This study explores the self-reflective transformation of the researcher during the research process by examining local youth volunteers at a youth center in Laos, Southeast Asia. The study employs auto-ethnography to analyze this transformation by deconstructing autobiographical experiences and interpreting their meaning. The primary data for this study consists of the researcher's reflection note (field notes) from the initial field visit in 2019 to the conclusion of the study in 2024. The researcher applied the deconstructive approach proposed by Pinar et al. (1995), based on Derrida’s (1967) concept, structuring the analysis into three stages: “discovering the text,” “reading the text,” and “writing the text.” Through this deconstructive reflection, the study demonstrates that the researcher was not merely an observer in the field but became an active participant, engaging in relationships with research participants while re-evaluating and adjusting personal perceptions and attitudes. This transformation is narrated through three stages: Phuak-Khao (They), Jao (You), and Phuak-Hao (We), illustrating the process in which the researcher initially distanced themselves from the research subjects, then engaged with them through interactions, and ultimately formed a communal identity. The findings of this study provide three key implications. First, cross-cultural research experiences induce self-reflection in researchers, leading to shifts in their perception and the discovery of appropriate research approaches. Second, the researcher’s reflective transformation aligns with Joo Jaehong(2021) proposed process of deconstructive cross-cultural understanding. Third, life history research, as utilized in this study, demonstrates the potential of experiential learning as an educational process, reaffirming the educational significance of autobiographical experiences.

Fixing the past, mediating the future? Human rights brokers in Nepal and Sri Lanka

ABSTRACT In this article we focus on human rights brokerage in Nepal and Sri Lanka – two countries undergoing different kinds of post-war crises, which opened spaces and demands for brokers. We zoom in on the lives of two individuals who became human rights brokers in these turbulent moments of change, and explore their positionalities, roles and effects as brokers. We seek to move beyond simplistic portrayals of such brokers as a dissembling, self-interested and professionalized class of gatekeepers, and instead focus on the brokers’ narratives, understandings, and everyday practices. Based on detailed life history research, this article reveals a more complex picture of brokerage during crisis. It is argued that we need to take seriously the accounts of human rights brokers, how they understand their own positionality, actions and impacts on society. We focus on the complex temporalities surrounding human rights brokerage in post war contexts; how brokers mediate between a traumatic past (linked to human rights abuses and justice denied) and a desired future (involving restitution, access to rights and justice) in the context of an unstable present marked by violence, churning politics, and institutional inertia. Human rights brokers’ ability to navigate these contested understandings of time is shaped by their own past histories and their current positionalities. Whilst being cautious not to generalize from the lives of two human rights brokers, our work offers a corrective to accounts of brokerage as a value-free, transactional activity; instead, we reveal how, for these brokers at least, ethics, values and political beliefs played an important role in driving their actions, even though declared goals were rarely met in practice.

The purpose of this study is to support the elderly lifelong education for active aging of women victims of prostitution in military base towns who have become elderly. The research problem is to reconstruct the life histories of women victims of prostitution in military base and propose a method of needs-based senior lifelong education. The research method applied life history research method. The results of the study showed that they were born as daughters in poor families and settled in the base village, a hastily constructed US military comfort facility, after the Korean War in their teens. In middle age, after stopping work amidst systematic repression and surveillance, they were rejected by their families and cut off from the outside world, suffering from the four afflictions of old age: poverty, illness, loneliness, and loss of role. Lifelong learning for active aging should support capacity development for emancipatory practices so that old age becomes an opportunity for new life. Specifically, it should support the acquisition of legal knowledge about human trafficking, human rights abuses, and compensation for damages; help them discover the meaning of their lives; and develop their capacity for social participation so that they can break free from subordination and become emancipatory beings.

Habitat dependent life history

Life-history research, commonly treated as the study of age and stage-dependent vital rates, often invokes a role for habitat but seldom in the context of theories of density- and frequency-dependent habitat selection. Merging life history research with habitat-selection theory is crucial because habitat and habitat selection modify the partial interactive effects of genetics, traits, demography, and environment on adaptive evolution. The density and frequency dependence of habitat selection feeds back onto life histories whenever the relationship between fitness and density varies among habitats and individuals occupy the habitat yielding highest fitness. Comparisons of life history and habitat selection in rodents, fishes, and fisheries support the habitat-dependent perspective but also reveal manifold processes in need of further theoretical and empirical study.

The purpose of this study is to explore the identity and agency of village education activists through situated learning and to expand discussions for supporting their capacity enhancement. The research method used for this study is based on Mandelbaum’s (1973) life history study, which analyzes three areas: ‘dimensions of life’, ‘turning points’, and ‘adaptations’. The analysis results in the ‘dimensions of life’ area are as follows: First, the economic crisis in the family during childhood served as a cause to form an identity of self-reliance. Second, early employment during youth led to the exploration of identity. Third, experiencing family adversity caused a period of identity confusion. Fourth, acting as family problem solver helped to discover her self-motivated behaviors, which acted as the driving force for village education activists to obtain agency. In the ‘turning points’ area: Personal conditions such as assimilation with the village community became a turning point in identity formation and the manifestation of agency as a prepared village education activist. Social conditions, such as acquiring matching skills to connect the village and people, and people with people, became a turning point in finding one’s position. In the ‘adaptations’ area: Being a complete subject from a peripheral object based on a self-directed community activities, participation in self-directed learning processes, growing together with participating members, and learning in professional community networks formed the basis for the identity and agency of village education activists. Through the results of this life history research, discussions for supporting the growth of village education activists in regional education innovation and development were presented.

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the developmental process of transpersonal spiritual counselor. To achieve this, the study applied categorical content analysis, a method of life history research, to five representative transpersonal spiritual counselors in Korea. Four key categories emerged regarding their development as traditional and transpersonal spiritual counselor: 'Experiencing life's suffering and questioning the human mind,' 'Finding a path in psychology and growing as a counselor,' 'Undergoing the developmental process of a transpersonal spiritual counselor,' and 'Achieving a harmonious integration of traditional and transpersonal spiritual counseling.' Those categories included 3, 4, 4, and 3 sub-concepts, respectively. By addressing the relatively underexplored area of transpersonal spiritual counselor development in Korea, this study offers deeper insights into the unique developmental journey of transpersonal spiritual counselors and the lifelong process of counselor growth.

Life history in Caenorhabditis elegans: from molecular genetics to evolutionary ecology.

Life history is defined by traits that reflect key components of fitness, especially those relating to reproduction and survival. Research in life history seeks to unravel the relationships among these traits and understand how life history strategies evolve to maximize fitness. As such, life history research integrates the study of the genetic and developmental mechanisms underlying trait determination with the evolutionary and ecological context of Darwinian fitness. As a leading model organism for molecular and developmental genetics, Caenorhabditis elegans is unmatched in the characterization of life history-related processes, including developmental timing and plasticity, reproductive behaviors, sex determination, stress tolerance, and aging. Building on recent studies of natural populations and ecology, the combination of C. elegans' historical research strengths with new insights into trait variation now positions it as a uniquely valuable model for life history research. In this review, we summarize the contributions of C. elegans and related species to life history and its evolution. We begin by reviewing the key characteristics of C. elegans life history, with an emphasis on its distinctive reproductive strategies and notable life cycle plasticity. Next, we explore intraspecific variation in life history traits and its underlying genetic architecture. Finally, we provide an overview of how C. elegans has guided research on major life history transitions both within the genus Caenorhabditis and across the broader phylum Nematoda. While C. elegans is relatively new to life history research, significant progress has been made by leveraging its distinctive biological traits, establishing it as a highly cross-disciplinary system for life history studies.

This article sought to explore the educational value and meaning inherent in the teaching experience of an elderly elementary school female teacher through life history research. The research results are summarized as follows. Firstly, an elderly elementary school female teacher overcame her teaching fears with her challenging attitude and overcame her professional crisis with her humble heart. In addition, she overcame her job anxiety with a passionate attitude and escaped social prejudice with a confident attitude. This meant confidently moving forward on her teaching path without giving in to external conditions. Secondly, the participant wanted to become a sensitive and experienced education expert, and a senior in life who was comfortable and trustworthy for parents. Additionally, the participant wanted to be a warm and diligent supporter to her fellow teachers, and tried to be a wise and sagacious educational leader within the school. This teaching experience meant becoming a fully-fledged professional teacher in elementary schools through the experience and expertise accumulated over a long period of time. The results of this paper will provide lessons and insights to deeply understand and improve the professional lives of female elementary school teachers.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to deeply understand and analyze the process from becoming a music teacher to a special education teacher to find the existential meaning of life and suggest implications for growth as a teacher. Methods Through the autobiographical life history research method, the course of major events according to the chronological flow of a specific section of the teacher's life that had a significant impact on the teacher's life is examined from a first-person perspective to find the existential meaning of life and promote the teacher's internal growth. Results The innate element of immediate action practice was a great help in the process of going from a music teacher to a special education teacher, and all the effort and time invested in the process became an important factor in growing as a teacher. Third, rather than avoiding crises that come in one's life, everyone must go back to the starting point and face them, remembering the passion, enlightenment, and growth process of that period to provide the driving force to overcome the crisis. Fourth, students are also valuable members of the family. She was able to remember once again that teachers have no right to treat students poorly, so they must respect students for who they are. Lastly, I came to find identity and meaning between music and special education in that music motivates me to live as a special education teacher and the process and life of a special education teacher provide a foundation for me to grow to a higher level as a teacher. Conclusions Having the courage to take on a challenge and take immediate action became the driving force that allowed us to achieve our goals and move forward despite environmental difficulties. Second, through experience working in special classes, the true roles and responsibilities of special education teachers and a universal view of education were established. Third, teachers have no right to treat students poorly. Fourth, all the time and effort you put into achieving your goal is meaningful, with nothing left to waste. Fifth, teachers are not perfect, so they need time to rest and recharge. What is more important is whether you grow after making a mistake than the fact that you made a mistake. Sixth, we must have the opportunity for inner growth through time of self-reflection and regain the existential meaning of life.

예술가교사(teaching artist) 체험에 관한 생애사 연구

The purpose of this study is to explore the identity that teaching artists construct as they experience arts and culture education. Through the life history research method, I looked in depth at the present lives of eight visual arts major research participants from their childhood to the present day as teaching artists and how the art educational experiences permeate the artists’ lives and construct their identities. First, while un-derstanding the overall life process of teaching artists, I looked into the main background of working as artists and teaching artists. Next, the period when research participants took the role of teaching artists can be described in four categories: art class process, experiences with fellow teaching artists, experi-ences with class participants, and difficulties and conflict situations in art education activities. Based on the analysis of the data, four main meanings were derived: 'a prop for artists to work as artists', 'a coor-dinate to confirm identity', 'a channel to communicate with society', and 'social contribution through art education'. The significance of this study is that it examines the process of identity construction from the perspectives of the teaching artists based on the life histories of the research participants, further expand-ing the identity discussion of the teaching artists and using it as a basis for understanding teaching artists in Korea.

This study is a study on the life history research of a restaurant menu developer that introduced the various life processes of the individual related to menu development in the field as the job of the study participant who chose a chef that occurred as his first job was changed into a restaurant menu developer while working. Through the life process as such, this researcher discovered the context connected to the core of the birth, growth, and operation of the restaurant business and the individual's career development and gave a meaning to the context. In this study, it was discovered that menu developers should actively utilize various careers and understand the direction of the company, and that the developer's experience is advantageous for career management within the organization. In addition, the role of menu developers through the system was emphasized in early restaurant companies.

First Account of the Breeding Biology of Indian Blue Robin (Larvivora brunnea) in Southwest China.

Breeding biology lies at the core of life history research on birds, and it provides important information for avian conservation. We discovered one nest of the Indian Blue Robin (Larvivora brunnea) on 28 May 2021, at the Laojun mountains in Lijiang, northwestern Yunnan, China. Field observation was combined with the use of a GoPro camera for video shooting to quantitatively study the incubation and brooding behavior. We also conducted measurements of the eggs and nestlings on site and inspected the nesting materials used. A bowl-shaped nest with four eggs was located at 2830 m in the evergreen deciduous broad-leaved forest. All eggs were successfully incubated and two nestlings fledged on 22 June 2021, resulting in a total breeding success of 50%. Only the female bird incubated the eggs and brooded the nestlings. The incubation period was at least 13 days and the nestling period was 13 days. As incubation progressed, the incubation bout duration decreased. During the incubation period, the nesting time of the female bird shows a declining trend as incubation progresses. Both parents participated in feeding the nestling, and the frequency of parental supply increased with the maturity of the nestling.

Living with other women’s lives: ‘research resonance’ in the context of life history interviewing

ABSTRACTThis article reflects on the ways researchers are affected by their engagement with the stories they encounter in research. It proposes the notion of ‘research resonance’ to capture the experience of living with research participants’ stories, and by extension, their lives. The article draws on data collected for the ‘Girlhood and Later Life’ project, which investigated youth experiences and transitions to adulthood of women born between 1939 and 1952 in Britain. Reflecting on examples from a music elicitation exercise and life history narratives, the researchers on this project explore and conceptualise their experience of living with ‘sociological memories’. Their accounts address how life history researchers may be challenged or affected on a personal level through their professional practice. The article concludes by outlining the key implications of ‘research resonance’ for the craft of analysing life-course interviews.

This study applies life history research methods to reflect on the individual’s life as a mental health social worker and explores the policies, systems, and historical circumstances of mental health social welfare. This also aims to analyze the interaction between the social environment and the lives of mental health social workers. The research results analyzed based on Mandelbaum’s analysis method show that the first, ‘dimension of life’ is analyzed as “expansion of expertise,” “two sides of health and welfare,” “inclined practice field,” and “survival in the practice field.” Second, ‘turning point’ area is analyzed as “Opportunity and Luck” and “Finding Welfare Identity.” Third, ‘adaptation’ was analyzed as “solidarity and challenge.” Based on the research results, four implications were suggested: Reorganization the medical-centered delivery system into a welfare-centered delivery system; Resolution of the advancement opportunity in Mental Health Welfare Center; Establishment of an education system to strengthen the identity of social workers; Reinforcement solidarity in mental health social welfare practice sites

Working Together to Create Meaning: Narratives of Care Leavers in Eastern Europe

Abstract This article uses life history research to reveal a new understanding of institutional care. The study draws on interviews with care leavers from a Latvian orphanage who narrate life histories and identify critical life events and moments of resistance to times of adversity. The methodology intentionally positioned study nineteen care leavers as experts on their own experiences, focusing on three main life phases: before, during and after living in care. Findings deconstructed and brought nuance to stereotypes and dominant assumptions about people growing up in care, providing alternative narratives of self-reliance and resistance to adversity. Recommendations for practice and policy are discussed. This rich knowledge base can be used to support and inform the practice of children in the care system in Latvia and more widely.

Life History Research and the Violence of War: Experiencing Binary Thinking on Pain and Privilege, Being and Knowing

This reflective piece explores the ‘I am the evidence’ side of the process of knowing. It offers the story of the Yugoslav wars of secession (1991–1999) and their human consequences from the point of view of someone who refuses to surrender ground to the socio-political conditions of life in which ethno-national and cultural differences have to be transgressed. The core of this article is based on the life history of Maja Korac, developed in conversation with Cindy Horst. It approaches the intersections of her life and research from a narrative research perspective. We engage in a contrapuntal discussion of how Maja’s family background, gender, social class, and ethnic/national identity affected her life choices in terms of political engagement, research trajectories, and mobility paths. In doing so, we follow Barad’s argument that we do not obtain knowledge by standing outside the world; we know because we are part of the world. Hence, our discussion and analysis enables the multivocal articulation of the interweaving of personal, collective, geopolitical, and historical contexts in Maja’s research. This process made Maja feel visible after a very long time, because it opened the possibility of (re)gaining the vocabulary to express who she is, and how it has been for her as a human being within a professional role and identity, as well as within an ascribed ethnic identity during a specific historic time. This opportunity for understanding and knowing while being inside the world allowed Maja to repossess her life and identity—individual, professional, collective. It also re-opened the possibility to challenge further the notion of ‘true knowledge’ that is presumably based on ‘methodologically sound paradigms’, all of which exclude the researcher as a person, as who, as a life.

Sand Story Counseling for Korean Early Childhood and Young Students: Life History Research on Heesoon Cho's Life Works and their Meanings

This study centers on the dynamics of psychology theory. Drawing upon Heesoon Cho's life, we aim to extract and analyze sand story counseling in her personal and academic experiences. Additionally, we aim to investigate her process of adapting sand play techniques into Korean sand story counseling and explore how this adaptation of sandplay, along with its dissemination, contributed to early childhood development, counseling, and psychological exploratory behaviors in Korea. To avoid bias, we adopted a life history method, including collaborative interviews and triangulation. The results reflected Cho’s life chronologically, describing significant events in her life. Using existing Western theories, Cho transformed and acculturated the existing sandplay technique into sand story counseling in the Korean context. Cho observed significant positive outcomes through sand story counseling. Sand story counseling theory significantly contributed to professional counseling. This study strongly supports future culture-fit counseling research in Korea, as opposed to adopting Western theories.

마을교육공동체 실천 학교 교원들의 학교 중심적 태도 탈피에 대한 생애사 연구

In this study, the process of internalizing the exclusive ‘schooling-centric attitude’ of school teachers and the possibility of overcoming ‘schooling-centric attitude’ were explored by tracking the socio-cultural lives of school teachers through a life history research. To this end, a topic-centered life history study related to ‘schooling-centric attitude’ was conducted, focusing on the lives of school teachers in the Maeul Educational Community who internalized and overcame ‘schooling-centric attitude’ as “natural attitude” related to education. ‘Schooling-centric attitude’ in the life history of research participants was a natural attitude accepted in daily life based on the interaction with socio-cultural conditions and structures. Through the transformational experience, research participants in the study were critically aware of ‘schooling-centric attitude’ that they unconsciously took for granted, and they were able to overcome ‘schooling-centric attitude’ by trying new educational practices. The results of this study will provide insights into exploring what kind of conscious effort is needed to change ‘schooling-centric attitude’ while capturing the socio-cultural context and conditions about ‘schooling-centric attitude’ of school teachers
