A [Mn8] Defective Supertetrahedron T3 and Its Dimeric [Mn16] Analogue.

The initial use of 2-(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-diol (pypdH2) in Mn cluster chemistry has afforded two new mixed-valence polynuclear Mn clusters, namely, [Mn8Ο5(pypd)(hmp)3(O2CCMe3)8] (1) and [Mn16Ο10(N3)2(pypd)2{(py)2CO2}4(O2CEt)12] (2) (hmp- = deprotonated 2-hydroxymethylpyridine; (py)2CO2 2- = deprotonated gem-diol form of di-2-pyridyl ketone). Compound 1 features a novel [MnIII 7MnII(μ4-O)2(μ3-O)3(μ-OR)5]8+ structural core resembling a supertetrahedron T3, lacking two apexes, while complex 2 has a [MnIII 14MnII 2(μ4-O)4(μ3-O)6(μ-N3)2(μ3-OR)2(μ-OR)8]14+ core consisting of two [Mn8] subunits related to 1 and thus is a dimeric analogue of 1. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed the presence of dominant antiferromagentic exchange interactions between the Mn ions in complexes 1 and 2 and small ground state spin values for both compounds. Overall, this work highlights the capability of polyol-like chelates like pypdH2 to stabilize high nuclearity 3d metal clusters based on polynuclear building blocks.

Synthesis, general physicochemical behaviour and magnetic studies of the macrocyclic bis-pyridine derivatives [TTDPzM(py)2]·2H2O (M = MnII, CoII, NiII)

In our extensive work on phthalocyanine-like macrocycles carrying peripherally attached strongly electron-withdrawing 1,2,5-thia/selenodiazol rings we recently reported on the FeII species of formula [TTDPzFe(py)2].2H2O (TTDPz = tetrakis(thiadiazole)porphyrazinato dianion). The present work deals with the synthesis and extended physicochemical studies of the series of related macrocycles [TTDPzM(py)2].2H2O (M = MnII, CoII, NiII). The diffractograms of three solid samples of the NiII complex [TTDPzNi(py)2]·2H2O, obtained from different synthetic procedures, indicate that the species is reproducibly obtained. All three samples are isomorphous with each other as shown by their X-ray powder diffractograms. Based on the comparison of the IR spectra of [TTDPzNi(py)2].2H2O and the related desolvated [TTDPzNi], the IR absorption peaks belonging to the pyridine molecules could be identified. The systematic presence of the two water molecules in all three species suggests that forms of contact do exist in the form of hydrogen bonds between them and the S and N atoms present peripherally in the thiadiazole groups of the macrocyclic units. As regard to the elimination of water, the thermograms (in inert atmosphere in the range 25–600 °C) indicate in all cases that loss of water occurs below 100 °C but loss of pyridine occurs over a broad range 100–300 °C for the MnII and CoII species whereas for the NiII complex it takes place in the narrow range 200–220 °C. In relation to the parallel series of metallophthalocyanines, i.e. [PcM] (M = MnII, FeII, CoII), it is noted that the NiII analog has not been reported in the literature and in a direct experiment it has been proved that [PcNi] heated in pyridine is obtained unchanged, the different behavior for the NiII TTDPz derivative due to the electron withdrawing effect of the external thiadiazole substituents, which makes favorable axial pyridine coordination in the complex. Completely insoluble in water, the triad of TTDPz derivatives are extremely low-soluble in non-donor or low donor solvents. This precluded any attempt to isolate single crystals for single-crystal X-ray work. Their UV–visible spectra show essential similarities in whatever organic solvent is used with clearly positioned Soret (300–400 nm) and Q-band absorptions (630–650 nm). Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization studies reveal that the [TTDPzM(py)2].2H2O complexes all show paramagnetism with ground state spins of 3/2 (MnII), ½ (CoII) and 1 (NiII), supported by fitting the data to spin Hamiltonian formalism, vide infra. Comparisons are made with the magnetism of [PcM] analogues with key differences noted for M = NiII.

Large reversible magnetocaloric effect in rare-earth molybdate RE2(MoO4)3 (RE: Gd and Tb) compounds

We report on the synthesis, structural, DC magnetic susceptibility studies on Gd2(MoO4)3 and Tb2(MoO4)3 polycrystals, prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method. Temperature and magnetic field (H) dependent magnetization and heat capacity measurements have been carried out to estimate the isothermal magnetic-entropy change (−ΔSm) and adiabatic temperature change (ΔTadi) in both rare-earth molybdates. No obvious long-range magnetic ordering can be found down to 2 K in both studied compounds. The estimated maximum value of –ΔSm at 3.5 K for 70 kOe is 31.1 J kg−1 K−1 and 16.7 J kg−1 K−1 in Gd2(MoO4)3 and Tb2(MoO4)3, respectively. Further, the calculated total-adiabatic temperature change for Gd2(MoO4)3 was 12.8 K, and Tb2(MoO4)3 has shown 9.8 K. The difference in the observed magnetocaloric and adiabatic temperature responses of Tb2(MoO4)3 compared to Gd2(MoO4)3 could be attributed to the presence of orbital angular moment of Tb3+ ions and relatively low-value of magnetization. Both the systems show a large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) (−ΔSm ∼ 12 J kg−1 K−1) even in low applied H (<20 kOe) attainable by a permanent magnet. Large magnetocaloric behaviour of Gd2(MoO4)3 and Tb2(MoO4)3 systems at a moderate field change along with very low electrical conductivity and the absence of thermal and magnetic field hysteresis in magnetization make them conducive to their use as promising magnetic refrigerants in the vicinity of liquid-helium temperatures.

Synergistic effects of Li-based ferrite and graphene oxide in microwave absorption applications

The successful fabrication of composites consisting of ferrites with a composition of Li0.4Mg0.25Zn0.25Fe2.2O4 and Graphene oxide was carried out using the ultra-sonication technique. The current study examined the impact of graphene oxide in spinel ferrite employing X-ray diffraction, dielectric, and magnetic susceptibility studies. The X-ray diffraction investigation confirmed the spinel phase formation in ferrite and graphene oxide synthesis. The measured range for the size of crystallites was found to be between 48.43 and 30.07 nm. The DC resistivity of cubic ferrite at room temperature was determined to be 1.715 ×1010 ohm-cm by a two-probe approach. Furthermore, it was observed that the resistivity fell significantly as the content of graphene oxide increased. The dielectric constant exhibited behavior consistency with the Maxwell-Wagner phenomenon of interfacial polarization. The rise in graphene oxide content in ferrite results in high AC conductivity of composites due to the relatively large value of conductivity of graphene oxide and the improved charge hopping mechanism. The magnetic susceptibility of all the samples demonstrated a progressive decline as the temperature increased, which can be attributed to the disruption of spin alignment at the Curie temperature. The observed Curie temperature of all samples was 413–473 K. Integrating spinel ferrite with Graphene oxide has significantly improved the magneto-electrical characteristics, indicating potential applications in supercapacitors, high-frequency electromagnetic devices, and microwave absorption.

New paleomagnetic data from the sedimentary cover of the Tandilia System: Further geodynamic or geomagnetic complexities in the Late Ediacaran

Anomalous paleomagnetic data have been found worldwide during the Ediacaran period, giving rise to several non-actualistic hypothesis. In order to get more information about this period, paleomagnetic, magnetic fabric and rock magnetic studies were carried out in the Avellaneda Formation (∼570–560 Ma) from two drill cores of the Alicia quarry in the Olavarría area of the Tandilia System, in the Río de la Plata craton (Argentina). Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility studies indicate a pre-tectonic origin for the magnetic fabric of this Formation. Rock magnetic studies suggest the presence of magnetite and hematite in different proportions as the main ferromagnetic minerals carrying the remanence. After stepwise thermal demagnetization, two different characteristic remanence directions were obtained for the same unit, one corresponding to the marls (“b1”) of the lower section of the Avellaneda Formation, and the other from the claystones (“b2”) of the upper section of this unit. These results were combined with the remanence directions obtained by Franceschinis et al. (2022) for the same unit at La Cabañita quarry, located 10 km away. This procedure allows the calculation of two paleomagnetic poles for the Avellaneda Formation. The AV1 pole is located at: 2.0° S, 311.1° E, A95: 5.0°, N: 58 while the AV2 pole is at: 3.3° N, 348.9° E, A95: 11.7°, N: 7. These results confirms that the Rio de la Plata craton also presents anomalous paleomagnetic data during the Ediacaran, implying extremely fast movements in very short periods of time. This can be interpreted as evidence of two inertial interchange true polar wander events during this time, as was already proposed by other authors. An alternative possibility suggests a non-actualistic behaviour of the Earth Magnetic Field, switching from axial to equatorial positions, with an intermediate stable position between them. The likelihood and implications of these two hypotheses is discussed.

Assessing the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of VO(IV), Cr(III), Cu(II)-metformin-schiff-base's complexes enhanced by gold nanoparticles

A new series of VO(IV), Cr(III), and Cu(II) complexes have been synthesized by condensation of metformin with β-diketones (acetylacetone, benzoylacetone, dibenzoylmethane) in the presence of metal salts. The elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, conductivity assessments, Infra-Red, UV–visible spectroscopy measurements, SEM, XRD, ESR, GCMS–, DTA, and DTG were used to characterize the novel compounds. The results show that every complex has a metal: ligand ratio of 1:1. The complexes exhibit distorted tetrahedral structural geometry for Cu(II), square pyramidal and octahedral geometry for VO(IV), and octahedral geometry for Cr(III), according to their electronic absorption spectra and magnetic susceptibility studies. Using the computer program Expo2014, crystallographic parameters were estimated for the complexes. The outcomes show that every complex has triclinic crystal structures with the space group P-1, apart from complex [VOL1OSO3], which has a monoclinic structure with the P 1 2 1 space group. In contrast to the complex [VOL1OSO3], which includes monodentate sulfate, conductivity data, XRD, EDX, and GC–MS verified the purity and composition of the compounds being studied. IR data showed that the complexes Na.[VOL2O2SO2] and Na.[VOL3O2SO2] has bidentate chelating sulfate ion. TG, DTG, and DTA have all been used to investigate the complexes' thermal stabilities. Some Schiff-base metformin complexes under investigation had their biological activity evaluated both with and without the addition of AuNPs. Various bacteria and harmful fungi strains have been used to screen the antimicrobial activity. The findings indicate that only copper-loaded Schiff base complexes on AuNPs gave promising results versus Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Candida albicans. On human cell lines of breast cancer (MCF7) and cancer of the human liver (HEPG2), in vitro cytotoxic activity was tested. Results showed that vanadium benzoylacetone doped with gold nanoparticles, with an IC50 value of 7 µg/ml against the HEPG2 cell line and 9.8 against MCF7 has the most effective cytotoxic effect.

Multivariate analysis applied to X-ray fluorescence to assess soil contamination pathways: case studies of mass magnetic susceptibility in soils near abandoned coal and W/Sn mines

Determining the origin and pathways of contaminants in the natural environment is key to informing any mitigation process. The mass magnetic susceptibility of soils allows a rapid method to measure the concentration of magnetic minerals, derived from anthropogenic activities such as mining or industrial processes, i.e., smelting metals (technogenic origin), or from the local bedrock (of geogenic origin). This is especially effective when combined with rapid geochemical analyses of soils. The use of multivariate analysis (MVA) elucidates complex multiple-component relationships between soil geochemistry and magnetic susceptibility. In the case of soil mining sites, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopic data of soils contaminated by mine waste shows statistically significant relationships between magnetic susceptibility and some base metal species (e.g., Fe, Pb, Zn, etc.). Here, we show how qualitative and quantitative MVA methodologies can be used to assess soil contamination pathways using mass magnetic susceptibility and XRF spectra of soils near abandoned coal and W/Sn mines (NW Portugal). Principal component analysis (PCA) showed how the first two primary components (PC-1 + PC-2) explained 94% of the sample variability, grouped them according to their geochemistry and magnetic susceptibility in to geogenic and technogenic groups. Regression analyses showed a strong positive correlation (R2 > 0.95) between soil geochemistry and magnetic properties at the local scale. These parameters provided an insight into the multi-element variables that control magnetic susceptibility and indicated the possibility of efficient assessment of potentially contaminated sites through mass-specific soil magnetism.

Determining the Effects of Zero-Field Splitting and Magnetic Exchange in Dimeric Europium(II) Complexes.

Related BAP [BAP = bis(acyl)phosphide] and Acac (Acac = β-diketonate) molecules perform as robust supports for both lanthanide and actinide metals. Here, a molecular bimetallic Eu2+ complex was successfully targeted and isolated by employing sodium bis(mesitoyl)phosphide [Na(mesBAP)] in a salt metathesis with EuI2, producing [Eu(mesBAP)2(et2o)]2 (et2o = metal-coordinated diethyl ether). The corresponding Acac-Eu2+ complex was targeted using mesAcac- (1,3-dimesityl-1,3-propanedione), generating [Eu(mesAcac)2(et2o)]2. Both complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, IR, and NMR spectroscopies, and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility. [Eu(mesBAP)2(et2o)]2 was persistent under anaerobic, anhydrous conditions, whereas the analogous [Eu(mesAcac)2(et2o)]2 showed evidence of decomposition under identical conditions. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization studies of [Eu(mesBAP)2(et2o)]2 and [Eu(mesAcac)2(et2o)]2 were performed, resulting in similar magnetic exchange coupling values of Jex = -0.018 and -0.023 cm-1 and axial zero-field-splitting D values of -0.38 and -0.51 cm-1, respectively.

Fe2−xCuxSnS4: Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a series of disordered spinels

Quaternary chalcogenides of compositions Fe2−xCuxSnS4 (x = 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7) were synthesized at high temperature, 800 °C, in a sealed silica tube. All the compounds crystallized in the spinel structure type with cubic Fd−3 m space group. Both magnetic and nonmagnetic ions are disordered in these compounds with Fe/Sn occupies half of the octahedral voids while Fe/Cu occupies 1/8th of the tetrahedral voids as obtained from the Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data. XPS study indicates that Fe exists in both +2 and + 3 oxidation states while Cu, Sn and S adopt +1, +4 and −2 oxidation states, respectively. Magnetic susceptibility study suggests ferrimagnetic like ordering in Fe1.6Cu0.4SnS4 below 230 K and the ordering temperature gradually decreases from 230 K to about 120 K with increase in Cu substitution. As the amount of Cu(I) increases in Fe2−xCuxSnS4, the percentage of Fe(III) increases to balance the charge. The magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline Fe1.6Cu0.4SnS4 has been studied for their potential applications as magnetic refrigerant at cryogenic temperatures. With an applied magnetic field of 5 T, the maximum value of magnetic entropy change was found to be (Δ Sm) 0.4 Jkg−1K−1 with a relative cooling power (RCP) of 7 J kg−1. These values are very similar to the literature reported values for Fe based compounds. Further, manipulation at the Fe site may lead to enhancement of magnetocaloric effect for practical applications.

A Multi-Method Approach to Geophysical Imaging of a Composite Pluton in North Portugal

Potassium (K), thorium (Th), and uranium (U) are good markers of magmatic or alteration processes and the surface concentrations of these radioelements can be mapped at the regional or local scale through radiometric (gamma) surveys. In this study, a radiometric survey was performed in a post-orogenic pluton located in North Portugal, namely the Lamas de Olo Pluton, composed by three granitic facies. This pluton has already been intensively studied, including magnetic susceptibility, gravimetric, geochemical, and petrographic studies. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the radiometric data and combine them with other characteristics, such as magnetic susceptibility, and gravimetry, as well as to elucidate structures such as faults and fractures, outline geological boundaries, and identify alteration zones within various granites of the pluton. The radiometric approach reveals the spatial distribution of radioelements, offering a more distinct portrayal of the geology in the studied area. The radioactive heat production rate was calculated for the studied pluton, showing that the mean value is 4.09 µW m−3, surpassing the known mean values for granites. Our study highlights that radiometric measurements unveil compositional variations within granitic pluton and aid in identifying feeder zones. Furthermore, these measurements can be correlated with each type of granites, demonstrating associations with surface concentrations of K-Th-U. Our findings indicate a spatial alignment between the NE feeder root and a U-rich granite (Barragem granite), as evidenced by its elevated concentration of this radioelement. Conversely, the other root displays a notable relative concentration of Th, consistent with the Th-rich characteristics observed of the two other granites (Lamas de Olo and Alto dos Cabeços granites).

3-Phenoxybenzaldehyde and Glycine-Derived Schiff base M(II) Complexes: Synthesis, molecular Modeling, spectroscopic Exploration, and antimicrobial evaluation

This study synthesized a novel bidentate Schiff base known as 2-((3-phenoxybenzylidene)amino)acetic acid (HL) derived from glycine and 3-phenoxy benzaldehyde and its M(II) complexes (M = Co2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ & Zn2+) was prepared by combining the Schiff base (HL) and the metal acetates in a 1:2 ratio. The molecular structure of the Schiff base was confirmed using CHN analysis, mass, FT-IR, UV–Vis, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. The prepared complexes were analyzed using CHN analysis, mass, FT-IR, UV–Vis, molar conductivity studies, magnetic susceptibility studies, and ESR for Cu(II) complexes. Based on the analysis, square planar geometry is suggested for the Cu(II) & Ni(II) complexes and tetrahedral geometry for Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes. A preliminary in vitro antimicrobial investigation of the synthesized ligand and its related complexes has been performed. The M(II) complexes showed more potent antimicrobial activity than its Schiff base; in particular, the Cu(II) complex illustrated notable inhibitory effects. Molecular docking studies were conducted against CDK2 (PDB ID: 1B39), α-amylase (PDB ID: 4W93), and α-glucosidase (PDB ID: 3TOP). The Ligand HL demonstrated AutoDock/MM-GBSA binding energy values of −5.9 /-104 kcal mol−1 (CDK2), −6.6 /-134 kcal mol−1 (α-amylase), and −7.4/ −174.84 kcal mol−1 (α-glucosidase). The complexes exhibited MM-GBSA binding energy values within the range of −198.20 to −198.72 kcal mol−1 (CDK2), −250.00 to −250.02 kcal mol−1 (α-amylase), and −279.51 to −283.84 kcal mol−1 (α-glucosidase). The molecular docking results shed light on the potential of ligand HL and its metal complexes as promising candidates for further exploration in therapeutics, particularly in targeting CDK2 inhibition (anticancer) and α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition (antidiabetic).

Griffiths-like behavior and magnetocaloric properties of rare-earth silicide Tb2Co0.8Si3.2

Novel rare-earth silicide, Tb2Co0.8Si3.2 compound, crystallizes in Lu2CoGa3 structure, a distorted substitution variant of the AlB2 structure. The compound exhibits a complex magnetic state, with a ferromagnetic transition at 58 K, followed by successive antiferromagnetic transitions at 24 K and 8 K, respectively. Isothermal and magnetic hysteresis studies indicate the prominence of competing antiferro and ferromagnetic interactions in the compound. However, this does not lead to the formation of spin glass behavior, as confirmed by AC magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity studies. In the paramagnetic state, the short-range ferromagnetic ordering of cobalt creates a Griffiths-like anomaly that is suppressed at higher magnetic fields. Investigation of magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance properties identifies the compound as a conventional second-order magnetocaloric material with negative magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the determination of Landau coefficients and subsequent analysis indicate that the isothermal entropy change of the compound can be calculated from these coefficients.

The crystal structures and magnetic properties of YbMg0.75In1.25 and Yb6Mg6.41In5.59

Abstract The quasi-binary system YbMg2-YbIn2 was studied around the equiatomic composition. In contrast to the ordered rare earth (RE) phases REMgIn (ZrNiAl type), ytterbium forms phases with different structures and pronounced Mg/In mixing (M sites). The structures of YbMg0.75In1.25 (CaLiSn type, P3m1, a = 501.95(7), c = 1087.3(2) pm, wR2 = 0.0490, 790 F 2 values, 32 variables) and Yb6Mg6.41In5.59 (Yb6Ir5Ga7 type, P63/mcm, a = 1060.77(14), c = 970.27(16) pm, wR2 = 0.0484, 701 F 2 values, 26 variables) were refined from single-crystal X-ray diffractometer data. YbMg0.75In1.25 is an AlB2 superstructure with a tripling of the subcell. The magnesium and indium atoms form three differently puckered layers of M 6 hexagons. The Yb6Mg6.41In5.59 structure is derived from the hexagonal Laves phase YbMg2 (MgZn2 type, P63/mmc). A klassengleiche symmetry reduction leads to four crystallographically independent M sites for the rows of corner- and face-sharing tetrahedra which allow a composition close to the equiatomic one. The M–M distances in both structures cover the broad range from 289 to 331 pm, comparable to the sums of the covalent radii. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility studies of the polycrystalline YbMg0.75In1.25 and Yb12Mg13In11 samples indicate Pauli paramagnetism with room temperature values of 2.8(1) × 10−3 emu mol−1 (YbMg0.75In1.25) and 5.2(1) × 10−3 emu mol−1 (Yb12Mg13In11).

Mixed‐Valence Manganese Carboxylate Clusters, {MnIII6MnII4}, {MnIII7MnII5Na}, and {MnIII7MnII5}, Derived from the Combined Use of Di‐2‐pyridyl Ketone with Selected Aliphatic Diols

AbstractThree new polynuclear clusters with the formulae [Mn10O4(OH)(OMe){(py)2C(O)2}2{(py)2C(OMe)(O)}4(MeCO2)6](ClO4)2 (1), Na[Mn12O2(OH)3(OMe){(py)2C(O)2}6{(py)2C(OH)(O)}2(MeCO2)2(H2O)10](ClO4)8 (2) and [Mn12O4(OH)2{(py)2C(O)2}6{(py)2C(OMe)(O)}(MeCO2)3(NO3)3(H2O)(DMF)2](NO3)2 (3) were prepared from the combination of di‐2‐pyridyl ketone, (py)2CO, with the aliphatic diols (1,3‐propanediol (pdH2) or 1,4‐butanediol (1,4‐bdH2)) in Mn carboxylate chemistry. The reported compounds do not include the aliphatic diols employed in this reaction scheme; however, their use is essential for the formation of 1–3. The crystal structures of 1–3 are based on multilayer cores which, to our knowledge, are reported for the first time in Mn cluster chemistry. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies showed the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions within 1–3. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed the presence of out‐of‐phase signals below 3.0 K for 2 and 3 indicating the slow relaxation of the magnetization vector, characteristic of single‐molecule magnets; the Ueff value of 2 was found to be 23 K and the preexponential factor τ0 ~7.6×10−9 s.

A new family of heterometallic [Cu6M4] (M = Gd, Tb, Dy and Y) clusters derived from the combined use of selected pyridyl poly-alcohol ligands.

The combined use of 2-(2-pyridyl)-1,3-propane-diol (pypdH2) and 2-hydroxymethyl-2-(2-pyridyl)-1,3-propane-diol (pyptH3) in Cu2+/4f chemistry has afforded a new family of isostructural [Cu6M4(pypt)4(pypdH)4(NO3)8] [M = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3), and Y (4)] complexes. These compounds are based on an unprecedented three-layered symmetric [Cu6M4(μ-OR)16]8+ structural core, formed from the connection of the metal ions by bridging alkoxide arms of the organic ligands. Direct current magnetic susceptibility studies for complexes 1-3 revealed the presence of dominant ferromagnetic exchange interactions, suggesting the existence of large spin ground state values. Alternating current magnetic studies indicate the presence of slow-magnetic relaxation in 1-3.

Approaching the 1000 K energy barrier in high coordinate lanthanide single-ion magnets: Increasing Ueff in the [Dy(Tp2-py)F]+ moiety with tetrahydrofuran.

Using the existing architecture of [Dy(Tp2-py)F]+ that supports a terminal Dy-F bond, the synthesis and isolation of [Dy(Tp2-py)F(THF)2](PF6) and its diamagnetic yttrium analogue have been achieved. Alternating current magnetic susceptibility studies show an increased effective energy barrier of Ueff = 661(6) cm-1 (951(8) K), the highest yet reported for a high coordinate (n > 8) lanthanide single-ion magnet.

Bifunctional heterobimetallic 3d-4f [Co(II)-RE, RE = Dy, Eu, and Y] ionic complexes: modulation of the magnetic-luminescence behaviour.

This work reports the engineering and functional properties of an emerging class of heterobimetallic 3d-4f ionic complexes designed with cobalt and rare-earth (RE) metals. We present a comprehensive examination of the structural, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties of the heterobimetallic ionic complexes with the general formula [Co(hfa)3]-[RE(hfa)2tetraglyme]+ (RE = Dy, Eu, and Y), where the metal centres are coordinated by hexafluoroacetylacetonate (Hhfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione), β-diketone and tetraglyme (2,5,8,11,14-pentaoxapentadecane) polyether. Structural analysis reveals an octahedral coordination geometry enveloping the cobalt(II) centre, characterized by inherent symmetry properties consistent across the derivatives, while a capped square-antiprism coordination polyhedron is observed for the RE ions. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirms the constancy of the electronic structure of the cobalt(II) moiety and the significant contribution of the lanthanide ions to the magnetic properties of the compounds. The non-trivial single-ion magnetic properties of cobalt(II), dysprosium(III), and europium(III) centres, and the effect of their interactions are investigated by a detailed static and dynamic magnetic susceptibility study. Moreover, optical analyses have been carried out showing the π-π* intraligand (IL) transition of the β-diketonate ligand and the d-d cobalt(II) transitions. Luminescence characterization of dysprosium(III) and europium(III) derivatives exhibits their characteristic emission bands, indicative of the unique photophysical properties conferred by the lanthanide ions. Thermal studies using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) reveal good thermal stability and volatility properties, underscoring the interesting nature of these ionic complexes for potential deposition on suitable substrates. In summary, these heterobimetallic complexes show intriguing optical and magnetic properties with potential implications across diverse scientific disciplines, including molecular magnetism, optoelectronics, and materials science.

Anticancer and Antioxidant Activities of Biologically Active Newly Synthesized α-Amino Acid-Dithiocarbamate Complexes of Some Bivalent Metals

The present study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of L-proline dithiocarbamate and its L-prodtc metal(II) (M = Ni2+, Cu2+ and Se2+) complexes. The ligand was synthesized in the presence of an alkali through the reaction of one mole of carbon disulphide and L-proline in ethanol under ice cold condition. The solubility of this ligand in the media is attributed to its high hygroscopic character and therefore, its metal(II) complexes were synthesized using a freshly prepared ligand. The characterization of the metal(II) complexes were carried out by molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, elemental analysis, TGA/DTA, mass, IR, Raman, UV-Visible, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic studies. The biological activity of all the metal(II) complexes has been examined using an inhibition method for bacteria and pathogenic fungus, which will assess their possible antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer activities and anti-inflammatory. It has been observed that Se(L-Prodtc)2 exhibits anticancer activity against breast cancer cells (MCF7) and also observed that antioxidant activity of Se(L-Prodtc)2 is more as compared to standard BHT, whereas Cu(L-Prodtc)2 complex shows appreciable anti-inflammatory activity.

Copper ferrite obtaining from microelectronics waste

Relevance. The need to develop new methods for metal waste disposal. This direction, with the participation of various intensifying influences, refers to resource-saving, technological, minimizing the volume of capital costs for raw materials, production and subsequent sale. Aim. To obtain copper ferrite from iron and copper waste of microelectronics. Copper ferrite is a useful and highly demanded product in this branch of domestic industry, especially now, when many sanctions have been imposed on our country, including in terms of microelectronics. To study its magnetic properties and draw a conclusion about the possibility of its application. Objects. Samples of iron and copper waste in the form of plates, wire and shavings. Methods. Volumetric analysis, electron microscopy, X-ray phase analysis, study of magnetic susceptibility. Results. The authors have produced finely dispersed iron (III) oxide from iron-containing microelectronics waste. This oxide is used in electrical engineering as part of high-voltage resistors for grounding the neutral of networks, lithium-ion batteries, as a carrier of analog and digital information. In the radio engineering industry it is used as part of low-voltage resistors, high-frequency chokes, small-sized pulse transformers. The authors produced finely dispersed copper (II) oxide from copper-containing waste. This oxide is used in production of phosphors and dry batteries – in batteries with liquid cells as a cathode, with lithium as an anode and dioxalane mixed with lithium perchlorate as an electrolyte. In addition, it finds application as a p-type semiconductor, since it has a narrow bandgap of 1.2 eV, and manufacturing photovoltaic cells in solar panels. Copper ferrite was synthesized from the obtained oxides by sintering. Rings made of such alloy serve as a core in transformers. The part increases the magnetic field strength by several thousand times, making the devices transmit more power than they could with a non-ferrite core. Ferrite ring cores are found not only in transformers, but also in other electronics (e.g. magnetic memory).

Magnetization reversal processes of nanostructured PrFeB alloys

The paper considers the high-coercivity state of the melt-spun PrFeB alloys with different phase composition: the main Pr2Fe14B phase grains separated by the paramagnetic layers, single-phase state (Pr2Fe14B grains only), and combination of Pr2Fe14B and α-Fe phase grains. The phase composition and microstructure of the alloys, as well as their magnetic properties in the temperature range of 2–300 K are given. To establish the prevailing mechanism of the high-coercivity state, magnetometric techniques were used, including the study of the reversible magnetic susceptibility, and simulations by the finite difference method. The simulations of the magnetization reversal of these alloys demonstrate the complexity of this processes, which go beyond simple nucleation or pinning, and cannot be described in the framework of the Kneller-Hawig model. Models of magnetization reversal of the alloys under study are proposed. The presence and composition of the intergranular layer has a significant effect on the mechanism of the high-coercivity state.
