Yeasts of the genus Candida are the dominant cause of onychomycosis in Libyan women but not men: results of a 2-year surveillance study.

The reported frequency of recovery of fungi from infected nails varies according to the geographical area. To establish the nature of the causal agents in a sample of the Libyan population presenting with suspected onychomycosis. Samples were taken from the infected fingernails of 648 patients attending the Tripoli Medical Centre. Samples from 500 patients proved positive for fungi following culturing, while 476 were potassium hydroxide and culture positive. Of the culture-positive samples, yeasts of the genus Candida (C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, C. guillermondii and C. tropicalis) were the dominant cause of this condition in women (417 of 434, 96%) but were responsible for only a minority of cases in men (three of 66, 5%). In contrast, dermatophytes (Trichophyton violaceum, T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis) were responsible for this condition in the majority of cases in men (53 of 66, 80%) but only 3% (15 of 434) of cases in women. The mould Aspergillus nidulans was isolated from the nails of 10 (15%) men and two (0.5%) women. The data obtained in this study reveal an almost total separation of the aetiological agents responsible for onychomycosis based on gender.

ABSTRACT Since September 1969 the Libyan political system has undergone many fundamental changes. In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of Libyan political institutions, particularly the dualistic leadership: the “administrative power” and “the revolutionary power”. We also focus on the role Kadhafi plays in modernizing the Libyan society and emancipating Libyan women by building an authoritarian regime which has some of its references in Islamic and tribal culture of “statelessness”. Taking into consideration the nature of the Jamahiriya regime, we analyze Kadhafi's strategy of legitimizing his policies and the many contradictions of a Libyan society in transition.

Infant-Feeding Practices among Urban Libya Women

Infant feeding practices were examined for 212 multiparous urban Libyan women attending an outpatient gynecology department in a hospital in Tripoli. The women were about equally divided among illiterates those with a primary school education and those with a post-6th grade education. The mean age of the illiterate women was 32.2 years and that of the postprimary group was 26.5 years. 38% of the postprimary group were employed. 95.6% of the infants were breast fed -- 46.6% for 5 months and 25.1% for 6-12 months. The mean weaning age was 8.8 months. 18.6% of the women practiced breast feeding exclusively; 4.4% of mothers practiced bottle feeding exclusively; and 77% practiced mixed feeding (bottle with breast or bottle after breast). The major reasons given for initiating bottle feeding were lack of milk or the infants refusal to suck although fear of undernourishment desire to fatten the child the hospital practice of separating mother and child and psychological factors were also operative. At 3 months of age 46.4% of the infants were exclusively breast fed 27% were exclusively bottle fed and 26.5% were breast fed with supplements most prominently cereal. Illiterate mothers breast fed the longest (12.6 months) as opposed to 5.7 months for those with postprimary education but more of the latter (39%) supplemented with vegetables. By 3 months 72.2% of the infants were getting food supplements. The infants of ignorant mothers who bottle fed were at high risk for gastroenteritis and marasmus.

To the Editor.— Diffuse hair loss is a frequent complaint among patients, especially among women seeking treatment in our dermatology outpatient clinic. Among these women, we have observed several interesting cases in which the use of traditional dress wear by women results in a type of traumatic or traction alopecia. It is common practice among Libyan girls and women to cover the scalp hair with a scarf that is known in Arabic as maharama . This scarf starts at the forehead and is kept in position by a knot at the back of the head. In some cases, the knot is so tight that the scarf exerts a continuous and strong traction all along the anterior hairline of the forehead. This traction results in gradual hair loss and recession of the hairline. The alopecia corresponds precisely with the position of the scarf. The extent of the alopecia increases along with the

Phenotype and gene frequencies of antigens at the A and B HLA loci were determined in a sample of 89 random Libyan Jews now settled in Israel. Most antigens at the A locus are within the range found in European populations while, at the B locus, the frequencies differ from Caucasoid populations: B7 is usually rare (1%), Bw35 is frequent (14%) and Bw40 very common with more than 10%. Thirteen percent of Libyan women whose sera were screened for the presence of HLA antibodies gave positive results. Some of them are elderly women, about 15 years or more beyond their last birth.
