The Relationship between Future Wilderness and in Situ and Ex Situ Plant Conservation

Extrapolation of current (1993) rates of wilderness destruction indicate that no significant areas are likely to remain by the year 2300. This likely trend is reinforced by the current continued growth of the human population. The concepts of in situ and ex situ plant species conservation are examined in the context of wilderness loss and practical consequences are discussed including the concept of ad valorem species conservation.

Depleting Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of Jharkhand State

The newly created state of Jharkhand is very rich in the plant wealth and other natural resources. The area has maxium concentration of tribal population in North India. The forests have several medicinal and aromatic plants that are being used as a source of medicines in various systems viz., Ayurveda, Siddha Unani and Homoeopathy. Due to continous habitat destruction fragmentation of forests, urbanization coupled with population explosion and agricultural growth, there is unprecedented pressure on plants wealth culminating into loss of biodiversity at an alarming rate. The authors have regularly been surveying the state for the last fifteen years. Based on the field survey literature and screening ca 24 medicinal plants whose populations have been continously depleting are identified and reported in the present communication.

Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia Mimicking a Mass Lesion: An Unusual Case

Cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP) is less common interstitial lung disease with varying clinical picture. It can be misdiagnosed as lung cancer as COP usually presents with malaise, fever, weight loss, and myalgia, which overlap with clinical features of lung cancer. Here, we present a rare case of a 68-year-old male smoker admitted with cough, hemoptysis, arthralgia, fever, and chest pain. On chest X-ray, unilateral homogenous opacity was seen. Blood culture and sputum for Ziehl–Neelsen stain were negative. High-resolution computed tomography chest revealed consolidation in middle and lower zone of the left lung with ground-glass opacity with centrilobular nodules. Bronchoalveolar lavage specimen was negative for bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and atypical cells. Transbronchial lung biopsy showed evidence of OP. The patient responded well to steroids.

It is well known that the study of historical literature is impeded by the incom- plete transmission of sources: due to a century-long loss of sources, inevitably, a large number of texts is no longer known to us. As such, our current perspective on the literary diversity of the past is probably underestimating the actual wealth of texts that once existed. Statistical methods from eco-diversity can assist us in adjusting this esti- mate in a quantitative and precise manner. Applied to Middle Dutch chivalric epics, these methods suggest that prior estimates of text loss may be too conservative: the methods estimate that up to half of the original texts have been lost (and possibly many more).

Вітамін-D-статус у пацієнтів із транзиторними втратами свідомості нетравматичного генезу (огляд літератури)

У статті поданий аналіз новітніх наукових досягнень із вивчення проблематики вітамін-D-статусу в пацієнтів із різними етіопатогенетичними варіантами транзиторних втрат свідомості нетравматичного генезу. Результати останніх наукових досліджень дають змогу припустити, що вітамін D може справляти опосередковану, а в деяких випадках і пряму дію в патогенезі транзиторних втрат свідомості. Дані щодо причинно-наслідкового зв’язку між низьким статусом вітаміну D і синкопальними станами є змішаними, суперечливими й неоднозначними, що великою мірою пов’язано із використанням різних доз вітаміну, його вихідною концентрацією, тривалістю терапії, генетичними відмінностями рецептора вітаміну D, різним віком, фізичними параметрами обстежуваних, прийомом ліків, особливостями харчування з використанням спеціальних добавок, відмінностями у фізичній активності, особливостями клімату, порою року тощо. До сьогодні немає переконливих даних про користь застосування вітаміну D у лікуванні та профілактиці синкопе. Більшість досліджень мають спостережний характер та стосуються в основному дорослої популяції, а тому перспективним напрямком розвитку науки в цій галузі є проведення рандомізованих контрольованих досліджень з акцентуацією на дитяче населення.

Fast Adaptive Augmented Lagrangian Digital Image Correlation

Digital image correlation (DIC) is a powerful experimental technique for measuring full-field displacement and strain. The basic idea of the method is to compare images of an object decorated with a speckle pattern before and after deformation in order to compute the displacement and strain fields. Local Subset DIC and finite element-based Global DIC are two widely used image matching methods; however there are some drawbacks to these methods. In Local Subset DIC, the computed displacement field may not satisfy compatibility, and the deformation gradient may be noisy, especially when the subset size is small. Global DIC incorporates displacement compatibility, but can be computationally expensive. In this thesis, we propose a new method, the augmented-Lagrangian digital image correlation (ALDIC), that combines the advantages of both the local (fast and in parallel) and global (compatible) methods. We demonstrate that ALDIC has higher accuracy and behaves more robustly compared to both Local Subset DIC and Global DIC. DIC requires a large number of high resolution images, which imposes significant needs on data storage and transmission. We combined DIC algorithms with image compression techniques and show that it is possible to obtain accurate displace- ment and strain fields with only 5 % of the original image size. We studied two compression techniques – discrete cosine transform (DCT) and wavelet transform, and three DIC algorithms – Local Subset DIC, Global DIC and our newly proposed augmented Lagrangian DIC (ALDIC). We found the Local Subset DIC leads to the largest errors and ALDIC to the smallest when compressed images are used. We also found wavelet-based image compression introduces less error compared to DCT image compression. To further speed up and improve the accuracy of DIC algorithms, especially in the study of complex heterogeneous strain fields at various length scales, we apply an adaptive finite element mesh to DIC methods. We develop a new h-adaptive technique and apply it to ALDIC. We show that this adaptive mesh ALDIC algorithm significantly decreases computation time with no loss (and some gain) in accuracy.

Does Globalization Mitigate Income Inequality

Bechtel (2012) showed that economic anxiety accompanying loss of household income and purchasing power has harmful effects on consumer demand, voter turnout, institutional trust, societal satisfaction, and well being. This sequel shows that economic anxiety is driven by income inequality, which mimics the detrimental effects of economic anxiety. The strongest shock of income inequality is its incitement of societal dissatisfaction. It is demonstrated that globalization reduces income inequality, alleviating economic anxiety and its negative impacts. These effects were found in a large cross-national sample from the fifth round of the European Social Survey. They demonstrate the value of using survey responses as micro outcomes for assessing macro-economic phenomena.

Effect of Uhrf1 on intestinal development.

As a best-characterized epigenetic modification, DNA methylation plays an important role in mammalian development. Uhrf1 is a critical epigenetic regulator that can bind to hemimethylated DNA and recruit DNA methyltransferase 1 to maintain DNA methylation. So far, the role of Uhrf1-mediated DNA methylation in intestinal development is still unknown. In order to investigate the impact of Uhrf1 deletion in intestinal development, we have successfully constructed the epithelial-specific Uhrf1 knockout mouse model. After Uhrf1 ablation, we found the mutant mice exhibited abnormal epithlial structure with less and shorter villi and shrinked crypts compared with wild type mice via hematoxylin-eosin staining. Further analysis showed that Uhrf1 deletion in the intestinal epithelium significantly decreased the cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis. In addition, Uhrf1 deletion inhibited the normal epithelial differentiation and the expression of intestinal stem cell marker genes. Preliminary mechanism study revealed that loss of Uhrf1 caused global DNA hypomethylation which induced DNA damage in crypt cells. Taken together, our data suggested that DNA methylation mediated by Uhrf1 is vital for the normal intestinal development. Our results enriched the in vivo role of Uhrf1 and laid the foundation for further epigenetic regulatory mechanism exploration.

On the Estimation of Parameters and Reliability Functions of a New Two-Parameter Lifetime Distribution based on Type II Censoring

We consider here the generalization of the Bilal distribution proposed by Abd-Elrahman (2017) by zeroing in on two measures of reliability, R(t) and P, based on type II censoring. We obtain point estimators namely, λ and θ, of the above said distribution, when both parameters of the distribution are unknown. Maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs), Bayes estimators (BEs) and Lindley’s approximation for the Bayes estimators are proposed. By using independent noninformative type of priors for the unknown parameters Bayes estimators are derived. Although the proposed estimators cannot be expressed in closed forms, these can be easily obtained through the use of numerical procedures. The performance of these estimators is studied on the basis of their mean squared error (MSE), computed separately under LINEX loss function (LLF) and squared error loss function (SELF) through Monte-Carlo simulation technique.

Influence of particle size and total organic carbon on heavy metal concentrations in sediments of Lake Baringo, Kenya

Heavy metals impair water and sediment quality and thus, can cause adverse impacts on aquatic organisms especially when they exceed the recommended threshold levels. Heavy metal concentrations in water and sediments are a reflection of the anthropogenic activities on the watershed as well as the geology of the area. Metal concentrations and subsequently their bioavailability are influenced by the sediment characteristics including particle size and total organic carbon among others. This study determined the concentration of heavy metals - cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) in the sediments in relation to grain size and total organic carbon in Lake Baringo. Samples were collected from five sites using a grab sampler and analyzed for total heavy metals using AAS. Particle size classification was done using the sieve method, while organic carbon (OC) was estimated using the Loss on Ignition (L.O.I) method. One way ANOVA revealed significant difference in mean Cu concentrations amongst the sampling sites at P<0.05 (F (4, 14) =6.945 p=0.01). However, there was no significant differences in the levels of Cd and Hg, that is, F (4, 14) =0.03, p= 1.0 and F (4, 14) = 0.36 p=0.83 respectively. However, there was no significant difference in the levels of Cd and Hg. Sites with higher percentages of silt and clay recorded a higher concentration of Cd and Cu as well as percentage of TOC. The results indicated the pollution of the lake by heavy metals presented an ecological and a human health concern requiring monitoring.
