Evaluation of Preschool Screening Program in the Kingdom of Bahrain: A Survey in Primary Healthcare Centers

Background: Preschool screening is one of the services provided by primary healthcare centers, in the Kingdom of Bahrain, for children aged 5 to 6 years. This service includes assessing growth and development parameters, which includes measuring hemoglobin levels, conducting vision examinations, and administering Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) tests. Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of anemia, reduced visual acuity, and positive PPD tests, in children’s preschool screening. Methodology: This survey was conducted in 25 primary healthcare centers, between the period of January to March 2020, with a total sample size of 2,637 children. Electronic preschool screening visit sheets, of children who attended the health centers for screening, were reviewed and evaluated. Results: Out of the 2,637 records reviewed; anemia, reduced visual acuity, and positive PPD tests, were found in 19.9%, 4.7%, and 0.45% of children, respectively. Conclusion: The overall prevalence of reduced visual acuity and positive PPD tests was low. On the other hand, although the overall prevalence of anemia was also low, at about 20%, this can be reduced further by raising physicians’ adherence to anemia management guidelines, at earlier ages. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN KNOWLEDGE, NUTRITIONAL ADEQUACY LEVEL, TEA DRINKING HABITS AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS WITH ANEMIA AMONG ADOLESCENT GIRLS IN SMK PRATAMA MULYA KARAWANG

Introduction: Adolescent is a nation’s future asset that is prone to nutritional problems. One of the nutritional problem in adolescent is anemia. Anemia is a condition when the hemoglobin level is below normal limits. Currenty, anemia among adolescent is still a health problem both globally and in Indonesia. Anemia has a negative impact on adolescents, including reducing concentration in learning, reducing work productivity, and disrupting the body’s defense system. Furthermore, anemia is one of the indirect factors that cause maternal death. The prevalence of anemia among adolescent in Karawang Regency, especially at SMK Pratama Mulya Karawang is still quite high (53,3%), so it is necessary to do further research on the factors that influence the incidence of anemia among adolescent girls. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge, nutritional adequacy level, tea drinking habits, and nutritional status with incidence of adolescent girls anemia in SMK Pratama Mulya Karawang.
 Method: This study use a quantitative observational research with a cross sectional design. The minimum number of samples in this study was 65 people. Anemia data was collected using biochemical measurements of hemoglobin levels, knowledge data using a knowledge questionnare, nutritional intake data and tea drinking habits were carried out by interviewing using the SQ-FFQ form, while nutritional status data was measured by anthropometric measurements.
 Results: The results showed that there was a significant relationship between energy adequacy levels, protein adequacy levels, iron adequacy levels, and vitamin C adequacy levels with the incidence of anemia and there was no significant relationship between knowledge, vitamin B12 adequacy levels, tea drinking habits and nutritional status with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls.

Anemia and The Level of IL-6 in Children Infected with Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia

The relation between anemia and inflammatory immune response has lately had much attention. This research was conducted from October 2018 until April 2019, including (110) children below 12 years from both gender in some Hospitals, Primary Health care centers, Public Primary Schools and Kindergarten in Baghdad, Iraq. The objective of this study is to determine the possible correlation between iron deficiency anemia and inflammatory immune response among children infected with Entamoeba histolytica or Giardia lamblia. Blood samples were taken from all groups to measure hemoglobin level, serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), while the inflammatory related immune response was evaluated by measuring IL-6 and ferritin. Student T-Test was used to compare between means. The results showed that both hemoglobin and iron concentrations were significantly (P) ˂ 0.01 lower in infected children compared with control, as well as both IL-6 and ferritin levels were significant where (P) ˂0.05 amplified among infected children compared to control. Microcytic hypochromic anemia was observed in the majority of infected children, while normocytic normochromic RBCs was recorded in the majority of control children.

The effect of digital nerve block on the accuracy of hemoglobin monitoring during surgery: A randomized clinical trial

Background: The decision to transfuse blood products to patients during surgery is critical, due to the potential complications and costs of transfusion. Measuring hemoglobin level by spectrophotometry (SpHb) plays an important role in making this decision. The accuracy of SpHb depends on the finger perfusion. Since digital nerve blocks (DNB) can enhance blood circulation, we aimed at investigating DNB effects on the accuracy of SpHb. Methods: Patients undergoing spine surgery were randomly assigned to two groups. Group A received DNB in the left hand, and group B received DNB in the right hand. In each group, the other hand was considered as the control. Rainbow adult ReSposable sensors were attached to the patients’ both hands. Before surgical incision and every 1.5 hours, the SpHb values of both hands and the perfusion index were recorded. Concomitantly, arterial blood samples were drawn and sent to the lab for hemoglobin concentration measurement. This served as the gold standard for assessing hemoglobin levels (labHb). We used a mixed-effects generalized linear model to test the effect of independent variables on the difference between SpHb and labHb at each time point. Results: The SpHb displayed higher hemoglobin levels than those assessed by the lab. For lower labHb values, the SpHb-labHb differences were larger. A one-unit decrease in labHb increased the difference between SpHb and labHb by 0.56 g dL -1 , which was statistically significant. DNB significantly increased the difference between SpHb and labHb by 0.42 g dL -1 . The effect of DNB on the difference between SpHb and labHb was significant up to three hours after the beginning of surgery (0.58 g dL -1 difference between blocked and non-blocked hands). Conclusion: This study shows that, when hemoglobin levels are low, the accuracy of spectrophotometry decreases. Although DNB increases finger perfusion, it leads to an overestimation of hemoglobin levels by SpHb.

Hemoglobin Levels in Blood Samples

Hemoglobin is a part of erythrocytes that serves to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide in tissues. Hemoglobin levels in the blood may decrease one of which is influenced by exposure to lead from the environment. Places that are at high risk for exposure to air lead one of them is at gas stations (Public Refueling Stations). The purpose of this study is to determine hemoglobin levels in kedungrandu gas station officers, Kec. Patikraja, Banyumas. This type of research is a non-experimental observational study. The method of measuring hemoglobin levels using strip test in the form of POCT (Point Care of Testing) tool. This method uses capillary blood samples from 20 respondents with criteria of male sex and aged 21-60 years. The result of this study was as many as 6 people (30%) of the total respondents had low hemoglobin levels, while 14 people (70%) have normal hemoglobin levels. The average hemoglobin level in the blood sample of kedungrandu gas station officers, Kec. Patikraja, Banyumas is 14.41 mg/dl or normal.

Public Health Crisis in India: Prevalence of Anemia in Three Villages

IntroductionAnemia, including Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA), is a prevalent public health crisis around the world. In IDA, red blood cells are unable to oxygenate tissues in the body due to the lack of essential iron. India has had a particularly high consistent prevalence of IDA since the National Family Health Survey began in 1991. Other forms of anemia can arise due to a lack of vitamin B12, folic acid, and other micronutrients that make up hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying in red blood molecules.The villages of Dhank, Kolki, and Bhimora in the state of Gujarat, India have not been focused on in great depth for the prevalence and severity of anemia. Researchers sought to understand the prevalence of anemia in rural areas from a public health standpoint. Understanding the prevalence of anemia in specific regions in India is imperative to identifying where to focus therapies that target iron deficiency and other causes of anemia, such as through the administration of iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C, and deworming medications.Methods and MaterialsBlood samples were taken to measure hemoglobin levels (g/dl) utilizing the glucometer device from two samples: boys and girls ages 0-18, and women ages 18-45 in the villages of Dhank, Kolki, and Bhimora villages in the state of Gujarat. Sample sizes were n=17,111 children and n=9,151 women.Researchers at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine teamed up with the public health research team to statistically analyze hemoglobin level data, understanding prevalence of anemia in in the three villages. Researchers calculated the prevalence of anemia in both groups based on World Health Organization (WHO) criteria.ResultsThe results show levels of moderate and severe anemia within the states of Kolki, Bhimora, and Dhank for children aged 0-18 and women aged 18-45. In the children group, the highest level of “moderate” to “severe anemia” was in Bhimora. The lowest level of “severe anemia” and highest level of “no anemia” were in Kolki. Similar results were seen in the women's group. In the women's group, the highest level of “moderate” and “severe anemia” were in Bhimora. The lowest level of “severe anemia” and highest level of “no anemia” were in Kolki.ConclusionAnemia is a serious public health crisis within the state of Gujarat, specifically in the villages of Kolki, Bhimora, and Dhank for children 0-18 and women 18-45, as indicated by the high prevalence of moderate and severe anemia in these areas. These findings call for interventions to combat this public health issue. Future study of the data will show which specific socioeconomic factors (caste, class, working status, etc.) are associated with lower hemoglobin levels. These future studies, in turn, will guide the targeted deployment of iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C, and deworming tablets along with extensive educational intervention. Prevalence of Left Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction by Tissue Doppler Imaging in Patients with End Stage Renal Disease undergoing Regular Dialysis with Preserved Systolic Function

Abstract Background Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is the principal myocardial alteration in patients with ESRD due to multiple preload and afterload factors related to hemodialysis leading to left ventricular diastolic dysfunction manifested by signs and symptoms of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The use of echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging is essential to detect diastolic dysfunction in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis as the prevalence of diagnosing HFpEF in ESRD patients is under-estimated. Objective To evaluate the possible impact of renal replacement therapy in the form of regular dialysis provided to end stage renal disease patients on left ventricular diastolic function by implementing tissue doppler imaging. Patients and Methods The study included 100 ESRD patients on regular dialysis presenting to the dialysis unit in Ain Shams University Hospitals. The inclusion criterion was end stage renal disease patients with GFR < 15 ml/min/1.73 m2 on regular dialysis for more than 6 months. Excluded patients were those above than 80 yrs old, with hemodynamic instability, arrhythmias, valvular diseases, ischemic conditions, and LV systolic dysfunction. After the hemodialysis session, ECG gated echocardiography was done applying pulsed wave Doppler on mitral valve to detect E/A ratio, continuous wave Doppler on tricuspid valve to calculate TR vmax, and tissue Doppler on lateral mitral annulus to detect e’ and E/e’ ratio. Moreover, left atrial volume index (LAVI) and other standard echocardiographic parameters were measured. Full history and clinical examination including ECG recording was done and blood samples were taken to measure hemoglobin levels. Patients were then stratified according to their diastolic dysfunction grading. Results Seventy eight percent (78%) of the patients showed diastolic dysfunction including 46 % showed grade I diastolic dysfunction, 26 % showed grade II diastolic dysfunction and 6% showed grade III diastolic dysfunction. Hemoglobin levels showed significant negative correlation with E, E/A, E/E’, LAVI and TR Vmax (r = -0.25, -0.37, -0.29, -0.23 and -0.31 with p 0.012, <0 .001, < 0.003, 0.002 & <0 .001 respectively). Multiple regression analysis revealed smoking, DM, Hb, LVPWd, EF, E/A, LAVI and TR Vmax presented the important determinants of diastolic filling (β = -0.16, 0.15, -0.20, -0.27, -0.25, 0.16, 0.39 & 0.27 and p = 0.002, 0.045, < 0.001, 0.022, < 0.001, 0.039, < 0.001 & < 0.001 respectively). Comparing E/A ratio with E/e’ ratio sensitivities revealed E/A ratio was 28.2% while E/e’ ratio was 74.3%. This was statistically significant showing a difference between the two modalities (χ2 = 33.2526 and p = < 0 .0001). Conclusion In ESRD patients, maladaptive events leading to LVH and diastolic dysfunction occur frequently. Thus, early identification and treatment of factors involved in order to prevent this devastating process. Now it seems that TDI and E, E/A and E/E’ parameters are good instruments for the early detection of LVH and diastolic dysfunction as they are important risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in CKD. In comparison with the conventional Doppler techniques, tissue Doppler is a vital tool in diagnosing diastolic dysfunction.

Routinely collected antenatal data for longitudinal prediction of preeclampsia in nulliparous women: a population-based study

The objective was to evaluate the sequentially updated predictive capacity for preeclampsia during pregnancy, using multivariable longitudinal models including data from antenatal care. This population-based cohort study in the Stockholm-Gotland Counties, Sweden, included 58,899 pregnancies of nulliparous women 2008–2013. Prospectively collected data from each antenatal care visit was used, including maternal characteristics, reproductive and medical history, and repeated measurements of blood pressure, weight, symphysis-fundal height, proteinuria, hemoglobin and blood glucose levels. We used a shared-effects joint longitudinal model including all available information up until a given gestational length (week 24, 28, 32, 34 and 36), to update preeclampsia prediction sequentially. Outcome measures were prediction of preeclampsia, preeclampsia with delivery < 37, and preeclampsia with delivery ≥ 37 weeks’ gestation. The area under the curve (AUC) increased with gestational length. AUC for preeclampsia with delivery < 37 weeks’ gestation was 0.73 (95% CI 0.68–0.79) at week 24, and increased to 0.87 (95% CI 0.84–0.90) in week 34. For preeclampsia with delivery ≥ 37 weeks’ gestation, the AUC in week 24 was 0.65 (95% CI 0.63–0.68), but increased to 0.79 (95% CI 0.78–0.80) in week 36. The addition of routinely collected clinical measurements throughout pregnancy improve preeclampsia prediction and may be useful to individualize antenatal care.

Effect of PRECEDE Model Application on Controlling Iron Deficiency Anemia among Children

Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) considered one of the most common nutritional disorders which affected about 30 to 50 percent of children. Aim: To evaluate the effect of applying the PRECEDE model on controlling iron deficiency anemia among children. Subjects and method: Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized in this study. Settings: The study was applied in the Pediatric outpatient clinics at Sohag University Hospital and maternal and child health centers at Sohag City (Dar E Salam Abdallah health center). Sample: A purposive sample of 360 children and their mothers was recruited from the selected settings. Three tools were used: (1) Structured interviewing questionnaire, (2) (PRECEDE model questionnaire), and (3) investigation tool used to measure hemoglobin level. Results: knowledge, enabling factors, reinforcing factors, attitudes scores and behaviors of mothers about controlling IDA have been increased, and there was an increasing in the iron level of the studied children with statistical significance after three months of PRECEDE model application. Conclusion: It was concluded that PRECEDE Model application was very effective in improving knowledge and practice regarding IDA and modifying mothers' nutritional behaviors to control the IDA among their children. Recommendation: Dietary education is recommended for mothers during childhood to control and prevent IDA anemia.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEAD EXPOSURE IN BLOOD AND HEMOGLOBIN LEVELS IN WOMEN OF CHILDBEARING AGE IN NORTH SEMARANG DISTRICT, SEMARANG CITY

The results of transportation activities, humans, and also company activities will lead to lead exposure in the surrounding environment, if for a long time the lead exposure can cause health problems for the community. One of the effects of long-term health problems caused by lead exposure is a decrease in hemoglobin levels. Based on the 2013 Riskesdes data, the anemia rate in women of childbearing age (WUS) is 32.9%. The prevalence of anemia in Central Java is 57.7%. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the relationship between blood lead exposure and hemoglobin levels in women of childbearing age, North Semarang District. This type of research is analytical observational with a cross sectional study design conducted in the North Semarang district with 50 respondents selected by purposive sampling. Collecting data by interview, observation, measurement of blood lead levels, measurement of hemoglobin levels. Data analysis used chi-square test and correlation. Based on the results of bivariate analysis, it is known that the value of blood lead levels with r = 0.461 and p = 0.001 which means the strength of the relationship between blood lead levels and hemoglobin has a moderate relationship strength. Based on a study of 50 women of childbearing age who were examined for hemoglobin levels in the blood, there were 56% of women of childbearing age who experienced abnormal hemoglobin levels, and 44% of women of childbearing age who experienced normal hemoglobin levels.

The effects of body mass index, smoking and anemia on fetal birth weight

Objective Fetal growth is an important indicator of fetal health. Low birth weight (LBW) is also associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Numerous factors that affect fetal weight have been identified. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of body mass index, smoking, and anemia on fetal birth weight on term pregnant women who had vaginal delivery in our clinic. Methods This study is a retrospective cross-sectional study. This study included patients who had a spontaneous vaginal delivery at our hospital between January 1st, 2018, and June 15th, 2020. Measurements of hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) levels during birth supported the diagnosis of anemia. Hb levels were compared in three categories in this study: (1) Hb&lt;10 g/dL; (2) ≥10&lt;11 g/dL; and (3) Hb ≥11 g/dL. Anemia was defined as having a Hb level &lt;11 mg/dL. Birth weight was categorized as LBW &lt;2500 g; normal birth weight (NBW) as ≥2500–3999 g, and macrosomia as ≥4000 g. Results Analysis was performed on 1428 pregnant women. There was a statistically significant difference for the Hct and Hb subgroups between the groups (p&lt;0.05). Fetal birth weight was found higher in the non-smoking group than in the smoking group (3302.1± 381.5 g vs. 2839.7±491.5 g; p&lt;0.001). Body mass index (BMI) and Hb levels positively predicted fetal birth weight (β=0.134; p&lt;0.001 and β=0.051; p=0.046), smoking was negatively predicted fetal birth weight (β=-0.245; p&lt;0.001). Conclusion BMI, Hb levels, and smoking status during mothers’ delivery are effective on fetal weight. Smoking was the strongest predictor of fetal birth weight compared with the other variables.

Effect of Nutritional Program on Anemic Status and Pregnancy outcome among Pregnant Women Suffering from Iron Deficiency Anemia

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional disorder during pregnancy. The aim of this study: was to determine the effect of nutritional program on anemic status and pregnancy outcome among pregnant women suffering from iron deficiency anemia. Subjects and Method: The study was carried out at antenatal inpatient units and outpatient clinics in obstetrics and gynecological department at Tanta University and El-Menshawy Hospitals and four governmental antenatal clinics in Tanta city. Convenient sample of 60 pregnant women were included in the study and fulfilling the inclusive criteria. Five tools were used: Tool (I):A structured interview schedule included four parts: (a) Socio-demographic data, (b) Reproductive history, menstrual history, antenatal booking and attendance of antenatal care classes regarding IDA, (c) Current health history of women included: medical, surgical and also family history (d) History of iron deficiency anemia during current pregnancy. Tool (II): Women's knowledge assessment interview: it included two parts: a) Women's knowledge about iron deficiency anemia and b): Assessment of pregnant women's self-care measures and nutritional habits regarding iron deficiency anemia. Tool (III): Iron Intake Calculation Food Frequency Questionnaire it was used to assess women's iron dietary intake. Tool (IV): Bio-physiological measurement included: (a) Anthropometric measurements :Body Mass Index and Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC), (b) Physical examination: to assess signs of iron deficiency anemia, (c) Measurement of serum hemoglobin level on capillary blood using one touch hemoglobin device(d) Stool analysis: was done to exclude parasitic infestation. Tool (V): Outcome assessment tool: included two parts, (a) Maternal outcome assessment sheet and (b) Neonatal outcome assessment sheet. Results: Itrevealed that mean blood hemoglobin level had increased from (9.05±0.98) pre-program to (11.8±0.95) at the end of the 2nd trimester and (10.74±0.93) at the end of the 3rd trimester. Conclusion: Significant improvement of the level of knowledge, dietary habits, anemic status (hemoglobin level) and the maternal & neonatal outcome were found after implementation of the program. Therefore, the study recommended: developing antenatal educational classes for all pregnant women to increase their awareness about importance of early and regular antenatal care as well as proper screening for early diagnosis and effective management of IDA to improve their pregnancy outcome.

Nutritional status of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients attending Kasr Alainy MS unit: an exploratory cross-sectional study

BackgroundNutrition was claimed to be a factor in MS causation, course, complications, and management. Several studies were conducted to assess the nutritional status of MS patients; however, few studies were conducted to assess this problem in Egypt. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to assess the nutritional status of a sample of MS patients.MethodsThe researchers conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study among 76 relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients attending Kasr Alainy Multiple Sclerosis Unit (KAMSU) from October 2018 to January 2019 to assess the nutritional status of a sample of MS patients. Data were collected using a structured interview questionnaire including an inquiry about the socioeconomic status, and nutritional status using anthropometric measurements, patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA), semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires (SQFFQ), and hemoglobin level measurement. Assessment of fatigue was done using the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale 5-items version.ResultsThe mean age of the study participants was 30 ± 6 years. The disease duration ranged from 2 to 264 months. Malnutrition was prevalent among 67.1% (27.6 % overweight, 36.8% obese, and 2.6% underweight). Half of the investigated patients were anemic. According to the PG-SGA, more than half of the studied patients (53.9%) were classified as moderately or suspected malnourished. The unhealthy dietary habits such as taking only a few meals, junk food intake and skipping breakfast were observed in considerable proportions of the group. The SQFFQ revealed overconsumption of energy and fat, and less than acceptable consumption of dietary fibers by most of the studied patients.ConclusionsOverweight, obesity, anemia, and unhealthy dietary habits were prevalent among the RRMS patients attending the KAMSU. Nutrition care service is extremely needed for this group of patients.

UV-Vis Spectrophotometry Observation to Find Appropriate Wavelength for Non-Invasive Blood Haemoglobin Level Measurement Optical Device

The wavelength convention for non-invasive blood hemoglobin measurement remains inconclusive. This experimental observation to find the appropriate wavelength candidate of LED for non-invasive blood hemoglobin level measurement optical device in 200 nm to 900 nm range. This observation ran in Prodia Kedoya and Biochemistry Lab, Universitas Krida Wacana, West Jakarta, in July 2019. The blood samples were obtained from 10 randomly selected consenting non blinded, healthy adult subjects between 18 and 60 years old. Each blood sample was diluted using double distilled water and measured absorbance using UV-Vis Spectrophotometry. Then it compared to blood hemoglobin level by standard gold measurement from Prodia Kedoya. The result shows functional group found in human Hb is C=O. Appropriate wavelengths were obtained based on the Pearson correlation, standard deviation, and human skin pigment, which are 525 nm, 550 nm, and 570 nm. Then the measurement of Hb levels is carried out at the selected wavelength and processed using a ZunZunSite3 to get the mapping data of Hb level from ten respondents. Root mean square error from the measurement. The error obtained is minimal, which indicates that the wavelength used is suitable for measuring the Hb level. That is characterized by theingress of a large number of hairs prematurely into telogen phase resulting in diffuse hair shedding at onetime often with an acute onset so named acute telogen effluvium .A chronic form with a more insidious onsetand a longer duration also exists called chronic telogen effluvium which primarily affects women betweenthe ages of 30 and 60 years and is a diagnosis of exclusion and can cause a great psychological impact onthe life of the affected person.Objective: Measurement the level of serum ferritin and the level of serum vitamin D In adult females withchronic telogen effluvium in order to validate their role in the process of hair loss .Patients&amp; Methods : This cross-sectional study was conducted at the outpatient Department of Dermatologyand Venereology in Al-kindy Teaching Hospital between March and November 2017.Sixty adult Female atage (12 to 52 years) with hair loss in the form of CTE otherwise they are healthy and sixty adult healthy withsame age-matched female with no hair loss were included in the study. Diagnosis was based upon clinicalexamination as well as hair pull test. Serum ferritin and vitamin D levels and Hemoglobin were determinedfor each participant .Results : Hair loss can have an emotional impact on patients leading to anxiety and frustration. Therefore,diagnosing the underlying etiology is necessary for the better management of the disorder The results of thisstudy suggest that the reduced hair density seen in CTE may possibly be associated with low serum levelsof ferritin and vitamin D. It is recommended that hemoglobin level measurement should not be solely reliedon in the assessment of hair loss, as it was not significantly different between patients with CTE and controlsas seen in our study.Conclusions: The female cases in this study had significantly low levels of serum ferritin and vitamin D thancontrols .Our study highlights the importance of serum ferritin and vitamin D evaluation in case of diffusehair fall.

Anemia is the biggest public health problem in the world, especially for women of childbearing age and is a major nutritional problem in Indonesia. One of the risks of iron deficiency anemia can lead to increased body weight of low pregnant women and premature birth of babies. This study aims to determine the effect of giving mung beans to hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with mild anemia in trimester III at May Resti, Amd. Keb Maternity Clinic Dangung-Dangung. This type of research is a Quasi Experiment with a one-group pre-test post-test design. The analysis used was univariate and bivariate analysis. The sample selection used a purposive sampling technique as many as 16 pregnant women with mild anemia. Each respondent was given treatment by giving green bean juice as much as 250 cc, 2 times a day for 7 days. Measurement of hemoglobin levels was carried out 2 times, namely 1 day before and on the 9th day after consumption of green bean juice. There is an effect of green beans on the increase in hemoglobin levels of pregnant women but it is not too significant. For preventive efforts in preventing anemia, pregnant women should consume this green bean juice. In this study, we obtained suggestions to promote green bean juice in an effort to prevent anemia in pregnant women.

Noninvasive Hemoglobin Level Prediction in a Mobile Phone Environment: State of the Art Review and Recommendations.

BackgroundThere is worldwide demand for an affordable hemoglobin measurement solution, which is a particularly urgent need in developing countries. The smartphone, which is the most penetrated device in both rich and resource-constrained areas, would be a suitable choice to build this solution. Consideration of a smartphone-based hemoglobin measurement tool is compelling because of the possibilities for an affordable, portable, and reliable point-of-care tool by leveraging the camera capacity, computing power, and lighting sources of the smartphone. However, several smartphone-based hemoglobin measurement techniques have encountered significant challenges with respect to data collection methods, sensor selection, signal analysis processes, and machine-learning algorithms. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of invasive, minimally invasive, and noninvasive methods is required to recommend a hemoglobin measurement process using a smartphone device.ObjectiveIn this study, we analyzed existing invasive, minimally invasive, and noninvasive approaches for blood hemoglobin level measurement with the goal of recommending data collection techniques, signal extraction processes, feature calculation strategies, theoretical foundation, and machine-learning algorithms for developing a noninvasive hemoglobin level estimation point-of-care tool using a smartphone.MethodsWe explored research papers related to invasive, minimally invasive, and noninvasive hemoglobin level measurement processes. We investigated the challenges and opportunities of each technique. We compared the variation in data collection sites, biosignal processing techniques, theoretical foundations, photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal and features extraction process, machine-learning algorithms, and prediction models to calculate hemoglobin levels. This analysis was then used to recommend realistic approaches to build a smartphone-based point-of-care tool for hemoglobin measurement in a noninvasive manner.ResultsThe fingertip area is one of the best data collection sites from the body, followed by the lower eye conjunctival area. Near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diode (LED) light with wavelengths of 850 nm, 940 nm, and 1070 nm were identified as potential light sources to receive a hemoglobin response from living tissue. PPG signals from fingertip videos, captured under various light sources, can provide critical physiological clues. The features of PPG signals captured under 1070 nm and 850 nm NIR LED are considered to be the best signal combinations following a dual-wavelength theoretical foundation. For error metrics presentation, we recommend the mean absolute percentage error, mean squared error, correlation coefficient, and Bland-Altman plot.ConclusionsWe addressed the challenges of developing an affordable, portable, and reliable point-of-care tool for hemoglobin measurement using a smartphone. Leveraging the smartphone’s camera capacity, computing power, and lighting sources, we define specific recommendations for practical point-of-care solution development. We further provide recommendations to resolve several long-standing research questions, including how to capture a signal using a smartphone camera, select the best body site for signal collection, and overcome noise issues in the smartphone-captured signal. We also describe the process of extracting a signal’s features after capturing the signal based on fundamental theory. The list of machine-learning algorithms provided will be useful for processing PPG features. These recommendations should be valuable for future investigators seeking to build a reliable and affordable hemoglobin prediction model using a smartphone.

ANEMIA DI KALANGAN MAHASISWI: PREVALENSI DAN KAITANNYA DENGAN PRESTASI AKADEMIK

Anemia is still considered as a serious health problem worldwide that requires large attention. Anemia does not only have an impact on health but also affect student achievement. This study aims to identify the prevalence of anemia among female university students in Surabaya and its relationship to academic achievement. This is an observational analytic study with cross-sectional design, involving 92 respondents who were selected using a consecutive sampling method. Data collected by using a questionnaire to obtain respondent characteristics, grade point average (GPA), and menstrual patterns. The measurement of hemoglobin levels carried out using the cyanmethemoglobin method. The results showed that the prevalence of anemia among female students was still quite high and there was a significant relationship between the incidence of anemia and students’ academic achievement measured by grade point average. Female students are one of the groups that are susceptible to anemia, so it is essential to make various efforts to improve Hb levels by increasing the intake of foods high in iron.

HUBUNGAN PEMBERIAN KOMBINASI JUS JAMBU BIJI DAN JUS BAYAM TERHADAP PENINGKATAN KADAR HEMOGLOBIN PADA IBU HAMIL TRIMESTER II-III DI BPM YOSEPHINE PALEMBANG

Anemia is a condition where the body has lack of red blood cells (erythrocytes). The red blood cells contain hemoglobin which it serve to carry oxygen throughout the body’s tissues. Data from Private Practice Yosephine in 2019 are the total of pregnancy women who anemia as 20 respondents. This purpose of the research determined the relation between giving the combination of guava juice and spinach juice to increase hemoglobin levels in pregnancy women. This design of the research was a Quasy Eksperiment with non-equivalent control-group from 20 samples of anemia of the pregnancy women. Variable independent was combination of guava juice and spinach juice, the variable dependent was a change in hemoglobin level of the pregnancy women. Data collection is using primer data by the observation sheet measuring hemoglobin level, before and after checking. The research is using t-test. The result of research was hemoglobin level of pregnancy women on treatment group increasing to 10,71 gr% from 10,16 gr%. The result of t-test with significance level α = 0,05 got ρ-value = 0,001 (ρ-value &lt; α (0,05)), which was concluded if there was relation giving combination guava juice and spinach juice to increase hemoglobin level the pregnancy women.

Blood Hemoglobin, in-vivo Alzheimer Pathologies, and Cognitive Impairment: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Despite known associations between low blood hemoglobin level and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or cognitive impairment, the underlying neuropathological links are poorly understood. We aimed to examine the relationships of blood hemoglobin levels with in vivo AD pathologies (i.e., cerebral beta-amyloid [Aβ] deposition, tau deposition, and AD-signature degeneration) and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), which are a measure of cerebrovascular injury. We also investigated the association between hemoglobin level and cognitive performance, and then assessed whether such an association is mediated by brain pathologies.Methods: A total of 428 non-demented older adults underwent comprehensive clinical assessments, hemoglobin level measurement, and multimodal brain imaging, including Pittsburgh compound B-positron emission tomography (PET), AV-1451 PET, fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET, and magnetic resonance imaging. Episodic memory score and global cognition scores were also measured.Results: A lower hemoglobin level was significantly associated with reduced AD-signature cerebral glucose metabolism (AD-CM), but not Aβ deposition, tau deposition, or WMH volume. A lower hemoglobin level was also significantly associated with poorer episodic memory and global cognition scores, but such associations disappeared when AD-CM was controlled as a covariate, indicating that AD-CM has a moderating effect.Conclusion: The present findings suggest that low blood hemoglobin in older adults is associated with cognitive decline via reduced brain metabolism, which seems to be independent of those aspects of AD-specific protein pathologies and cerebrovascular injury that are reflected in PET and MRI measures.
