The Adult Life Cycle of Poor African American Fathers

This article is based on the qualitative findings of a 4-year study of 150 adult African American men who are non-custodial fathers. Using social constructionist and ecological frameworks, issues of individual, personality and family development are explored and implications for micro and macro social work practice are discussed.

Assessing the Integrity of Community Organization and Administration Content in Field Practice

The effort to ensure that students acquire knowledge and skills in macro social work practice requires considerable attention in the face of stronger interests in micro practice on the part of students and their field instructors. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the field component at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to provide learning opportunities for the development of macro practice skills and knowledge. Over 85% of the student respondents had responsibility for at least one macro practice activity during their first field placement. Although a majority of the macro practice assignments were related to organizational interventions and very few to community interventions, the study provides guidance for improving the teamwork of faculty and field instructors in an articulated approach to field learning.

Commitment to Social Change:

The purpose of this paper is to examine commitment as it relates to the pursuit of social change. This is done through the analysis of accounts by veterans of their involvement in feminist social movement organizations (FSMOs). They convey their stories of commitment to the feminist movement with language that one might use to describe an intimate relationship. The collective voice suggests considerable sacrifice and dedication. It also reveals a deep belief that they were betrayed by movement beneficiaries. This sense of betrayal is rooted in the expectation that movement commitment would increase as attacks by the New Right on the FSMOs rose. The paper concludes with discussion of the relevancy of studying commitment to social change for both micro and macro social work theory and practice.

INCORPORATING RESEARCH INTO MACRO SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE AND EDUCATION

Macro social work practice involves initiating, implementing, and assessing social service and social action policies, programs, and organizations. Each of these practice "stages" has unique information requirements. In this paper, the authors describe these information requirements and show how they can be fulfilled through the use of some simple research concepts and techniques. They conclude with a brief discussion of strategies for introducing these research concepts and techniques into social work education.

Macro Social Work: A Practice in Search of Some Theory

The author examines the different approaches to social work practice and education which have evolved, focusing in particular upon tendencies toward differentiation or consolidation and their implications for the development of a unified social work theory. As a means of assessing recent theoretical initiatives, he considers a typology of social work activities based upon the notion of micro and macro social systems and interpersonal and technical activities. He concludes that unlike micro social work little attention has been given to elaborating an integrated macro social work theory. A synthesis of micro and macro theories that will lead to a conceptually unified profession will have to await the maturation of theory on the macro side.
