The Content and Administration of the Intermediate Course

THE various articles on pedagogical subjects published in these pages are not only of themselves interesting and profitable reading but tend to stimulate further discussion. As yet, however, none has appeared which deals primarily with the peculiar problems of the college intermediate course. Serving often as the key to further courses in German it must be so designed as to include translation, grammar, composition, Freie Reproduktion, outside reading, oral and aural training and finally discussion of the literary and ethical aspects of the subject matter. Thus the course presents the greatest complexity of problems and makes exacting demands upon patience and resourcefulness. By irony of fate also the registrants come with the most varied and unequal qualifications. It is the conviction of the present writer that if there is even a slight demand for it there should be offered by the department as a parallel to the regular intermediate course one in scientific and technical German to accommodate the growing number of students who desire only a reading knowledge of German for their scientific and medical work and who after absolving the intermediate year will definitely discontinue study in the German department. Such students can there be given the special material best suited to their needs and emphasis can be laid upon the development of an ability to read extensively by limiting the composition work to the translation into German of sentences based on the text. Since then the regular intermediate course must serve so manifold a purpose, the matter of economy of time and the problems of designing and administering the course are of unusual importance. To meet these requirements with reasonable success the instructor might request the students to furnish the following data:

Some Literary Aspects of the Absence of Tragedy in the Classical Sanskrit Drama

EVERYONE who is acquainted with Sanskrit dramatic literature is aware that one of the most striking characteristics of the so-called classical drama is the absence of a tragic ending. The discovery of the manuscripts of the thirteen plays attributed to Bhdsa proves that this was not true of the older dramas, as some of them are real tragedies. But this fact only makes more puzzling and more interesting the problem of the consistercy with which the later dramatists avoided the tragic ending. In a number of the later plays there are many distressing occurrences during the progress of the action, but there is never any tragedy in the sense of calamity which remains at the close of the last act. There are near approaches to this but the tragic outcome is always prevented by the timiely assistance of a friend or the intervention of the gods. As Dr. Lindenau has pointed out in his Bhdsa-Studien,1 there must have been known to Bhdsa a form of the Ndtya-Sastra older than the recension we have. In this older form the strict rules concerning the happy ending were probably lacking. In the Bhdrata known to us, however, and in other dramaturgical works, the rules on this point of avoiding an unhappy ending are very definite and they were very strictly followed by the classical dramatists. The text-books of dramaturgy, as we have them, in giving the different conclusions which a play might have, seem to make no provision for anything opposed to the ultimate happiness of the hero and heroine,2 and it is distinctly stated that the death of the hero or principal person should not occur anywhere in the play.3

IT is seldom that the Journal of an important Society so abounds with obituary notices of prominent contributors as the one now before us. The sad refrain of “In Memoriam” runs through but too many of the closing pages of the number, in affectionate remembrance of names which have been associated with the advancement of agricultural knowledge throughout a considerable part of this century. The late Charles Randell, of Chadbury, was essentially a farmer of the widest views and experience, and full of sympathy for scientific work. The late John Chalmers Morton, the late John Algernon Clarke, and the late John Coleman ranked among the most distinguished ornaments of the literary aspect of agriculture. The editor, remarking upon these losses, says: “It is a noteworthy but melancholy circumstance that, in the short space of six months, the three leading professional writers on agricultural subjects should have been gathered in by the Great Harvester.” We should be wanting in respect to pass over unnoticed these bereavements, and when we call to mind the very recent deaths of Dr. Voelcker and Mr. H. M. Jenkins, the late secretary and editor, we must admit that this Society has sustained exceptionally heavy losses.
