Narrative Immersion Versus Short-Form Video Delivery: Emotional Tone and Affective–Cognitive Pathways to Mental Health Engagement

This study examines how human-crafted narratives and AI-generated short-form messages engage audiences in mental health communication through affective and cognitive mechanisms. Using a 2 × 3 online experiment (N = 600) in South Korea, participants were exposed to narrative or AI-generated short-form messages framed with positive, negative, or neutral emotion. Drawing on narrative persuasion and dual-process frameworks, we tested a serial mediation model in which transportation and perceived message effectiveness (PME) sequentially mediated the effect of message format on mental health engagement intentions. Results showed that message format indirectly influenced engagement intentions through a sequential affective–cognitive pathway, but the operation of this pathway varied by emotional tone. Under negative emotional framing, engagement intentions were driven by a full serial mediation process, whereas transportation alone negatively predicted engagement when PME was controlled. Under positive framing, engagement intentions were primarily driven by transportation. These findings demonstrate that emotional tone conditions the psychological mechanisms of narrative persuasion, with negative emotion promoting deeper cognitive elaboration and positive emotion enhancing immersive engagement. This study advances theory on digital mental health communication and offers practical guidance for emotion-sensitive storytelling strategies aimed at fostering mental health engagement.

Fewer Words, Greater Impact: The Efficacy of Terse Inoculation

Inoculation research has traditionally evaluated both treatment and attack messages delivered in lengthy formats—paragraphs of text with extended arguments. In this study, in addition to using a traditional inoculation message format, inoculation messages were delivered via terse SMS/text messages. Specifically, inoculation was delivered as part of a three-terse-message series or a one-terse-message series in which inoculation was conceptualized (in alignment with the medical analogy) in parallel to the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines for COVID-19 that required multiple doses for “fully vaccinated” status. Attack messages were designed as succinct social media messages. Results reflected parallels to the biological metaphor, as the three-dose regimen elicited higher resistance compared to the control and the one-dose regimen, the latter of which itself provided higher resistance compared to control.

PurposeTo test the relative effectiveness of culturally tailored vs non-tailored messages in narrative and non-narrative formats on empowering Mexican American young adults.DesignTwo parallel randomized controlled trials comparing: (1) cultural tailoring (holding message format constant) and (2) message format (narrative vs infographic; both are culturally tailored).SettingOnline experiment with participants recruited through a commercial national pool; Mexican American women aged 18-29 years (N = 767).InterventionSingle exposure to 1 of 3 messages: standard infographic, culturally tailored infographic (non-narrative), or culturally tailored comic book (narrative). Messages addressed sugary beverage consumption, industrial racialized marketing practices, and community action.MeasuresPre-post measures of empowerment including community control, perceived effectiveness of collective action, and perceived ability to influence community decisions.AnalysesANCOVA was used to evaluate intervention effects while controlling baseline scores.ResultsCulturally tailored infographics significantly increased empowerment-related perceptions (P = 0.022, d = 0.19) while non-tailored infographics did not (Experiment 1; P = 0.262). When comparing formats with cultural tailoring held constant (Experiment 2), infographics increased empowerment-related perceptions (P = 0.003, d = 0.20), while comic books did not (P = 0.380). Both culturally tailored formats significantly improved perceived effectiveness of collective action (P < 0.001). Community control increased only with the culturally tailored infographics (P = 0.003).ConclusionResults demonstrate that culturally tailored messages, particularly in non-narrative format, can empower members of minoritized communities to resist racialized marketing practices.

Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Health Belief Model, this study investigates how different message appeals (fear, self-benefit, other-benefit) and presentation formats (narrative, non-narrative) influence young adults’ Covid-19 protection intentions. We focus on two key mediators: perceived severity and instrumental attitudes. In a 3 (message appeal) × 2 (presentation format) between-subjects online experiment (N = 512; Germany, Jan 2022), participants were randomly assigned to view one of six explainer videos about Covid-19 protective measures. We assessed perceived severity, instrumental attitudes, and protection intentions. ANCOVAs and mediation analyses were conducted. No direct effects of message appeal or format on intentions were found. However, fear appeals significantly increased perceived severity, which in turn predicted stronger protection intentions. Moreover, a narrative presentation enhanced perceived severity and instrumental attitudes across all message types. Thus, fear appeals and narrative formats can be effective for targeting young adults. Longitudinal studies should examine the persistence of these effects and whether similar patterns emerge for other health threats.

Corrected by AI, Experts, or Strong Ties? Comparing the Effectiveness of AI and Human Agents in Health Misinformation Correction

AI agent in online content moderation including misinformation correction is becoming prevalent. Yet little is known about how AI compares with different types of human correctors, or whether specific corrective message formats amplify or undermine correction effectiveness. Integrating online opinion leadership theory and stereotype content model, this study investigates how correction source and format jointly influence misinformation correction outcomes. A 3 (correction source: AI-driven algorithm vs. medical expert vs. strong-tie individual) × 2 (correction format: numerical vs. narrative) between-subjects online experiment exposed initial misinformation believers (N = 576) to six different corrections. Results show that expert corrections outperform both AI and strong-tie corrections. Numerical corrections generally enhance credibility perception and sharing intention; however, a significant interaction reveals that narrative corrective messages are most persuasive when delivered by experts, whereas numerical corrective messages perform best for AI-based corrections. These findings advance theorization of AI as an emerging opinion leader and offer practical guidance for designing effective human–AI collaboration strategies in misinformation governance.

QEMU-Based 1553B Bus Simulation and Precise Timing Modeling Method

Deterministic, microsecond-level timing reproduction in full-system virtualization remains a key challenge for hardware-in-the-loop simulation of timing-sensitive communication buses. This paper presents a virtual time-driven approach that models protocol timing semantics as discrete events on a deterministic virtual timeline, and validates it using MIL-STD-1553B, a representative aerospace bus with strict microsecond-level requirements, as a case study. The MIL-STD-1553B data bus is widely used in aerospace and high-reliability embedded systems, where communication correctness depends not only on message formats but also critically on microsecond-level timing semantics such as message intervals, frame periods, response timeouts, and automatic retries. However, existing Quick Emulator (QEMU)-based virtualization solutions typically rely on host scheduling for timing, making it difficult to maintain determinism under varying loads, which may lead to missed detections or false alarms in timeout/retry behaviors. This paper implements a configurable BU-64843 device model supporting bus controller (BC), remote terminal (RT), and monitor terminal (MT) multi-role switching under a unified framework and completes behavioral modeling of both legacy and enhanced bus controllers covering message scheduling, execution, and exception handling paths. We propose a virtual time-driven precise timing modeling method that explicitly models key timing semantics as discrete events on a virtual timeline. Extensive experiments across 10 timing scenarios demonstrate that our method reduces timing deviation from an average of 8 µs to 65–124 ns (99.1% improvement), achieving deterministic simulation decoupled from host execution speed while meeting the 1 µs minimum resolution requirement. While demonstrated on 1553B, the virtual time-driven method is applicable to other timing-sensitive bus protocols in QEMU-based simulation environments, offering a low-cost, reproducible, and high-precision simulation environment for protocol compliance verification, driver development, and system integration.

Temporal Optimization of Dynamic Message Signs: A Survival Analysis of Driver Comprehension Factors

Dynamic Message Signs (DMSs) play a critical role in conveying real-time traffic information to drivers; however, their effectiveness heavily relies on how messages are structured and displayed, particularly regarding phasing duration and content length. This study examines the influence of these two factors on driver readability, comprehension, and gaze behavior using an advanced virtual reality (VR) driving simulator. Controlled experiments simulated four DMS scenarios, combining two phasing intervals (2.5 and 4 s) with short and long message formats, adhering to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) guidelines. The experiment integrated eye-tracking technology to measure fixation duration and frequency, while statistical methods, including survival analysis and LASSO regression, were employed to identify significant predictors of message readability. Results revealed that shorter messages with shorter phasing intervals led to the highest comprehension rates and reduced cognitive strain. Furthermore, individual characteristics such as gender, driving speed, and highway driving experience significantly affected how drivers engaged with DMS messages. These findings contribute to the development of more effective DMS deployment strategies and provide practical design recommendations to enhance traffic safety and information delivery on high-speed roadways.

Understanding YouTube influencers in Bangladesh: A content analysis of message strategies in sponsored vlogs

ABSTRACT This study examines sponsored advertising strategies used by YouTube influencers in Bangladesh through a quantitative content analysis of sponsored vlogs. Drawing on Taylor’s six-segment message strategy wheel, advertising appeals, and message formats, the study identifies a hybrid persuasion model with transmission and ritual approaches used nearly equally. Rational appeals drive comments, while problem-solving and sensory strategies increase views and likes. Interactive appeal also significantly enhances engagement. The findings extend Taylor’s framework by showing that message strategies can function as complementary components rather than mutually exclusive choices. The study provides empirical evidence from a non-Western digital context and contributes to discussions on parasocial interaction and persuasive storytelling in emerging economies.

Scalable and Interoperable C-V2X Framework for Real-time Intelligent Decision Support in Autonomous Mobility

While V2X-based vehicle communication and intersection management have been widely studied, most existing approaches remain limited to simulation-based environments or constrained testbeds. Furthermore, standardized message formats such as SAE J2735 lack the extensibility required to support emerging autonomous vehicle services, leading to inefficient or inflexible system implementations. To address these limitations, this study proposes a modular, edge-intelligent framework — The mobility Operating System (mOS) — integrated with a mixed-reality testbed for realistic validation of infrastructure-guided autonomous vehicle coordination. The proposed mOS supports plug-and-play integration of V2X communication modules, real-time intersection management algorithms, and bidirectional interaction between physical and virtual agents. Scenarios involving vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian interactions were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of mOS under realistic latency and behavioral uncertainty. Key performance metrics, including vehicle speed trajectory and communication latency, were used to measure the responsiveness and accuracy of coordination. Results confirm that the mOS successfully improves safety and behavioral predictability under complex intersection scenarios. This study demonstrates the feasibility of MR-integrated infrastructure intelligence and offers a scalable pathway for deploying AV coordination systems in next-generation innovative mobility ecosystems.&nbsp;

Influencers Virtuales en Instagram: Beneficios y Desafíos para las Marcas en la Era Digital

Virtual influencers, created through artificial intelligence and other technologies, are gaining popularity and offer new opportunities for brands. This study examines the highest-engagement posts of the top ten virtual influencers with the largest followings on the social network Instagram between July 2023 and July 2024, analyzing message formats and content on their accounts. The benefits these influencers can bring will be discussed, such as personalization, constant availability, and the reduction of risks associated with the public image of real people. However, challenges and negatives will also be addressed, including issues of authenticity, ethics, and potential disconnect with the public in the face of a lack of credibility or identification. This analysis aims to provide a balanced view of how virtual influencers can be integrated into brands' digital marketing strategies, highlighting both their advantages and limitations depending on the type of product or service, as well as the target audience.

Beyond-line-of-sight physical-layer chaos communication based on troposcatter.

We propose and demonstrate a scheme of beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) physical-layer chaos communication based on troposcatter. In this scheme, a physical-layer chaos synchronization induced by a common digital signal between parameter-matched semiconductor lasers, after optoelectronic conversion and resampling, is utilized to generate synchronous radio chaos locally. The radio chaos-encrypted message at the transmitter is propagated through troposcatter to the receiver for decryption. Results reveal that the transmission distance, signal-to-noise ratio, and multipath number in the troposcatter channel have a significant influence on the synchronization of the chaos carrier, which in turn affects the bit error rate (BER) of message decryption. A typical demonstration shows that BLOS chaotic secure transmission of a quadrature phase-shift keying message over a distance of 50 km and at a rate of 200 Mb/s can be achieved, with a BER below the hard-decision forward error correction threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. The distance and rate can be further extended, respectively, under troposcatter with superior path parameters and by employing higher-order message formats. Sensitivity analysis shows the system performances are sensitive to multipath delay spread while robust to Doppler shift frequency. This scheme is expected to pave the way for long-distance wireless chaos communication with physical-layer security.

Cross-national Internet discourse in the modern linguistic paradigm: terminological status, semantics, and the problem of legitimization

This article examines a distinct discursive practice encompassing a set of communicative practices that emerge and circulate at the intersection of different national contexts in the digital environment, terminologically defined as «cross-national internet discourse». The aim of the work is to justify the validity of distinguishing this type of discourse and to identify its features based on the general taxonomy of discourse in domestic and foreign literature. The research materials include works by Russian, Chinese, and European linguists dedicated to studying the concept and classification of internet discourse in general and its cross-national variety in particular. Descriptive and comparative methods, as well as observation and theoretical analysis, were employed. It is established that within the scientific community, internet discourse is most often viewed as a new form of communication, classified by genre, topic, message format, and communication channel, with texts containing a cross-national context typically categorized as political internet discourse. The necessity of distinguishing cross-national internet discourse as a variety of modern discourse is justified on the grounds that this type of discourse actively constructs transnational public spheres, influences international relations, shapes collective identities, and redefines the boundaries of cultural influence. The specific features distinguishing this type of discourse from others are systematized. The categorical parameters include: a) a specific nature of communication participants; b) a special chronotope; c) a unique goal; d) a specific set of strategies; e) a distinct thematic focus; f) genre variability; g) linguistic features. The obtained data contribute to expanding the understanding of internet discourse, particularly its cross-national variety, and create a foundation for further study of its characteristics, including from the perspective of the linguistic devices employed within it.

The role of social media message design and audience demographics in promoting sunscreen use to prevent skin cancer: An online randomized controlled experiment

ObjectivesSkin cancer represents a significant public health concern, and consistent sunscreen use reduces risk. With social media emerging as a dominant source of health information, unconventional video formats have gained increased prominence. Despite these shifts in health promotion practice, limited research has examined how digital message formats influence health-related beliefs. The objective of this study is to examine how different social media-based message formats (amateur video, professional video, written text, and control) and participant characteristics affect perceptions of skin cancer risk, sunscreen efficacy, and intentions to wear sunscreen to prevent skin cancer.MethodsA national sample of white US adults (N = 538) were assigned to one of four digital message conditions in an online randomized controlled experiment. Participants completed a fully automated Qualtrics-based survey grounded in the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM). EPPM variables, audience perceptions of the message, confidence in identifying signs of skin cancer, and behavioral intentions to wear sunscreen were evaluated through a series of one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs). Standard multiple regression analysis was used to assess associations between message assignment, demographic characteristics, and EPPM variables.ResultsBoth amateur and professionally produced video formats significantly increased participants’ beliefs in sunscreen's effectiveness compared to the control condition. The only significant audience perception differences were higher engagement and lower boredom ratings in the professional video condition compared to the amateur video and text-only conditions. Demographic variables including sex, generation, skin sensitivity, and education were significantly associated with differences in perceived threat and efficacy.ConclusionFindings indicate that both amateur and professional video-based social media messages can effectively promote sun safety. Public health campaigns aiming to reduce skin cancer risk may be strengthened by incorporating varied digital message formats and tailoring content to key demographic characteristics of the target audience.

Conditions for Managing Social Communication by Sports Clubs

Sport has long been a prominent element of social life, carrying educational, ethical, economic and health-related functions, and shaping lifestyles, fashion and cultural norms. Within this field, sports marketing relies on communication tools directed at key stakeholder groups – fans, sponsors, media and local authorities – in order to build the image of clubs and players, convey positive information and support high attendance as well as a favourable atmosphere during competitions. The present article reports an empirical study of communication structures in top-tier Polish football clubs, focusing on the role of press officers as central actors in club–stakeholder relations. Using a 38-item semi-structured online questionnaire, data were collected from press officers of all 15 Ekstraklasa clubs between August 2023 and February 2024, and analysed with descriptive statistics and logical reasoning. The study examined how organisational and technological arrangements within communication departments relate to the perceived effectiveness of contact with external audiences.The results indicate that dedicated fan-service points, proactive dialogue on social media, and systematic cross-department coordination are jointly associated with a substantial share of the variance in self-reported quality of service, pointing to the need for continuous adaptation of strategies, methods, and communication techniques. The findings underline that enhancing and regularly updating the content and formats of messages addressed to stakeholders is a key route to improving service quality and strengthening the club’s image. Consequently, a thorough understanding of the principles of effective communication, as well as of the specific tools shaping itscourse in contemporary media environments, emerges as a necessary condition for the professional functioning of football clubs at the highest level of competition.

Problems of information support for state youth policy in youth assessments

The relevance it is determined by the need to form adequate representations of state policy practices in relation to young people and the insufficient effectiveness of media support for youth projects and programs. The purpose it is to diagnose the specifics of young people's representations regarding the information component of the state youth policy system. Objectives : to establish the current level of awareness of young people about the practices of state youth policy; to determine whether or not they are interested in receiving information about youth projects and programs; to analyze preferred sources of information about initiatives of state youth policy; to diagnose the most convenient formats of information messages; to study young people's ideas about promising areas for improving the media component of the state youth policy system. politics. Methodology. The empirical basis of the work was formed by the data obtained during the author's sociological research conducted in the Kursk region in 2024 by the method of focus group interviews. The respondents were young people aged from 15 to 26: students of general education institutions, students of higher education institutions, working youth. Results. Consist in the fact that the current system of information support for youth projects and programs is not quite optimal. This situation is determined, firstly, by the fact that most of the specialists working with young people do not have specialized education, and they also do not have the necessary competencies to organize effective media support for youth initiatives. Secondly, the barrier is the attitudes of young people themselves, who lack trust in the authorities and do not believe that their media resources can meet their information needs and interests. Conclusions. In our opinion, when organizing media support for youth projects and programs, it is necessary to take into account the following circumstances: to develop a differentiated network of media resources, use hybrid interaction models, take into account the cognitive characteristics of modern youth, and improve the professional development system for staff working with youth.

Content commodification has become a dominant phenomenon within Indonesia’s digital ecosystem, where communication messages are no longer oriented toward use value such as education and enlightenment, but toward exchange value determined by algorithms, virality, and monetization potential. This transformation is evident in the behavior of content creators, online media, politicians, and government institutions that adjust their message formats to align with the logic of platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Political content during the 2024 Election, clickbait practices in online journalism, and the aestheticization of public campaigns such as Bangga Buatan Indonesia(BBI) and Gerakan Kamis Pakai Lokal (GASPOL) demonstrate that content today is produced primarily to capture attention rather than to strengthen social literacy. Using a constructivist paradigm and a descriptive qualitative approach, this study analyzes how exchange value dominates meaning-making processes in digital spaces. Through the lenses of media political economy, cultural industries, and surveillance capitalism, the study shows that content commodification shifts the function of communication from a deliberative public sphere to a commercial arena governed by algorithms. These findings highlight the urgent need for digital literacy and communication ethics to safeguard the social role of media in Indonesia.

Breaking the vape-stress cycle: communicating mental health risks of vaping to mitigate reactance.

Despite concerns that e-cigarettes worsen mental health symptoms, the tobacco industry markets them as stress-relief tools. In response, anti-vaping campaigns have integrated mental health cues into their messaging; yet, their effectiveness remains unclear. This study examines how mental health cues in anti-vaping messages influence young adults' perceived threat to freedom, attitudes, and intentions to quit vaping, and how these effects vary by message format. Using an experiment with daily vapers (N=436), participants were assigned to one of five conditions: 2 (mental health cue: yes vs. no)×2 (message format: narrative vs. non-narrative)+control. Mental health cues alone did not significantly impact perceived threat to freedom, attitudes, or intentions to quit vaping. However, interaction effects revealed a nuanced role of message format. In a narrative format, mental health cues reduced perceived threat to freedom, whereas in a non-narrative format, these cues heightened threat perceptions. Further analyses showed that while reduced threat in narrative led to more positive attitudes toward quitting, it did not translate into stronger behavioral intentions. Findings highlight the complexity of using mental health cues in anti-vaping campaigns and the need to address reactance challenges in message design.

A Framework Designed with Perceptual Symmetry and Interactive Asymmetry for XR Collaboration

Collaborative experiences are enriched through cross-platform interactions in the context of eXtended Reality (XR) systems. In this paper, we introduce SRVS-C (Spatially Referenced Virtual Synchronization for Collaboration), a centralized framework designed to support co-located, real-time AR (on smartphone) and VR (in headset) interactions over local networks. The framework adopts an architecture of interactive asymmetry, where the interaction roles, input modalities, and rendering responsibilities are adapted to the unique capabilities and constraints of each device. Concurrently, the framework maintains perceptual symmetry, guaranteeing a coherent spatial and semantic experience for all users. This is achieved through anchor-based spatial registration and unified data representations. Compared to prior work that relies on cloud services or symmetric platforms (e.g., VR–VR, AR–AR, and PC–PC pairings), SRVS-C supports seamless communication between AR and VR endpoints, operating entirely over TCP sockets using serialization-agnostic message formats. We evaluated SRVS-C in a dual-user scenario involving a mobile AR and a VR headset, using shared freehand drawing tasks. These tasks include simple linear strokes and geometry-rich drawing content to assess how varying interaction complexity—ranging from low-density sketches to intricate, high-vertex structures— impacted the end-to-end latency, state replication timing, and collaborative fluency. The results show that the system sustains latency between 35 ms and 175 ms, even during rapid, continuous drawing actions that generate a high number of stroke updates per second, and when handling drawings composed of numerous vertices and complex shapes. Throughout these conditions, the system maintains perceptual continuity and spatial alignment across users by applying platform-specific interactive asymmetry.
