The award-winning 1990s buildings at Castle Meadow, Nottingham, which previously served as offices for HM Revenue and Customs, have been repurposed and transformed for the future as a University of Nottingham campus. The structural engineer had an influential role on the project to define the principles for retrofitting the existing buildings. The differing levels of retrofit, including a complex tensile-fabric roof replacement, have given the site a new lease of life, demonstrating that existing buildings and spaces can be innovatively transformed and reused using a variety of approaches. These buildings set the benchmark for low-carbon developments in Nottingham, with an embodied carbon of 80kgCO2e/m2 for the central building works.

ABSTRACT Men who have experienced childhood victimisation are at greater risk of perpetrating domestic violence (DV). While trauma and growth theories have focused on victims' and perpetrators' reactions to traumatic events, how these mechanisms interact is unknown. Semistructured interviews explored the lived experience of two men who had been abused as children and perpetrated DV as adults. Data was analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The personal experiential theme: Echoes from the past, a rebound, a new lease of life; overarched five group experiential themes. Within these themes participants' childhood exposure to family violence normalised a blueprint for later perpetuating violence in their own families. Transgenerational repetition brought repercussions for the perpetrating adult and the recognition of the need to seek help. Posttraumatic growth was possible through a reparatory and cognitive struggle to redefine that blueprint. These participants each experienced a complex and cumulative victim/perpetrator cataclysmic adult event. The standard interventions targeting DV perpetration have the potential to ignite such a complex traumatic event yet are not designed to manage it. Childhood abuse screening of men assigned to DV interventions is recommended along with future development of DV interventions dedicated to those with histories of childhood abuse and DV perpetration.

A better functional and site-specific drug delivery system for ophthalmic disease is necessary for the treatment of glaucoma. The present study aimed to design a brinzolamide (BRZ)-loaded cubosomal solid lipid nano-vesicular system (Cube-SLNV) that accomplished advanced statistical tools. Another objective was to overcome the problem of burst release associated with Glyceryl monooleate (GMO) Cube-SLNV by incorporating Gelucire 43/01 (GC43/01). The emulsification method was used to synthesize BRZ Cube-SLNV. The Plackett-Burman design (PBD) was utilized to screen the critical material (CMAs) and process attributes (CPPs). The optimization of the Cube-SLNV was accomplished through Box-Behnken design (BBD). Multivariate tools were applied to estimate the correlation between screened CMAs and critical quality attributes (CQAs). The Cube-SLNV was characterized by size, its size distribution, stability, thermal behavior, chemical interactions, BRZ release, entrapment efficiency, pH, sterility testing, and ex vivo irritation study. GMO and GC43/01 were chosen as solid lipids, whereas Poloxamer 407 (PLX) was a stabilizer for Cube-SLNV in preliminary trials. PBD-the Pareto chart suggested the significant influence of the amount of GMO, GC43/01, and PLX on the performance of Cube-SLNV, so chosen as CMAs for further optimization. BBD identified a crucial relationship between chosen CMAs and CQAs - Cube-SLNV size, poly-dispersibility index (PDI), and BRZ release. The optimized Cube-SLNV size was determined to be 101.2nm, with a zeta potential of - 34.6mV, a PDI of 0.253, and more than 90% entrapment efficiency. Cube-SLNV can release more than 90% BRZ within 8h. DSC and FTIR confirmed the formation of Cube-SLNV-loaded BRZ. HATCAM study revealed that the formulation has no irritancy. The controlled release behavior from optimized BRZ with higher entrapment efficiency was observed. Cube-SLNV was developed with the amalgamation of PBD for screening and BBD for correlating CMAs and CQAs. This novel delivery system is a revitalized formulation that promises to give a potential molecule a new lease of life.

This study investigates how upcycling and sustainable fashion practices can be promoted by using traditional Sindhi Ralli patchwork into clothing design. Sindhi Ralli, a traditional textile art created by women in interior Sindh, has been predominantly utilized for quilts and household decor. This study adopts a novel strategy by turning these materials into wearable clothing, increasing their use while maintaining their cultural value. The methodology reduces fabric waste, gives abandoned textiles a new lease of life, and encourages eco-friendly behaviors by combining pre-made Ralli quilts with second-hand garments to create distinctive upcycled clothing. Designers constantly search for new concepts for collections, and this study offers a valuable framework for incorporating traditional textiles specifically traditional patchwork from different cultures into sustainable clothing. It demonstrates how traditional crafts can be upcycled to blend in with modern styles, providing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions. By expanding Ralli’s application beyond household items, the study opens new possibilities for sustainable fashion, blending tradition with modern design. Additionally, it highlights socio-economic benefits for artisans, increasing demand, income opportunities, and visibility for indigenous craftsmanship. This initiative addresses sustainability challenges, promotes cultural preservation, and provides a model for integrating tradition with eco-conscious practices in the global fashion industry.

ABSTRACT: Early development theory prioritised the machine tools sector as it was critical in transforming savings into investment in an export constrained economy. Creating an articulated industrial structure, through a complement of capital and consumer goods, without foregoing the advantages of international trade, has been an integral part of economic development in large developing economies. The following paper builds a simple model to investigate the determinants of machine tool demand between 1980 and 2020. It uses the 'Bounds Test' in an ARDL model to econometrically establish a long run relation between machine tool output, the rate of profit and specific elements of gross fixed capital formation (an instrument for expected profitability) in the periods preceding and following economic liberalisation in India in 1991. In its linear single equation error correction form, our ARDL model also elaborates on the dynamics that follow a deviation from equilibrium in the short run. Despite the three series being cointegrated, a somewhat finer grained analysis reveals that indigenous technological change, following the liberalisation of 1991, has been a somewhat arduous journey for India. India was somewhat hesitant in joining the liberalisation bandwagon unlike China; the eighties witnessed the lifting of quantitative import restrictions and somewhat limited foreign investment, confined to the automobile and computer sectors. The machine tool sector, propped hitherto by public investment in railways and defence got a new lease of life through the automobile sector. Further, the sector was witness to radical technological change in the form of computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools. However, the import penetration in capital goods, particularly machine tools, remained high despite rising demand. This can be attributed to three reasons: rising inequalities have led to a demand for high 'quality' consumer durables (including automobiles) and following that, a 'derived demand' for niche capital goods; an inability of Indian capital goods manufacturers to export and move into higher quality production; finally, averting a potential balance of payments crisis due to high import intensity of consumption were inflows due to 'invisibles' and the inflow of portfolio capital in the periods preceding and following the 'Great Recession' of 2008. India confronts two options: to either let the domestic currency appreciate (and stifle export growth) or let there be a growth of domestic credit, commensurate with its absorption of foreign currency, that sustains import intensive consumption demand without technological change.

Virtual reality (VR) can be utilized to create video games exploring novel ways to control and interact with the environment. VR can be employed to revisit, extend, and enhance old video games to give them a new lease of life. In this paper, we describe the game Countdown VR in which players must use mental computation to reach a target number. Mental computation is used in everyday life, it is used for quick calculations and estimations. Countdown VR is a serious game designed and implemented using the Learning Mechanics-Game Mechanics framework. We provide an analysis of different approaches for determining the difficulty level of the game based on a number and target to attain and a selection of numbers combined to reach the target. We assess the user's performance and user's experience in the game, with questionnaires to quantify the related workload, usability, flow, motivation, and potential symptoms of users playing the game. The results provide key information related to the relationships between the subjective and objective evaluations of the proposed VR game by players, with a high correlation between VR sickness questionnaires, and moderate correlations between usability and motivation, flow and motivation.

Background/Aim: Organ donation continues to be acknowledged globally as the preferred treatment for individuals with end-stage organ diseases. So far, it is one of the greatest advances of modern science and has resulted in many patients getting a new lease of life. This research focused on assessing the understanding and perspectives of undergraduate medical students regarding organ donation. Methods: This descriptive survey was conducted among the undergraduate medical students at a government University in Anambra State of Nigeria. Data on knowledge and attitude were collected from the respondents using self-administered pre-tested questionnaires. Results: More than 95 % of the participants demonstrated awareness of organ donation. Majority (43.4 %) identified a healthy living donor as an ideal candidate for organ donation. Participants who were clinical students were predominantly aware that the donor and recipient's blood groups must be compatible, as well as their human leukocyte antigens (HLA) being identical (OR = 2.2 and 2.5, respectively). They were also predominantly willing to donate their organs after death and to encourage their future patients to donate their organs (OR = 7.88 and 5.49, respectively). Pre-clinical students tended to agree more with the idea of keeping their bodies intact after death (OR = 6.41). Conclusion: Organ donation should be given greater emphasis and introduced early in the medical curriculum. This will serve to improve knowledge and bring about a desirable attitudinal change among future medical practitioners.

Mosques are often described as a place of worship and a place for managing religious matters. Still, the difference brought by a mosque in Merbok, Kedah makes this mosque a unique and trending mosque among the community on social media. The 52-year-old Pekan Merbok Jamek Mosque has been given a new lease of life and rebranded as Masjid Al-Busyra. The construction of the mosque with the concept of a Rest and Treatment Stop and also as a One-Stop Centre makes it the first traveler-friendly mosque in Kedah. Therefore, this article focuses on the production of a documentary video entitled "Jejak Infaq Baitullah Merbok". This documentary video shows the renovation of Masjid Al-Busyra and its main role as a mosque that has successfully brought drastic changes to the surrounding community until it has succeeded in elevating the rural mosque as a regionally known mosque. This documentary video aims to portray the history of the transformation of the mosque development, promote economic and social activities in the mosque area, and show the uniqueness of Masjid Al-Busyra Merbok that has not been done in any regional mosques. The pre production method involved researching information on websites and social media, field survey (recce), and interviews with mosque management, residents, visitors, and traders to obtain accurate and detailed information. The production of a 10-minute full documentary video, a 1-minute teaser video, and a 1-minute behind-the-scenes video on "Jejak Infaq Baitullah Merbok", is an important step in reflecting the function of a mosque which is not only a place of worship but also an economic centre that can be used as a source of inspiration and change the community's perception.

The importance of construction based on the industrialised building system (IBS) approach in accelerating the achievement of development objectives cannot be denied, including in countries such as Malaysia. In fact, this system has been given a new lease of life in the construction industry development plan lately to strengthen its contribution to the country. The availability of building materials from the mainland of Peninsular Malaysia is a crucial factor for the successful installation of IBS components at construction sites. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the critical factors in the supply management of IBS components at the Pulau Perhentian, Terengganu’s construction site. In order to achieve the objective of this study, a qualitative study that is a structured interview with sixteen (16) construction contractors, three (3) each from supplier companies and transport ships/vessel or ‘barges’ that are directly involved in the supply of this IBS components have been carried out. Seven (7) critical factors have been identified which are: 1) compliance with government directives; 2) accuracy of work planning and scheduling; 3) the contractor’s current financial position is good; 4) good relationship (tolerance) between contractor and supplier; 5) availability of components; 6) availability of transport ship/vessel or ‘barge’ and machinery; and 7) able to predict weather conditions. These critical factors can be used as a useful basis in providing a more effective industrialised building system-based project implementation environment in the future on Perhentian Island in particular and other islands in general. The findings of this study have opened up a new research space towards providing a more perfect environment for the implementation of management activities for the supply of IBS components at the construction site.

An attempt to reconstruct the formation of philosophical biographistics in contemporary Ukrainian philosophy, starting from the 1990s, is presented. It has been proven that this direction is fruitfully developed in the national philosophical tradition, both at the theoretical and conceptual level, and in the dissemination of practical projects that are implemented in scientific and public spaces. It is proved that the actualization of philosophical biographical studies organically fits into the “biographical turn” carried out in the modern Humanities, the basic features of which are the conceptualization of the phenomenon of biography, the change of biographical optics. Three main regions of philosophical biographistics in Ukraine are distinguished: a) theoretical-conceptual, in which the ontology of biography in culture, the phenomenon of biography in sociocultural being, models of biographical analysis in the history of philosophy, contours of historical-philosophical biographical studies as a subgenre of the history of philosophy are studied; b) applied, where Ukrainian philosophers create their own versions of intellectual, spiritual biographies of great thinkers (H. Skovoroda, F. Nietzsche, I. Sikorsky, etc.). The second region is designated as biographics, philosophical biographics. In this space, philosophers carry out “saturation” of intellectual biography, this genre is given a new lease of life. The next direction: c) praxical, a zone of philosophical practices, the manifestation of which is the activity of the “Oral History of Philosophy” association, which is focused on live conversations, the creation of a collection of interviews with philosophers, the essential component of which is biographical. It is noted that in the future, one more region of philosophical biographistics should be formed – educational. Philosophical biographistics has a great resource for philosophical education and for philosophy teaching courses for students of universities of all specialties.

Satellite-detected night lights data are widely used to evaluate economic impacts of disasters. Growing evidence from elsewhere in applied economics suggests that impact estimates are potentially distorted when popular Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) night lights data are used. The low resolution DMSP sensor provides blurred and top-coded images compared to those from the newer and more precise Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) images. Despite this, some disaster impact studies continue to use DMSP data, which have also been given a new lease of life through the use of harmonized series linking DMSP and VIIRS data to provide a longer sample. We examine whether use of DMSP data affects evaluations, using expected typhoon damages in the Philippines from 2012–19 as our case study. With DMSP data, negative impacts on economic activity from expected damages at the municipality level appear over 50% larger than when the VIIRS data are used. The DMSP data give the appearance of greater spatial autocorrelation in luminosity and through this channel may tend to spread apparent spatial impacts of shocks. Harmonized data that adjust VIIRS images to be like the DMSP data also have this spurious autocorrelation so researchers should be cautious in using these data for disaster assessments.

Hamann's diatribe against the alleged dogmas of the Enlightenment represents a still pertinent warning against the illusions that can affect philosophical reflection, especially nowadays, when the algorithmic language typical of some segments of science is prone to bite increasingly larger slices of our imagination. At least is that what claims this essay by reconstructing Hamann's diatribes against one of his contemporaries and then giving them a new lease of life by bringing them into the context of contemporary discussions about the scope and role of reason in human life.

Thirayattam is an ethnic ritual art form of Sothern Malabar region of Kerala, India. It is enacted in the courtyard of sacred groves or “Kaavukal” and village temples of Kozhikode and Malappuram regions between January and April. This divine dance drama is a harmonious blend of dance, songs, instrumental music, martial arts, facial and bodily makeup and rituals. This ethnic folk art is enacted to please the deities using its own typical customs and performance style. Rituals and performances once seen as contradictory have now become complementary to each other due to the changing circumstances of the present era. The current article attempts to trace the transition of this ritualistic folk art to an independent art form in the 21st century. In 2022, P. V. Sadique a trainer in Mappila arts, from Kozhikode performed Thirayattam at a film award ceremony in Kochi. With his performance, the ritualistic performance now gained a secular avatar breaking the long prevailing caste and class norms. The article also ponders upon how Thirayattam performance by Seeta Sathish broke the gender, and caste barriers associated with this art form. On a deeper analysis, it was revealed that the current change was the result of the long-standing efforts of practitioners and academicians to preserve this art form for future generations. The folk ritual which was on the verge of extinction got a new lease of life with its transition to a more secular and popular space.

The idea of decentralised governance was conceived in the nineteenth century by some leading European thinkers like Mill, Bryce, and Tocqueville both as a politico-administrative arrangement for weakening power and authority of the national state along with effecting improvement in administration and as institutions of participatory democracy. During India’s struggle for freedom Gandhi stood for it strongly. In village India it has taken the forms of panchayats. The new Constitution of independent India embodied it in the chapter on Directive Principles of State Policy which is not enforceable in the courts of law. An attempt was made to implement the concept in the 1950s on the basis of the recommendations of the Balvantrai Mehta Committee. But the experience has not been encouraging as institutions had either lost their momentum leading to the unavoidable decline in course of time or ‘killed before they were truly born’ in almost all the states. The Constitution was amended in 1992 to give the panchayats a new lease of life. But again, the future does not seem to be bright as they seem to stand at the crossroads. The paper will try to look back to trace the historical development of the institutions for the purpose of developing a comprehensive perspective and to assess the current state of affairs with special focus on the challenges being confronted. Another objective of this study is to search for silver lining, if any, and to suggest what needs to be done to strengthen the process of decentralised democratic governance in rural India. The study will be based on the secondary source material including illustrative case studies to build up and sharpen arguments. Keywords: Decentralised Governance, Panchayats, Constituent Assembly, Balvantrai Mehta Committee, Constitutional Amendment.

Between 1935 and 1970, roller derby was a co-ed North American sport practised on roller skates and played on a banked track. The 2000s marked its revival when a group of women decided to give it a new lease of life: roller derby is now exclusively for women and takes place on a flat track. Teams assert their independence from established institutions and follow a model of ‘do-it-yourself’ organization. According to some critics, the roller derby revival is a continuation of the feminist Riot Grrrl movement. This article aims to understand how French roller derby players use the ‘alternative’ heritage of American women. By mobilizing the frameworks of Cultural Studies and Sport Subculture, the article reflects on the ways in which the legacy of Riot Grrrl, as a movement to challenge a dominant order, enables derby teams to create alternatives to mainstream sports models. Through 90 interviews and participant observation conducted between January 2020 and the present day, the study was able to show a use of the DIY ethos articulated between resourcefulness and a claim to independence. While Riot Grrrl radically defends the values of the punk movement, against the prevailing economic and gender order, French roller derby and its teams propose a hybrid sporting model, articulated between reflections on a different way of looking at sport and a move away from the DIY model of the early days.

Abstract Although code-switching has been quite well studied as a worldwide phenomenon, closer attention to effects on the more localized language involved is needed, especially in the repertoires of younger, well-educated speakers speaking in a multilingual mode. We argue that their language shows creativity going well beyond older instances of borrowing and code-switching into a “third space” grammar, which shows an active and creative synthesis of at least two languages. This study is based on interview data with 37 speakers of Xhosa in Soweto, South Africa. It focuses on (a) the verb suffix -isha as a marker of multilingual Xhosa par excellence, (b) a new lease of life given to the class 14 prefix ubu- in connection with (mainly) Latinate adjectives from English, and (c) the interchangeability of logical connectors across the third space.
