Addressing Organisational Pressures as Drivers towards Sustainability in Manufacturing Projects and Project Management Methodologies

The concept of sustainability continues to rapidly grow in interest from disparate academic and industrial fields. This research aims to elucidate further the implications of the sustainability drivers upon project management methodological approaches specifically in the manufacturing industry. This paper studies the three prevalent dialogues in the field of sustainability, relevant to the environmental and social aspects of the Triple Bottom Line, and utilises Institutional Theory to propose organisational pressures as affecting sustainability efforts in industrial manufacturing project management. Furthermore, the literature bodies of Lean and Life Cycle Analysis in manufacturing project management guided our reflection that the various drivers of sustainability put forward that do not consider the distinctive organisational pressures fail to address institutional and systemic project management issues holistically. The authors further conduct and draw on a systematic literature review on the constructs of sustainability in the manufacturing industry and their adopted methodologies, evaluating academic articles published from the year 2001 to 2017. The findings indicate that normative pressures prevail over coercive and mimetic pressures and are seen as the main drivers of sustainability in the manufacturing industry. In an incremental reductionist approach, project management knowledge areas are analysed, and the study posits that Stakeholder and Communications Management are two of the knowledge areas that need to integrate the above pressures to achieve cohesive sustainable industrial results. The principle contribution is to offer a new conceptual perspective on integrating project management knowledge areas with Institutional Theory pressures for more sustainable project management methodologies.

In order to meet the needs of manufacturing enterprises in materials management, improve the market competitiveness of enterprises, and realize the scientific management of modern enterprise, intelligent manufacturing engineering management system based on bill of material (BOM) was developed and designed. In this study, the concept and role of BOM are described in detail, the theory of intelligent manufacturing theory is explained, and the BOM classification method is introduced. In addition, a new BOM coding standard and method is applied to the original BOM code. This technology introduces the processing technology into the code, which effectively improves the readability of the code and solves the old garbled phenomenon. At the same time, an improved BOM quality tracking model was proposed. In this model, quality tracking of the whole process is implemented. The model can determine the origin of quality in the aspects of processing technology, processing workshop, production batch, purchasing batch, material supplier and so on, so as to provide reference for solving the problem.

Fractal approach for manufacturing project management

This paper is focused on the planning problems of production processes in small and medium manufacturing enterprises, where all business activities are performed based on project management practice. The aim of this research is to deliver the new approach for rapid planning and assessment of parameters for the case of multi-project management (MPM). The novel approach that suggests new methods for maximizing utilization of existing resources within a single manufacturing enterprise was proposes in current research.The aim was achieved based on assumption, that multi-project is a complex system, which is directed by laws of the complexity theory. Fractals represent a way of dealing with complexity; organize the complex system through the iteration and integration of the simple units and the common control rules. Using of fractal approach in MPM does not require special knowledge of complex system theory. Cloud Manufacturing Service Paradigm for Group Manufacturing Companies

The continuous refinement of specialization requires that the group manufacturing company must be constantly focused on how to concentrate its core resources in special sphere to form its core competitive advantage. However, the resources in enterprise group are usually distributed in different subsidiary companies, which means they cannot be fully used, constraining the competition and development of the enterprise. Conducted as a response to a need for cloud manufacturing studies, systematic and detailed studies on cloud manufacturing schema for group companies are carried out in this paper. A new hybrid private clouds paradigm is proposed to meet the requirements of aggregation and centralized use of heterogeneous resources and business units distributed in different subsidiary companies. After the introduction of the cloud manufacturing paradigm for enterprise group and its architecture, this paper presents a derivation from the abstraction of paradigm and framework to the application of a practical evaluative working mechanism. In short, the paradigm establishes an effective working mechanism to translate collaborative business process composed by the activities into cloud manufacturing process composed by services so as to create a foundation resulting in mature traditional project monitoring and scheduling technologies being able to be used in cloud manufacturing project management.

Collaborative Project Management: A Systemic Approach to Heavy Equipment Manufacturing Project Management

Quite often over the last decade, heavy equipment manufacturers are trying to improve their project management performance with the use of effective project management methods. However, the challenges encountered aren’t isolated problems and a systemic approach is required. This paper exemplifies how a systemic approach can be applied to heavy equipment manufacturing project (HEMP) management, through of a multifaceted vision. The findings present in the paper are based on a two-year case study in a metallurgic equipment manufacturing enterprise in China. Based on the analysis of HEMP management problems and the contributions on systemic approach application in project management, the paper enriches existing theory by: (1) interpreting the HEMP management system with the top-down disassembly method; (2) developing the collaborative project management approach with a systems view highlighting the project characteristics management and inter-departmental collaboration; (3) making suggestions for systemic approach application in project management. For practitioners and researchers, the findings are particularly meaningful for manufacturing project management and systemic approach application.
