Is orthorexia nervosa a hidden threat impacting quality of life in IBS patients?

The potential link between functional gastrointestinal disorders and eating disorders has been reported recently. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between orthorexic tendencies and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-related quality of life in IBS patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 121 IBS patients. The data were collected using Orthorexia Nervosa-11 (ORTO-11) to assess orthorexic tendencies, Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life Scale (IBS-QoL) to measure quality of life, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptom Severity Score (IBS-SSS) to measure IBS symptoms. Food consumption record was taken to assess diet quality with the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015). The relationship between measured variables was assessed. The mean ORTO-11 score of the patients was 24.76 ± 3.99. Most patients had poor diet quality (52.00%). A moderate positive correlation was found between ORTO-11 and IBS-QoL (model 0, p < 0.005 and model 1, p < 0.001) and a strong negative correlation between IBS-SSS and IBS-QoL (p < 0.001). In conclusion, we can conclude that both altered IBS symptoms and orthorexic tendencies affect the quality of life of irritable bowel patients independently of each other. These findings provide valuable insights into the treatment of IBS and inform clinicians and researchers in the fields of gastroenterology, nutrition, psychiatry,and psychology.

Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review

Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects up to 20% of individuals worldwide, which leads to emotional distress and imposes significant healthcare expenses. Given the multifactorial nature of IBS symptoms and the absence of a cure, this review shed light on the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions in alleviating IBS symptoms and improving the quality of life in IBS patients. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed and Embase databases to identify Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) that examined the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions in IBS patients. The inclusion criteria were adults (over 18 years) previously diagnosed with IBS based on the ROME II/III/IV criteria. Results: A total of 213 references were identified in the databases. From these, nine RCTs involving 503 participants were included in this review. The interventions demonstrated improvements in IBS symptoms and quality of life. However, most of the studies were severely affected by bias. Discussion: Most RCTs demonstrated a reduction in symptoms and an improvement in quality of life. However, it is essential to acknowledge certain methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, lack of blinding, and high risk of bias, including selection and attrition. Conclusion: Despite acknowledged biases and restricted generalizability in the examined studies, it emphasizes the need for rigorous evidence to validate mindfulness effectiveness. Future research must prioritize bias reduction, include diverse populations, and broaden applicability. This review highlights the potential of mindfulness in relieving symptoms and enhancing the quality of life in IBS individuals.

Psychosocial and Sensory Factors Contribute to Self-Reported Pain and Quality of Life in Young Adults with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

AimsPsychosocial and sensory factors, including anxiety, depression, and pressure pain threshold have been used to cluster chronic symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study examined the contribution of psychosocial sensory factors on pain interference and quality of life (QOL) in this population. DesignWe performed a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from a randomized controlled trial. SettingsTwo gastrointestinal clinics, general communities, and two large campuses of a public university in the Northeastern United States. Participants/SubjectsEighty young adults with IBS aged 21 ± 2.57 years (76.25% female). MethodsDemographic and psychosocial factors including anxiety, depression, fatigue, cognition or general concerns, sleep disturbance, self-efficacy, coping, and food intake were measured as independent variables. Quantitative sensory testing was conducted to measure mechanical, thermal, and pressure pain thresholds. Self-reported pain measured by the brief pain inventory (BPI) and IBS-QOL were assessed as the outcome variables. Regression analysis and mediation analysis were conducted to determine the associated factors of IBS pain and QOL. ResultsAge, sex, and psychosocial factors including coping, self-efficacy, alcohol intake, mechanical pain sensitivity, and cold pain threshold were significantly associated with pain interference (all p < 0.05). Coping, and self-efficacy were significantly associated with IBS-QOL (all p < 0.05). In the mediation analysis, coping catastrophizing and self-efficacy were indirectly associated with IBS-QOL mediated by fatigue. ConclusionsPsychosocial factors including coping and self-efficacy, and quantitative sensory testing factors significantly correlate with self-reported pain and QOL among young adults with IBS. This preliminary research calls for further interventional studies that target personalized psychosocial and quantitative sensory factors to improve pain management and quality of life in IBS patients.

Use of Rifaximin in Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment

Introduction and purpose of the work: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects up to 10% of the population. The deterioration in health-related quality of life in IBS patients has been shown to be comparable to, and perhaps even more severe than, other serious chronic organic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, hypertension, and end-stage renal disease. The aim of the study is to present a new method of IBS treatment.State of knowledge: There are four main types of IBS: Constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C), Diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D), Fluctuating IBS (IBS-M), and the unclassified form of IBS (IBS-U). Disturbances in entero-brain interactions play a key role in its multifactorial etiopathogenesis. In patients with IBS, quantitative and qualitative disturbances in the composition of the intestinal microbiota can be found. So far, it has not been possible to clearly establish the cause of the disease, so there is no possibility of causal therapy and effective cure. Both non-pharmacological methods and drugs, including rifaximin α, have been used in IBS therapy.Summary: Rifaximin has a positive effect on the symptoms of IBS. In clinical trials conducted in patients with IBS, the use of rifaximin for 2 weeks was associated with a reduction in the severity of joint symptoms, bloating, abdominal pain and discomfort, and an improvement in stool consistency within 4 and 12 weeks, and did not increase the risk of side effects. In the forms: with predominant diarrhea, mixed and unclassified, in order to reduce the overall symptoms as well as reduce the severity of flatulence and / or diarrhea, a 14-day therapy with rifaximin α is recommended.

Fatigue in irritable bowel syndrome is associated with plasma levels of TNF-α and mesocorticolimbic connectivity

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a symptom-based disorder of gut-brain interactions generating abdominal pain. It is also associated with a vulnerability to develop extraintestinal symptoms, with fatigue often reported as one of the most disturbing. Fatigue is related to brain function and inflammation in several disorders, however, the mechanisms of such relations in IBS remain elusive. This study aimed to elucidate fatigue and its association with a resting state network of mesocorticolimbic regions of known importance in fatigue, and to explore the possible role of circulating TNF-α levels in IBS and healthy controls (HC). Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted in 88 IBS patients and 47 HC of similar age and gender to investigate functional connectivity between mesocorticolimbic regions. Further, fatigue impact on daily life and plasma levels of the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), of known relevance to immune activation in IBS, were also measured. The selected mesocorticolimbic regions indeed formed a functionally connected network in all participants. The nucleus accumbens (NAc), in particular, exhibited functional connectivity to all other regions of interest. In IBS, fatigue impact on daily life was negatively correlated with the connectivity between NAc and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex bilaterally (left p = 0.019; right p = 0.038, corrected for multiple comparisons), while in HC, fatigue impact on daily life was positively correlated to the connectivity between the right NAc and anterior middle insula in both hemispheres (left p = 0.009; right p = 0.011). We found significantly higher levels of TNF-α in IBS patients compared to HC (p = 0.001) as well as a positive correlation between TNF-α and fatigue impact on daily life in IBS patients (rho = 0.25, p = 0.02) but not in HC (rho = −0.13, p = 0.37). There was no association between functional connectivity in the mesocorticolimbic network and plasma levels of TNF-α in either group In summary, this novel multimodal study provides the first evidence that the vulnerability to fatigue in IBS is associated with connectivity within a mesocorticolimbic network as well as immune activation. These findings warrant further investigation, both peripherally and potentially with measurements of central immune activation as well.

Low-FODMAP Diet Is Associated With Improved Quality of Life in IBS Patients-A Prospective Observational Study.

The low fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide, monosaccharide, and polyol (FODMAP) diet is effectively manages irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. Long-term low-FODMAP studies rarely report quality of life (QoL). We aimed to determine the effect of low-FODMAP diet on long-term QoL, gastrointestinal (GI) and non-GI symptoms in IBS patients. A prospective observational study of IBS patients referred for low-FODMAP dietary advice was performed. The primary outcome of QoL and secondary outcomes of GI symptoms, anxiety/depression, fatigue, sleep quality, and happiness were obtained at baseline, 6 weeks (T6), and 6 months (T26). 111 patients were recruited. 91.0%, 71.6%, and 50.5% of participants completed baseline, T6, and T26 assessments, respectively. There were significant improvements in QoL from baseline at T6 and T26 (both P < 0.001). Significant reductions were seen in GI symptoms at T6 and T26 (both P < 0.001), fatigue at T6 and T26 (both P < 0.003), and anxiety at T6 and T26 (both P < 0.007), compared with baseline. A significant reduction was seen for depression (P<0.010) from baseline at T26, and a significant increase was seen for both happiness and vitality (both P < 0.04) from baseline at T26. There was a significant correlation between GI symptom response and change in QoL, anxiety, depression, and fatigue (all P < 0.034). Low-FODMAP diet was associated with improved long-term QoL and GI symptoms, reduced fatigue and anxiety/depression, and increased happiness and vitality. These data support a wider range of benefits for IBS patients consuming a low-FODMAP diet.

A Measure of Suffering in relation to Anxiety and Quality of Life in IBS Patients: Preliminary Results.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal (GI) disorder with a severe impact on quality of life (QoL). We explored the relationship of a visual measure of suffering, the PRISM-RII, with quality of life (QoL) and anxiety measures in IBS patients. Participants were 44 IBS patients who completed several questionnaires and kept a symptom diary for two weeks. The measures used were PRISM-RII (self-illness separation (SIS); illness perception measure (IPM)); IBS-36 (IBS health related QoL); SF-36 (physical and mental health related QoL); State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T); Visceral Sensitivity Index (VSI; GI-specific anxiety); and a symptom diary. SIS was negatively correlated to VSI, while IPM was negatively correlated to SIS and the physical component of SF-36 and positively to VSI and symptom severity. We found significant differences between participants who perceive their illness as small and those who perceive it as medium in SIS, symptom severity, VSI, and the mental component of SF-36. Participants, who perceived their illness as small, represented their illness as more distant, showed lower average symptom severity, and had lower GI-specific anxiety and higher QoL. The results indicate that IPM and SIS can be useful in discriminating patients with more prominent psychological difficulties and QoL impairment.

Exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy for irritable bowel syndrome. A single-case experimental design across 13 subjects

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a highly prevalent disorder with a significant impact on quality of life. The presence of psychological symptoms in IBS patients such as catastrophic worry and behavioral avoidance suggests the possible efficacy of cognitive behavioral interventions. Exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven to be a promising approach but has only been investigated in a few studies and mainly via the Internet. Therefore, the aims of this study were to extend and replicate previous findings and to evaluate whether an individual, face-to-face, exposure-based CBT leads to improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms, pain catastrophizing, avoidance behavior and quality of life in IBS patients. Thirteen patients with IBS according to Rome III criteria participated in a single-case experimental study using a five-week baseline and a subsequent twelve-session intervention phase focusing on psycho-education, mindfulness and in vivo exposure. Standardized measurement of gastrointestinal symptoms, pain catastrophizing, avoidance behavior and quality of life was conducted weekly during baseline as well as intervention phase and at six-month follow-up. Results showed that over 70% of patients improved significantly on gastrointestinal symptoms, pain catastrophizing, and quality of life. Effects on avoidance behavior were modest. These results strengthen and extend earlier findings and provide further support for the efficacy of exposure-based strategies for IBS.

Curcumin and Fennel Essential Oil Improve Symptoms and Quality of Life in Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) patients still require effective treatment. The anti-inflammatory property of curcumin and the antispasmodic and carminative effect of fennel suggests that combination of these nutraceutical compounds would be useful in functional bowel disorders including IBS. We assessed the efficacy and tolerability of a combination of curcumin and fennel essential oil (CU-FEO) in IBS symptoms relief. 121 patients with mild-to-moderate symptoms of IBS defined by an Irritable Bowel Syndrome- symptom severity score (IBS-SSS) 100-300 and abdominal pain score 30-70 on a 100 mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), were randomly assigned to CU-FEO or placebo (2 capsules b.d. for 30 days). Primary endpoint was the mean decrease of IBS-SSS at the end of the treatment corrected for the mean baseline score (relative decrease). The impact of the treatment on quality of life was assessed through IBS-QoL questionnaire. CU-FEO was safe, well-tolerated and induced symptom relief in patients with IBS; a significant decrease in the mean relative IBS-SSS was observed after 30 days of treatment (50.05 +/- 28.85% vs 26.12 +/- 30.62%, P<0.001). This result matched the reduction of abdominal pain and all the other symptoms of IBS-SSS. The percentage of symptom-free patients was significantly higher in the CU-FEO than in the placebo group (25.9% vs. 6.8%, P = 0.005). All domains of IBS-QoL improved consistently. CU-FEO significantly improved symptoms and quality of life in IBS patients over 30 days.

Personality traits and emotional patterns in irritable bowel syndrome.

The review focuses on those personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness), constructs (alexithymia and distressed - Type D personality) and emotional patterns (negative and positive) that are of particular concern in health psychology, with the aim to highlight their potential role on the pathogenesis, onset, symptom clusters, clinical course, and outcome of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Personality traits and emotional patterns play key roles in affecting autonomic, immune, inflammatory, and endocrine functions, thus contributing not only to IBS clinical expression and symptomatic burden, but also to disease physiopathology. In this sense, psychological treatments should address those personality traits and emotional features that are constitutive of, and integral to IBS. The biopsychosocial model of illness applied to IBS acknowledges the interaction between biological, psychological, environmental, and social factors in relation to pain and functional disability. A holistic approach to IBS should take into account the heterogeneous nature of the disorder, and differentiate treatments for different types of IBS, also considering the marked individual differences in prevalent personality traits and emotional patterns. Beyond medications, and lifestyle/dietary interventions, psychological and educational treatments may provide the optimal chance of addressing clinical symptoms, comorbid conditions, and quality of life in IBS patients.

Efficacy of Lactobacillus casei Shirota for patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Meta-analyses point to a modest but significant effect of probiotics on symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We aimed to assess the effect of the probiotic Lactobacillus casei Shirota (LcS) on symptoms and quality of life in IBS patients in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention study. IBS patients (Rome II) between 18 and 65 years of age were included. The study consisted of an 8-week intervention period in which the participants received probiotic (LcS) or placebo twice daily, followed by an 8-week follow-up period. Symptom diaries and quality of life were scored at weeks 0, 8 and 16. The primary outcome parameter was a decrease of at least 30% in a composite mean symptom score (MSS) at week 8 on the basis of an intention-to-treat analysis. Thirty-nine individuals (67% women) were included in the probiotic group and 41 individuals (71% women) were included in the placebo group. After the intervention period, the mean relative improvement did not reach 30% for MSS or any individual symptom score. After follow-up (week 16), a mean improvement of at least 30% was achieved for MSS in the probiotic group, but no significant difference was found between both treatment groups (mean±SD: 34±7%; 13±8%, P=0.06). After probiotic treatment with LcS, no improvement of 30% in MSS was observed after 8 weeks.

Symptom features of irritable bowel syndrome complicated with depression

Objective To improve the ability of early recognition of psychological disorders in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients by analyzing somatic and digestive tract symptoms of IBS patients complicated with depression. Methods From May to October 2014, 102 out-patients with IBS were enrolled who completed the questionnaire and were followed-up. Another 102 gender and age matched individual who received check-up were set as healthy controls. The detailed clinical data of all IBS patients were collected. The scores of Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), digestive symptom questionnaire, somatic symptom questionnaire and irritable bowel syndrome symptom severity score (IBS-SSS) were evaluated in the IBS patients, and HAMD was evaluated in healthy controls. The t test or chi-square test was performed for statistical analysis. Results HAMD score of the IBS group was 19.1±17.0, which was higher than that of control group (3.2±2.9; t=8.966, P<0.05). Among the 102 IBS patients, 58 were complicated with depression (56.9%) and 44 (43.1%) without depression. Among the IBS patients complicated with depression, 75.9% (44/58) were overlapped with gastrointestinal symptoms, which was higher than that of patients without depression (34.1%, 15/44), and the difference was statistically significant (χ2=17.902, P<0.01). The typical somatic symptoms of IBS patients complicated with depression were headaches, dizziness, insomnia, palpitations, chest pain, and chest tightness.The results of IBS-SSS indicated that scores of duration of abdominal pain, bloating degree and the impacts on quality of life in IBS patients complicated with depression were 78.1±28.7, 53.7±17.9 and 69.4±19.7, which were significantly higher than those of IBS patients without depression (34.7±16.6, 37.7±12.5 and 32.4±12.7). The score of defecation satisfaction of IBS patients complicated with depression was 43.7±16.4, which was lower than that of patients without depression (55.0±20.3), and all the differences were statistically significant (t=-8.930, -2.326, -8.913 and -2.344, all P<0.05). Conclusions The somatic and overlapped digestive symptoms of IBS patients complicated with depression are obvious and complicated. For IBS patients with obvious extra symptoms, mental disorders should be taken into consideration. On the basis of the treatment of IBS symptoms, the treatment of psychological disorders are also needed. Key words: Irritable bowel syndrome; Depression; Somatic syndrome

Does oral α-galactosidase relieve irritable bowel symptoms?

Objective. Abdominal bloating is reported by a majority of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. Excess colonic fermentation may cause gaseous symptoms. Several foodstuffs contain oligosaccharides with an α-galactosidic linkage that is resistant to mammalian hydrolases. Assisted hydrolysis by exogenous α-galactosidase enzyme (AG) could offer a way of controlling IBS symptoms by reducing colonic fermentation and gas production. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of AG on symptom severity and quality of life in IBS patients with abdominal bloating or flatulence. Methods. A total of 125 subjects with IBS received AG or placebo at meals for 12 weeks. IBS-Symptom Severity Score (IBS-SSS) and quality of life (QoL) were assessed at baseline, during the treatment and at 4-week follow-up. Results. AG showed a trend toward a more prominent decrease in IBS-SSS. The responder rate at week 16 was higher for the AG group. No difference was detected in QoL between AG and placebo groups. A total of 25 patients (18 in AG group and 7 in placebo group, p = 0.016) withdrew from the study. Abdominal pain and diarrhea were more often reported as reason for withdrawal in AG group. Conclusions. We found no evidence to support the use of AG routinely in IBS patients. Improvement of clinical response at 4-week follow-up may suggest a long-term effect of unknown mechanism, but could also be attributed to non-responder drop out. Gastrointestinal (GI) side effects may be a coincidence in this study, but irritation of GI tract by AG administration cannot be excluded.

Diet in irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic gastrointestinal disorder that is characterized by intermittent abdominal pain/discomfort, altered bowel habits and abdominal bloating/distension. This review aimed at presenting the recent developments concerning the role of diet in the pathophysiology and management of IBS. There is no convincing evidence that IBS patients suffer from food allergy/intolerance, and there is no evidence that gluten causes the debated new diagnosis of non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). The component in wheat that triggers symptoms in NCGS appears to be the carbohydrates. Patients with NCGS appear to be IBS patients who are self-diagnosed and self-treated with a gluten-free diet. IBS symptoms are triggered by the consumption of the poorly absorbed fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) and insoluble fibre. On reaching the distal small intestine and colon, FODMAPS and insoluble fibre increase the osmotic pressure in the large-intestine lumen and provide a substrate for bacterial fermentation, with consequent gas production, abdominal distension and abdominal pain or discomfort. Poor FODMAPS and insoluble fibres diet reduces the symptom and improve the quality of life in IBS patients. Moreover, it changes favourably the intestinal microbiota and restores the abnormalities in the gastrointestinal endocrine cells. Five gastrointestinal endocrine cell types that produce hormones regulating appetite and food intake are abnormal in IBS patients. Based on these hormonal abnormalities, one would expect that IBS patients to have increased food intake and body weight gain. However, the link between obesity and IBS is not fully studied. Individual dietary guidance for intake of poor FODMAPs and insoluble fibres diet in combination with probiotics intake and regular exercise is to be recommended for IBS patients.

Research of traditional Chinese medicine and umbilical treatment on diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome with mental disorders

Objective To observe the traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） and umbilical treatment on diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome（IBS-D）with mental disorders. Methods Thirty-seven cases with IBS-D were randomized into a treatment group（33 cases） and a control group（31 cases）. The treatment group was given Shugan-Jianpi TCM decoction and pepper umbilical dressing. The control group was given Pinaverium Bromide Tablets and Flupentixol and Melitracen tablets. After having been treated for 4 weeks, Hamilton Anxiety Scale（HAMA）, Hamilton Depression Scale（HAMD）, IBS Symptom Severity Scale（IBS-SSS）, IBS quality of life questionnaire （IBS-QOL） were determined. Results After the treatment, HAMD, HAMA, IBS-SSS in the treatment group and the control group all significantly decreased （the treatment group t=14.280, 13.530, 18.847,the control group t=11.514, 9.424, 13.829, P〈0.01）, and IBS-QOL increased markedly（t=-16.848, -11.712, P〈0.01）. Compared with HAMA, IBS-SSS and IBS-QOL in treatment group, the control group showed statistical difference（t=-3.183, -2.549, 3.904, P〈0.01 or 0.05）. The total effective rate of the treatment group was 94%higher than 75%of the control group（χ^2=4.727, P〈0.05）. Conclusion Shugan-Jianpi TCM decoction and pepper umbilical dressing can improve the clinical symptoms and psychological symptoms and improve the quality of life of IBS-D patients. Complementary and alternative medicines in irritable bowel syndrome: An integrative view

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder with a high incidence in the general population. The diagnosis of IBS is mainly based on exclusion of other intestinal conditions through the absence of inflammatory markers and specific antigens. The current pharmacological treatment approaches available focus on reducing symptom severity while often limiting quality of life because of significant side effects. This has led to an effectiveness gap for IBS patients that seek further relief to increase their quality of life. Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) have been associated with a higher degree of symptom management and quality of life in IBS patients. Over the past decade, a number of important clinical trials have shown that specific herbal therapies (peppermint oil and Iberogast(®)), hypnotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy, acupuncture, and yoga present with improved treatment outcomes in IBS patients. We propose an integrative approach to treating the diverse symptoms of IBS by combining the benefits of and need for pharmacotherapy with known CAM therapies to provide IBS patients with the best treatment outcome achievable. Initial steps in this direction are already being considered with an increasing number of practitioners recommending CAM therapies to their patients if pharmacotherapy alone does not alleviate symptoms sufficiently.

Influence of gender and psychosocial parameters on the quality of life in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Objective To investigate the influence of gender and psychosocial parameters on the quality of life in patients with irritable bowel syndrome(IBS). Methods Out-patients from Jan to Oct 2008 in the Department of Gastroenterology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were enrolled. Based on Rome teria IBS was diagnosed. Interviewed by a GI physician with questionnaire of demographic data,Zung self-rating anxiety and depression scale(SAS/SDS) and IBS-specific quality of life(IBS-QOL) questionnaire. Results 452 patients were diagnosed as IBS according to Rome Ⅲ criteria. IBS was more common in female. In male, anxiety and depression scales were significantly increased( t =7. 191、6. 459 ,P ＜ 0. 01 ) and the scale of IBS-QOL was significantly decreased ( t =9.119, P ＜ 0.01 ) in female IBS patients. In IBS patients, IBS-QOL scales were negatively associated with the anxiety and depression scales(P ＜0. 01 ). Conclusion These results suggest that there were gender differences in psychological status and quality of life in IBS patients,and difference psychological status based on gender should influence the quality of life of patients with IBS.
