Is the mantle transition zone uniform beneath Precambrian shields?

In the present study, we examine the mantle transition zone (MTZ) structure below the prominent Precambrian shields on the Earth to understand its thermal and compositional properties and depth distribution of MTZ discontinuities. For this study, we used data from Canadian, Brazilian, Baltic, African and Australian Shields. We migrate the receiver functions to the depth domain using 3D tomographic models to examine the topography of MTZ discontinuities that define the upper and lower boundaries of the MTZ. The depth migration results were obtained using two different 3D tomographic velocity models, LLNL_G3D_JPS and GyPSuM. The analysis shows that both models yield similar results. The findings indicate a thinner than usual MTZ beneath all the Precambrian shields with an average thickness of ∼238 ± 8 km. Notably, the present study reveals the upper boundary of the MTZ (410 km discontinuity) displays distinctive topography; in contrast, the lower boundary of the MTZ (660 km discontinuity) is situated at shallower depths. Therefore, the main factor causing the variation in MTZ thickness is the shallowing of the 660 km discontinuity, indicating that the post-spinel transition occurred at higher temperatures with a negative Clapeyron slope, supporting the theory of whole-mantle convection. This suggests that mantle plumes have some appreciable impact on the MTZ beneath Precambrian shields, which are limited to the base of the MTZ. Alternatively, the global mantle warming explanation could be invoked, as it best explains the similar characteristics of the 660 km discontinuity beneath the Precambrian shields. However, this phenomenon needs to be tested through numerical modelling.

Mantle dynamics of the stagnating slab: A case study of Shandong Peninsula and adjacent areas

The Shandong Peninsula is located in the eastern part of the North China Craton (NCC). Influenced by the collision between the North and South China blocks and the subduction of the Pacific Plate, the tectonic evolution process is highly complex. Previous studies have proposed that the thick cratonic root beneath the eastern NCC has been destructed. To better understand the relationship between the craton reactivation and the deep subduction, more constraints on the topography variations of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities are required. In this study, we stacked 9073 P‐to‐S receiver functions calculated from 129 broadband seismic stations to image the depth variations of the MTZ discontinuities beneath the Shandong Peninsula and its adjacent area. To decrease the influence of velocity anomaly above the MTZ discontinuities, we converted the apparent depths into corrected depth using regional and global 3D velocity models. The apparent depth of the 410‐km discontinuity exhibits a depression of approximately 6 km, which normalizes after velocity correction. This implies the existence of the low‐velocity anomaly in the upper mantle, possibly caused by slab dehydration and water infiltration into the upper mantle. The significant depression of the 660‐km discontinuity indicated the presence of the cold Pacific slab stagnating at the base of the MTZ. The gradual westward depression of the 660‐km discontinuity by 50 km could provide evidence for the sinking of the western margin of the flat‐lying subducting Pacific slab in the MTZ beneath the Shandong Peninsula.

Two Mechanisms Generating Intraplate Volcanism in Southeast Asia: Insights From Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities

AbstractDetermining the mechanisms responsible for intraplate volcanism ‐ such as slab devolatilization melting versus active mantle plumes ‐ remains a challenge. The greater South China Sea (SCS) region has experienced extensive intraplate Cenozoic volcanism across areas including Hainan, Southeast Indochina, northern Borneo, the northern SCS, and the post‐spreading SCS basin. The prevalence of volcanism distributed widely across this region prompts fundamental questions about the key geodynamic processes driving such diverse magmatic activities. In this study, we elucidate the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities in this region using SS precursors, which helps to overcome the sparse seismic coverage due to its predominantly oceanic setting. We collected over 16,000 high‐quality seismograms that sample the upper mantle and MTZ beneath this region from global earthquakes and stations. After correcting for the effects of shallow crustal variations and upper mantle heterogeneity on traveltimes of SS phases and their precursors, we unveil lateral variations in the MTZ boundaries (d410 and d660) and intricate features of the mid‐MTZ reflectors (S520S). Significant MTZ thinning and normal S520S waveforms beneath Hainan provide compelling evidence for mantle upwelling through the MTZ. Conversely, the evident splitting of S520S beneath the northern SCS, Southeast Indochina, and northern Borneo, all characterized by stagnant subducted slabs, indicates that the volcanism in these regions likely originated from a mechanism distinct from the active upwelling beneath Hainan. Dehydration melting attributed to devolatilizing stagnant slabs in the MTZ is a potential cause for Cenozoic volcanism in these regions.

No globally detectable seismic interfaces within Earth's mantle transition zone: Evidence for basalt enrichment

Earth's mantle transition zone (MTZ) is characterized by multiple mineral phase changes. The MTZ is bounded seismically by the 410- and 660-km elastic discontinuities, which are interpreted as phase changes from olivine to wadsleyite and from ringwoodite to bridgmanite, respectively. Within the transition zone, the wadsleyite-to-ringwoodite phase change has been assigned to a seismic feature at 520-km depth. Here we show that SS precursors, the most common seismic tool for imaging MTZ structure at global scale, are susceptible to signal-processing artifacts within the transition zone. Owing to the narrow frequency range in which the SS wave is typically examined, S waves scattered by the bounding MTZ discontinuities generate Gibbs-effect overshoots that map into features within the transition zone, including at 520-km depth. These results suggest that inferences of global interfaces at 520-km depth and, in some studies, at 560-km depth, are problematic. If such interfaces are not detectable, Earth's mantle transition zone may depart significantly from the pyrolite composition, enriched in a subducted basalt component that contributes a high proportion of garnet. A basalt fraction (f = ∼0.4) in the MTZ, consistent with some estimates, can render the 520-km discontinuity indistinguishable from signal-processing artifacts.

Seismic evidence for possible entrainment of rising plumes by subducting slab induced flow in three subduction zones surrounding the Caribbean Plate

The dynamic processes associated with subducting tectonic plates and rising plumes of hot material are typically treated separately in dynamical models and seismological studies. However, various types of observations and related models indicate these processes overlap spatially. Here we use precursors to PP and SS reflecting off mantle transition zone discontinuities to map deflections of these discontinuities near three subduction zones surrounding the Caribbean Plate: 1) Lesser Antilles, 2) Middle America and 3) northern South American subduction zones. In all three regions slow seismic anomalies are present behind the sinking slab within the transition zone in tomographic images. Using array methods, we identify precursors and verify their in-plane propagation for MW ≥ 5.8 events occurring between the years 2000 and 2020 by generating a large number of source receiver combinations with reflection points in the area, including crossing ray paths. The measured time lag between PP/SS arrivals and their corresponding precursors on robust stacks are used to measure the depth of the mantle transition zone discontinuities. In all three areas we find evidence for upward deflection of the 660 discontinuity behind the sinking slab, consistent with the presence of hot plume material (average temperature anomalies of 180 to 620 K), while there is not a corresponding downward deflection of the 410 km discontinuity. One interpretation of these disparate observations is suggested based on comparison to existing models of mantle convection and subduction: plume material rising across 660 km discontinuity could be entrained by lateral flow in the transition zone induced by the nearby sinking slab, and thus delaying the rise of hot material across the 410 km discontinuity.

Mapping the mantle transition zone discontinuities across South-Central Europe using body waves from seismic noise correlations

We map the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities beneath South-Central Europe using P-wave reflection phases recovered from noise correlations. We analyze up to four years of seismic noise recordings from 900 broadband stations in the study area. By stacking noise correlations in selected summer months, we significantly improved the retrieval of typically low-amplitude body-wave reflection phases in the light of a quiet surface-wave environment and sufficient noise body-wave illumination from deep paths. We obtain reliable P-wave reflections associated with the 410 km and 660 km discontinuities in the period band of 4–10 s. These short-period reflections reveal clear lateral depth variations of the two discontinuities, indicating complex MTZ structure under the greater Alpine region. This provides new important constraints on present and past mantle dynamics, and it shows the strong potential of passive seismic imaging for studying deep-Earth discontinuities.

Seismic Imaging Beneath Cascadia Shows Shallow Mantle Flow Patterns Guide Lower Mantle Upwellings

AbstractThe mantle transition zone (MTZ) plays an important role in modulating material transport between the upper mantle and the lower mantle. Constraining this transport is essential for understanding geochemical reservoirs, hydration cycles, and the evolution of the Earth. Slabs and hotspots are assumed to be the dominant locations of transport. However, the degree of material transport in other areas is debated. We apply P‐to‐S receiver functions to an amphibious data set from Cascadia to image the MTZ discontinuities beneath mid‐ocean ridges, a hotspot, and a subduction zone. We find a MTZ thinned by 10 ± 6 km beneath the ridges and by 8 ± 4 km beneath the base of the slab, closely resembling the 660 discontinuity topography. Depressions on the 410 discontinuity are smaller, 5 ± 2 km on average, focused in the north and the south and accompanied by supra‐410 discontinuity melt phases. The depressions occur away from locations of uplifted 660 discontinuity, but near slow seismic velocity anomalies imaged in the upper mantle. This suggests lower mantle upwellings occur beneath ridges and beneath the base of slabs but stall in the transition zone, with upper mantle convection determining upward material transport from the transition zone. Therefore, upper mantle dynamics play a larger role in determining transfer than typically assumed.

Receiver Function Analysis Reveals Lateral Variations in Temperature and Water Content in the Mantle Transition Zone Beneath Eastern North America

AbstractUsing recently collected high‐resolution seismic data along a dense linear transect across Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia (called Mid‐Atlantic Geophysical Integrative Collaboration (MAGIC) profile), we analyze P‐to‐S receiver functions to investigate the undulations of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities (410‐ and 660‐km) beneath the central Appalachian region. Our results incorporating the effects of local crustal and mantle structures suggest shallowing of both the 410‐ and the 660‐km discontinuities from the northwest (inland) to the southeast (coast) along MAGIC profile. Hydro‐thermal upwelling beneath the eastern U.S. coastal plain due to a hydrated MTZ and hot upwelling return flow associated with the descending lower mantle Farallon slab is consistent with our observations of MTZ structure considering 3D velocity heterogeneity. The inferred hydrous hot upwelling rising into the upper mantle may trigger dehydration melting atop the 410‐km discontinuity, which may help to explain the presence of a low velocity upper mantle anomaly beneath the region today.

Seismic evidence for a 1000 km mantle discontinuity under the Pacific

Seismic discontinuities in the mantle are indicators of its thermo-chemical state and offer clues to its dynamics. Ray-based seismic methods, though limited by the approximations made, have mapped mantle transition zone discontinuities in detail, but have yet to offer definitive conclusions on the presence and nature of mid-mantle discontinuities. Here, we show how to use a wave-equation-based imaging method, reverse-time migration of precursors to surface-reflected seismic body waves, to uncover both mantle transition zone and mid-mantle discontinuities, and interpret their physical nature. We observe a thinned mantle transition zone southeast of Hawaii, and a reduction in impedance contrast around 410 km depth in the same area, suggesting a hotter-than-average mantle in the region. Here, we furthermore reveal a 4000–5000 km-wide reflector in new images of the mid mantle below the central Pacific, at 950–1050 km depth. This deep discontinuity exhibits strong topography and generates reflections with polarity opposite to those originating at the 660 km discontinuity, implying an impedance reversal near 1000 km. We link this mid-mantle discontinuity to the upper reaches of deflected mantle plumes upwelling in the region. Reverse-time migration full-waveform imaging is a powerful approach to imaging Earth’s interior, capable of broadening our understanding of its structure and dynamics and shrinking modeling uncertainties.

Topographic variations of mantle transition zone discontinuities in the Java subduction zone and adjacent regions from receiver function analyses

An unprecedented number of broadband seismic data from 165 stations were utilized to constrain the topographic variations in seismic discontinuities at the top and bottom of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) in the Java subduction zone. After moveout corrections under a nonplane wavefront assumption and time-to-depth conversions based on the IASP91 Earth model, the depth undulations of two discontinuities that border the MTZ (d410 and d660) were obtained by stacking P receiver functions that were grouped into circular bins with a radius of 1°. The apparent depths exhibit systematically spatial variations that range from 385 to 427 km for the d410 and 608 to 700 km for the d660, which result in a MTZ thickness of 217–309 km. The mean values are 406 ± 12, 665 ± 19, and 258 ± 18 km, suggesting thicker than normal MTZ by an average of 8 km. The major factor that accounts for the systematic depth variations across the study area originates from the subducted slab that perturbs the entirety of the MTZ, which induces a negative thermal anomaly, high velocity zone, and abnormal water presence concentrated in the lower MTZ of western Java. In Lombok and Sumbawa Islands, after the thermal and velocity heterogeneities from the subducted slab were considered, the remnant d660 uplift is found due to a significant thermal anomaly with a magnitude of up to +200 K near the d660. In eastern Java and adjacent regions, advective thermal upwelling associated with toroidal mantle flow that traversed a slab window in central Java induces a low velocity anomaly with a magnitude that is greater than the high velocity anomaly caused by the subducted slab, which apparently depressed the d410 and d660 by the same amount.

Stagnation and tearing of the subducting northwest Pacific slab

Abstract Despite numerous observational and geodynamic modeling studies, the presence of the northwest Pacific slab tear and its influence on mantle dynamics remain controversial. By imaging the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities beneath the Japan Sea and adjacent areas, we demonstrate an ESE-WNW elongated zone with significant MTZ thinning extending from central Honshu, Japan, to the Korean Peninsula, which provides additional supporting evidence for the existence and distribution of a large-scale slab tear. Our results, when combined with other geophysical and geochemical evidence, indicate that the hot mantle material oceanward of the slab may flow through the slab tear and contribute to surface volcanism. Substantial MTZ thickening is widely observed in the region south of the slab tear and suggests the existence of slab stagnation, possibly related to the strong resistance at the bottom of the MTZ.

Mantle transition zone discontinuities beneath Taiwan and its adjacent areas: Implications for slab subductions

How deep the two opposite dipping subduction zones in the vicinity of Taiwan, northwestward-dipping Philippine Sea Plate (PSP) and eastward-dipping South China Sea Slab (SCS), penetrated down into mantle, are hotly on debate and insufficiently imaged by seismic tomographic inversions, either due to inadequate quantities of seismic data or limited vertical resolution of the techniques used by previous investigations. Here we employ an unprecedented number of 55,847 high-quality P-to-S radial receiver functions recorded by 304 broadband seismic stations located in SE China and adjacent areas to image the topography of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities (d410 and d660) to delineate the configurations of the subducted slab segments and analyze the impacts of thermal and water content anomalies on the MTZ. The close-to-normal wavespeed-corrected d410 and a ~ 10 km depression of the corrected d660 to the east of northern Taiwan are revealed, indicating that the PSP breaks off above the d410 and the delaminated PSP drops into the lower MTZ along with slab dehydration. To the east of southern Taiwan, where the SCS begins to subduct eastward, the uplift of the apparent d410 is nearly twice as much as that of the d660. The positive wavespeed anomaly above the d410 and low temperature in the vicinity of the d410 are enough to contribute to the uplift of MTZ discontinuities, suggesting that the SCS just reaches the d410, rather than penetrating the entire MTZ.

Location and characteristics of the X-discontinuity beneath SW Morocco and the adjacent shelf area usingP-wave receiver functions

SUMMARYReceiver function approaches have proven to be valuable for the investigation of crustal and upper mantle discontinuities whose sharp changes in seismic velocities cause wave conversions. While the crustal and mantle transition zone discontinuities are largely understood, the X-discontinuity at 250–350 km depth is still an object of controversial debate. The origin and global distribution of this structure with a velocity jump of 1.5–4.8 % for compressional and shear waves is still unexplained. Although the crustal and mantle transition zone discontinuities beneath SW Morocco and surroundings have been investigated, only a few studies observed the X-discontinuity and place the depth at 260–370 km beneath the region of western Morocco. In order to better locate and characterize the X-discontinuity beneath southwest Morocco, we create P-wave receiver functions using data recorded by the Morocco–Münster array and detect the X-discontinuity at apparent depths of 285–350 km. In the western part of our study region we find apparent depths of ∼ 310–340 km. The eastern part of the study area appears more complex: we locate two velocity jumps at apparent depths of around 285–295 km and 330–350 km in the northeast, and in the southeast we find a discontinuity at apparent depths of 340–350 km. Due to the large depth range and the twofold appearance of the X-discontinuity, we suggest that two different phase transitions cause the X-discontinuity beneath SW Morocco. The velocity contrasts at larger depths likely point to the coesite–stishovite phase transition occurring in deep eclogitic pools. The shallower depths can be explained by the transition from orthoenstatite to high-pressure clinoenstatite which requires the reaction between eclogite and peridotite to form orthopyroxene-rich peridotite. This reaction is likely related to previously proposed small-scale mantle upwellings beneath SW Morocco. Since both phase transitions require eclogite occurrence, the location of the X-discontinuity in this region can be used to indicate the location of recycled oceanic crust.

Slab Dehydration and Mantle Upwelling in the Vicinity of the Sumatra Subduction Zone: Evidence from Receiver Function Imaging of Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities

AbstractA total of 10,586 P‐to‐S radial receiver functions recorded by 64 broadband seismic stations were utilized to image the 410 and 660 km discontinuities (d410 and d660, respectively) bordering the mantle transition zone (MTZ) beneath the Sumatra Island, the Malay Peninsula, and the western margin of the South China Sea. The d410 and d660 were imaged by stacking receiver functions in successive circular bins with a radius of 1°, after moveout corrections based on the 1‐D IASP91 Earth model. The resulting apparent depths of the discontinuities exhibit significant and spatially systematic variations. The apparent depths of the d410 and d660 range from 382 to 459 km and 637 to 700 km with an average of 406 ± 13 and 670 ± 12 km, respectively, while the corresponding values for the MTZ thickness are 217 to 295 km and 261 ± 13 km. Underneath southern Sumatra and adjacent regions, the MTZ is characterized by an uplifted d410 and a depressed d660. While the former is probably caused by the low temperature anomaly, the latter is most likely related to a combination of the low temperature anomaly and dehydration associated with the subducted Australian Plate that has reached at least the d660. In contrast, an abnormally thin MTZ is imaged to the southwest of the Toba Caldera. This observation, when combined with results from previous seismic tomography studies, can be explained by advective thermal upwelling through a slab window.

Mantle Transition Zones (MTZ) discontinuities beneath the Andaman Subduction Zone

We study the mantle transition zone discontinuities beneath the Andaman Subduction Zone using receiver functions generated from broadband seismic stations. The receiver functions were geographically binned using the Common Conversion Point (CCP) technique. Moveout corrected receiver functions shows that P-SV phase conversions from 410 km discontinuity arrives around ~5 to –7 s earlier than expected (~44 s). Migrating and projecting these receiver functions along a depth profile shows that the mean apparent depth of 410 and 660 km discontinuities is 357 ± 5 km and 660 ± 7 km, respectively. This translates to around ~53 ± 6 km elevation in 410 km discontinuity. We attribute this elevation to the perturbation in isotherm caused by the young and steep subducting slab, which results in phase transformation of Olivine (α- phase) to wadsleyite (β-phase) at much earlier depth. There is no substantial topographical variation in depth of discontinuity at 660 km. We infer this flat topography of the 660 km discontinuity due to the termination of the descending slab, as evidenced in recent tomographic studies. The apparent mean MTZ thickness beneath the Andaman Subduction Zone (ASZ) is 296 ± 6 km.

Receiver function mapping of mantle transition zone discontinuities beneath Alaska using scaled 3-D velocity corrections

SUMMARYThe mantle transition zone is the region between the globally observed major seismic velocity discontinuities around depths of 410 and 660 km and is important for determining the style of convection and mixing between the upper and the lower mantle. In this study, P-to-S converted waves, or receiver functions, are used to study these discontinuities beneath the Alaskan subduction zone, where the Pacific Plate subducts underneath the North American Plate. Previous tomographic models do not agree on the depth extent of the subducting slab, therefore improved imaging of the Earth structure underneath Alaska is required. We use 27 800 high quality radial receiver functions to make common conversion point stacks. Upper mantle velocity anomalies are accounted for by two recently published regional tomographic S-wave velocity models. Using these two tomographic models, we show that the discontinuity depths within our CCP stacks are highly dependent on the choice of velocity model, between which velocity anomaly magnitudes vary greatly. We design a quantitative test to show whether the anomalies in the velocity models are too strong or too weak, leading to over- or undercorrected discontinuity depths. We also show how this test can be used to rescale the 3-D velocity corrections in order to improve the discontinuity topography maps.After applying the appropriate corrections, we find a localized thicker mantle transition zone and an uplifted 410 discontinuity, which show that the slab has clearly penetrated into the mantle transition zone. Little topography is seen on the 660 discontinuity, indicating that the slab has probably not reached the lower mantle. In the southwest, P410s arrivals have very small amplitudes or no significant arrival at all. This could be caused by water or basalt in the subducting slab, reducing the strength at the 410, or by topography on the 410 discontinuity, preventing coherent stacking. In the southeast of Alaska, a thinner mantle transition zone is observed. This area corresponds to the location of a slab window, and thinning of the mantle transition zone may be caused by hot mantle upwellings.

Constraints on Seismic Anisotropy in the Mantle Transition Zone From Long‐Period SS Precursors

AbstractThe mantle transition zone (MTZ) of Earth is demarcated by solid‐to‐solid phase changes of the mineral olivine that produce seismic discontinuities at 410 and 660‐km depths. Mineral physics experiments predict that wadsleyite can have strong single‐crystal anisotropy at the pressure and temperature conditions of the MTZ. Thus, significant seismic anisotropy is possible in the upper MTZ where lattice‐preferred orientation of wadsleyite is produced by mantle flow. Here, we use a body wave method, SS precursors, to study the topography change and seismic anisotropy near the MTZ discontinuities. We stack the data to explore the azimuthal dependence of travel‐times and amplitudes of SS precursors and constrain the azimuthal anisotropy in the MTZ. Beneath the central Pacific, we find evidence for ~4% anisotropy with a SE fast direction in the upper mantle and no significant anisotropy in the MTZ. In subduction zones, we observe ~4% anisotropy with a trench‐parallel fast direction in the upper mantle and ~3% anisotropy with a trench‐perpendicular fast direction in the MTZ. The transition of fast directions indicates that the lattice‐preferred orientation of wadsleyite induced by MTZ flow is organized separately from the flow in the upper mantle. Global azimuthal stacking reveals ~1% azimuthal anisotropy in the upper mantle but negligible anisotropy (<1%) in the MTZ. Finally, we correct for the upper mantle and MTZ anisotropy structures to obtain a new MTZ topography model. The anisotropy correction produces ±3 km difference and therefore has minor overall effects on global MTZ topography.

The Mantle Transition Zone in Fennoscandia: Enigmatic High Topography Without Deep Mantle Thermal Anomaly

AbstractSeismological data acquired by dense receiver networks in Fennoscandia enable imaging of Earth's upper mantle structure at unprecedented resolution and provide critical observations for resolving the ongoing debate on the cause of enigmatic high topography in Norway. Proposed mechanisms for the high topography include impact of a mantle plume, as supported by the observation of low seismic velocities in the uppermost mantle in southern Norway in contrast to high velocities in Sweden. We image the mantle transition zone (MTZ) in Fennoscandia by common conversion point stacking of 14,873 receiver functions from 14 networks including the recently deployed ScanArray. We find both MTZ discontinuities at their expected depths of 410 and 660 km within an uncertainty of 5–15 km and the thickness of the MTZ similar to the global average. These observations show that the high topography in western Scandinavia cannot be caused by thermal influence from the deep mantle.

Receiver function imaging of mantle transition zone discontinuities and the origin of volcanism beneath Libya

The origin of magma at Libya’s volcanic provinces is still poorly understood. In order to constrain these sources we report results of the first P-to-S receiver function investigation of the 410 km and 660 km depth discontinuities bounding the mantle transition zone (MTZ) beneath Libya. The dataset used by this study is a combination of eighteen seismic stations belonging to the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science and the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology Data Management Center. The average thickness of the MTZ is found to be 249 ± 14 km, which is similar to the global average. A 10 km thinning of the MTZ was observed beneath the Miocene – Holocene volcanic provinces in central Libya, suggesting higher-than-normal temperatures in those parts of the MTZ. Our preferred model suggests that the origin of volcanism in Libya is due to higher temperatures in the MTZ beneath this region. However, in Eastern Libya, the thickness of the MTZ increases from 249 km to 270 km which indicates a colder-than-normal MTZ which may relate to ancient subducted slabs due to the Africa-Europe convergence since the late Mesozoic.

Absence of thermal influence from the African Superswell and cratonic keels on the mantle transition zone beneath southern Africa: Evidence from receiver function imaging

The depths of the 410 km (d410) and 660 km (d660) discontinuities beneath southern Africa, which is presumably underlain by the lower-mantle African Superswell, are imaged in 1∘ radius consecutive circular bins using over 6400 P-to-S receiver functions (RFs) recorded by 130 seismic stations over a 27 yr period. When the IASP91 standard Earth model is utilized for moveout correction and time-depth conversion, a normal mantle transition zone (MTZ) thickness of 246 ± 7 km is observed, suggesting that the Superswell has no discernible effect on mantle transition zone temperature. Based on the negligible disparity of the mean MTZ thicknesses between on (246 ± 6 km) and off (246 ± 8 km) cratonic regions, we conclude that the deep Archean cratonic keels possess limited influence on MTZ thermal structure. The apparently shallower-than-normal MTZ discontinuities and the parallelism between the d410 and d660 are mostly the results of upper mantle high wave speed anomalies probably corresponding to a thick lithosphere with a mean thickness of about 245 km beneath the Kaapvaal and 215 km beneath the Zimbabwe cratons. In contradiction to conclusions from some of the previous studies, the resulting spatial distribution of the stacking amplitudes of the P-to-S converted phases at the discontinuities is inconsistent with the presence of an excessive amount of water in the MTZ and atop the d410.
