From Risk to Recovery: A Systematic Literature Review of the Economics of Disasters in the Philippines
 • Jan 1, 2026
 • Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives
 • Allen Grace Sarmiento

This study systematically reviews the economics of disasters in the Philippines, synthesizing research from 2012 to 2023 to identify key themes and gaps in the literature on how recurring hazards affect economic outcomes. Using a structured literature search across leading academic databases, the review identifies 20 empirical studies on natural disasters, including typhoons, hydrometeorological, and geological events. The findings demonstrate that disasters have a substantial impact on national and local economies, notably through GDP losses, increased public spending, sector-specific disruptions, and the deepening of poverty, especially among vulnerable groups. Resilience and adaptive strategies, disaster financing, and recovery mechanisms emerge as critical themes in both the literature and policy recommendations. However, data fragmentation, particularly at the local level, and limited longitudinal analysis impede the development of targeted and inclusive interventions. The review stresses the need for more granular, region-specific studies and improved economic risk management in disaster-prone contexts. By integrating findings on direct and indirect impacts, from infrastructure losses to shifts in social welfare, the study provides actionable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to enhance Philippine disaster resilience and socioeconomic recovery, including the piloting and empirical evaluation of risk-transfer mechanisms, such as microinsurance, in high-risk regions.

ATLas Chronicles. Designing and Valorising an Italian Archive of Past Local TV Channels
 • Dec 31, 2025
 • VIEW Journal of European Television History and Culture
 • Luca Barra + 2 more

Establishing a first, pilot inventory of privately-owned local TV channels operating in Italy between 1976 and 1990 is the core aim of the ATLas – Atlas of Local Televisions project, a nationally-funded research currently encompassing four Italian universities, with the intent of driving attention on an often neglected area of both academic investigation and archival practice. The research focuses on a sample of five networks which operated in contrast to the national public service monopoly, with vibrant creative innovations and a distinct connection with territories and local economies. After a scientific overview of the project, this contribution will delve into the methodological challenges underlying the design of an open-access repository that hosts a selection of audiovisual fragments drawn from the channels’ native archives, now difficult or impossible to access, or archived following random or commercial criteria. Particular attention is paid to the process of inventory, indexing and generating metadata of the various collected sources, in an effort to maintain a balance between creative and historiographical instances, and to allow the development of dedicated digital exhibitions. With accounts referring to three case studies (Antenna 3, Sardegna 1, and TeleSanterno), the article shares and discusses some lessons learnt, as well as the main struggles (and possible biases) encountered through the analysis, highlighting the memorial and testimonial value of this area of media history.

The Impact of Live Houses on Local Economies: Evidence from Beijing
 • Dec 31, 2025
 • Advances in Economics, Management and Political Sciences
 • Yuanqing Liu

As urban economies in the post-pandemic era confront slowed growth and shifting consumption patterns, live houses, as small-scale music venues, have emerged as new nodes of experiential and community-oriented cultural consumption. While their cultural and social contributions have been widely studied, their role as an economic driver remains underexplored. This study investigates the impact of Chinas live house industry on local economic development, examining the mechanisms and determinants underlying these effects. Using a case study approach, we combine policy analysis, field observations, and secondary data from venue operations, audience behaviors, and platform activities. An Economic Impact Model and PESTEL analysis (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, and Legal factors) are employed to systematically capture the multi-dimensional influences on local economic growth. Our findings suggest that live houses not only stimulate cultural participation but also generate small-scale economic circulation across creative sectors. Different live houses exhibit complementary effects that are moderated by their micro-environments. The study highlights their potential as low-threshold incubators for emerging musicians and as vital infrastructure for resilient cultural economies, offering practical implications for urban governance and creative industry development.

Sport and Tourism Destination Development: Hunting in South Africa c.1890-1939
 • Dec 31, 2025
 • GeoSport for Society
 • Christian M Rogerson

Scholarship on sport and tourism can be enhanced by a tighter engagement with historical research. The novel contribution of this paper is to document the role of the sport of hunting as a niche for early tourism destination development using the case of South Africa. Beginning in the 1890s hunting as a form of consumptive wildlife tourism was promoted in South Africa mainly to British sports hunters. This form of tourism development in South Africa was only made possible following the restrictions introduced in the country both to regulate hunting and enact conservation measures to protect wildlife following the decimation of animal populations in previous years. It is argued hunting was only a small niche in the emergence of tourism in South Africa during the period 1890 to 1940. Nevertheless, for certain regions of the country the hunting of wildlife for sport constituted a significant element of the local tourism economy.

PREDICTORS OF DIGITAL MATURITY FOR ACCOMMODATION SMALL-AND MICRO ENTERPRISES: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
 • Dec 31, 2025
 • Geojournal of Tourism and Geosites
 • Vongani E Ntimane

Organisations wanting to stay competitive through digital transformation must demonstrate high digital maturity levels according to current market conditions. South African small and micro enterprises (SMEs) have the potential to make a significant contribution to the local economy; however, they face specific digital transformation challenges and opportunities that distinguish them from other businesses. The small accommodation sector faces challenges such as limited financial resources, which impact digital access, inadequate infrastructure, insufficiently skilled workers, and must navigate complicated regulatory frameworks. Digitalisation can transform SMEs by enabling market expansion, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and business stability, thereby becoming more sustainable and contributing to a competitive advantage, while also supporting local employment and economic growth. The research combines existing studies to determine which factors influence digital maturity levels in South African small and micro accommodation businesses. The researcher conducted a systematic database search across Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and Sabinet for peer-reviewed articles published between January 2013 and May 2024. The PRISMA guidelines were used to evaluate studies after screening and extraction. The research included fourteen studies that met the established criteria. The findings revealed that SMEs achieve digital maturity through multiple interconnected elements, which include personal skills, organisational characteristics, and environmental and systemic factors. Digital maturity depends on the owner/manager's digital literacy, access to ICT infrastructure, organisational culture, financial capacity, external support networks, and regulatory environment. The development of digital maturity in South African accommodation SMEs requires programs that enhance digital competencies, build infrastructure, and create supportive regulatory frameworks. Financial backing, skill development, and information dissemination will enable stakeholders to harness digital transformation for enhanced sector competitiveness and inclusive economic expansion in South African tourism.

The Economic Value of Forest Ecosystem Services: Insights from Recreation and Ecotourism
 • Dec 31, 2025
 • Journal of Tropical Resources and Sustainable Science (JTRSS)
 • Mukrimah Abdullah + 4 more

Forests provide a variety of ecosystem services essential for human well-being, with recreation and ecotourism increasingly recognised as valuable non-market benefits. This study assesses the economic value of forest ecosystem services and visitors’ perceptions of recreational and conservation roles within two selected Eco Parks in Perak, Malaysia, namely Taman Eko-Rimba (TER) Lata Iskandar and TER Pasir Panjang. Using the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM), primary data were collected through structured surveys of 501 visitors (with a minimum of 250 respondents per site) to estimate their willingness to pay (WTP) for continued recreational access and enhanced conservation initiatives. The findings reveal that recreational and ecotourism services contribute significantly to the local economy through notable non-market values and individual WTP estimates. The OLS and Logistic regression models show mean WTP values of RM5.85 (OLS) and RM8.80 (Logit) for TER Lata Iskandar, and RM8.10 (OLS) and RM10.50 (Logit) for TER Pasir Panjang. Key significant determinants of WTP include income, education, visit frequency, visit duration, and repeat visitation, underscoring the influence of socio-economic capacity and behavioural factors on conservation support. Most visitors expressed strong support for conservation initiatives and recognised the importance of Eco Parks in providing environmental education, biodiversity protection, and community benefits. Positive visitor perceptions further reinforce the role of Eco Parks as essential assets for sustainable tourism and rural economic development. This study highlights the importance of integrating both economic valuation and public perception into forest management strategies to enhance conservation financing, improve visitor experiences, and support community livelihoods

Research on the Integration of Teaching and Research: Cultivation Path of the Transformation Ability of Teachers in Culture and Tourism
 • Dec 30, 2025
 • International Journal of Social Sciences and Public Administration
 • Haiming Chen

Under the policy framework of Guangdong Province's "High-Quality Development Project for Hundreds of Counties, Thousands of Towns, and Tens of Thousands of Villages" and the "Double Hundred Initiative" in higher education institutions, the implementation of rural revitalization strategies and the high-quality development of county-level cultural tourism economies have significantly increased demand for interdisciplinary talents with both theoretical depth and practical innovation capabilities. However, current applied undergraduate institutions' cultural tourism faculty face challenges such as theoretical-practical disconnection and weak research-to-education conversion capabilities, which hinder the efficiency of the "Double Hundred Initiative". Taking Zhaoqing University as a case study, this research establishes an "Integration of Research and Teaching" model to explore pathways for cultivating faculty's research-to-education conversion capabilities: breaking the inertia of "research-heavy but teaching-light" through a "mutually recognized" system for teaching-research integration; promoting bidirectional convergence between industrial practice and research topics, as well as transforming research outcomes into teaching resources; and building collaborative innovation platforms for teachers and students to form a closed-loop chain of "industrial practice → research topics → teaching content → innovation and entrepreneurship projects". This model significantly enhances faculty's research capabilities and students' innovation and entrepreneurship skills, providing replicable experiences for applied undergraduate institutions to serve the high-quality development of local cultural tourism economies.

British Metalware Exports and US Plantation Slavery during the Nineteenth Century
 • Dec 25, 2025
 • Slavery & Abolition
 • Tobias Gardner

ABSTRACT The role of external influences on the evolution of US slavery are understudied in New Histories of Capitalism (NHC). This article establishes the important Transatlantic impact of British manufacturing on American enslavement. It focuses on how metalware exports – tools, cutlery, and steel – from Sheffield and Birmingham catered to nineteenth-century plantation markets, especially in the US South. Bringing together business papers, customs records, newspapers and pamphlets from across the Atlantic, this piece reconstructs the multifaceted and collaborative nature of British plantation exports. It argues that the export of plantation metalware generated rich commercial networks and thrived from a vibrant market culture. Merchants and manufacturers in Birmingham and Sheffield cooperated in their production of plantation metalware, which faced its competition from nascent cutlers and tool makers from Germany before the industrial ascendancy of the Northern states. These goods were significant to both local economy and national exports, influencing social discourse, the cultures of who bought them and the lives of those who were subjected to use them. By bridging NHC with the historiography of British industrialization and slavery, this article uncovers how provincial manufacturing engaged with Transatlantic slavery outside of Britain’s imperial boundaries and long after British emancipation in the 1830s.

Transmission mechanisms of the Merah Putih Village cooperative's multiplier effect on the local economy: A conceptual analysis
 • Dec 24, 2025
 • Priviet Social Sciences Journal
 • Daniel Simamora

The Merah Putih Village Cooperative (KDMP) program is a strategic program initiated by the Indonesian Government to accelerate economic development starting from the village level, aligned with the national long-term development plan agenda. Although this program has significant potential for economic impact, a fundamental understanding of its transmission mechanisms to the local economy remains limited. This study aims to analyze and formulate a conceptual model that maps the multiplier effect transmission mechanisms generated by the KDMP. Using a qualitative method through a systematic literature review, this study identifies and synthesizes various pathways of cooperative economic impact on the local economy. The study results show that KDMP, with its business model, creates multiplier effects through three primary transmission pathways. First, the input provision and consumption. The second is financial intermediation and investment, and the third is value chain aggregation and integration. These pathways collectively generate reinforcing direct, indirect, and induced multiplier effects. This study also formulates a conceptual framework that can serve as an analytical tool for policymakers to design effective support interventions and as a foundation for future research to measure the actual magnitude of the KDMP’s multiplier effect.

ANALISIS POTENSI PENGEMBANGAN KAWASAN STRATEGIS BERDASARKAN PEMETAAN PASAR TRADISIONAL DAN MODERN DI KABUPATEN BOGOR
 • Dec 24, 2025
 • Creative Research Journal
 • Fahmi Iqbal Firdaus + 3 more

The selection of strategic potential for the development of a region is highly dependent on the dynamics of the local economy. One of the key factors in strengthening the regional economy is the presence of traditional and modern markets. However, the existence of these markets can often cause overlapping coverage of modern and traditional retail services, resulting in an uncompetitive business environment that only benefits one party. This study aims to map the current conditions of traditional and modern markets in Bogor Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The analysis not only provides market mapping but also becomes a reference for selecting strategic areas in Bogor Regency. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with an approach that combines the Average Nearest Neighbor (ANN) and Panel Spatial techniques. The results of the analysis identified 4 out of 40 sub-districts, namely Cariu District, Tanjung Sari District, Rancabungur District, and Tenjolaya District as recommendations for developing strategic areas for the Trade sector in Bogor Regency. However, further mapping is needed regarding traditional markets and minimarkets in Bogor Regency, both those that are already operating and those that are not. This aims to ensure more equitable market services throughout Bogor Regency. And there needs to be a policy, considering the number of minimarkets that exceed the calculated capacity, it would be better if the granting of business permits was more selective so that a competitive and healthy business climate is created and there needs to be support for traditional retail business actors to increase their competitiveness, including facilitating partnership efforts with modern retailers.

 • Serap Özdemir Güzel + 3 more

Tourism taxation provides governments with a means of funding to help support public investment for tourism development. This study reveals the impact of tax types directly related to tourism—especially accommodation and air passenger taxes—on economic outcomes. This study employed a qualitative method based on a comprehensive literature review to conceptually analyze taxes in the tourism industry. It has been observed that these taxes provide significant financial contributions to local economies, but they have also been found to have potentially negative effects on the competitiveness of tourist destinations. One of the findings of this study is that tourism taxes should be used in areas such as environmental protection and public infrastructure development and that such uses can increase tourists’ support for the tax. A comparative analysis of the tax types across the top ten tourist-hosting countries reveals significant differences in tax rates and indirect taxes in the tourism sector and findings show that tourism taxation strategies should be designed and implemented effectively. Cite this article as: Uzun Kocamış, T., Uzut, İ., Özdemir Güzel, S., & Kazan, G. (2025). A comparative analysis of taxation systems in the top ten tourist destinations worldwide. The coordination between digital economy policies and digital-real integration: pathways to advance digital economy development
 • Dec 22, 2025
 • Transforming Government: People, Process and Policy
 • Jingrui Zhao + 1 more

Purpose Against the backdrop of the profound transformations brought about by the digital economy, this study aims to examine whether the coordinated development of digital economy policies and digital-real integration constitutes a viable pathway to drive the growth of the digital economy. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on data spanning 2016 to 2022, this study employs a series of regression models to examine the impact of the coordination between digital economy policies and digital-real integration on digital economy development. Findings It is hard for prefecture-level and above cities in China to significantly expand the scale of their local digital economy merely by strengthening digital economy policies. Instead, the coordination between digital economy policies and digital-real integration constitutes an effective pathway to promote the development of the local digital economy, with the demand-pull effect, resource allocation effect and innovation incentive effect serving as its internal mechanisms. Threshold effect analysis reveals that moderate policy advancement stimulates the development of the digital economy, while excessive mismatch may incur institutional friction costs. Originality/value Utilizing enterprise-level data, this study achieves a more accurate measurement of the development scale of core industries in the digital economy across Chinese cities, thereby alleviating the potential overestimation issue prevalent in existing literature that relies on the entropy weight method or input-output method to estimate the scale of the digital economy development. In addition, this study further takes the perspective of digital-real integration as an innovative approach to addressing the mismatch between digital economy policies and their development.

Триггерные повестки сетевой коммуникации в регионах ресурсного типа
 • Dec 22, 2025
 • Virtual Communication and Social Networks
 • Elena Kranzeeva + 2 more

Today, digital environment often shapes public sentiment, even in local communities. In regions with recourse-based economies, network communications have become a major platform for public discontent. Users from the local community tend to cluster their opinions around sensitive issues. Trigger topics usually include the local economy, ecology, transportation, and urban infrastructure. As a result, they affect the local socio-political communication. The article describes the circulation of trigger agendas in the digital environment associated with mining regions, both in the Russian Federation and abroad. The qualitative case analysis made it possible to reconstruct the development logic of trigger situations and determine their digital spread rate factors. Based on domestic and international case studies, the authors revealed general patterns in the emergence of trigger situations and identified the factors that amplified their resonance in social media. Local trigger agendas were classified based on their relevance period, audience coverage, and substantive focus. While serving as indicators of public sentiment, local trigger agendas pose a risk to stable social communication if they receive no institutional response. The research results may be used to develop effective tools for monitoring network communications and preventing social tensions in local communities.

Slum management and urban poverty policy in Makassar city
 • Dec 19, 2025
 • International Journal of Public Policy and Administration Research
 • Sobirin Sobirin + 4 more

This research aims to analyze governance policies in handling slums and urban poverty in Makassar City. The method used in this study is a mixed method with a sequential explanatory approach through observation, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. In qualitative research, the focus is on understanding the process, meaning, and social dynamics in slum organization management policies and the implementation of poverty alleviation. The quantitative approach focuses on testing four variables, including other informal relationships, plans to return to their hometowns, life opportunities in the community, and challenges faced by residents and the government. The dependent variable is slum organizations, with a sample of 100 respondents. The quantitative analysis approach is carried out through multiple linear regression, with data processed using the SPSS application. The results of the qualitative analysis show that slum organization management and poverty alleviation planning policies in Makassar City are still dominated by a top-down approach from the government, while community participation through social, economic, and environmental approaches is not carried out through strengthening community social relations, empowering the local economy, and improving institutional governance. Meanwhile, the results of the quantitative analysis of the four variables show that informal relationships, plans to return to hometowns, opportunities for living in the community, and challenges faced by residents and the government have a significant influence on the existence of slums.

Analysis of the Profit Sharing System Between Ship Owners and Fishermen from an Islamic Economic Perspective in the Pangkajene
 • Dec 19, 2025
 • IJBAMS: International Journal of Business Accounting Management Social Science
 • Amelia Pratiwi

This study examines the practice of a profit-sharing system between boat owners and fishermen from the perspective of Islamic economic law and its implications for the economic well-being of both parties. This research uses a qualitative approach in the Pangkajene area, a coastal area in South Sulawesi, with a socio-economic perspective and is based on the Sharia Enterprise Theory, which integrates Islamic values into economic analysis, making it transcendental and human-oriented. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using data reduction, presentation, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The findings indicate that a 50:50 profit-sharing system is implemented between boat owners and fishermen. From an Islamic perspective, this practice falls under the mudharabah contract, which fulfills important elements such as contracting parties, the object of the contract, offer and acceptance, and the profit-sharing ratio. This system is considered fair because it does not disadvantage either party and reflects the principles of justice and cooperation. The application of the mudharabah contract in profit-sharing practices has been shown to improve the welfare of both fishermen and boat owners, while strengthening the role of boat owners as capital providers and drivers of the local economy.

Concrete block products are among the most widely used building materials in infrastructure development, both in urban and rural settings. However, the quality of concrete blocks produced by small-scale rural enterprises often does not meet established standards and is further constrained by limited marketing strategies. This community service program aims to improve the knowledge and skills of concrete block producers in the partner village through outreach, training, and mentoring focused on product quality improvement and marketing enhancement. The methods implemented include problem identification, educational sessions, hands-on training on standardized concrete block production, and digital-based marketing workshops. The results demonstrate an increase in participants’ knowledge, improved product quality characterized by denser and more uniform concrete blocks, and the development of more diverse marketing strategies. This program contributes to sustainable development by strengthening the local economy and creating employment opportunities.

 • Journal of Tourism and Interdiciplinary Studies
 • Elva Herlim + 1 more

Pasar Lama Tangerang (Tangerang's Old Market) is a culinary tourism destination with high appeal due to its culinary diversity and historical value. However, the increasing activity of tourists and vendors has created environmental issues that impact the comfort and image of the destination. The main problems that arise are air pollution caused by motorized vehicles passing through the culinary area and piles of garbage that have not been optimally handled. This study aims to analyze the environmental conditions in the culinary tourism area of Tangerang's Old Market and identify factors that influence the quality of the tourist experience and the sustainability of culinary businesses. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through observation, semi-structured interviews, and field documentation. Informants consisted of tourists, vendors, and area managers directly involved in culinary tourism activities. Data analysis was carried out through a process of reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions to describe the environmental conditions comprehensively. The results show that the existence of the Old Market culinary tourism area contributes positively to the local economy and increases the number of tourist visits. However, negative impacts such as traffic congestion, air pollution, and cleanliness issues remain major obstacles. Management efforts to limit vehicle traffic and schedule cleaning times have not been effective due to a lack of consistency and awareness among tourists and vendors. In conclusion, collaboration between management, vendors, and tourists is needed to maintain environmental quality through traffic control, improved sanitation facilities, and environmental awareness education to realize Pasar Lama as a sustainable culinary tourism destination.
