Enhancing Educational Outcomes: A Case Study Exploration of AI Applications in the Public School Setting

Artificial intelligence (AI) is recognized globally as the science of making machines that can think deeply and comprehend things like humans. AI contributes a lot in different discipline areas, including education. This case study examines public school teachers’ AI tools utilized as part of their pedagogy, its impact from the lens of teachers and learners, and how teachers overcome the challenges they face in using AI tools. Eleven (11) public school teachers participated in the study, utilizing a semi-structured interview guide to facilitate the data collection process. Using a thematic analysis, the study generates themes that serve as the answers to the inquiries. The study found that the participants utilized multiple AI tools for personalized learning, administration and instructional support, learning and literacy enhancement, and professional development. Also, participants believed that AI positively and negatively affected teachers and learners. These participants highlighted several difficulties that had negative consequences, even if AI tools had substantially contributed to their line of work. Ultimately, the study concluded that AI can enhance educational outcomes when implemented thoughtfully and strategically. Future research should continue exploring best practices, ethical considerations, and long-term impacts to ensure that AI is a tool for empowerment rather than a source of inequality. The Department of Education can harness AI to create a more dynamic, efficient, student-centered learning environment by embracing innovation while prioritizing student needs.

Nursing Research Capacity-Building Programmes in AcuteCare Hospitals: A Scoping Review.

Research and evidence-based practice in nursing have a direct impact on the quality of care to patients. Its enactment in daily practice remains challenging, with nurses' insufficient research capacity and capability being one challenge, and the limited current state of knowledge another. To map the knowledge landscape around capacity-building programmes aiming to increase evidence-based nursing practice and research activity in acutecare hospitals. Scoping review using Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines. Articles from 2013 to 2023 were searched on PubMed, CINAHL, Medline/OVID, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science. Two researchers screened their eligibility independently. To be eligible, studies needed to focus on nursing/midwifery in acute care settings, address research capacity-building practices and be either an empirical, review or theoretical publication. Data were extracted in a structured format and synthesised narratively. Twenty-four articles were included, consisting of 12 empirical, 6 reviews and 6 non-data-based articles. Our analysis identified two dimensions of research capacity: (1) individual research capability and (2) organisational research capacity, each influenced by various determinants. Findings suggest that four key elements are required to build a research capacity programme: (1) context assessment, (2) multilevel leadership and management engagement, (3) programme tailored to context and (4) clear outcome indicators. We found nursing research capacity programmes lacked clear definitions and a consensus on a conceptual framework. This review systematically synthesised the knowledge landscape on nursing research capacity building programmes in acute care hospitals, bringing clarity regarding concepts, dimensions, determinants and structural key elements. The conceptual model developed through this review encourages comprehensive and comparable research capacity-building programmes, which can accelerate enhancement of research skills, literacy, activities and evidence-based practice among nurses, thereby improving quality of care and patient outcomes. No patient or public contribution.

The Fit Body Democratised: Fitness Literacy as Biohacking on YouTube

Despite the excellent health care of modern times, lifestyle-related illnesses are increasing at a startling rate. Contemporary society contributes to behaviours such as poor nutrition, inactivity, poor sleep and excessive stress. However, exercise has been proven to reduce the chances of health problems and more information about ways to improve the quality of one’s lifestyle is readily available through the Internet. The impact that biohacking YouTube videos have on shaping the knowledge and fitness of the general public is examined. It is argued that this form of literacy enables corporeal control and transformation and that the digital platform contributes to do-it-yourself healthcare. A parallel is drawn between the historical impact of the development of the printing press on public literacy, and the effect of social media on improving fitness literacy. Top-performing fitness channels were analysed to determine the impact of biohacking media on YouTube. While user engagement on popular fitness videos reflected different degrees of understanding of fitness practices, analysis of user engagement clearly revealed aspects of increased fitness literacy in public discourse on YouTube. It is concluded that YouTube stimulates the enhancement of audience fitness literacy, thereby influencing do-it-yourself healthcare of the lay public.

Farmers’ Perspectives on Agricultural Marketing Information in Developing Countries: The Case of Tanzania

Marketing information enhances farmer’s decision to increase production and productivity of agricultural commodities. This paper examines farmers’ perspectives on agricultural marketing information in developing countries, with a case study focusing on three districts in Tanzania. Data were obtained from a survey conducted on 291 maize farmers in the three districts namely Arusha (103 farmers), Njombe (100 farmers) and Kongwa (88 farmers), selected from three regions in Tanzania Mainland. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the percentage distributions of the farmers based on socio-economic characteristics and Likert scale ratings of the farmers’ levels of agreement with the debriefing questions constructed to evaluate their perceptions. The analysis of the socio-economic variables of the farmers suggests male dominance in maize farming, predominant youthful farming demographics, predominantly large household Size, and predominance of low-level educational backgrounds among maize farmers in the study areas. The results of the socio-economic characteristics underscore the importance of targeted policies to support maize farmers, focusing on education, youth engagement, and household resource management. The overall result of farmers’ perceptions of agricultural marketing information indicates a widespread agreement across districts highlighting the shared challenges and priorities among maize farmers in Tanzania, particularly indicating that farmers recognize the benefits of agricultural services and understand the importance of communication infrastructure for economic development. The study thus, recommends establishment of local marketing information centers to reduce costs and time associated with gathering market information, enhancement of digital literacy to train farmers, and collaboration with critical stakeholders; such as government, private sector, and non-profits organizations to fund and sustain marketing information infrastructure for farmers. Investments in communication and marketing infrastructure will bridge information gaps, enhance market access, and ultimately drive economic development among maize farmers. This structured approach will not only improve maize farmers’ productivity but also contribute to broader rural development goals.

The Alternative Learning System (ALS) program plays a crucial role in enhancing the literacy among persons deprived of liberty (PDLs). This initiative not only addresses educational gaps but also fosters personal growth and social reintegration. There have been various studies that looked at the effectiveness of different approaches and methodologies in improving the literacy of ALS students. However, there is a dearth of studies investigating different effective approaches that are used for PDLs, especially those who are enrolled in ALS. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Project SCALE (Scaffolded Chart-Based Approach for Literacy Enhancement) in improving the literacy of incarcerated ALS students. Project SCALE is an innovative approach that incorporates interactive learning with focus on using scaffolded learning approach through structure table charts to equip the students with understanding of the components of English sentences and improve their writing skills. Project SCALE is innovative as it integrates different educational strategies to respond to the research problem. The integration of gradual scaffolding approach, structured chart usage, and interactive individual and group activities informs a comprehensive approach in teaching writing skills for the targeted students. This approach targeted both the desired specific learning outcomes and promoted collaboration among the students which is important in the students’ community life. The innovation was tested in three LS1 English competencies that were not mastered by the students after a quarter period. Using a quasi-experimental research design, data was gathered from the pre-test and post-test scores of the participants. Utilizing t-test, a significant difference is found comparing the means of the pre-test and post-test scores of the participants. The post-test scores are significantly higher than the pretest scores suggesting that the intervention was effective, so it is recommended that the project be widely adapted, and its concept be used for other ALS subjects.

This study examined the associations between health literacy and smoking behaviors among residents in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China, investigating both the impact of health literacy on smoking prevalence and intensity, and its potential role in smoking cessation interventions. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 2,948 male participants in the 2023 Health Literacy and Tobacco Use Surveillance Survey. We applied logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline analyses to assess the association between health literacy and smoking behaviors, adjusting for demographic characteristics, socioeconomic factors, and self-reported health status. Our findings indicate that higher levels of health literacy are associated with significantly lower rates of smoking (OR = 0.643, 95%CI = 0.528, 0.783) and daily cigarette consumption (β = -1.938, 95%CI = -3.649, -0.228). Non-smokers with higher health literacy were more likely to discourage others from smoking (OR = 1.464, 95%CI = 1.096, 1.955), underscoring health literacy's crucial role in smoking prevention and control. A nonlinear relationship between health literacy and smoking behavior was identified. Health literacy significantly influences smoking behavior, with higher literacy levels associated with reduced smoking prevalence and intensity. These findings support incorporating health literacy enhancement into comprehensive smoking cessation strategies.
