-power microgrid hardware platform based on power converters and controllers, enabling experimental validation of the second and third levels of hierarchical control. The platform enables real-time energy management using FPPT algorithms while providing an intuitive graphical interface for data visualization and system monitoring. Experimental results confirm the system's capability of dynamically managing energy flows, ensuring stable operation under varying load conditions. The system demonstrates reliable operation handling loads of up to 100 W, with scalability to 200 W, providing an effective tool for testing and research in microgrid control strategies.

Progressing Towards Sustainability: Power-Sharing Control Topologies for Microgrids with Parallel-Connected Inverters for Grid Stability

Parallel-connected inverters play a crucial role in the grid interface of distributed generation. The world is now moving towards sustainability, while shifting from traditional power systems to renewable energies. With the emergence of microgrids as an alternative for an uninterruptable power supply, there are significant challenges in terms of control strategies. Ensuring stability and reliability in electrical systems amidst the integration of diverse energy sources with varying power ratings into a distribution network presents the need for advanced control techniques. These techniques must effectively maintain power system quality, stability, and reliability when operating in microgrids with parallel-connected inverters. Achieving accurate power sharing under different operating conditions, compensating for voltage and frequency deviations, and maintaining a well-controlled microgrid system are essential objectives. This paper focuses on the categorization of droop-based control with multi-loop insertion approaches. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive analysis of inverter-based microgrid control techniques, emphasizing power-sharing accuracy in various conditions, and presents a detailed comparison of different control strategies.

Control of PV-Hydro Micro-Grid with Energy Storage System Controlled Through Bidirectional Converter

Traditional ELC for MHP system is designed in such a way that it could be used to maintain the speed of the MHP plant in an isolated micro-grid system where the excess of the electrical energy is dumped into the dummy load during lightly loaded condition. But this system seems ineffective and carries the limitations such as waste of the energy during the lightly loaded period, unstable system during the peak load period, system instability during connected with the grid system and so on. Thus, this report aims to suggest a measure for the limitations through the project,” Control of PV-Hydro micro-grid with energy storage system controlled through bidirectional converter”. All the components are designed, calibrated and synchronized with each other using the MATLAB Simulation Software. Initially, PV plant and MHP plant is designed with capacity of 50KW and 100KW respectively. Inside the PV plant inverter and inverter controller is designed in such a way that is always produces the 400V across the output terminal despite the variation in Temperature and the Irradiation. There by implementing the MPPT (Perturbation and observation (P&O)) algorithm we were able to design the PV System Next, is we have designed the MHP plant that produces the 100KW power at 400V whose excitation and rotor speed is maintained throughout the operation at any load condition. The bidirectional converter with the battery backup system is responsible for maintaining the rotor stability at any load condition i.e. either lightly loaded or heavily loaded condition. The main aim of this project is designing a system where the system will store the excess of the energy in the battery during the lightly loaded condition while maintaining the rotor stability whereas the system will then again act as a source during the peak period when the PV-Hydro system is unable to meet the load demand.

An efficient safety prediction and control strategy using fuzzy neural network architecture search in islanded microgrids

In islanded microgrids, voltage and frequency deviations are critical indicators of system safety. Effectively managing these deviations to achieve a dynamic balance between generation and consumption under load and power fluctuations is essential for maintaining stable system operation. This paper proposes a voltage-frequency control scheme based on an accelerated proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, with an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) optimized via neural architecture search (NAS) as a preventive control strategy, tailored to the data distribution characteristics observed in microgrid applications. This approach leverages a hybrid differential evolution and particle swarm optimization (DEPSO) algorithm combined with a novel supernet weight sharing mechanism, enhancing the efficiency of ANFIS architecture search and reducing dependency on expert knowledge. Through dynamic evaluation and control, this method aims to improve the safety and stability of islanded microgrids under load and power disturbances. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method shows significant advantages in microgrid safety prediction and control, quickly restoring system stability and ensuring the secure operation of the microgrid in the face of load and power fluctuations.

The optimized use of electric vehicles has great potential, as their use is possible not only for their charging, but also for auxiliary services. For a more reliable operation of the Microgrid, and when there are no conditions for returning energy to the network, it can be given through the energy storage system to the batteries of electric vehicles and stored there. At the same time, two-way energy transfer is used: both to and from the electric vehicle. The study of the operation of the DC Microgrid control system was carried out by simulation modeling in Matlab on the developed model, the control is carried out according to the developed algorithm of connecting and disconnecting the fleet of electric vehicles according to the daily profile of their capacities. Research has confirmed the feasibility of using an intermediate (buffer) storage system when using the concept of two-way energy exchange between an electric vehicle and Microgrid, and the efficiency of the charge management system has been evaluated.
