From data extraction to analysis: a comparative study of ELISE capabilities in scientific literature

The exponential growth of scientific literature presents challenges for pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and Medtech industries, particularly in regulatory documentation, clinical research, and systematic reviews. Ensuring accurate data extraction, literature synthesis, and compliance with industry standards require AI tools that not only streamline workflows but also uphold scientific rigor. This study evaluates the performance of AI tools designed for bibliographic review, data extraction, and scientific synthesis, assessing their impact on decision-making, regulatory compliance, and research productivity. The AI tools assessed include general-purpose models like ChatGPT and specialized solutions such as ELISE (Elevated LIfe SciencEs), SciSpace/Typeset, Humata, and Epsilon. The evaluation is based on three main criteria: Extraction, Comprehension, and Analysis with Compliance and Traceability (ECACT) as additional dimensions. Human experts established reference benchmarks, while AI Evaluator models ensure objective performance measurement. The study introduces the ECACT score, a structured metric assessing AI reliability in scientific literature analysis, regulatory reporting and clinical documentation. Results demonstrate that ELISE consistently outperforms other AI tools, excelling in precise data extraction, deep contextual comprehension, and advanced content analysis. ELISE’s ability to generate traceable, well-reasoned insights makes it particularly well-suited for high-stakes applications such as regulatory affairs, clinical trials, and medical documentation, where accuracy, transparency, and compliance are paramount. Unlike other AI tools, ELISE provides expert-level reasoning and explainability, ensuring AI-generated insights align with industry best practices. ChatGPT is efficient in data retrieval but lacks precision in complex analysis, limiting its use in high-stakes decision-making. Epsilon, Humata, and SciSpace/Typeset exhibit moderate performance, with variability affecting their reliability in critical applications. In conclusion, while AI tools such as ELISE enhance literature review, regulatory writing, and clinical data interpretation, human oversight remains essential to validate AI outputs and ensure compliance with scientific and regulatory standards. For pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and Medtech industries, AI integration must strike a balance between automation and expert supervision to maintain data integrity, transparency, and regulatory adherence.

Strategies for Coronary Artery Disease Prevention at Ayub Teaching Hospital: Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Directions

CAD is still a pressing global health issue and a leading cause of mortality and morbidity; its incidence is increasingly observed in developing countries, including Pakistan. The paper aims to explore the CAD prevention plan within ATH, analyzing its successes and failures, barriers, and positives, and future planning to reduce this disease. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted to collect data from CAD patients, high-risk individuals, and healthcare providers regarding awareness, preventive practices, medication compliance, and perceived barriers to CAD prevention. The findings show that there is low awareness of CAD, particularly among high-risk groups, failure to follow necessary lifestyle changes, and issues around medication use. Lack of financial resources, low levels of health literacy, and the overall shortage of primary healthcare facilities were identified as the primary challenges affecting prevention. Lack of patient compliance, shortage of resources, and a heavy workload were attributed by most healthcare providers as some of their major challenges in CAD management. However, increased interest was prevalent in community-based prevention programs, telemedicine, and low-cost healthcare services, which point to potential obstacles. Thus, the development of an effective system to fight CAD requires a multi-faceted approach based on the organization of special targeted public health programs, increasing accessibility in healthcare, and utilizing information technologies. Improving primary health care, employing preventive cardiology, and reforming policies will reduce CAD rates in Pakistan in significant ways. The findings of this research are valuable to guide future activities to improve CAD prevention at ATH and to establish national-level policies for cardiovascular disease prevention.

Relationship Between Depression and Medication Adherence in Older Patients With Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Depression and cardiovascular disease (CVD) by the end of 2030 will be among the major causes of disability worldwide. Meanwhile, medication adherence is an important factor in predicting clinical outcomes in patients with CVD. Further, lack of medication compliance is affected by depression. Thus, this study aimed to explore the relationship between depression and medication adherence among older patients with CVD. The search was done across eight databases of PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Embase, Scopus, APA Psycinfo, CINAHL/ebsco, ProQuest, and Web of Science. For the selection of included studies, there were no constraints regarding publication language. All studies available in each of the databases were searched up to December 9, 2021. Risk of bias assessment was done based on the Joanna Briggs Institute scale. The final result was estimated using a random effects model. The data were analyzed by CMA 2 software. Seven studies and 10,153 elderly suffering from CVD were identified. Most included studies had reported an inverse association between depression and medication adherence. There was a small effect between depression and medication adherence among these older patients (combined odds ratio 0.603, 95% confidence interval 0.252-1.442). Thus, having depression would reduce medication adherence by 40%. Depression has a considerable effect on medication adherence among older patients with CVD. Thus, it is suggested that considering the importance of depression and lack of medication adherence in increasing the negative outcomes of this disease in these patients, primary studies be conducted in this regard to achieve conclusive results in subsequent systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

The effects of high fat diet consumption on morphine-induced constipation.

Opioids, prescribed for pain relief or as maintenance therapies for opioid use disorder, induce constipation, which can lead to medication compliance issues. However, it is not known how dietary manipulation might impact opioid-induced constipation. To test the hypothesis that eating a high fat diet exacerbates opioid-induced constipation, male and female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 8/diet/sex) were fed either a low fat (standard) diet, a high fat/high carbohydrate diet, or a ketogenic diet. Rats were injected with either saline or morphine (1-10 mg/kg) and constipation was measured by counting fecal boli hourly for 6 h. Morphine-induced comparable constipation in all groups; however, rats eating a high fat/high carbohydrate or ketogenic diet produced significantly less feces following injections of saline or morphine as compared to rats eating a standard diet (P < 0.05). Dietary considerations might be important for patients prescribed opioid medications.

Effectiveness of inbuilt cell phone reminders in chronic medication compliance.

Adherence to chronic medication is crucial for managing chronic diseases and preventing complications. However, maintaining consistent adherence remains challenging, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where forgetfulness is a common barrier. The widespread use of mobile phones, even in resource-limited settings, offers a practical opportunity to leverage inbuilt reminder features to support medication adherence. This study evaluates the effectiveness of inbuilt cell phone reminders in enhancing chronic medication compliance among patients in the eThekwini health district of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. In this prospective, cross-sectional study, 400 patients on chronic medications were systematically selected from five healthcare centres. Participants were divided into two groups: those using mobile phone reminders (Group 1) and those who did not (Group 2). Medication adherence was assessed using a standardised questionnaire, and statistical analyses, including Chi-square tests and logistic regression, were conducted to identify differences in adherence rates. Group 1 exhibited significantly higher adherence rates (87%) compared to Group 2 (67%,p 0.001). The use of cell phone reminders was associated with a 2.5-fold increase in the odds of adherence (odds ratio [OR] = 2.5, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.7-3.6,p 0.001). Inbuilt cell phone reminders are a cost-effective intervention that significantly enhances medication adherence, especially in resource-limited settings. Integrating mobile technologies into public health strategies could improve chronic disease management.Contribution:This study highlights the potential of mobile phone reminders as a practical tool for improving medication adherence, with significant implications for public health strategies in low-resource settings.

Determination of 59 Psychotropic Drugs, Including Antipsychotics, Antidepressants, Antiepileptics, Anti-Alcohol Abuse Drugs, Anti-ADHD Drugs, and Their Metabolites in Urine Using LC-MS/MS for Medication Compliance Monitoring.

Increasing social concern regarding individuals with mental health disorders in the criminal justice system has underscored the need for effective strategies to reduce recidivism. Medication compliance monitoring is a critical approach that ensures adherence to prescribed treatments, facilitating the reintegration of these individuals into society. This study focuses on the development and validation of a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for detecting 59 psychotropic drugs and their metabolites in urine, addressing a significant gap in existing monitoring techniques. Utilizing a dilute-and-shoot approach for urine sample preparation, we established a robust analytical method that demonstrated high sensitivity and precision, with limits of detection ranging from 0.07 to 1.5 ng/mL and correlation coefficients consistently above 0.997. The method was validated through various parameters, including selectivity, stability, and accuracy, ensuring reliable performance in forensic applications. Analysis of urine samples from 248 individuals on probation with mental health conditions confirmed the practicality of the method, identifying 53 psychotropic substances. The LC-MS/MS method was successfully applied for medication compliance monitoring of mentally disordered probationers. Therefore, this analytical method could provide clear evidence for preventing the recurrence of mentally disordered crimes.

A Bibliometric Study of 3D Printing In Pharmaceutical Technology For Tablet Dosage Form

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is the process of producing 3D items layer by layer using computer-generated designs. 3DP has been utilized to manufacture numerous drug dosage forms. The goal of 3D printing products is to create personalized medicine so it can enhance medication compliance and obtain better treatment outcomes. There are a lot of publications about fabricated tablets using 3DP. However, the results of analyses based on previous research in this field are lower. We conducted a bibliometric study using RStudio and VOSviewer software to summarize tabletting using 3DP research from 2014-2024. This study was based on the Scopus Database, and 405 suitable publications were evaluated. The most productive authors are Basit, A.W, Goyanes, A., and Gaisford, S., from the Department of Pharmaceutics, UCL School of Pharmacy, University College London, United Kingdom. Its affiliations and its country are also ranked the highest in producing articles in this field. In the future, 3DP will be an attractive alternative for tablet printing. Pharmacists in hospitals and drugstores can produce personalized tablets to improve treatment outcomes.

RISK FACTORS FOR RECURRENT HOSPITALIZATION INPATIENTS WITH HEART FAILURE WITH REDUCEDEJECTION FRACTION

Background: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is a progressive condition contributing to substantial healthcare burden due to frequent hospital readmissions. Timely identification of associated risk factors is essential for reducing recurrence, improving quality of life, and optimizing hospital resource utilization, especially in low-resource settings. Preventable causes of decompensation continue to challenge post-discharge management strategies in heart failure care. Objective: To determine the frequency and impact of various risk factors associated with hospital readmissions among patients with HFrEF admitted to Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted over six months in the Department of Cardiology, Lady Reading Hospital. A total of 122 patients aged 20–80 years with documented HFrEF (EF < 50%) and a history of prior hospitalization for heart failure were enrolled using non-probability consecutive sampling. Data were gathered through structured interviews, clinical examination, and review of medical records. Risk factors assessed included poor drug compliance, NSAID and steroid use, uncontrolled blood pressure, infections, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, thyroid dysfunction, anemia, hyperglycemia, and electrolyte abnormalities. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25, with chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests applied. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Out of 122 patients, 49 (40.2%) experienced unplanned readmission. Among them, 61.2% had poor medication compliance, 53.1% had uncontrolled blood pressure, 40.8% presented with infections, and 36.7% had arrhythmias. Electrolyte disturbances (44.9%), anemia (38.8%), and hyperglycemia (32.7%) were also significantly associated (p < 0.05). Readmitted patients had a mean ejection fraction of 28.7% ± 5.4%, significantly lower than 35.1% ± 7.6% in non-readmitted patients (p < 0.001). Low socioeconomic status was significantly linked with readmissions (p = 0.036). Conclusion: Recurrent hospitalizations in HFrEF are largely driven by modifiable clinical and behavioral factors. Targeted interventions, including medication adherence reinforcement, blood pressure control, infection management, and socioeconomic support, are critical to improving outcomes and minimizing preventable readmissions.

Hubungan Kepatuhan Minum Obat dengan Kejadian Cacat kusta di Puskesmas Batumarmar Pamekasan

Morbus Hansen, or leprosy, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. There are two types of leprosy, namely MB (Multi Bacillary) and PB (Pauci Bacillary). According to the WHO, the level of disability due to leprosy is divided into three levels: Level 0, Level 1, and Level 3. This study is an analytic observational study using a cross-sectional research design, involving 45 respondents selected through total sampling technique. Data collection was carried out by filling out a questionnaire consisting of questions regarding leprosy medication compliance. Data analysis used the chi-square test and prevalence rate. The results showed no association between medication compliance (p=0.092, PR=2.0) and the incidence of leprosy disability at the Batumarmar Health Center, Pamekasan Regency. The conclusion of this study indicates that although theoretically adherence to medication can lead to disability in leprosy patients, the results of this study show something different. The difference between the results of this study and the theory may be due to other factors affecting disability. The suggestion is that the health center is expected to improve the monitoring system to evaluate patient compliance with treatment. Support from medical personnel and families is also needed to encourage patients to be more consistent in undergoing therapy.

Hyperphosphatemia Control: A Quality Improvement Initiative for Adult End-Stage Renal Disease Patients on Hemodialysis.

Background: Hyperphosphatemia is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients on hemodialysis. However, despite efforts to control hyperphosphatemia, it remains a prevalent issue among adult patients on maintenance hemodialysis worldwide. Objectives: An intensive multidisciplinary educational program focusing on diet control and medication compliance was developed to lower the incidence rate of hyperphosphatemia and serum phosphorus levels among adult patients on hemodialysis and to improve their understanding of hyperphosphatemia control. The objectives were to decrease the incidence rate of hyperphosphatemia and the mean phosphorus level among participants by 10% and to improve their knowledge assessment scores by 30% within 3 months. Methods: The education program was implemented at a hemodialysis clinic serving adult end-stage renal disease patients. Education was delivered via videos, pamphlets, and bimonthly one-on-one follow-up sessions. The incidence rate of hyperphosphatemia, mean serum phosphorus levels, and knowledge assessment scores were measured before and after the intervention. Descriptive and comparison statistics were used in data analysis. Results: Following the intervention, the incidence rate of hyperphosphatemia decreased by 45% within the intervention group and by 18% across the entire dialysis clinic. The mean serum phosphorus level within the intervention group decreased by 16% after intervention (p = .007). Additionally, the intervention group showed a statistically significant improvement in knowledge assessment test scores (p = .018). Conclusion: The intensive multidisciplinary education program effectively educated patients with hyperphosphatemia about phosphorus control, reduced the incidence rate of hyperphosphatemia, and helped lower serum phosphorus levels to within a normal range. Implications for Nursing Practice: Advanced practice registered nurses can play an important role in improving patient outcomes and management of hyperphosphatemia.

CASE REPORT: PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by distortion of reality, disorganization, and psychomotor poverty. Schizophrenia is characterized by positive symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, bizarre behavior and thought disorders and negative symptoms such as flat or blunted affect, alogia, anhedonia and deficits in social interaction. Schizophrenia disorders persist for at least six months and there must be at least one month of symptoms. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1% of the world's population. Although schizophrenia treatment can improve symptoms, it cannot restore normal function in most patients. Treatments that can be given to schizophrenia sufferers such as oral antipsychotics, especially second-generation such as risperidone, olanzapine, aripiprazole are recommended for initial treatment of acute psychosis. Case illustration is a 27-year-old male patient with complaints of hearing voices that cannot be heard by others and making it difficult for the patient to sleep. Management of this patient was given quetiapine 2x400 mg and lorazepam 1x1 mg. The result of this patient's management is an improvement in clinical symptoms. The conclusion of this case report is that paranoid schizophrenia is a case that is easy to relapse and can even become chronic, so it is necessary to do the importance of medication compliance, appropriate social support in order to improve social function in patients.

Removing Student Access Barriers: An Intervention to Reduce Medical Exclusion for Students Without Physical Examinations.

High school freshman students without documentation of physical examinations and/or vaccination are excluded from school by state-mandated health requirements. With social determinants impacting student medical compliance, school nurses lack evidence-based interventions to reduce medical exclusion. This quality improvement project aims to reduce medical exclusion at the project site by 25% from the previous year by focusing on meeting the freshman physical examination requirement. A three-pronged PDSA cycle evaluates each program intervention [resource guides, phone calls, temporary health clinic] in reducing medical exclusion. After the distribution of two resource guides, 93 personalized phone calls were made to families with missing health documentation. On the first day of school, 28 freshmen remained out of medical compliance. The temporary on-site health clinic provided physical examinations to 13 of the 28 students.
