Genome-wide association study of fitness traits in local Alpine cattle breeds: insights into longevity, fertility, and udder health.
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • Animal : an international journal of animal bioscience
  • A Oian + 5 more

In recent decades, genetic research in cattle has largely prioritised cosmopolitan breeds and production traits, often overlooking functional and fitness-related characteristics such as longevity, fertility, and udder health. These fitness traits, although critical for animal welfare and sustainable farming, are challenging to improve due to their low heritability and complex genetic background. This study investigates the genomic architecture of three key fitness traits: longevity (LONG), fertility (measured as days open, DO), and udder health (somatic cell score, SCS)-in two local dual-purpose breeds, Alpine Grey (AG) and Rendena (RE), using a genome-wide association study (GWAS). For AG breed, 2745 genotyped animals were considered and 2251 from the RE breed. For LONG, 37053 and 9782 phenotypic records were, in AG and RE, respectively, while 30316 (AG) and 19822 (RE) for DO; and 113297 (RE) and 792921 (AG) for both SCS and milk yield. In GWAS, pseudophenotypes were utilised to address data imbalance. A total of 744 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with the three traits were identified, which were associated with 26 annotated genes explaining more than 1% of the additive genetic variance. Candidate genes significantly associated with target traits include CPEB4 (LONG in RE, SCS in both breeds), DSC2 (DO in AG, SCS in RE), LCORL (LONG and SCS in RE), PRMT8 (LONG in both breeds, MY in RE), RAPGEF6 (LONG in AG), TEAD4 (MY in RE), TSPAN9 (LONG in both), and XKR4 (DO and SCS in RE). These genes participate in vital biological functions such as spermatogenesis, mitochondrial regulation, cellular signalling, and tissue integrity, underlining their relevance in fertility, animal health, and productivity. Notably, several genes identified as significant in our study have previously been associated with both milk and beef production traits in the literature, suggesting that key functional traits related to dual-purpose performance remain detectable despite ongoing selection primarily focused on milk yield. This versatility is essential for their continued adaptability to diverse farming systems and market needs. Overall, the findings provide insights into genomic regions associated with fitness traits in local cattle breeds, emphasizing the value of integrating these traits into breeding programmes. The identification of genetic markers offers valuable opportunities to improve selection strategies that promote animal welfare and sustainable production, reinforcing the role of genetic diversity in dual-purpose local breeds within modern agriculture.

Changes over time in the genetic parameters of milk production and functional traits in a Holstein population
  • Sep 17, 2025
  • Cogent Food & Agriculture
  • Juana Lucia Chuma-Alvarez + 5 more

Changes over time in the genetic parameters for milk yield (MY), fat yield (FY), protein yield (PY), fat content (FC), protein content (PC), longevity (LONG), somatic cell score (SCS), calving interval (CI) and age at first calving (AFC) were estimated with information from records of 335,155 pedigreed Chilean Holstein cows with first calvings from 1998 to 2017, using multi-trait linear mixed models within four 5-year periods. Additive genetic variances for MY, FY and PY decreased by 45, 33 and 34% between the first and last periods, increased by 21% for FC and remained constant for PC. Environmental variances for MY, FY, PY, FC and PC increased by 14, 40, 34, 74 and 20%. Heritabilities for MY, FY, PY and FC declined by 43, 44, 44 and 16%. In functional traits, genetic variances and heritabilities remained unchanged, while a decrease over time was observed in environmental variances for SCS, CI and AFC. Genetic and environmental correlations between MY, FY and PY decreased over time, while environmental correlations of FY and LONG with SCS and LONG with CI increased. These findings underscore the importance of changes in genetic and environmental parameters over time for important traits in selected populations of dairy cattle.

Wartime Social Protection and Human Security
  • Jun 15, 2025
  • Revista de Cercetare si Interventie Sociala
  • Serhii Piddubnyi + 4 more

In the current conditions of war, social policy and security are becoming key priorities for Ukraine, where the armed conflict is exacerbating social inequality, impoverishment, and infrastructure destruction. The relevance of the study is stipulated by the need to adapt social mechanisms to military realities, ensure the protection of vulnerable groups and assess the impact of the crisis on the welfare of the population through the Human Development Index (HDI). The purpose of the article is to analyze the conceptual foundations of quality social policy and the formation of social security in the context of war in Ukraine, and to develop recommendations for institutionalizing social stability in society. The study is based on a quantitative analysis of the HDI using linear regression, which takes into account the indices of longevity (LEI), education (EI) and income (II), with a dummy variable for the wartime period. The article uses the least squares (OLS) method, comparative analysis of social planning, and a structural-functional approach to assessing the effectiveness of social security at the state level. A model with a correction variable reflecting the negative impact of the war is developed and a number of institutional measures aimed at strengthening social protection and adapting policy in the context of military operations are proposed. Future research could focus on analyzing the long-term effects of war on social security, evaluating the effectiveness of international assistance, and developing a post-war strategy for social recovery.

A META-REGRESSION AND BAYESIAN REGRESSION FRAMEWORK FOR COMBINING RESULTS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND SURVEYS OF PEOPLE’S LIFESTYLES TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON WHAT INTERVENTIONS WILL HELP THEM LIVE LONGER AND HEALTHIER
  • Jan 1, 2023
  • International Journal of Social Science and Economic Research
  • John Leddo

There has been increasing research into interventions that people can do in areas of diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, sleep, and stress management to improve their health and even slow down or reverse their aging process. Challenges that people face applying these research findings to their daily lives include the fact that this research is evolving and not yet “settled science,” most research looks at single interventions in order to maintain experimental control (whereas people are interested in maximizing their benefits by adopting multiple interventions), and different interventions or combinations thereof may be differentially effective for different people. The present paper presents a methodology that uses meta-regression and Bayesian regression to combine results from the scientific literature and surveys of people’s lifestyles into an overall predictive model that can make recommendations to people based on their individual characteristics and lifestyles as to what interventions are likely to produces the largest gains in wellness and lifespan extension.

Evaluation of relative economic value of performance traits in Sahiwal cattle
  • Oct 11, 2022
  • The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences
  • Poonam Ratwan + 2 more

Estimation of economic values is essential to decide the monetary importance of traits to be incorporated in breeding programs. The present study was conducted to estimate the relative economic value of first lactation traits, viz. 305-day milk yield (305DMY), average daily milk yield (ADMY), calving to first insemination interval (CFI), days open (DO), pregnancy rate (PR) and longevity (LNG) in Sahiwal cattle. Data spanning over duration of 29 years pertaining to production, reproduction and longevity of Sahiwal cattle kept at ICAR-NDRI herd were utilized. Averages of first lactation traits, viz. 305DMY, ADMY, CFI, DO, PR and LNG were obtained as 1822.59 kg, 6.62 kg/day, 85.56 days, 150.48 days, 38.00% and 2711.95 days, respectively with lactation length of 303.02 days in Sahiwal cattle. Expenses involved for different groups of animals for five years (2012-2016) were considered for appraising relative economic values of above-mentioned performance traits. Major expenses considered were per day cost of feeding, treatment, labour and artificial insemination for each animal. Cost of production of one kg milk was calculated as ` 23.68 which was the economic value of 305DMY and ADMY. The per unit expenses for traits CFI, DO, PR and LNG were ` 156.79, 156.79, 86.65, and 141.21, respectively in Sahiwal cattle. Relative economic values were estimated as 1, 1, -6.62, -6.62, 3.66 and 5.96 for 305DMY, ADMY, CFI, DO, PR and LNG, respectively. Relative economic values estimated in the present study will be helpful for constructing selection indices for genetic progress of Sahiwal cattle.

  • May 22, 2021
  • Comunicata Scientiae
  • Jean Carlo Baudraz De Paula + 6 more

Strelitzias are tropical plants that have shown great interest in the market and can be used in landscaping in tropical floral arrangements. Aiming to extend its postharvest life, the objective of the work was to evaluate different concentrations of the commercial product based on carnauba wax in the postharvest longevity of Strelitzia juncea and Strelitzia reginae leaves. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with five treatments and six repetitions, with one leaf per repetition for each species. The concentrations used were: 0% (control), 2%, 20%, 40% and 100%. The loss of leaf mass (%) and the visual quality of the leaves were evaluated through the criterion of notes, in addition to making use of anatomical analyzes of the stomatal structures of the leaves through scanning microscopy. The loss of mass was reduced with the increase of the wax concentration, however, high doses provided increased loss. The use of carnauba wax proved efficient at concentrations of 20 and 40%, maintaining the commercial quality of the leaves of S. reginae and S. juncea until the 24th day, while in the control treatment, the leaves maintained a commercial pattern until the 16th for S. reginae and 18th day for S. juncea. The deposition of wax in the stomatal structures may have influenced the loss of mass of both species as observed by scanning microscopy.

Transformations of Egyptian-Sudanese relations (2011-2019( A study in the most prominent issues of cooperation and difference
  • Apr 14, 2021
  • Tikrit Journal For Political Science
  • Yasser Ahmed Khalaf

The Egyptian-Sudanese relations have distinct qualities that make them completely different from the relations of either country with the other countries as a whole, because what is available to them in terms of joint ties is rarely found between any of the two countries worldwide, and perhaps the source of that distinction and uniqueness in the Egyptian-Sudanese relations is that it overlaps Multi-level and links. In spite of this overlap, the Egyptian-Sudanese relations witnessed many transformations from the period of the 25 January 2011 revolution until the year 2019, a continuous swing as it periodically undergoes tides and ups and downs, as it develops to its best levels and then the tension in it reaches the point of rupture, which earned it the characteristic of Tactical relationships for transient temporary accounts and not a strategy characterized by longevity or length of time in their projects and fateful issues, but there are factors that have been limiting these relationships and always pushing them towards tension and then retreat and sometimes to discontinuity, especially the water factor and border issues.

"‘노화’와 ‘장생’을 바라보는 도교적 시선 (視線)의 복합성과 그 함의"
  • Mar 31, 2021
  • The Critical Review of Religion and Culture
  • Soo Been Choi

  • Reproduction in Domestic Animals
  • Poonam Ratwan + 2 more

An attempt was made for the first time in India to develop the performance indices for quantifying the relative emphasis to be given to production, reproduction, health and longevity traits for selection and genetic improvement of Sahiwal cattle in a sustainable manner. The study was conducted using information related to various production, reproduction, health and longevity traits spread over a period of 29years in Sahiwal cattle. Using income and expenditure method, the relative economic values for 305days milk yield (305DMY), average daily milk yield (ADMY), calving to first insemination interval (CFI), days open (DO) and longevity (LNG) were estimated as 1, 1, -6.62, -6.62 and 5.96 in Sahiwal cattle. A total of three performance indices were constructed using three-trait combination, that is production, reproduction and longevity before and after excluding the days suffered by the animals. Correlation between the aggregate genotype and index (RIH ) was computed to determine the accuracy of each performance index, and based on highest RIH value, best performance index was identified for selection of Sahiwal cattle. Developed indices were further assessed for robustness by increasing the relative economic values of the traits by 25% and 50%. The performance index (305DMY, DO and LNG) was found to be the best index before as well as after excluding days suffered by the animals, but in later case emphasis to be given to different traits was found to be more balanced. The best index indicated that about 47, 42 and 11% relative emphasis to be assigned to 305days milk yield, days open and longevity for selection of Sahiwal animals for sustainable genetic improvement.

In the Libraries, the librarians act as curators, appraisers and administrators of the material of the Collections, in order to provide access and achieve its preservation for the next generations. This is an urgent need especially in cases where the material they manage falls into the category of rare material, cultural property, movable cultural heritage, irreplaceable and unique material. The object of this research is the material of the Department of Special and Rare Collections (Closed Collections) of Libraries, which is governed by its own Policy. It aims to investigate the existing conditions and practices followed in accordance with the Collection Policy of the Department of Rare and Special Collections in three Greek Libraries: a) the National Library of Greece, b) the Gennadius Library and c) the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation. The items of the Special Collection Libraries require special handling and they are selected according to a Prioritization System of their value and significance, following specific criteria assessment. The Evaluation System depends on the Library’s type, on the broader objectives of the Foundation / Organization that it owns and manages, on the spaces it has, on the community it serves, on the staff and its budget. The data gathering and the study of the Special and Rare Collections Departments of the three exemplary Libraries was based on field research, using the following tools: structured questionnaires, interview and on-site observation. To conclude, the processing of the research data, shows that all three Libraries have knowledge of their material according to their evaluation assessment (which has already been done or is currently taking place). It also proves, after their critical comparison with the international Bibliographic data (manuals, articles, standards, legislation, regulations, guidelines, etc.), that a common goal, which seems to run through all management methods and services to the patrons, is the longevity of the material and the minimization of wear from use to get it available for the next generations. At the same time, the aim is to balance this book-central system with a more controlled and extroverted policy.

  • Quang Minh Dinh + 2 more

Glossogobius aureus is an important commercial fish for food supply and has been caught increasingly, but data on its population biology is limited. The present study was carried out along coastlines from Soc Trang to Bac Lieu, southern Vietnam to contribute new information on the biological characteristics of G. aureus population. Data analysis of length-frequency distribution of 666 individuals showed that the equation of von Bertalanffy curve of this species was . The species displayed 4.47 y longevity and 2.75 in the growth performance. The length-converted catch curve analysis showed that the fishing, natural and total mortalities were 2.73 yr-1, 1.52 yr-1 and 4.25 yr-1 respectively and fish exploitation rate was 0.64. There was one recruitment peak in July and the analyses of relative yield-per-recruit and biomass-per-recruit gave Emax=0.408, E0.1=0.284 and E0.5=0.404. This goby is potentially an aquaculture species due to its high growth rate. The fish stock has been overfished, so the gill net mesh size should be increased and fish should not be caught during the recruitment period for sustainable management.

Bionomics of Anomala dimidiata Hope. (Coleoptera: Rutelinae)–A Devastating Agri-Horticultural Pest in Western Himalayas
  • Nov 30, 2020
  • SRI JNPG COLLEGE REVELATION A JOURNAL OF POPULAR SCIENCE
  • Nagesh Kumar Shah

In Western Himalayas, Anomala dimidiata Hope. is a very important pest of agri-horticultural crops, forest trees, nurseries, and pasture lands. Its subterranean grubs feed on the tender roots of silvi-agri-horticultural plants. The adult beetles defoliate a number of fruit and forest trees. Under laboratory conditions, a female lays 12.5 ± 6.13 eggs in the soil, which hatch in 12.70 ± 1.41 days, during its life span. The grub stage lasts in 246.2 ± 13.07 days. Pupation takes place in the soil. Pupal stage lasts in 14 ± 1.54 days. The adult stage remains in the soil until the onset of rains. The beetles live for 25 to 84 days after their emergence from the soil. The female beetles live for 57.8 ± 14.79 days, while male 45.3 ± 13.54 days. Under laboratory conditions, the total duration from egg to adult stage took 251 to 298 days, with an average of 275.5 ± 15.63 days. Female beetles outnumbered males; the former constituted about 58 percent of the total population. The longevity of adults varied from 25 to 84 days. The longevity of male beetles ranges from 25 to 68 days with an average of 45.3 ± 13.54 days, while in the case of females, it ranges from 26 to 84 days with an average of 57.8 ± 14.79 days. The peak emergence period is the 2nd fortnight of June to the 2nd fortnight of July. The pests complete one generation in a year.
