Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Study on Library Resource Usage Among Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental Students: A Cross-Sectional Single-Center Study.
  • Feb 16, 2026
  • Journal of dental education
  • Vidya B + 3 more

Library resources play a critical role in supporting academic learning and research, particularly in health sciences education. Despite increased availability of both physical and digital library materials, the extent to which dental students utilize these resources remains uncertain. To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) related to library resource usage among undergraduate and postgraduate dental students at a single dental institution. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among dental students using a structured, self-administered questionnaire. The survey assessed students' awareness of available library resources, their attitudes toward library use, and their actual practices regarding both physical and digital resource utilization. Data were analyzed using Pearson chi-square test and a p value of ≤0.05. The study included 300 participants of which 221were undergraduates and 43 post graduates. While most participants acknowledged the importance of library resources for academic success, only a moderate proportion reported frequent use of these resources. Postgraduate students demonstrated higher awareness and usage of digital resources compared to undergraduates. Several barriers were identified, including lack of time, insufficient awareness of available resources, and limited digital literacy. Although dental students exhibit a positive attitude toward library use, there exists a gap between their knowledge and actual practices. Strengthening awareness programs, improving digital resource access, and integrating library training into the curriculum are recommended to enhance resource utilization and academic performance.

  • Federal University Gusau Faculty of Education Journal
  • Agbo, Rachel + 1 more

This study examined the influence of social media devices on level of competency and readiness among tertiary institution librarians in katsina state, Nigeria. The study specifically investigated whether librarians’ competencies and readiness influence the use of social media for information service delivery. A quantitative research approach using a descriptive survey design was adopted. The population of the study comprised all one hundred and forty one librarians in the thirteen (13) tertiary institutions in Katsina State. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection and was validated by experts in Library and Information Science, statistics, and English language. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test analysis with the aid of SPSS version 23. Findings revealed that librarians possessed moderate levels of competency (overall mean = 3.38) and readiness (overall mean = 3.31) in the use of social media for information service delivery. The t-test results indicated that librarians’ competencies significantly influenced the use of social media for information services (t = 2.118, p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. However, librarians’ readiness did not significantly influence social media use (t = 0.277, p > 0.05). The study concludes that while librarians demonstrate positive attitudes and willingness toward social media adoption, practical skills and professional competencies are more critical determinants of effective utilization than readiness alone. The study recommends continuous professional training for librarians and improved institutional support, including adequate ICT infrastructure and clear social media policies, to enhance the effective use of social media for information service delivery in academic libraries.

Physics-Driven Machine-Learning Retrieval and Uncertainty Quantification of Crop Leaf Area Index
  • Dec 4, 2025
  • Remote Sensing
  • Wei Liu + 3 more

Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a key biophysical descriptor of crop canopies and is essential for growth monitoring and yield estimation. We present a physics-driven machine-learning framework for operational LAI retrieval and end-to-end uncertainty quantification that couples the PROSAIL radiative transfer model with a genetic-algorithm-optimised multilayer perceptron (NN–GA). PROSAIL is sampled across plausible parameter priors and spectra are convolved with Sentinel-2B spectral response functions to build a 30,000-sample training library; a GA is used to globally optimise network weights and biases. Total retrieval uncertainty is decomposed into a simulation component (PROSAIL parameter variability) and a training component (variability across repeated NN–GA trainings) and combined via the law of propagation of uncertainty. The model was developed in Minqin (modelling/testing area; entirely maize) and transferred to Zhangye (transfer/validation area; predominantly maize, with one sunflower plot). Sentinel-2B validation results were RMSE/R2 = 0.44/0.73 (Minqin) and 0.40/0.56 (Zhangye), indicating reasonable cross-site generalisation. The uncertainty split indicates physical-driven contributions of 11.42% and 11.48% and machine-learning contributions of 18.06% and 12.96%, respectively. The framework improves 10 m LAI retrieval accuracy and supplies a reproducible, per-pixel uncertainty budget to guide product use and refinement.

  • Md Masud Rana + 1 more

This study examines the role of Digital Humanities (DH) in the libraries of Bangladesh, with a focus on integrating digital technologies, staff training, and enhancing the accessibility of digital resources. Given the rapid advancement of digital tools in academic environments, this research aims to assess DH implementation in libraries, identify key challenges, and suggest strategies to enhance their effectiveness and inclusivity. The study adopts both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected through two primary methods: Google Forms and interviews, with a sample size of 103 respondents. The data collected were analyzed utilizing Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with SmartPLS 4. The study finds a mixed adoption of digital humanities (DH) tools across libraries in Bangladesh, as the use of new technology required to fully digitalize them is still uneven. While urban academic libraries have made substantial progress in digitalizing resources and offering DH-based services, rural libraries continue to face significant barriers due to limited ICT infrastructure, the digital divide, and digital literacy gaps among staff and users. The analysis reveals that the lack of structured training for librarians and insufficient funding for infrastructure development pose significant obstacles. The study also highlights that integrating DH into libraries in Bangladesh is inevitable, as it can transform libraries into digital hubs for knowledge production and dissemination. The study recommends enhancing library ICT infrastructure, reducing the digital divide to make resources accessible to all, and offering digital literacy programs for both staff and library users.

ORBITaL-Net: A labeled training library for large-scale building feature extraction
  • Oct 17, 2025
  • Scientific Data
  • Benjamin Swan + 5 more

Over the course of several years, nearly 1.5 million building outlines have been created from approximately 128,000 training tiles covering roughly 7,000 km2 of very high-resolution multispectral overhead imagery, primarily dated between 2010 and 2020. This dataset, dubbed the Oak Ridge Building Image and TrAining Label Net (ORBITaL-Net), is designed for machine learning applications and is global in scope, with samples drawn from 72 countries across North America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. ORBITaL-Net captures a great diversity in geographic setting, structural characteristics, land use (urban and rural), terrain, and imagery conditions. While the labeled building outlines are themselves valuable, the dataset’s true strength lies in the pairing of these labels with corresponding reference imagery, which is being released for open source use. Similar to SpaceNet and Replicable AI For Microplanning (ramp), this building outline dataset will allow the larger computer vision community from academia, government, and industry the opportunity to develop robust, scalable, and generalizable geospatial machine learning techniques. Unlike SpaceNet and ramp, which offer high resolution labels and imagery primarily for large urban cities, ORBITaL-Net is not focused on training samples from heavily populated areas but instead aims to capture the innate variability of conditions present in both the physical environment and imagery collections.
