Asperger’s/autistic spectrum disorder project: Transition from higher education to the workplace
 • Nov 19, 2024
 • Journal of the National Institute for Career Education and Counselling
 • Dawn-Marie Walker

The main diagnostic criteria for autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) are communication and social interaction difficulties, which can make the transition from education to the workplace traumatic. A course was organised to help with this transition; with four learning outcomes: i) Knowing oneself: ASD inherent traits and the work setting; ii) Career research: mapping ASD traits onto careers; iii) Workplace issues; and iv) Developing an action plan. Qualitative interviews were conducted. All respondents agreed that the course was useful with two main themes arising: confidence building and identifying with having ASD.

 • Korean Association for Literacy

The purpose of this study is to develop an introductory stage of basic literacy for elementary school learners of Korean as a Second Language (KSL) and to explore educational content and methods from a balanced approach perspective. To this end, the study presents three key aspects of introdutory KSL education: first, word-level basic literacy instruction; second, laying the foundation for spoken language and literacy development through phonological awareness; and third, a meaningful interaction-based balanced approach. Subsequently, a method for con structing a meaning-oriented word list was proposed as introductory basic literacy content. This method is based on the beginner vocabulary list from the <Korean Language Curriculum>, with the semantic field of words serving as the main cri terion. Next, we sought a plan to organize educational content centered on phono logical awareness. Examples of phonological awareness tasks at the word, syllable, and phoneme levels, suitable for the introductory stage of Korean were provided, along with discussions on how to integrate these tasks with basic literacy content and Hangul learning. Finally, strategies for implementing a balanced approach that incorporates wordplay songs and word- centered interactions were presented.

 • Mohammad Reza Ibrahim + 1 more

Afghanistan is a conflict-impacted country with a higher education sector that is undergoing rapid growth in the last two decades. The Ministry of Higher Education established the Quality Assurance & Accreditation Commission in 2009; and established the Quality Assurance & Accreditation Directorate (QAAD) in 2011. This body is to administer and oversee the accreditation process in all public and private HEIs of Afghanistan with a strategic outlook. By providing a comprehensive QA Framework and aiming to meet international standards; QAAD is functioning for Internal and External Quality Assurance of HEIs. This Framework emphasizes the development of a Strategic Plan for Higher Education Institutions in its first main criteria. Since QAAD and its relevant processes of Quality Assurance are newly implemented phenomena for the Higher Education Institutions; the processes of Developing Strategic Plans seem to be ineffective, challenging, and not used as a fundamental tool for quality enhancement. Furthermore, there are considerable challenges facing the implementation level of developed plans. Considering the important role of strategic planning in quality assurance; this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and impacts of strategic planning on the processes of quality enhancement of Bamyan University as one of the National Higher Education Institutions. Nine major aspects of quality issues focusing on three main levels of strategic planning at the institution, Faculty, and Department are among the core subjects of this study. This study is carried out from the implementers’ point of view and includes the responses of all academic and non-academic members of Departments, Faculties, and Leadership of Bamyan University. Furthermore, this provides lessons learned and recommendations for institutions, policy makers, and other Higher Education Institutions. This study is conducted from February to August 2021 in Bamyan University of Afghanistan. A questionnaire was adopted and developed as the instrument of this study and nine major aspects of the qualification issues were included in the instrument. SPSS tool was employed to descriptively analyze the findings of the study. This study has shown that the exercise and experiences of strategic planning have not meaningfully and satisfactorily contributed to the enhancement of the quality of education of this University. The mean value of all aspects is somehow below average or average level. From the respondents’ point of view; the impact of strategic planning on quality assurance activities is greater than other aspects and this impact is lower in the sustainability of financial resources.

Regeneration of alveolar bone defects in the experimental pig model: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
 • Mar 7, 2024

 • Siddharth Shanbhag + 6 more

Pigs are emerging as a preferred experimental invivo model for bone regeneration. The study objective was to answer the focused PEO question: in the pig model (P), what is the capacity of experimental alveolar bone defects (E) for spontaneous regeneration in terms of new bone formation (O)? Following PRISMA guidelines, electronic databases were searched for studies reporting experimental bone defects or extraction socket healing in the maxillae or mandibles of pigs. The main inclusion criteria were the presence of a control group of untreated defects/sockets and the assessment of regeneration via 3D tomography [radiographic defect fill (RDF)] or 2D histomorphometry [new bone formation (NBF)]. Random effects meta-analyses were performed for the outcomes RDF and NBF. Overall, 45 studies were included reporting on alveolar bone defects or extraction sockets, most frequently in the mandibles of minipigs. Based on morphology, defects were broadly classified as 'box-defects' (BD) or 'cylinder-defects' (CD) with a wide range of healing times (10 days to 52 weeks). Meta-analyses revealed pooled estimates (with 95% confidence intervals) of 50% RDF (36.87%-63.15%) and 43.74% NBF (30.47%-57%) in BD, and 44% RDF (16.48%-71.61%) and 39.67% NBF (31.53%-47.81%) in CD, which were similar to estimates of socket-healing [48.74% RDF (40.35%-57.13%) and 38.73% NBF (28.57%-48.89%)]. Heterogeneity in the meta-analysis was high (I2 > 90%). A substantial body of literature revealed a high capacity for spontaneous regeneration in experimental alveolar bone defects of (mini)pigs, which should be considered in future studies of bone regeneration in this animal model.

 • Journal of Oral Rehabilitation
 • Ivana Meyer Prado + 4 more

This global bibliometric review aimed to investigate trends in publications relating to tinnitus and TMD. A search was performed in eight databases (June/2022), by independent researchers with relevant keywords about tinnitus and TMD, without restriction of date or language. Original research or case report/series evaluating prevalence, association and risk related to tinnitus and TMD were included. Independent examiners selected studies by title and abstract and performed data extraction. Data about publication and researchers, study population, objective, study design and diagnostic criteria for tinnitus and TMD were exported to VintagePoint® for bibliometric analyses. Data about the direct association between tinnitus and TMD were extracted. One hundred and seventeen articles from 25 countries were included, most observational (68.4%) and evaluating association (N = 60; 44.8%). Among the 60 studies of association, 22 (36.6%) presented results of a direct association between the presence/absence of tinnitus and the presence/absence of TMD. Brazil (19.5%) and the United States (12.7%) were the countries with the most publications, and Dentistry (48.6%) was the main publication area. A growth in publications in Dentistry was observed in the past 30 years and in the past 10 years in Medicine. Half of the studies included the elderly population (50.2%). The main diagnostic criterion for both tinnitus (37.8%) and TMD (28%) was general questionnaires and/or self-report. There is a growing trend in publications relating to tinnitus and TMD, especially in Dentistry, with a predominance of observational and association studies in the elderly population using questionnaires and/or self-report. More research with robust diagnostic methods and other study designs should be encouraged in the future.

Analyzing the Shelter Site Selection Criteria for Disaster Preparedness Using Best–Worst Method under Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Sets
 • Mar 4, 2024
 • Sustainability
 • Erkan Celik

Shelters are vital for affected people after a disaster because of the accommodation, safety, and security. In this paper, we analyze the shelter site selection criteria for disaster preparedness applying the best–worst method under interval type-2 fuzzy sets. The proposed approach utilizes the advantages of fewer pairwise comparisons with the best–worst method and better reflection of uncertainty with interval type-2 fuzzy sets. For this reason, the criteria are determined based on a literature review and the opinion of nine disaster experts. The experts have worked as disaster officers in a variety of locations, including Sivrice (Elazığ), Pazarcık, and Elbistan (Kahramanmaras) and Syrian refugee camps such as Nizip container city. In this step, 6 main criteria and 25 sub-criteria are evaluated using the proposed approach. According to the nine experts’ opinions, the most important main criterion is determined as proximity. Distribution center capacity, adequate distribution logistics personnel, available electricity, distance to settlement, and landslides and flooding are also determined as the five most important sub-criteria. For disaster preparedness, responsible organizations and managers should consider these important criteria for temporary shelter site selection.

Introduction. In modern conditions, in connection with the active process of integration of states and the internationalization of education, the issues of patriotic education of youth are becoming increasingly important. Patriotism is the main aspect of the sociocultural sphere. It becomes a priority to deeply understand how patriotism is perceived by young people, and how these views can influence the formation of young people’s civic, national identity, their willingness to participate in world initiatives and overcome global challenges. The purpose of the study is to study aspects of the positive value attitude of university students to patriotism and to determine the main levels and criteria for the formation of patriotic values. Materials and methods. The study involved university students in Petrozavodsk (Russia) in the areas of training “Pedagogical education (with two profiles of training) Life Safety and Physical Culture” and “Musicology and Musical Applied Arts” (n=99). Research methods: literature analysis, questionnaires, analysis of student works (essays), methods of descriptive statistics using MS Excel. Results. Within the framework of this study, key aspects are identified that influence students’ positive value attitude towards patriotism, such as: education, family upbringing, socio-cultural environment of the university and regional characteristics. The prevalence of a high level of positive-value attitude towards patriotism with a pronounced socially significant component among students-musicians and a focus on personal significance in the realization of life goals among student teachers is shown. Analysis of the data, according to the general indicator, showed that 61.8% of respondents have a high level of positive value attitude towards patriotism; average – 27.7%; emotional passivity and a low level of attitude towards patriotism are characteristic of 10.5% of respondents. Discussion of results and conclusion. The positive value attitude of university students to patriotism is of great importance in the formation of civic activity, national consciousness and identity. The results of the study confirmed that this is manifested through a positive attitude towards one’s country and its values, promotes active participation in public life, political processes, volunteer events, as well as an understanding of one’s cultural and historical affiliation for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage and traditions. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the development of diagnostic tools for assessing, forming and adjusting the positive value attitude of students to patriotism in the educational space of the university

The quality of the company will increase as employee performance increases. There are many ways that companies or organizations can improve employee performance. One way is to provide awards or rewards for employees who excel and for employees who are not able to provide their best performance, they will be given as a consequence. Rewards will be given by assessing employee performance. So far, Kofipindo has only relied on leaders' decisions to assess employee performance. This makes employees less motivated to show their best performance. Decision support systems are alternative solutions or alternative means and steps to resolve problems so that problems can be resolved effectively and efficiently. The Moosra method is used to calculate the weight of the criteria and determine the level of rejection as the main criterion. Where the decision support system is used as a model or reference in the decision-making process, especially in the employee performance assessment process. The Moosra method examines the suitability of separating a set of alternative value data with certain criteria described in the decision matrix. The aim of the research is to assist in the employee performance assessment process, making it easier for companies to provide rewards for the performance results of selected employees. The results obtained in the research process were Alternative (A10) with the name Roland Zebua as the employee with the best performance assessment.

 • Anticancer Research
 • Daisuke Nishikawa + 18 more

Although gemcitabine plus cisplatin (GC) prolongs survival in patients with recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (R/M NPC) compared with fluorouracil plus cisplatin, no study has evaluated the efficacy and safety of GC in nonendemic regions, including Japan, yet. Therefore, we assessed the safety and efficacy of GC in Japanese patients with R/M NPC. We retrospectively reviewed patients with R/M NPC who received GC treatment at the Aichi Cancer Center Hospital from January 2017 to March 2020. The main eligibility criteria were histologically confirmed NPC, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) of 0-2, and locally recurrent disease unsuitable for local treatment or metastatic disease. The regimen was administered every 3 weeks (gemcitabine, 1,000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8; cisplatin, 80 mg/m2 on day 1). Fourteen patients (median age, 58 years) were included in the study. Two patients had an ECOG PS of 2 and 11 exhibited nonkeratinizing histology. Of the eight patients with measurable lesions, one exhibited complete response and seven exhibited partial response, with an objective response rate of 75%. Median progression-free survival and overall survival were 7.7 and 24.2 months, respectively. Common grade 3 or 4 adverse events included neutropenia (64%), thrombocytopenia (14%), and febrile neutropenia (14%). The median relative dose intensity of gemcitabine and cisplatin was 62% and 60%, respectively. No treatment-related deaths occurred. The GC regimen demonstrates promising activity and is tolerable in Japanese patients with R/M NPC.

Untreated Allergy Among Middle School Students: Associations with Socioeconomic Adversities and Academic, Behavior, and Health Difficulties.
 • Feb 29, 2024
 • The Journal of school health
 • Kénora Chau + 1 more

Many adolescents with allergy do not receive physician treatment (allergyuntreated). We explored its association with socioeconomic adversities and academic-behavior-health difficulties, which remain unaddressed. This cross-sectional school-based-population study compared the above factors of middle-school adolescents with allergyuntreated and those with treated allergy (allergytreated) (mean age = 13.5 ± 1.2) from north-eastern France. Participants completed a questionnaire collecting socioeconomic adversities (nonintact family, low parents' education, insufficient family income, poor social support, suffered verbal/physical violence, and sexual abuse), low academic performance, excessive screen time, substance use, sleep difficulty, poor physical health, depressive symptoms, suicide attempt, poor quality of life, and allergytreated/allergyuntreated. Logistic regression models showed that allergyuntreated was associated with all the factors considered (sex-age-class-level-adjusted odds ratio (saclOR) reaching 3.94, p < .001) and the risk score (number of main criteria: suffered sexual abuse, excessive screen time, poor quality of life, cannabis use, low parents' education, and poor social support): saclOR 4.75, 9.23, 15.64, and 31.73 (p < .001) for risk scores 1, 2, 3, and ≥4, versus risk score = 0 (pseudo-R2 = 11.1%). Socioeconomic adversities and academic-behavior-health difficulties may be used to detect adolescents with allergyuntreated for care.

It is proposed to consider the bending fatigue strength of the crankshaft as the main criterion of its operability during operation. It is noted that thermomechanical straightening with heating by stress relaxation method is most acceptable for straightening critical shafts that have received a curvature of the longitudinal axis during operation. Bending fatigue tests of round samples with a diameter of 20 mm in a dangerous section were carried out to substantiate the correction technology, test modes and evaluate the results of the correction. It was found that an increase in diameter leads to a decrease in the endurance limit of structural steels. The loading scheme of the experimental sample is adopted – transverse bending with torsion. A semicircular notch in the sample was used to focus the fracture site, and the radius of the notch was calculated. The size of the sample tuck is determined by the formula based on the similarity criterion adopted in the statistical theory of similarity of fatigue failure of parts, proposed by V. P. Kogaev. The requirements for the roughness of the surface of a circular groove of at least Ra 0.16 are established. The need for control of the manufacturing technology of the experimental sample is noted. An experimental installation for testing flexural fatigue strength is proposed. A cone cartridge was used to securely fasten and prevent the sample from turning during the experiment. Experimental samples were used-models with deflection arrows of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm. The method and equipment for obtaining samples with the necessary deflection arrows have been determined. Diagrams of a model sample for testing cantilever bending with torsion, an experimental installation for testing model samples, bending to a given deflection arrow, and a model sample with a curved longitudinal axis are presented.

Social Workers’ Professional Failures as Perceived by Welfare Bureau Managers within Arab Society in Israel
 • Feb 28, 2024
 • The British Journal of Social Work
 • Ibrahim Mahajne + 1 more

Abstract Social workers’ professional failures are considered inevitable occurrences. However, virtually all research on professional failure management relates to the healthcare field. The scant literature on professional failure does not give much weight to the profound implications of context on professional functioning. This pioneer study illustrates how important it is to consider the context to understand the daily workplace occurrence of social workers’ professional failures. The research traced social workers’ professional failures as perceived by welfare bureaus managers. A phenomenological approach elicited data from semi-structured in-depth interviews with twenty Arab welfare bureaus managers in Israel. Findings indicated that the managers encountered a lot of ‘minor’ individual and collective failures in different dimensions, and understood failure as a transient episode, mostly trivial and understandable. The main criterion for failure was damage attributed to a particular intervention. Responsibility for failure was not usually seen as stemming from the social workers’ faulty professional-ethical considerations, rather it was attributed to factors associated with the establishment: lack of appropriate resources and non-culture-sensitive policies. Managers coped creatively with what they defined as failures, preserving their profession’s inalienable assets with a ‘non-confrontational’ policy while ensuring individual learning from the failure, to prevent future repetition.

Diagnosis of the type of delivery of pregnant women at Semen Padang Hospital Using the C4.5 Method
 • Feb 25, 2024
 • UNP Journal of Statistics and Data Science
 • Rama Novialdi + 3 more

ABSTRACT The health of the mother and fetus is very important, but there are many challenges and risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth. According to WHO, in 2020 there were 287,000 cases of women dying during pregnancy and childbirth. Causative factors that affect the type of delivery include the age of pregnant women, MGG, systole, diastole, and pulse. One method that can be used to group the types of childbirth of pregnant women is classification. C4.5 is one of the methods used in forming decision trees to produce decisions. The purpose of C4.5 is to obtain attributes that will be the main criteria in the classification. Based on optimal tree results, the attribute that is the main criterion in classifying the type of delivery of pregnant women who give birth by cesarean section and normal delivery at Semen Padang Hospital is MGG. Determination of classification results using confusion matrix resulted in an accuracy value of 74%, sensitivity of 80% to classify the type of delivery of pregnant women who gave birth caesarean, and specificity of 66.67% to classify the type of delivery of pregnant women who gave birth normally.

Factors impacting complementary feeding advice given by paediatricians in Cyprus.
 • Feb 23, 2024
 • European Journal of Public Health
 • Dona Hileti + 1 more

Complementary feeding has long-term effects on health but there is heterogeneity in recommendations across Europe. Recommendations include responsive feeding practices and nutritional needs but there is a debate in primary paediatricians as to which one should be the main criterion for complementary feeding. This pilot study investigated (i) the factors affecting the recommendations of paediatricians in Cyprus for starting complementary feeding, (ii) whether their main criterion is the developmental readiness or the nutritional needs of the infant and (iii) how this priority influences recommendations. The 11-item questionnaire was completed by 73 Cypriot paediatricians. Approximately 66% of paediatricians recommended starting complementary feeding between 5 and 6 months, 29% between 4 and 5 and 3% between 6 and 7 months. Predefined schemes were recommended by ∼25% of paediatricians, baby-led weaning by 14% and 58% of paediatricians recommended either modality depending on the family circumstances whilst 4% involve the mother in the decision process. Approximately 64% of paediatricians recommended the introduction of parent's diet after the first year of life. Approximately 55% of paediatricians chose developmental readiness and 45% nutritional needs of the infant as their primary criterion for starting complementary feeding. Paediatricians who prioritized developmental readiness were more likely to be younger, less likely to advice on meat quantity and less likely to follow good nutritional practice. The younger the paediatrician the more likely they are to prioritize developmental readiness over nutritional needs of the infant for complementary feeding. Paediatricians who prioritized developmental readiness were also less likely to provide nutritional advice.

 • Victoria N Abramova + 4 more

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine synechiae (Ascherman syndrome) is one of the fairly common causes of infertility. Despite a large number of clinical studies, there are still no effective methods of both prevention and treatment, which is one of the main causes of reproductive failures. The article discusses the experience of combined preimplantation preparation of patients with uterine factor infertility caused by intrauterine synechia. An assessment of the effectiveness of preparation for the in vitro fertilization procedure, with subendometrial use of platelet-rich autoplasma against the background of surgical, antibacterial and hormone therapy, is given. AIM: Evaluation of the effectiveness of complex preimplantation preparation of patients with uterine factor infertility caused by intrauterine synechia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study of the results of preparation for in vitro fertilization with thawed embryos of 30 women with infertility against the background of Asherman’s syndrome. Treatment: surgical (hysteroscopic adhesiolysis), antibiotic therapy (semisynthetic penicillin’s with clavulanic acid), hormonal support (conjugated estradiol valerate and micronized progesterone) and subendometrial administration of platelet-rich autoplasma. The main criterion for the effectiveness of treatment is the onset of biochemical and clinical pregnancy. RESULTS: The method of combined preimplantation preparation of infertile patients with intrauterine synechia showed high efficiency of the in vitro fertilization procedure: the onset of clinical pregnancy in 46.7% of women, live birth in 36.7%. CONCLUSIONS: A comprehensive method of preparation for in vitro fertilization of patients with intrauterine synechiae significantly increases the chances of successful embryo implantation during this procedure.

 • Alexander Buia + 31 more

Surgical site infections frequently occur after open abdominal surgery. Intraoperative wound irrigation as a preventive measure is a common practice worldwide, although evidence supporting this practice is lacking. To evaluate the preventive effect of intraoperative wound irrigation with polyhexanide solution. The Intraoperative Wound Irrigation to Prevent Surgical Site Infection After Laparotomy (IOWISI) trial was a multicenter, 3-armed, randomized clinical trial. Patients and outcome assessors were blinded to the intervention. The clinical trial was conducted in 12 university and general hospitals in Germany from September 2017 to December 2021 with 30-day follow-up. Adult patients undergoing laparotomy were eligible for inclusion. The main exclusion criteria were clean laparoscopic procedures and the inability to provide consent. Of 11 700 screened, 689 were included and 557 completed the trial; 689 were included in the intention-to-treat and safety analysis. Randomization was performed online (3:3:1 allocation) to polyhexanide 0.04%, saline, or no irrigation (control) of the operative wound before closure. The primary end point was surgical site infection within 30 postoperative days according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention definition. Among the 689 patients included, 402 were male and 287 were female. The median (range) age was 65.9 (18.5-94.9) years. Participants were randomized to either wound irrigation with polyhexanide (n = 292), saline (n = 295), or no irrigation (n = 102). The procedures were classified as clean contaminated in 92 cases (8%). The surgical site infection incidence was 11.8% overall (81 of 689), 10.6% in the polyhexanide arm (31 of 292), 12.5% in the saline arm (37 of 295), and 12.8% in the no irrigation arm (13 of 102). Irrigation with polyhexanide was not statistically superior to no irrigation or saline irrigation (hazard ratio [HR], 1.23; 95% CI, 0.64-2.36 vs HR, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.74-1.94; P = .47). The incidence of serious adverse events did not differ among the 3 groups. In this study, intraoperative wound irrigation with polyhexanide solution did not reduce surgical site infection incidence in clean-contaminated open abdominal surgical procedures compared to saline or no irrigation. More clinical trials are warranted to evaluate the potential benefit in contaminated and septic procedures, including the emergency setting. drks.de Identifier: DRKS00012251.

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies nickel compounds as Class Ⅰ carcinogens. International Labour Organization (ILO) also lists nickel compounds as carcinogenic factors of occupational cancer. At present, China is revising the Classification and Catalogue of Occupational Diseases, and cancer caused by nickel compounds may also be included in the statutory occupational diseases. The Diagnostic and Exposure Standards for Occupational Diseases published by ILO in 2022 discussed the pathogenic characteristics, occupational exposure, main health effects, diagnostic criteria and key preventive measures of nickel compounds in detail. This article mainly introduces its contents, in order to provid a basis for the formulation of relevant standards in China.
