An investigative study on the volume of sediment accumulation in Tagwai dam reservoir using bathymetric and geostatistical analysis techniques

Sustainable provision of potable water for domestic, industrial and development purposes in Minna has been elusive over the years due to several factors, including lack of spatial database (locations, depth, area, volume, etc.) and the threat by siltation and land use activities within the corridors of the reservoir area. This paper utilizes the data collected from fieldwork to investigate the volume of sediment accumulated in Tagwai reservoir basin over a period of 31 years since the dam was constructed in 1978. Sediment accumulation study in a dam is one of the useful methods of gathering information needed for its monitoring, maintenance, and sustainability. Leica TC1201 (total station) was used for perimeter survey, while Raytheon DE-119 (echo sounder) was adopted for depth measurement. A comparison was made between the designed reservoir volume (28.3 × 106 m3) and the computed volume (20.4 × 106 m3). A loss of about (7.9 × 106 m3) was recorded. Sediment accumulation gave 0.25 Mm3, a spread of about (0.80%) annually. Prediction and error analysis was done using geostatistical methods of Kriging/Co-kriging and Empirical Bayesian Kriging in ArcGIS software. The predicted root mean square errors are 0.0963 and 0.1189 for both methods which presented a good representation while testing with other available methods. It can be concluded that the storage capacity of the reservoir is depleting which has further exacerbated the shortage of water experienced in Minna metropolis therefore, urgent attention for de-silting is highly recommended.

In this essay the author scrutinises one part of the OSINT, namely the phase of collecting data and information, or in other words examines the dynamics of open information sources and open information. And as a result, the author presents whether certain information gathering means and methods are allowed or not to be used under OSINT and identifies such course of conducts which cannot be used thereunder.

Szanse i ograniczenia w realizacji programów rewitalizacji obszarów wiejskich województwa małopolskiego

Przedmiotem prezentowanych rozważań są programy rewitalizacji zgłoszone do realizacji przez gminne jednostki samorządu terytorialnego (JST) w województwie małopolskim w latach 2015–2016. Za cel opracowania przyjęto ocenę założeń rewitalizacji oraz określenia możliwości ich realizacji w kontekście pozostających od dawna do rozwiązania problemów społeczno-ekonomicznych obszarów wiejskich w poszczególnych rejonach województwa małopolskiego. Ponadto w opracowaniu skupiono się na ukazaniu potrzeb społeczno-ekonomicznych małopolskich wsi, ich dużego zróżnicowania w przestrzeni regionu oraz na omówieniu różnych ograniczeń, które mogą osłabiać skuteczność wdrażanych programów rewitalizacyjnych. Cel pracy zrealizowano dzięki analizie dokumentów będących podstawą wdrażania programów rewitalizacyjnych, przedstawieniu zróżnicowania rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego gmin wiejskich na podstawie analizy wskaźnikowej oraz dokonania typologii obszarów wiejskich regionu. Kluczową kwestią dla znacznej części małopolskich wsi pozostaje ich niska efektywność ekonomiczna, wynikająca z dużego bezrobocia rejestrowanego i ukrytego, z niskiej aktywności mieszkańców w sferze pozarolniczej czy też z malejącej efektywności gospodarowania gruntami. Wiele obszarów cechuje postępujące wykluczanie z rozwoju i brak zdolności do wykorzystania posiadanych zasobów jako podstawy dobrej gospodarki lokalnej. W pracy dużo uwagi poświęcono uwarunkowaniom skuteczności programu rewitalizacji w rozwiązywaniu problemów wsi, które, w przekonaniu autorów, wiążą się głównie z pozyskaniem przy jego realizacji szerokiego poparcia mieszkańców, lokalnych przedsiębiorców i zaangażowania władz samorządowych, a następnie z odpowiednim wsparciem poszczególnych gmin przez działania szczebla regionalnego, a także z większą elastycznością tych programów, tak w odniesieniu do celu rewitalizacji, jak i do lokalizacji zadań w przestrzeni gminy. Działania związane z tym programem powinny znacznie poprawić te właśnie sfery potrzeb mieszkańców. Powinny też ograniczyć istniejącą peryferyjność wielu wsi widoczną w dużym oddaleniu i trudnym dostępie nie tylko do większych ośrodków społeczno-gospodarczych, ale także do upowszechnianych dzisiaj sposobów pozyskiwania informacji, kontaktu z kulturą, wiedzą, służących budowaniu silnych więzi społecznych i rozwojowi cywilizacyjnemu.

The benefit of intelligence officers

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the extent to which intelligence officers integrated at the patrol level contribute to successful case outcomes through information sharing.Design/methodology/approachThis study utilizes multinomial logistic regression to analyze the outcomes of three years of Intelligence Officer Reports (IORs) submitted by officers trained in the Phoenix Police Department’s Intelligence Officer Program.FindingsThe majority of IORs are either tangible case successes or intelligence successes that have the capacity to become these, as opposed to non-successes. The type of success is impacted by a number of predictors. These include case categorization, nature of crime, information-gathering methods and perceived validity of information. Perceived reliability of information was the only non-significant predictor.Research limitations/implicationsThe study suggests the benefits of looking at multiple predictors of success in understanding the value of information gathered by intelligence officers in the field. Limitations include a fair amount of missing data and potential lack of generalizability to other agencies. Future research will also consider alternative ways of measuring success and the nesting of reports within officers.Practical implicationsThe study provides insight into key factors for optimizing tangible case outcomes when institutionalizing intelligence-led policing at the patrol level.Originality/valueThis is the first study to consider how intelligence-led policing at the patrol level may influence case outcomes, and, in turn, what factors may contribute to this. Findings provide some initial considerations for optimizing desirable case outcomes.

Raw Food Consumption And Its Effects On Human Health: An Analysis Of Halalan Toyyiban Concept

This study aimed to analyze the status of consuming raw food and health effects on the human body by elaborating views of moslems scholars through the concept of halalan toyyiban, as well as to determine the advantages and disadvantages of consuming raw foods from health and food expert. The method that had been used was through information-gathering method; to explain and analyze the related data. This study found that most of muslim jurists agreed to allow the consumption of raw foods as long as those foods come from halal raw meat, slaughtered in accordance with food guidance in Islam.

Strategic decision-making process (SDMP) in times of crisis: Evidence from Greek banks

This paper investigates the strategic decision-making process (SDMP) of Greek banks’ top management in the context of profound organisational changes introduced in 2012 as a result of the 2008 global financial crisis. It focuses on the impact of three key dimensions of the SDMP, namely, rationality, intuition and political behaviour, relating to four changes introduced, namely, acquisitions, branch network rationalisation, integration of information technology (IT) and downsizing of operations and personnel. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted, targeting Greek banks’ top management. Out of 140 questionnaires, 78 were returned, a 55.71% response rate. Data was analysed using structural equation modelling. Research findings identify rationality as a key dimension of SDMP for all organisational changes, as there was high focus on identifying and analysing all required information, use of external financial advisors, and reliance on multiple methods of information gathering. Decision-makers used their intuition in the form of past experience when making acquisition decisions, whilst their personal judgment and “inner voice” were neglected. Finally, political behaviour was not displayed during this process, as decision-makers were open with each other about their interests and preferences, and there was no bargaining, negotiation or use of power amongst them. One limitation was that of not considering all the factors that might help measure SDMP characteristics. Also, this study was conducted in a period of political and financial uncertainty for Greek banks, as well as for the Greek economy in general, so findings may not be generalizable to other industries and countries. Conducting interviews could have offered deeper insight as well. This study’s value lies in the fact that the organisational changes were determined by Greece’s leaders, and thus the Greek banks had to operate under a dynamic, inflexible and non-autonomous environment. Also, this study extends prior SDMP research by examining the impact of the three key SDMP dimensions on four types of organisational change.

The article is devoted to the study of the probabilistic approach to the political forecasts obtained by interviewing experts. The characteristic features of the collection of expert information are described, in particular, the use of network methods for obtaining probabilistic estimates from specialists. Particular attention is paid to various options for interpreting the estimates that are probabilistic. The authors come to the conclusion that an important role in scientific prediction is played not only by prediction methods, although the value of obtained estimates depends on the correctly chosen and professionally conducted method of information gathering, but also by the interpretation of obtained predictive probabilities.

PD24 Data Collection By Patient Groups To Provide Patient Input

Introduction:The Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) Common Drug Review and pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review programs incorporate perspectives and experiences from patients and family members who might be affected by the resulting funding recommendation. Perspectives are provided by patient groups who use different approaches to gather patient input.Methods:We analyzed a random sample of ninety-three patient input submissions, drawn from a sampling frame of 532 submissions given to CADTH between June 2010 and June 2016. We looked at how groups described their information gathering methods in the original submissions or the published Clinical Guidance Reports.Results:Approaches were categorized according to whether they involved primary (n = 86) or secondary data collection (n = 130) and further sub categorized according to how data was collected. Primary data included: personal experiences, as described by the submission's author (n = 16); surveys conducted specifically for the submission (n=34); and new interviews of patients and family members on disease and drug experiences (n = 36). Half (forty-seven of ninety-three) of the patient input submissions included experiences of one or more patients who had received the drug under review. Secondary data included: published literature (n = 31); existing surveys (n = 27); past conversations with patients and family members (n = 36); experiences of patient group staff interacting with patients and family members (n = 19); and advice from clinical experts (n = 17). Many patient input submissions (sixty-eight out of ninety-three) reported multiple approaches to collect data. Use of two approaches was most common (thirty-seven out of ninety-three) with five or six approaches used in three of ninety-three submissions.Conclusions:Despite resource and timing challenges, many patient groups gather primary data to share with CADTH and find individuals with experience of the drug under review.

Association of self-care status with some relevant factors in middle-aged women in their early menopausal stage.

BACKGROUND:Through self-care, people can solve their health-related problems through increasing their awareness and correcting their lifestyles.OBJECTIVES:To determine the association of self-care status with some relevant factors in Kashanian middle-aged women in their early menopausal stage.METHODS:This is a cross-sectional study on 351 women in the age range of 45–60 years. Women were selected based on cluster sampling method from the individuals at health-care centers in Kashan, Iran. Researcher-constructed questionnaire on self-care was used. The validity and the reliability of the questionnaire were calculated. The information gathering method was questionnaire completion by the study participants or interview with them. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS 16 software. T-test, ANOVA, Spearman correlation, and linear regression analysis were applied.RESULTS:The mean (±standard deviation) of the self-care score was 108.14 ± 20.43. Self-care scores were weak in 13.92%, intermediate in 71.02%, and good in 15.06%. Regression analysis showed that the mean of self-care was significantly higher in those with higher educational level of women's (P = 0.045) and their spouses (P = 0.001). Women who were covered by insurance also showed higher self-care; in addition, there was no significant relationship between self-care and participants’ job, spouses’ jobs, marital status, marital satisfaction, economic satisfaction, number of children, number of households, and type of accommodation (P > 0.05).CONCLUSION:The results indicate that self-care is inadequate and that the level of education of couples and insurance coverage has a positive effect on the level of self-care in postmenopausal women. To promote self-care in old age, education and empowerment can be considered.

The Russian-speakers in the CIS countries: migration activity and preservation of the Russian language

The purpose of this article is to analyze migration activity in the post-Soviet space, changes in ethnic composition in the CIS countries and their role in peculiarities of preservation, functioning and representations about the Russian language, its main characteristics and proficiency among population from CIS countries. Empirical data was collected during the sociological research, fulfilled in 2017 in six countries members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS): Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, n = 1400. Information-gathering methods included formal interviews in the place of residence of population aged 18 to 75 years. Several indicators were used to achieve the goal: representations about the Russian language; assessment of the role of the Russian language; main characteristics of the Russian language; Russian language proficiency. The article states that in considering principal peculiarities of functioning of Russian in the post-Soviet space demographic indicators such as number of population, number of ethnic groups, proportion of Russian and indigenous population in CIS countries, changes in number of Russians after the dissolution of the USSR, external migration indicators should be taken into account. It was concluded that the Russian language proficiency is important for its preservation and functioning on the territory of CIS countries, the Russian language is well preserved in Belarus, at the middle level in Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and at the lowest level in Tajikistan. The popularity of Russian in respondents’ evaluations is determined by non-linguistic factors and characteristics, and associated with successful foreign policy of Russia and development of economic and trade relations of Russia with other countries. The development of the tourist sector and attractiveness of Russia for immigration are significant catalysts of interest towards the Russian language, influence of targeted programs, aimed at enhancing the positions of the Russian language and popularization of the Russian culture estimated as less significant. Attractiveness of Russia for immigration, increase of migration streams are important incentives for development and preservation of the Russian language.

THE EFFECT OF CRITICAL THINKING AND KNOWLEDGE SHARING ON THE PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE OF SPORTS TEAM LEADERS AT TRABZON UNIVERSITIES, TURKEY

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of critical thinking and knowledge sharing on the professional performance of sports team managers in Trabzon. In terms of the purpose of the research is the applied type and in terms of method is descriptive and correlational, and in terms of information gathering method is a survey method. The statistical population of this study included all managers of sports teams of Trabzon universities (N=300). Morgan table was used to determine the sample size and 169 people who were selected by simple random sampling method. To collect the required data, Paterson professional performance (1998), Ricktes Critical Thinking (2003) and Yong Chi Knowledge Sharing Questionnaire (2006) were used to answer the questionnaire. SPSS software was used for data analysis and multivariate regression coefficient was used to analyze the hypotheses. The results of the research indicate that critical thinking and knowledge sharing on the professional performance of sport team managers in Trabzon city have a significant positive effect (p <0.05). Evidence-based decision-making: awareness, process and practice in the management classroom

In an increasingly information rich environment, it is important to teach students decision-making alongside information gathering and management methods. This paper examines the implementation of evidence-based decision-making in a first year introduction to management course at a large university in the Midwestern United States. Students learned decision awareness, decision-making process creation and decision practice alongside areas of management and basic business principles. Students perceived increased skill in decision-making, both individually and in groups. This venture has implications for others looking to help students not only learn experientially, but also improve critical thinking in practice.

Mexico: Internal security, surveillance, and authoritarianism

The recent violence linked to drug trafficking in Mexico has been dealt with by the federal government by increasing police presence on the streets and involving the army in public safety activities. This has not decreased violence but has increased cases of human rights violation, and the capabilities of non-regulated surveillance and monitoring of the population. Thus, the new internal security law suggests that the police and the army will be able to “develop intelligence activities” by “any information gathering method.” They will also be able to require information from other authorities that they consider necessary to ensure “constitutional order,” as well as the “continuity” and “survival” of State institutions. The law has generated a wide public debate that contrasts two competing discourses.

Disclosure bias for group versus individual reporting of violence amongst conflict-affected adolescent girls in DRC and Ethiopia.

Methodologies to measure gender-based violence (GBV) have received inadequate attention, especially in humanitarian contexts where vulnerabilities to violence are exacerbated. This paper compares the results from individual audio computer-assisted self-administered (ACASI) survey interviews with results from participatory social mapping activities, employed with the same sample in two different post-conflict contexts. Eighty-seven internally displaced adolescent girls from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and 78 Sudanese girls living in Ethiopian refugee camps were interviewed using the two methodologies. Results revealed that the group-based qualitative method elicited narratives of violence focusing on events perpetrated by strangers or members of the community more distantly connected to girls. In contrast, ACASI interviews revealed violence predominantly perpetrated by family members and intimate partners. These findings suggest that group-based methods of information gathering frequently used in the field may be more susceptible to socially accepted narratives. Specifically, our findings suggest group-based methods may produce results showing that sexual violence perpetrated by strangers (e.g., from armed groups in the conflict) is more prevalent than violence perpetrated by family and intimate partners. To the extent this finding is true, it may lead to a skewed perception that adolescent GBV involving strangers is a more pressing issue than intimate partner and family-based sexual violence, when in fact, both are of great concern.

The purpose of the study was to determine development trends of online media and their audience in Ukraine and ascertain of their mediametric characteristics. Special attention was paid to the social media and especially to the creation and distribution of user-generated content on web pages. For this purpose, a range of qualitative and quantitative methods was used, in particular, the method of statistical analysis of data with taking into account the statistical error of measurement and uniformity of distribution of respondents in the middle of representational sample. The methods of comparison and content analysis were also used. The main method of gathering information was a survey of 1576 respondents who answered 16 proposed questions, most of the respondents were aged 18-30. The survey investigated the following questions: purpose and frequency of social media usage, the sources, which are often applied by the audience to receive news, level of trust to information in World Wide Web, platforms, which were used to find information, etc. Questions, which help to determine how readers consume information, how they read material, importance of illustrative, interactivity, multimedia elements, etc. were investigated. As a result of the study we asserted the state of Ukrainian audience of online media in early 2017 and trends of its development. We submitted the detailed measurements of sampled online media readers, obtained through the online survey and by applying cloud technology for statistical studies, particularly Polldaddy. Special attention was devoted to the development of social media and their audience, the peculiarities of their development with the specific Ukrainian segment of the World Wide Web. Based on these data, we studied the preferences of websites users, investigated the perception of journalistic products in Networks and the distribution of user-generated content on web pages. We analysed of the usage and perception of various illustrative content and its distribution characteristics with help of modern information technology. Studies of other scholars who investigated these issues were also considered, and their results were reflected in the conclusions. The trends and patterns of the network, including social media and their audience, were determined.

A rapid evaluation method of existing building applied photovoltaic (BAPV) potential

By analyzing and making a comparison between five methods of geometrical information gathering in existing buildings, this paper shows that the method of geometrical information gathering in buildings based on the 3-dimensional (3D) geometrical reconstruction is suitable for the evaluation of existing building applied photovoltaic (BAPV) potential. Then, it tested the accuracy of different ways of image acquisition by using low-rise, multi-storey and high-rise buildings as experimental subjects. Moreover, based on a building in Tianjin, an evaluation method is proposed to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the method. Finally, we developed a reliably and feasibly evaluation method to evaluate the BAPV potential.

Development of SPIES (Space Intelligent Eyeing System) for smart vehicle tracing and tracking

SPIES or Space-based Intelligent Eyeing System is an intelligent technology which can be utilized for various applications such as gathering spatial information of features on Earth, tracking system for the movement of an object, tracing system to trace the history information, monitoring driving behavior, security and alarm system as an observer in real time and many more. SPIES as will be developed and supplied modularly will encourage the usage based on needs and affordability of users. SPIES are a complete system with camera, GSM, GPS/GNSS and G-Sensor modules with intelligent function and capabilities. Mainly the camera is used to capture pictures and video and sometimes with audio of an event. Its usage is not limited to normal use for nostalgic purpose but can be used as a reference for security and material of evidence when an undesirable event such as crime occurs. When integrated with space based technology of the Global Navigational Satellite System (GNSS), photos and videos can be recorded together with positioning information. A product of the integration of these technologies when integrated with Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) and Geographic Information System (GIS) will produce innovation in the form of information gathering methods in still picture or video with positioning information that can be conveyed in real time via the web to display location on the map hence creating an intelligent eyeing system based on space technology. The importance of providing global positioning information is a challenge but overcome by SPIES even in areas without GNSS signal reception for the purpose of continuous tracking and tracing capability

Do Patients Look Up Their Therapists Online? An Exploratory Study Among Patients in Psychotherapy.

Background The use of the Internet as a source of health information is growing among people who experience mental health difficulties. The increase in Internet use has led to questions about online information-seeking behaviors, for example, how psychotherapists and patients use the Internet to ascertain information about each other. The notion of psychotherapists seeking information about their patients online (patient-targeted googling, PTG) has been identified and explored. However, the idea of patients searching for information online about their psychotherapists (therapist-targeted googling, TTG) and the associated motives and effects on the therapeutic relationship remain unclear. Objective This study investigated former and current German-speaking psychotherapy patients’ behavior and attitudes relating to TTG. In addition, patients’ methods of information gathering, motives, and success in searching for information were examined. Furthermore, patients’ experiences and perceptions of PTG were explored. Methods Overall, 238 former and current psychotherapy patients responded to a new questionnaire specifically designed to assess the frequency, motives, use, and outcomes of TTG as well as experiences and perceptions of PTG. The study sample was a nonrepresentative convenience sample recruited online via several German-speaking therapy platforms and self-help forums.Results Of the 238 former and current patients who responded, 106 (44.5%) had obtained information about their therapists; most of them (n=85, 80.2%) had used the Internet for this. Besides curiosity, motives behind information searches included the desire to get to know the therapist better by attempting to search for both professional and private information. TTG appeared to be associated with phases of therapy in which patients felt that progress was not being made. Patients being treated for personality disorders appear to engage more frequently in TTG (rphi = 0.21; P=.004). In general, however, information about therapists sought for online was often not found. Furthermore, most patients refrained from telling their therapist about their information searches. Conclusions Patients appear to engage in TTG to obtain both professional and private information about their psychotherapists. TTG can be viewed as a form of client-initiated disclosure. It is therefore important to include TTG as a subject in therapists' education and also to raise awareness within patient education. This investigation provides the first findings into TTG to begin debate on this subject.
