Four new species of Mesorhaga Schiner (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) from Northeastern Brazil, with an identification key to South American species of the genus

Four new species of the sciapodine genus Mesorhaga Schiner (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) are described from the states of Piauí and Maranhão (Northeastern Brazil): Mesorhaga danbickeli sp. nov., M. gomesi sp. nov., M. laetitia sp. nov. and M. parnasete sp. nov. All species are illustrated with photos of general habitus and genitalia of males, and an identification key to South American species is provided.

A taxonomic study on the nominate subgenus Macrolycus Waterhouse, 1878 from China (Coleoptera, Lycidae).

In the present study, a new species of Macrolycus s. str. is reported from China and described as M. subapicis sp. nov. M. bowringi Waterhouse, 1878 is recorded to China for the first time. The above two species, M. oreophilus Kazantsev, 2002 and M. gansuensis Kazantsev, 2002 are illustrated with the male habitus and genitalia. In addition, a distribution map, and a key to the species of Macrolycus s. str. in the world are provided.

The Micronecta Kirkaldy, 1897 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Micronectidae) of Iran, with four new records and an illustrated key to the species.

The fauna of Micronectidae (pygmy water boatmen) was investigated in Guilan Province. The present study has raised the number of micronectid species known from Iran to nine by reporting four first records for the country, including Micronecta carpatica Wrblewski, 1958, M. griseola Horvth, 1899, M. poweri (Douglas & Scott, 1869), and M. pusilla (Horvth, 1895). Morphological diagnoses for these four species are provided, accompanied by illustrations of male habitus, male genitalia, and a key to the species of Micronecta known from Iran.

Two new records of the genus Kamendaka (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Derbidae) from Korea with a key to the Korean species

Two new records of the genus Kamendaka Distant, K. aculeata Yang & Wu and K. annulata Yang & Wu, are recorded from Korea for the first time. The morphological information, such as the diagnosis of male habitus and genitalia, is provided with photographs, and a key to the Korean species of the genus Kamendaka is presented.

A revision of the Chilean water penny genus Tychepsephus Waterhouse, 1876 (Coleoptera, Psephenidae, Eubriinae), with description of a second species and two larval morphotypes, and notes on other Chilean Psephenidae.

The Chilean water penny genus Tychepsephus Waterhouse, 1876 is revised, with descriptions and photographic illustrations of life stages including two larval morphotypes, the pupa of one morphotype, and adults of two species. The pupa of Tychepsephus has not been reported previously. Tychepsephuscekalovicisp. nov. is described, and Ectopria (Chilectopria) grandis Pic, 1947, syn. nov. is proposed as a new synonym of Tychepsephusfelix Waterhouse, 1876, which is redescribed. Taxonomic treatment of the adults of both species includes images of the habitus of males and females, morphological variation, and male and female genitalia. Males and females are sexually dimorphic. Information on the habitat of Tychepsephus is provided and illustrated with photographs, and the known geographic distribution of the two species is mapped. The occurrence of Tychepsephus in Argentina is reported; therefore, the genus no longer can be considered endemic to Chile. The taxonomic status and geographic distribution in South America of other species of Psephenidae, particularly members of the subfamily Eubriinae, is reviewed.

Revision of Australian Ectomocoris with the description of nine new species (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae)

The Australian species of the genus Ectomocoris Mayr, 1865 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Peiratinae), are revised. A total of 13 species are recognised, including nine new species: E. binotatus Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov., E. borealis Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov., E. fuscatus Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov., E. fuscifemoralis Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov., E. interiorius Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov., E. latus Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov., E. luteolus Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov., E. major Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov. and E. spinosus Malipatil & Liu, sp. nov. Redescriptions of E. australicus (Reuter, 1881), E. decoratus (Stål, 1863), E. ornatus (Stål, 1863) and E. truculentus (Stål, 1863) are presented. Callisphodrus patricius Stål, 1867 is treated as a new junior synonym of E. ornatus (Stål, 1863). Lectotypes are designated for Eumerus (Eumerus) australicus Reuter, 1881, Pirates decoratus Stål, 1863, P. ornatus Stål, 1863, P. truculentus Stål, 1863 and C. patricius Stål, 1867. A key to species is provided together with images of dorsal habitus of males and females of different wing forms and major structures of the male genitalia to assist distinguishing these species. Based on morphology, brief comments are provided on putative species groups within the studied species. A male extragenital structure, present in almost half of the species studied, is described in detail and its potential value in diagnosis and analysis of phylogenetic relationships within the genus as well as between related peiratine genera is discussed.

A new record of the genus Ecdelphax (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Delphacidae) from the Korean Peninsula with a key to the species

The delphacid species, Ecdelphax tortilis (Kouh, 1982), is recorded from the Korean Peninsula for the first time. The morphological information such as diagnosis and redescription of male habitus and genitalia are presented with photographs, and a key to the species of genus Ecdelphax is provided.

Prodidomus rufus Hentz, 1847 (Arachnida: Araneae), Redescription of Female and New Record of Male from South of Iraq

The female of the species Prodidomus rufus Hentz 1847, which was previously recorded from Al-Najaf province in central Iraq, was described inaccurately. Therefore, we re-described it as the males were first recorded in Al-Gharraf district, north of Thi Qar province- southern Iraq, depending on the copulatory organs (Palp and Epigynum) illustrated in the figures and have a role in distinguishing between species. The habitus of males and females, leg parts measurements of males and females, and a map of specimen’s locations are also presented.

A New Species of the Grass-Feeding Plant Bug Genus Gracilimiris (Heteroptera: Miridae: Mirinae) from Arizona and Texas, with a Revised Key to Species

The grass-feeding genus Gracilimiris Stonedahl and Henry, 1991 is reviewed and G. rubrolineatus new species, from Arizona and Texas, USA, is described. Provided are a diagnosis, description, and digital images of the adult male and female and male genitalia of G. rubrolineatus; diagnoses, male habitus images, and summary of hosts and distributions of the three previously described species; and a revised key to species to facilitate identification.

A new genus and species of minute litter bugs family Schizopteridae Reuter, 1891 from China (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Dipsocoromorpha).

A new genus and species of Schizopteridae, Cornonannusbui gen. et sp. nov. is described from Yunnan Province, China. The new genus is closest to Pachyplagia Gross, 1951, Ogeria, Distant 1913, and Kaimon Hill, 2004 in morphology, but it can be distinguished from these genera by the male having a frontal process, the absence of pronotal collar, the distinct venation of forewing, a tarsi formula of 3-3-3, and the middle area of abdominal tergites I to VII with small, round tubercles. Photographs of the male habitus, head, thorax, abdomen, appendages, and genitalic structures, as well as scanning electron micrographs of the male head, thorax, abdomen, and genitalic structures and drawings of male genitalia, are provided. Moreover, a key to all known Chinese schizopterid genera is presented.

Two new species of Setostylus Matile, 1990 (Diptera: Keroplatidae) from China.

In this study, two new species of Setostylus (Diptera: Keroplatidae: Keroplatinae), S. tridigitus sp. n. and S. triumphus sp. n. are described, with a key to all the species of the genus. Male habitus and images of diagnostic morphological characteristics are provided. Status of these two new species is also supported by the genetic distances and neighbor-joining (NJ) tree in the DNA barcode analysis.

An update on Penthetria funebris (Diptera: Bibionidae) in Romania

We summarized the known data on the distribution of Penthetria funebris Meigen, 1804 in Romania, based on old and two new records. We illustrate the male habitus, brachypterous wing, head and terminalia.

Surgical castration consists in bilateral orchiectomy and chemical castration uses pharmaceutical drugs to deactivate the testes. Human castration is a practice known from Sumerian time as cruel torture. In history, it has been a religious practice or instrument to obtain eunuch slaves or white voices. Aim of our study was to explore the history of human castration. METHODS: A literature review on human castration was performed through Medline, PubMed and Google Scholar, searching words “castration”, “orchiectomy” and “androgen deprivation”. RESULTS: The earliest records for intentional human castration to produce eunuchs are from the Sumerian city of Lagash in the 21st century BC. Ancient Greeks and ancient Romans used it to produce eunuch slaves. During Byzantine Empire, it was considered such as a punishment. In Arabian countries castration started to be used to obtain faithful harem guardians since 750 AD and then, during the Ottoman Empire, the Imperial Harem was a powerful institution of the Sultan. From the late 16th century castration was carried out in Italy to preserve the unbroken male voice into adult life. In 1941 Huggins and Hodges demonstrated control of prostate cancer growth rate by androgens and showed that there is no better way to achieve temporary control of prostate cancer growth than androgen deprivation (AD). The earliest method of AD is represented by the bilateral orchiectomy, which means a definitive therapy for the patient. In 1944 treatment with Diethylstilbestrol was described as to the first method of reversible castration. In 1979 Schally et al showed that advanced prostate cancer patients treated with daily doses of LHRH agonists experienced a 75% decrease in serum testosterone levels and a marked reduction in cancer-associated bone pain. Medical castration by means of medrossiprogesterone acetate or cyproterone acetate is also used for convicted rapist or sex offenders in some countries. Although more expensive, medical castration is nowadays the standard considering its hypothetical reversible effect and the psychological trauma related to surgery. CONCLUSIONS: The possibility to change male habitus through surgical castration has been evident since the 11th century BC and used to punish or to create specific workers such as eunuchs or singers. Just only in the last century the role of surgical castration has been associated with prostate cancer treatment and LHRH agonist and antagonist have become the new standard to induce castration. A REVISION OF THE NEW WORLD MOTH GENUS ATHYRMA HBNER (LEPIDOPTERA: EREBIDAE).

The genus Athyrma Hbner, [1823] 1816 is revised, with a generic re-description and transcriptions of original descriptions (with translations) of all described species provided. Sixteen Athyrma species are recognized in this paper. Nine species are new: A. brigittae Adams McCabe sp. nov., A. tapichensis Adams McCabe, sp. nov., A. urbanae Adams McCabe, sp. nov., A. yasuni Adams McCabe, sp. nov., A. ciboney McCabe Adams, sp. nov., A. cryani McCabe Adams, sp. nov., A. itatiaia McCabe Adams, sp. nov., A. romacki McCabe Adams, sp. nov., and A. svensoni McCabe Adams, sp. nov. Taxonomic changes are as follows: Athyrma antica Schaus, 1912, syn. nov., a junior synonym of A. nodosa; A. cunesema Hampson, 1926, syn. nov., a junior synonym of A. cunesema; Athyrma cordigera Walker, 1869, comb. nov., syn. nov., a junior synonym of Celiptera levina Stoll, 1781. A lectotype is designated for A. adjutrix (Cramer, 1780). Neotypes are designated for four species: Athyrma nodosa Mschler, 1880, A. orbana Mschler, 1880, A. tuberosa (Felder and Rogenhofer, 1874), and A. ganglio Hbner, [1831] 1825. Athyrma ganglio Hbner, [1831] 1825, rest. stat. and A. dormitrix Guene in Boisduval and Guene, 1852, rest. stat. are removed from synonymy and restored as valid species. Athyrma has been associated with the Eulepidotinae however is here tentatively assigned to Erebinae: Poaphilini because of its similarity to Mimophisma Hampson, 1926. Illustrations of male and female adult habitus, ultimate instar larva, dissections of male and female external and internal genitalia are provided. Athyrma misera Butler, 1879 is removed from Athyrma and placed in Ezra gen. nov. Nymbis resecta Dognin, 1912 is removed from its current placement in Athyrma and placed in Facies gen. nov. Checklists of all three genera are provided.

Updated Key to the North American Species of Euceratocerus LeConte, with a New State Record for Euceratocerus gibbifrons White (Coleoptera: Ptinidae) from North Carolina, USA

Euceratocerus gibbifrons White is reported as a new state record for North Carolina. Specimens were collected in Union County by operating a UV (black light) trap at an aging log pile. Photos of the dorsal habitus, lateral habitus, and antennae of males and females of all three US species (E. gibbifrons, Euceratocerus hornii LeConte, and Euceratocerus parvus White) are presented along with an illustration of the only species known from Mexico (Euceratocerus argenteus White). Photos of the dorsal habitus, lateral habitus, and anterior view of the head and antennae of the holotype of E. hornii are presented. Illustrations of the antennae of most species are also provided. These images are included in an updated key to the Euceratocerus LeConte species of North America. The confused taxonomic history of Euceratocerus and the possibility of synonyms are addressed.

Flesh flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) of Kalamaili Mountain Ungulate Nature Reserve (China: Xinjiang): checklist and description of four new species.

A checklist of the flesh flies occurring in Kalamaili Mountain Ungulate Nature Reserve, Xinjiang, NW China, is presented, based on material collected from 2009 to 2017. The checklist includes 18 genera and 46 species, 12 of which are new records for China. Four new species are described: Asiosarcophila kashanensis sp. nov., Miltogramma szpilai sp. nov., Sphecapatodes superciliosa sp. nov., and Sphecapatodes xinjiangensis sp. nov. Extensive documentation of the male and female habitus, details of the head, and the specialised setae of the male fore tarsus is given for all species where relevant, except for those already well illustrated in other publications. The male terminalia of almost all species of Paramacronychiinae and Sarcophaginae recorded from Kalamaili are illustrated with focus-stacked photographs.

• Taxonomy of the cantharid genus Stenothemus is studied. • Five new species are discovered and described from Guangxi, China. • The habitus and aedeagi of males are illustrated. • The abdominal sternites VIII and internal genitalia of females are present. • A key for the identification of the new species is provided. Five new species of Stenothemus Bourgeois, 1907 from Guangxi, China are described, S. normalis sp. nov., S. flavicans sp. nov., S. nigripennis sp. nov., S. elongaticeps sp. nov. and S. maculaticollis sp. nov.. They are illustrated with habitus photos and aedeagi of males, also abdominal sternites VIII and internal genitalia of females. A key for the identification of the above species is provided.

Sophianus palawanensis sp. nov., the first Isometopine (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Miridae) from the Philippines.

A new species, Sophianus palawanensis sp. nov. (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Miridae, Sophianini) is described from the Palawan Island in the Philippines. Photographs of the male habitus and genital structures, as well as detailed SEM micrographs of selected morphological structures, are presented. Trichobothrial patterns of Sophianini and their importance for the hypothesizing relationships within Isometopinae are discussed.

Two new empoascine leafhopper genera, Thaioasca and Mjolnirus, from Thailand (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae), with a checklist of Empoascini in Thailand.

Two new microleafhopper genera of Empoascini, Thaioasca Wang, Xu Qin, gen. nov. and Mjolnirus Wang, Xu Qin, gen. nov., based on the type species, Thaioasca contaminata Wang, Xu Qin, sp. nov. and Mjolnirus mediolobus Wang, Xu Qin, sp. nov. are described from Thailand. Male habitus photos and illustrations of male genitalia of these two new species are given. A checklist of Empoascini from Thailand is also provided.

Description of new species of two genera Dayus Mahmood and Znana Dworakowska from Thailand (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae)

• Two microleafhopper genera, Dayus Mahmood, 1967 and Znana Dworakowska, 1994 are reviewed. • Dayus furcatus sp. nov. Xu, Dietrich & Qin and Znana furca sp. nov. Xu, Dietrich & Qin, are described from Thailand. • Male habitus photos and illustrations of male genitalia of the two new species are given. Two genera, Dayus Mahmood, 1967 and Znana Dworakowska, 1994 of the leafhopper tribe Empoascini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae) are reviewed. One new species of each genus, Dayus furcatus sp. nov. and Znana furca sp. nov. , are described from Thailand. A checklist and distribution summary of Dayus Mahmood species is given. Male habitus photos and illustrations of male genitalia of the two new species and notes on allied species are also provided.
